Chapter 25- Christopher
Vanessa and I went out to dinner to celebrate the great news. I wasn't sure what I would have done if the baby wasn't mine. Kim and Fred were out of our lives, now I just had to worry about getting rid of Will and the only way I could do that is to kill a stranger.
When we got home, we crawled into bed and started talking about our future. I couldn't take my hands off her stomach. We haven't had the best of luck in the past, but I felt it in my soul that this was going to be different. A blessing. This is just what we needed to bring us back together again.
"I can't believe I forgot to ask you this, but who is Will?", she said as she sat up with her back against the headboard. I must be hearing things incorrectly.
"Will?"
"Yeah, I was at the park today and a guy name Will came up to me, he told me I was prettier in person, and he said hello."
My right eye began to twitch, and my fist automatically balled up. I realized what I was doing and had to relax.
"Oh yeah, he's a regular at the shop."
"Ok. He's pretty weird though."
I forced a laugh. I was mad as hell. This dude was now following my wife! I needed to get rid of him and fast.
"Baby would you mind if I went out on a quick run?" I asked.
"What do you have to get?"
"I just have a craving for something sweet."
"Are you pregnant too?"
We both laughed."
"Do you want anything?" I asked.
"No, I'm fine baby."
"Ok, I'll be back in a little bit."
I threw on some jeans, a white tee, and a jacket and headed out. I put the address into my portable GPS. I could tell from the city that it was an upscale neighborhood. I parked at an abandoned house not too far from my target. I opened the glove compartment and took out the gun, its been years since I've used one. I invested in a ski mask and grabbed that also. Before I got out I took one last look at the photo. I balled up the picture in my hand. I had to do this for my family. I had to change my mentally. It was either him or me now.
I stuffed the gun in the front of my jeans and put the mask in my pocket. A car would come down the street every so often, but besides that it was quiet outside. I was in awe as I walked down the street and stared at the houses. It would be nice to put my family in one of these homes one day.
As the house came into view I saw that all the lights were off, except for one on the 2nd floor. I wasn't surprised being that it was 10pm. I ran to the side of the house with my ski mask on and peaked inside a window. Nothing. As I was making my way to the back of the house bright lights shined on me. There was someone pulling into the driveway.
My mind told me to run, but my legs were glued to the ground. I shielded my eyes until the car turned off. The door opened, but I couldn't make out who it was. Once my vision came back the guy was a few feet away from me with his hand on his waist clutching his gun. It was the guy from the picture. That's when I looked up and saw the sirens on top of the car. Now I know why Will wants me to kill him. He's a cop.
"Sir, I don't know what your doing here but..."
I stared at him. His mouth was open, but no words were coming out.
"But what?" I asked.
His eyes rolled back, and he fell to his knees. What the hell happened?
He fell face first into the grass and that's when I saw him. It was Will.
"Get your ass over here!" he whispered.
My body was still frozen. My legs felt like they were planted in cement. I couldn't move.
He walked over to me. The sound of his boots stomping on the grass with each step made it hard for me to breathe. I didn't know if he was going to kill me or not.
He grabbed me by the arm and started jogging into the direction of my car.
"Where are your keys?" he asked.
I couldn't comprehend the question. A cop was dead in front of his house and I was there. The way he looked at me gave me chills as I replayed it in my head. The sting from the slap Will gave me shook me out of my thoughts.
"Get your keys out we have to go!"
I dug into my pocket with trembling hands and handed him the keys. He opened the door and threw the gun inside. I noticed the silencer that was attached. How many people has he killed before?
"We have to get out of here!" he said.
I was in such a trance that I didn't see his car was parked behind me. He was following me the whole time.
"Where are we going?" I asked.
"You're going home. I'm going to call you and next time you will be the one pulling the trigger!"
"What?"
"This was just a test to see if you'd snitch!"
"So why did I even have to be here?"
"Because, now you know exactly who you're dealing with!"
I grabbed the gun from my jeans and rammed it into his mouth.
"It doesn't feel good when you don't have control huh?" I taunted him.
His eyes widened. I saw him for the real coward he was. He could take a life so easily, but he was still afraid to lose his.
I thought of my wife and child. I had to do this. Before I talked myself out of it I pulled the trigger. Blood was now splattered all over my face, body, and clothes. The small amount that managed to fly into my mouth made me want to vomit. Will was now history. We were finally free.....
"Hey! Hey!"
I shook my head and wish I had the balls to act out the scene I just played in my head. Instead, Will was snapping his fingers at me trying to get my attention.
"What's wrong with you? You're really day dreaming at a time like this? We have to get out of here. Go home!" he shouted.
He got into his car and vanished into the night. What did I just witness? Will had no conscience. No regret. He was a loose cannon that needed to be handled as soon as possible. I just had to figure out when and how.
"Ahhhhhh!" A shriek came from down the street, "somebody help!"
Lights began to flicker on throughout the surrounding houses. It was time to go.
I passed a 24-hour Walmart on the way home and picked up some chocolate chip cookies. I had taken longer than necessary, and I hoped that Vanessa didn't question me. I was in no mood to argue.
I went into the kitchen to put up the cookies since my appetite was long gone. Vanessa's purse was open, sitting on the counter. A large envelope caught my eye. As I was about to reach for it she called my name from the bedroom. She was sitting up, watching one of her tv shows.
"I'm sorry it took me so long. You know how Walmart is. It takes forever to check out."
She smiled, "It's ok baby, come lay down and watch TV with me."
I was relieved. All I wanted was to lay my head down, even though sleep would not be paying me a visit tonight.
"What are you watching?" I asked as I snuggled up to her under the sheets.
"A re-run, I'll probably be sleeping soon."
As she finished her sentence a breaking news report interrupted the show.
"We will soon be going live in Parkland where we are getting reports of a police-involved homicide at the residence of a Broward County sheriff that happened not too long ago. There are no details yet about how or why this happened, but investigators are saying that there is surveillance footage that may give insight into this heinous crime. We will have more information shortly.
If it was possible to die inside and somehow still be present on Earth, that was me right now.
"People these days, they have no respect for the law," Vanessa said as she turned off the television.
I couldn't utter a word even if I tried. I tossed and turned all night wondering what was on that surveillance tape and if it would lead police right to my door. Either way I had to get out of Florida before I ended up in prison or forced to kill again.
