Almost. It's a strange, sad word. Something never completed but attempted. Sometimes, it is fortunate. Other times it's tragic. It's one of my least favorite words, if I had to give you a list, it would be right up there with words like maybe. The word rings with uncertainty and that's just no good for a lawyer.

"Blue Zircon, are you EVER going to learn to hold your tongue?!"

These words pull me back into reality. I groan and look up at the person who spoke. I have to admit, she is very pretty. She has slightly spiked yellow hair and eyes that shine. She radiates confidence, almost smugness. She is proud of herself, and I can't really blame her for that.

Those thoughts aside, I sigh again.

"I simply did my job. I was told to defend Rose Quartz, and that's what I did."

This case was so troubling and just wrong. I had to defend an infamous war criminal by the name of Rose Quartz. Not only did she turn herself in, but she made a mockery of the whole case! I mean, showing up like that? And then I had to go and challenge the very authority to their faces! I accused them of shattering Pink Diamond. What was I thinking?

"What were you thinking?!"

She's still yelling. It is my fault that we are both here. We're bracing ourselves to be shattered. Just maybe I can convince them to leave Yellow out of this. Those words were mine. She shouldn't suffer for my careless mouth. I hang my head sadly.

"You shouldn't suffer because of me. This is my fault and like Rose Quartz, I must own up to it."

"Blue? What are you saying?!"

I smile at her, tears stinging my eyes. I wait for her to catch on. Sometimes, well, mostly outside of the courtroom, she is kind of oblivious. I look her in the eyes, blue crashing with a soft yellow. She seems to finally understand what I'm saying.

"Blue! No! You...You don't have to!"

I'm sorry, Yellow. The truth is, I do have to go through with this. I smile and pull her close to me. She sniffles, tears beginning to fall. She knows what I mean.

"Blue. Before you go, I need to tell you something."

Footsteps approach our containment area. They're almost here.

"I lo-"

She doesn't get to finish.

The doors open and Yellow Diamond's Pearl beckons me. I take a deep breath and follow her. Before I leave, I turn back to Yellow Zircon.

I think I know what she was trying to say. I just wish I knew for sure.

I plead for Yellow Zircon to be spared. The compromise is made.

I will be shattered.

She won't be.

But, their mercy only goes so far.

Yellow Zircon has to watch them shatter me.

I don't want her to suffer like that, but I'm already pushing whatever luck I have. I agree to the terms and Yellow Pearl leaves to retrieve Yellow Zircon.

It isn't long until I hear footsteps. But they are not the confident ones I remember. They are hesitant, unsure. Like mine always are. Like I always am. She walks in, and is glad to see I am alive. She runs over to hug me, but she is restrained by an agate I've never seen before. The tears form in her eyes again, and all I want to do is wipe them away. I want to hold her close. 

All I can do right now is smile at her.

"I'm glad to see you."

Those words alone make me start to cry. She's already crying. We both know what our fates are. At least, she thinks she knows. She believes she's here to be shattered. But she's not.

I am.

"Any last words, Blue Zircon?"

"I love you, Yellow Zircon."

Her eyes widen as her mouth opens to form words of her own. The last words she wants me to hear from her. I want to hear her response, but I'm shattered too quickly.

The two diamonds leave, satisfied with their work.

They leave behind a sobbing yellow gem, holding onto the fragments of a gem she loved.

Her trembling hands hold shards of a blue gem, a gem who may have been timid most of the time but was very good at being defense. She holds the shards close to her chest, eyes closed.

"I'm sorry Blue. I couldn't save you."

"Yet you saved me."

"I love you. I always will."

Those are the words she almost said to me.
