Chapter 18 [not edited]
Chapter 18: back to the 1970s
I decided on whether I should tell Taylor the truth. I trust him and all, but I might bawl my eyes out. But I can't lie to Taylor... So I guess I've got to tell him.
"okay..." I took a shaky deep breath, "mom and dad were driving home from work -they worked in the same place- and Vince and I decided to wait outside the house for them since it was getting pretty late. Then we saw their car coming. They didn't die in a car crash, but I wish they did, because it would've been less painful for them, but of course, I wish they never even died. As soon as they got out, mom didn't even have time to greet us. This guy, whose name, identity or whereabouts have not been found, and was probably a robber, but to me he's a fucking psycho, stabbed my mom from the back. As mom gave out an ear piercing scream, Vince and I stood still on the spot, not believing whatever we've witnessed.
"I still remember my dad shouting, 'kids! get back inside! get inside!' I couldn't move though, I just couldn't. A thirteen year old girl witnessing her own mom's death isn't an everyday thing. Then, my dad ran to the other side to fight the bitch, but my dad has nothing while he had a knife. He stabbed my dad ruthlessly to the chest as soon as he reached the robber. I saw as the blood stained his striped shirt, trickling down, and his eyes showed pure horror. He looked back at Vince and I, and said, 'get back inside...' then Vince dragged me into the house. Vince checked the area after a while, and we went back outside. Dad's body laid there, lifeless, and in a pool of blood. Mom however, was laying there, her hand raising as soon as she saw us. I ran over to her, crying my eyes out and whispering, 'mom please stay with me, don't leave me, please'. She slowly closed her eyes, and said really softly, 'I'm sorry'. If we went out a little bit earlier, or if we were less cowardly and checked up on them as soon as the psycho left, they might have lived, the ambulance might have reached in time. They might be still alive and living..."
I lost it. I sobbed into Taylor's shirt and he engulfed me into a warm hug. It's been awhile since I've opened up to anyone about my parents. I've only opened up to Zoe. He hasn't said anything, and I was thankful for that. It was unfair, that the robber decided to strike that night, that he had chosen our parents, that he chose to be so ruthless and let their kids watch. It was simply unfair.
"it's okay..." Taylor whispered into my hair.
It honestly wasn't. I remember that day as if it replayed in my head like a movie. It was as clear as day. I remember mom's horrified face, dad's last words, how he looked when he got stabbed, what mom's eyes showed when she got stabbed. It replayed in my mind on some days when missing them was extra painful. No one should see their own parents, no one should see their parents die without prior knowledge. But it was destiny, a terrible fate. I guess sometimes I do wonder what it'd be like if they were still here. But life is like a road, it has a few bumps ahead.
"okay?" he asked, concerned.
"okay."
"this ain't the fault in our star, y'know?" he smiled, trying to lighten up the mood.
"yeah, because you're not Augustus Waters."
"mmhmm I'm way better," he said, stretching out the 'way'.
At that, I scoffed. It was amazing as to how Taylor was able to cheer me up with just a few words.
"whatever helps you sleep at night" I scoffed.
"you do," he smirked, causing me to blush.
That was so sweet oh my gosh. This boy is definitely going to be the death of me. His face itself can already make me go out of breath, mush less his person! damn.

"so how was your date?" Vince smirked.
"it wasn't a date..."
"tell me more, tell me more," he said, batting his eyes, mimicking the song Summer Nights from Grease.
"this is why you don't have friends" I rolled my eyes.
"I do have a girlfriend."
"tell me more, tell me more, did you get very far?" I sang, then rolled my eyes and said, "don't think you're gonna get very far, brother"
"you're irritating..." he muttered, shaking his head.
"isn't that what sisters are for?" I smiled innocently at him before rushing back to my room.
My room was pretty clean today, I was surprised I didn't mess it up. I didn't feel like doing anything, so I plugged in some earphones, blasting We Go Together from Grease into my ears. After talking to Vince, it made me miss the Grease songs, or maybe I just wanted to throw it back to the 1970s. They had good music back then, and the fashion as well, plus Chuck Taylors is a much cooler to call Converse sneakers, than just Converse.
I switched off the lights and let the fairy lights that I've hung over the bed last year fill the dark room like twinkling stars. I stared at my lava lamp of the table as the wax rised and fell. Then I felt my eyes slowly fluttering close, last thing I heard was: we're for each other like wop baba lumop a wap bam boom.
