Shards
"Haha! Look at the little runt!" A tall Amethyst taunts, holding the smaller zircon by her hair. "Leave her alone!" Yellow screams. She tries to go over to them, but a Topaz holds her back. "This oughta be fun! We've never had a zircon before. It's usually the common Rubies, and they get boring after a while." The other Amethyst notes before kicking the blue gem sharply.
She lurches forward, coughing up blood. Zircons weren't built to take hits at all, let alone ones from the brutes called Amethysts. Blue coughs again. "At least they aren't Jaspers..." She thinks to herself. She notices Yellow and gives her a weak, forced smile. "I'll be okay." She coughs, forcing the words out.
One of the Amethysts laughs. "You won't be once we're through with our orders!" She taunts, trailing one hand along the smaller gem's chin. The sight sickens Yellow to the very core of her gem. How dare they touch her! She lunges forward, but the Topaz is too strong. She looks up at the yellow gem and notices her blank, emotionless face.
She won't let Yellow go. Not until the punishment has been dealt. They've been here for hours, but it feels like an eternity. How long ago was it that her diamond, Yellow Diamond, sent them down here? How long have these Amethysts been laughing, the fragile life of Blue Zircon within their hands?
It's been too long, that's all Yellow knows. The screams, the laughter, her tears...it all mixes together. It blurs, making her believe for a few seconds that this is just an awful dream and that soon she'll wake up with Blue next to her. Maybe she'll be awake already, a cup of hot coffee in her hands.
"Here Yellow...I made you some coffee...the Rose Quartz child showed me how to make it..." Blue whispers with a smile. The yellow gem slowly wakes up, sight blurry at first but focusing until she can see the sharp form of Blue Zircon. The gem smiles as she sits up. She hands her the coffee, the warm cup waking her up almost immediately. She takes a sip, and grins. Thank you, Blue." She whispers.
A loud scream and cry for help interrupts Yellow's happy memory. Startled into reality, she is horrified all over again. Blue won't hold up much longer, and Yellow doesn't even want to think about what they will do to her gemstone once she poofs. The Amethysts are still going at it, disappointed that zircons aren't as strong as they had hoped.
Blue cries out one more time, then poofs.
Yellow screams out, tears streaming down her face.
"Topaz? Would you like to do the honors?"
The topaz moves forward, almost robotically.
Yellow can't move.
She can only watch as the orange boot stomps down on the gemstone, shattering it.
As the Amethysts leave, the Topaz begins to follow.
She stops and turns to Yellow, who is picking up the shards.
"I'm sorry. Orders are orders."
She leaves.
Yellow is all alone.
With the pieces of her best friend and girlfriend.
