Chapter 4

After Naomi had hurriedly unlocked the door, she made her way directly towards the heating system and turned it on, spending a good few minutes in front of a nearby radiator – to ensure it both turned on, as well as to warm herself up.

After a few minutes, she turned around and leaned against the slowly warming radiator, letting her hands thaw slightly between the radiator and her behind. As her hands began to warm up, her eyes wandered over to Chris, who was going about laying the books out into a few set piles on the table.

After a few minutes, Chris seemed happy with how he'd set everything out and pulled back to admire his work; Naomi couldn't help smiling a little as he nodded in content at his work.

Her attention was immediately pulled away from Chris by the sound of the front door opening, with a strange man bringing in a cool breeze with him as he entered. "Naomi Spencer?"

"Yes?" Resenting the fact that she had to move away from the warm radiator, she made her way over, feeling a bit safer approaching the stranger knowing that Chris was just off to the side.

Her fears were misplaced, however, when she saw the delivery company logo on his shirt. Her hands went up to slap her cheeks in realisation, causing the other two that were present to jump. "The coffee beans!" she exclaimed in horror. "I completely forgot!"

"Uh..." The delivery man was clearly unsure of what to say, and looked over at Chris uncertainly, who looked just as perplexed as him as he returned the gaze with furrowed eyebrows.

"You." Naomi immediately turned to Chris and pointed a finger at him, gaining the attention of both men. "You want to work here so show me how well you can help me. Carry the bags in; I need to sort out the storage." She rubbed the back of her head abashedly before she scurried off to do just that.

"—Sure." That was all Chris was able to say before Naomi had completely disappeared into the back. He moved towards the delivery driver, who led the way outside. "So how many bags are there?"

"Just fifteen," he responded as he opened the back of the truck and went to grab the first one. "We should be able to do it faster if—" But he stopped talking immediately when he witnessed Chris easily take out two large sacks, one in each hand, before he began carrying them inside.

"Sounds good to me. I'll go on ahead," he said over his shoulder. Due to the distorted view of the driver that he had from over his shoulder, Chris didn't see the expression that was displayed on the driver's face, and so thought nothing of his apparent superhuman strength.

"Naomi?" Chris tried to catch her attention once he was inside the café, but to no avail; silence was all that greeted him. Deciding he could just dump the sacks in the seating area for now and carry them wherever she wanted them later, he did just that and walked back out to the van where the driver was still trying to wrap his head around what he'd just seen.

Chris figured that maybe the driver would help, but as he picked up two more bags and the driver still hadn't moved, he turned around at the door and spoke to him. "Aren't you going to help?"

The driver appeared to break out of his reverie as he seemed to finally see Chris again. "Do really you need my help?"

Chris frowned, shifting one of the bags slightly on his shoulder. "Of course. It'll be faster that way."

The driver said nothing, and instead just nodded as he started pulling one of the closest bags towards him. Chris was about to turn around and keep going about his job when he noticed that the driver was struggling to lift even just the one sack.

"Um..." Chris started nervously, catching the attention of the driver who looked at him around the sack he was attempting to take into his arms. "Am I carrying too much?"

"It's not too much if you can handle it," the driver said with a strained voice, having finally succeeded at his task of lifting the sack into his arms. Not wanting to hold the heavy sack in his arms for too long, he began to waddle over in Chris's direction as quickly as he could.

"Right..." If the Curos could break out into cold sweats that would definitely have been Chris's reaction to the driver's words right now. As it was, the only thing that Chris was feeling was a slightly uncomfortable squirming in the pit of his stomach.

Realising that he was blocking the way of the approaching driver, he proceeded to make his way inside and placed the sacks that he was carrying beside the two that were already inside, and a few seconds later the driver followed suit.

"But seriously, dude, what kind of workouts do you do?" the driver asked as he turned to face Chris, already breathless from the one sack. "You look so slender and yet you have so much power in your body! You have got to tell me your secrets."

Despite the insistent tone in the driver's voice, Chris didn't have a chance to respond as Naomi appeared at the doorway to the kitchen. "Could you guys start bringing them in back here?"

"Sure." Naomi nodded happily at Chris's response before she disappeared once more, and Chris could almost feel the driver's heart breaking at the thought of that extra carrying. "You can take these ones, I'll bring the rest in from the outside and take them straight through."

The relief was evident on the driver's face, but guilt was also present. "Are you sure? I'd hate to make you do all the work."

"I'm not doing all the work though, am I?" That was all Chris said before he made his way back outside, leaving the driver to complete the task of carrying those inside through to the back.

Despite Chris's superhuman strength, the driver was done faster than him and met him outside just as he was picking up the third pair of sacks.

"Do you think you could take the last six just inside the building so I can drive off and continue the rest of my deliveries? I just need to ask Naomi for her signature for confirmation of delivery."

"Sure," Chris said, already dumping the two bags he was holding just inside the entrance as the driver made his way past him. By the time the driver returned and was ready to leave, Chris was finished.

"Next time you'll tell me your secrets," the driver said with a chuckle before pointing his thumb over his shoulder in the direction of Naomi. "For now, I think she needs you."

Grateful for the chance to avoid the situation, he nodded. "Sure. Thank you."

They bade each other farewell, and Chris picked up the first two of the remaining sacks to take to the back as the driver left through the front door.

He lugged the two heavy coffee sacks towards the storage room in the back, his body still not exhausted despite the strain it had undergone in the past half hour. He was just placing them both on the ground beside the already accumulated group of coffee beans when he noticed the sound of Naomi's voice emanating from the storage room.

"... don't care if I'm your only child! You should have thought of that before." Naomi's voice was clearly radiating anger and Chris immediately felt uncomfortable and decided to leave to fetch two more of the sacks.

Upon his return, Naomi was still going. "... doing anything to please you! Forget..." Chris quickly rushed away to fetch the last two sacks.

As he came back with the last two sacks, Naomi was still going. He wouldn't normally feel bad listening in on people – he didn't have a need to – but for some reason he felt like he was invading Naomi's privacy. Was it because he knew she could see him? Or perhaps because he knew her?

Just in that moment, Naomi appeared in the doorway, and Chris realised that she must have ended the phone conversation without him realising as he was internally battling with himself as to whether it was a good idea for him to be there or not.

For a moment Naomi seemed to forget the conversation she'd just had with her parents as a surprised expression look took over her face upon seeing Chris with two heavy coffee bean sacks over his shoulders. The surprise quickly disappeared as Chris placed the sacks on the floor.

"How much did you hear?" She glared at him, tears threatening to spill but she held them back, clearly waiting for a more suitable time to let out her feelings.

"Is everything alright?" Concern was evident on his face, but she brushed him off after he disregarded her question.

"Just forget about it. Worrying about me isn't part of your job training, anyway," she muttered, avoiding his gaze.

Chris frowned. "It might not be part of my job, but I feel it's a part of my responsibility."

Naomi regarded him for a little while, looking him all over as if that would give her some kind of answer; Chris was unsure about a lot of things that he said, but because he was talking about the real reason his question, his body radiated an honest certainty, almost setting her at ease.

"You're very strange," she said at last.

He gave her a small smile. "I've noticed."
