Chapter 10: When men become gods

Lucas p.o.v

It felt good being general, to take charge. The government had been corrupted for too long and it was up to me to fix it, to cure humanity of this virus that had plagued us.

As for the old general, he was put under with some anesthetics I got from my wife, who worked as a nurse at the Vegas hospital. She didn't question why I needed it, she just said she hoped I knew what I was doing. Anyway we threw the old general in a old basement and every once in a while knocked him out while he was tied up and restraint. The men swore their silence, they didn't seem to trust me but they had seen the government's corruption as I have and wanted to take action against it.

I got access to the inner library where books that the government doesn't want us reading are kept. There was books full of revolution and coups. Things that will create a rebellion, I used it as a step by step guide in how I would train my men.

I was in the general's office reading up on a book called, "Animal farm" about a group of farm animals rebelling on their farmers, one of my men called it some kind of allegory for a world before the plague. A war for equality that becomes their own downfall.

I didn't remember anything before the plague, oddly it seems that humanity only remembers one moment...the present.

Suddenly a man walked in, the one I told to stand guard. "Um...sir you have a um...visitor." He seemed nervous as he walked inside and revealed a man behind him holding a gun to his head.

He looked at me and kicked the guy to the ground before facing his gun towards me, "Where's the general?"

Travis p.o.v

"Alright search party, we need every man on deck. Derek and the others have been missing for about 6 hours, without a report back I fear the worse. We need you all to put your best effort and Sherlock skills to the test and find them at all cost." I announced.

"You know how large the city is and without a car that will take forever, not factoring in that whatever got them could get us." One of my men said.

"Don't disobey a direct order. We will search all day til we find them." I said, "Now your dismissed, teams of 4 go out and of locate any sign of our men."

I walked away and towards the weapons crew to see how much guns we had left. "Travis why are you doing this? I never seen you as the one to risk men's lives for the few."

I turned to Henry, "Maybe because I have a heart Henry." I looked at him seriously before laughing, "Or maybe they have Intel, weapons, food anything on them that will help on the bigger picture and if they do it's a commodity in this world now. We need everything we can get are hands on..." I looked over the men's shoulders as they armed and loaded the guns, "Besides...even without a clan of men we'll still have a army. The government won't even see us coming."

The men looked at him in shock before telling him the stats on weapons supplies. "So you would risk the lives of people willing to fight in order to survive the journey, what if you make it there what then huh? Are you just gonna fight them alone?"

"Yup." I replied simply.

"That's suicide!" Henry hollered.

I turned around, grabbed him back the neck and pinned him to the wall, a pistol held at his chest. "No Henry...suicide is not fighting at all." I let hi go and turned around. "I will not just lay down and die because they destroyed the world."

Henry took heavy breaths before speaking, "What about the corrupted...normal weapons don't work on them right."

"Then we won't use normal weapons." I looked at one of the guys, "Open the back, pack everything in it. We might not be coming back." The guy nodded and left.

"What do you mean we won't use normal weapons?" Henry asked.

"Exactly what it implies." I walked towards the basement.

"Explain." I ignored him, "Travis!" He grabbed my arm, "My brother is out there and if he's dead it will be all your fault."

"I didn't tell him to go out there." I said.

"You might as well have. His blood is on your hands because he put his trust in you just like these men and just like me."

"I never asked for your trust." I pulled away from his grip. "I lost people too! People I cared about." Henry stepped back and went silent, "So if your crying because your brother died and you trying to fill his plan just stop now because your not he's gone."

"You didn't say that when Katie-" I pushed Henry against the wall.

"You ever say her name again and I will murder you." I let him go and walked away holding my head.

"You went back for her...that's why you wanted me to get you out of the city, so you can look for her, because you thought she was still alive."

I looked away, "I was a fool..."

"Maybe Derek is still alive too, we'll never know until we know Travis but until we find him you have to let me in." Henry said.

I took a deep breath and wiped the tears from my eyes, "Follow me." I began to walk towards the basement. "I need to show you something."

