Vingt-Deux
Bella sat on the couch staring blankly at the television screen waiting for her little sister to return. She wouldn't say it aloud but she felt like something was off. She tried to distract herself by thinking of something else, but Jasper could tell that something was bothering her.
"Bella?" Jasper asked a silent question.
"Something isn't right," she offers. There was no use in lying when he would be able to immediately tell.
Jasper opened his mouth to answer when he hears Alice gasp.
Alice stood with shaking hands and wide, venom filled eyes. Deep in her vision, she wasn't aware of Jasper gripping her shoulder or Bella taking her hand firmly. The psychic moved her lips quickly, but no sound escaped.
Bella stared in worry at the seen. Whatever Alice was witnessing was incredibly distressing, enough so that it caused the vampire to shake.
"He took her," she breathed out. She shook her head softly in disbelief. "I didn't see it.. I don't know why I didn't see it earlier."
"What is it Alice?" Bella urged. A horrible feeling growing in her stomach. Bella picked up her phone and dialed Andy's number only to hear the girls ringtone from the couch. She sat on the couch and placed her head in her hands, something was wrong.
"Something's wrong," she said firmly this time. Jasper felt the truth behind her words, Alice's state of shock was proof enough that there was some kind of problem.
The sound of the Bella's phone ringing caused Bella to jump. Grabbing her phone, she let out a defeated sigh when she realized it wasn't he sister.
"Edward." Her voice came out higher than usual.
"We lost him, the tracker." Bella could practically feel his anger and desperation through the phone. "He had the woman go through your records, he figure out where you are. I'm going to come and get you, I'm going to make you safe again."
"What do you mean he knows where we are?" Bella knew he could hear the panic in her voice but she didn't much care, her sole focus on he sister. "Do you think he's already here?"
"I'm not sure." Bella's breathing became labored. If he was here, he wouldn't be satisfied with just her, he would also want Andy. "Bella, what's wrong?"
"He's here." Alice' finally spoke, breaking out of her set of shock and she set herself into motion. Jasper quick behind her.
"I'm coming to get you," Edward tried to soothe Bella through the phone.
Bella dropped her phone to the ground, the shaking of her hands was too much to keep a grip. She wasn't stupid, she was able to put things together like Andy was. Bella wished beyond anything that it wasn't true, it couldn't be true. Bella was barely able to hear Edwards voice coming from he abandoned phone.
"He has her," she whispered. "He has Andy doesn't he. That was your vision."
Alice froze in her movements. Jasper leaned forward and gave his mates shoulder a comforting squeeze. The room was eerily quiet, Edward's panicked voice stopped at her words.
"Edward's going to come and get you, and then I'm going to get her back." Alice had a determined gleam in her eyes."She means more to me- to us, than you can ever understand, Bella. We'll get her back."
Bella shook her head slowly, not wanting to believe it. She had promised Andy that she would keep her safe, that she would do anything to make sure she was safe. She had tried to protect Andy her entire life, ever since she was a tiny thing when they moved out of Forks. She wouldn't accept the fact that she couldn't protect her, save her, when it mattered most.
"I have to go with you, I-I can't leave without her. I-"
"She wold want you to be safe," Jasper cut her off. Feeling the different waves of emotions coming from her, it was easy for him to understand what she was thinking.
"Why don't you go lie down?" Alice suggests. "We'll take care of everything. Edward will be here soon. We're meeting them at the airport."
Bella looked at her phone and picked it up. She moved to the other room and brought the phone back up to her ear tiredly.
"I know you have something to say," Bella said, defeat clear in her voice.
"He won't touch you. I'll be there soon." Hanging up the phone, Bella sits on the bed.
How was she supposed to explain this to everyone? How was she supposed to deal with the guilt that was clawing at her inside? Andy was sweet and innocent, shielded from the world. This threat was bigger than the both of them and neither of the girls new how to protect themselves from this. This was being stranded in the ocean without a life jacket. Andy had so much to live for and Bella would never forgive herself if she didn't make it.
Rolling n her side, she stared at the phone in front of her, willing it to ring and prove everyone wrong. Willing Andy to call and simply say she went outside for some fresh air and got lost.
When the phone did ring and Renee's name flashed across the screen, it took everything in her not to cry.
"Mom?"
"Bella? Bella! Where are you?" The familiar voice she had heard many times came through the phone, the same panicked tone from her childhood.
"Mom, calm down," her voice was as soothing as possible. "Everything is fine."
"Be very careful not to say anything until I tell you to." The voice was unfamiliar now. It was the kind of voice that was always light and friendly, the kind that drew you in. "Now, I don't actually have your mother but I do have something better. I'm sure you're already aware of that though, so please do exactly as I say , and she'll be fine."
He paused for a minute while Bella listened in mute horror. "That's very good," he congratulated. "Now repeat after me, and do try and sound natural. Please say, 'No. mom, stay where you are.'"
"No, Mom, stay where you are," her voice was barely above a whisper.
"Hmm, I see this is going to be difficult," his voice was amused, still light and friendly. "Tell me, are you alone? Answer yes, or no. Don't think about lying."
"Yes."
"But they can still hear you, I'm sure."
"Yes."
"Alright then," the agreeable voice continued. "Say, 'Mom, trust me.'"
"Mom, trust me."
"Now I want you to listen very carefully, I need you to get away from your friends. Do you think you can do that? Answer yes or no."
"No."
"I'm sorry to hear that, I would have thought you would be a little bit more creative. Do you think you could do it if your little sister's life depended on it? Maybe you would like to speak to her? Answer yes or no."
"Yes." Bella's response was quick, tears came to the girls eyes. She heard him talking lowly, a stream of words too low and too fast for her to understand.
"Bella! Bella don't do as he says! He's going to k-" Andy's voice cut off abruptly. Bella wasn't able to make out the words being said but she could hear the trackers yelling, and her sisters small whimpers of pain. Anger and desperation bubbled inside of Bella, she would do anything to save her.
"Your sister isn't a very good listener." His voice was back to friendly and calm. "Now I'll ask again, can you get away from your friends?"
Somehow, there had to be a way. She remembered that they were going to the airport. Sky Harbor International Airport: crowded, confusingly laid out...
"Yes."
"Very good Bella," he praised. "Now you need to go to your mothers house, there is a number next to the phone. Remember Bella, come alone, I don't need much time to deal with your sister. Do you understand?"
"Yes."
"Please say, 'I love you too, Mom.'"
"I love you too, Mom."
"Wonderful. I'll see you soon, Bella." He hung up the phone.
Bella sat on her bed. No tears came, and that was what let her know she was doing the right thing.
Taking out a pad of paper and a pen from the night table, she started writing a letter to the two most important people in her life.
