Chapter 18- Christopher

All I saw was red as I walked towards Fred's door. My entire body was hot, and it wasn't because of the heat outside. I banged on the door like I was the swat team about to raid his apartment. I realized his car wasn't in the parking lot. After a few minutes of pacing back and forth as I waited, I saw his car pull in. Vanessa was just making her way upstairs as I ran pass her. She didn't make any attempt to stop me and I was glad. I reached my peak of anger at this point.

As his car door swung open, I grabbed him by his arm and dragged him out of the car. While he was off balance I pushed him onto the ground. His eyes were wide.

"Come on Chris let's talk about this!" he said as he laid on his back.

He tried to get up and before he could, I jumped on top of him delivering blow after blow to his face. Blood began to ooze out the side of his mouth. My conscience told me to stop but I couldn't.

"Chris stop! Please!" Vanessa screamed as she tried to pry me off of him. A few bystanders stared at me as if I were a monster. I justified every punch in my mind. This one is for fucking my wife and this one is for betraying me.

"Come on and fight me!" I yelled at him. The fact that he was just laying there made me more irate. "You're man enough to sleep with my wife but you can't even hit me once!" I said as I stood up.

He slowly made his way to his feet, his body swayed from side to side. We were almost eye to eye; he was about two inches taller than me. He spit out a small amount of blood, "there is no point in fighting. We can't do anything about what's happened now."

"Oh yeah I can! I can do this!" I punched him so hard I almost fell down with him. Vanessa screamed and ran to his side. Disgusted with them both, I went to Fred's car to get his keys that were still in the ignition.

My knuckles were throbbing as I made my way back up the stairs. I glanced over the wall to see that Fred now had a pity group hovering over him. I can't fathom why Vanessa wanted anything to do with him. He intentionally ruined our marriage and instead of her standing by her man she was tending to another.

I went into the guestroom and tossed my clothes in the suitcase. I thought back to how depressed I was when Vanessa kicked me out and how Fred was there to comfort me. I was so clueless. While he was smiling in my face he was probably thinking of how good it felt to be inside of my wife. Anger began to set in again.

I got all my stuff together and made my way to the door. As I reached for the doorknob the door flew open damn near hitting me. Vanessa had Fred's limp arm around her as she helped him in.

"What the hell are you doing Vanessa? You're pregnant!" I shouted.

I pulled her away from him and watched Fred fall to the sofa.

"What are you doing Chris?" she asked with an attitude.

"What do you mean what am I doing? What are you doing!?"

"You could have given him a concussion Chris! I know you're pissed but fighting him didn't do any good. I had to convince those people down there not to call the cops!"

"Am I supposed to be grateful now? You think I care about going to jail?"

Fred began to snore. Immediately, Vanessa ran to his side and began to shake him.

He woke up and struggled to sit up.

"Fred, you have to stay up for now. If you do have a concussion, it's best to keep a close eye on you to make sure you have no changes in your mental status," she said.

He directed his attention towards me. "Chris I'm sorry, I..."

"I don't want to hear anything you have to say. Vanessa let's go."

"Go? You don't see that he's hurt! You took it too far!" she spat.

"No, he took it too far when he had sex with you!"

Without responding she wrapped up ice cubes in a cloth and placed it on his forehead. She knew exactly where everything was in his apartment.

"So, you're his fucking personal nurse now?" I yelled.

"Are you serious?" she asked.

"Are you? You fucked my best friend, shit you may even be having his baby, and you have the audacity to play nurse with him right in my face?"

"It's not like that Chris, I don't want to take him to the hospital, they will ask too many questions."

"You're not fooling me with that Vanessa."

Fred butted in, "go with him Vanessa. I can take care of myself," he mumbled.

"I'm not leaving until I know that you're okay," she said, "Chris I think you need to leave, he needs to rest," she said as she wiped the blood from his face with a washcloth.

At this point I was beyond frustrated. This had to be a joke.

"Vanessa, either you leave with me right now or I'm filing for divorce in the morning,"

I was hoping she got up and left. Hoping that she would prove her loyalty to me. I made sure my face was stern so that she knew I meant business.

"I'm staying," she whispered.

A sharp pain hit me in the chest. This is what a broken heart must feel like.

"Well I hope you two have a wonderful life together," I said with tears in my eyes.

I didn't make eye contact with either one of them. I carried my belongings to my truck and tried to make sense of what just happened. It was stupid of me to try to work on a marriage that was beyond repair at this point. She just chose Fred over me. Lust over love. An affair over marriage. I put my car in reverse and drove off without having a set destination.

After cruising the streets for awhile I stopped at a liquor store in an unfamiliar neighborhood. I bought a bottle of cheap Vodka and opened it as I got back in the car. I took a big gulp and squirmed as it burned my esophagus on the way down. I decided to take another swig. I wanted to feel numb. As I took another round I caught a glimpse of myself in the review mirror. This wasn't me. I wasn't a drinker, at least not like this.

I opened the door and poured out the remaining liquor. Getting drunk wasn't going to ease my pain. I thought about things to do until I found one that would make me feel better, at least for the time being. I scrolled through my contacts and stopped on Kim's number.

I listened to the phone ring praying that she would answer. Things didn't end well between us the last time we spoke. I let out a sigh of relief once I heard her voice. It was time to pay her a visit.