I put my legs up on the desk and leaned back, showing my highest level of calm. "Did anyone else see you come in?" I asked.

"I won't ask again." He took the gun off safety, "Where is the general?"

"Well...let's just say he's well taken care of." I said.

"Don't you mess with me agent, you better start making sense or were gonna have a bloodbath." He stated.

"However I seen you came alone. Who's in position to make the threats here, you or me?" I said leaning forward. The guy didn't respond. I looked down at the agent who shook in fear, "Your dismissed agent, we need some time to chat amongst eachother as...aquantacies."

He started to get up and leave before the guy put his gun to his skull, "He isn't leaving this room, no one is til I get the information I need."

"He doesn't have anything to do with this, let him go." I stated.

He took his gun off safety, "Then you better start talking."

I looked at the agent on the floor, "Give him what he wants." The guys whole mood suddenly changed, as if before was all just an act. He smiled, turned around and quickly maneuvered the gun out of the guys hand and tossed it to me. The guy was in shock, as his knees were taken out and he was pushed to the ground. "I ask again. Who's in position to make threats here?"

I took the shot as the door opened behind him, "General your wife is on the line-" The secretary stopped a few steps in and saw the blood. She looked up at him, "Oh my God..." She was about to run out the room but I quickly took the gun off safety and shot her in the leg. "Ah!" She fell to the floor and began to beg for her life, "No no...I have a son please...I won't say anything I swear!" She turned away, "Just let me-" I shot her in the head.

"Agent clean the mess and discard the bodies, also pay off the security. We need yo make sure no one else finds out about the general's disappearance." I looked at the man's body before looking back at the agent. "Also put a word out to gather everyone in the building besides the ones on our side."

"Yes sir. Right away sir." The agent stepped over the bodies and down the wall.

I laid the gun on the table as I walked over to the chair and put my feet up on the desk, looking at the bodies on the floor staining it with blood before I picked up a book titled, "When men become gods" and read through it.

"And it wasn't til that moment...that they knew exactly what the man had meant before he was hanged. They had finally seen the goal of the council, the impossible dream they had conjured up..."

Travis p.o.v

I walked down the steps and revealed the darkroom I had. Henry gasped behind me, "When did you...how?"

"I bargained with some guards that switched guard duty from Vegas and here. They were able to get me the supplies and knowledge I needed to make this place, with the right insensitive of course."

Henry stopped at the wall of photos, "Is this-"

"Katie..." I looked at the pictures. "That's her..."

"She was beautiful. Did you take these picture before..."

"During the early days of the city, everything seemed like a whole new world compared to this. Little did we know what happened outside the walls..." I turned around and grabbed a bunch of photos out the draw. "But that's not what I wanted to show you, come look at this."

Henry walked over and seen the pictures, of tall buildings, different types of cars, and people walking down streets with suits and coffee...smiling without a care. "What is this?"

"When I asked a guard to give me negatives so I could take pictures he gave me these, but oddly enough there were still photos on here. Photos I don't remember, it definitely doesn't look like any city I know."

Henry looked at it more closely, "Maybe it was before the plague."

I turned to him, "Do you remember anything before the plague?"

He looked down and tried to think hard. "...not really."

"Not even your childhood?" I asked.

Henry looked at me, "What are you saying? That are memories have somehow been erased or something?"

I shook my head, "Or stolen..."

Lucas p.o.v

"...The council not only tried to play God...they tried to become him. They attempted to have domain over the Earth, power over the people, and the stings to every one of us who roamed the streets. They seeked to reach past the stars and yank out the heart of light, of hope, happiness...because of the inconvenience of it being too hard to control. They did everything they could, even to the extent of making humanity forget any of that stuff ever even existed...The council was smart, they knew one crucial fact that no other man had the ability to fathom. That the people who control the past controls the future and whoever controls the present controls the past. In reality we were blind with ignorance, we had little thoughts to think, little freedom to act, little motion to rebel. We had no brain yet nightmares are created by thoughts as is fear. In the back at my mind I wondered...had they already succeeded to surpassing God?"
