Chapter 62
'With the way things are going, the doctor thinks he has less than six months.'
Kcee's voice echoed in October's head as she bit her fingernail in shock.
Lung cancer.....When did that happen?
She sniffed as she covered her face with the sheets on the bed. She was so confused. Her heart was aching. She had always thought she hated her father, until now. Millions of thoughts ran through her mind.
Did her mother know? What about Leslie and Lawrence? Was that why he had asked her to come home? Was this really happening?
There was a little knock on the door. It opened slightly.
"Are you sure you don't want to come?" Aaron's low voice came from outside the room. October could tell he had been shocked too with the way he sounded so devastated.
"I'm not ready for this now." She answered, her head still beneath the sheets. He nodded slowly.
"Someone will be here to stay with you." He said and left after she didn't give him an answer.
October threw the cover off her body and rubbed her temples. The tears in her eyes were freely falling now. She felt so suffocated. It was like the walls were closing in on her. Her head could explode any minute.
Here she was, still hesistant to go to the family house with Aaron this instant. She was so frustrated. What was she doing? The same man who almost ruined her life and who showed up days ago to see her, was dying. She wanted to continue hating him at this point but she just couldn't.
She turned to lie on her side. She picked up her phone when she heard the notification tone sound repeatedly. The messages on her screen were from Damien. It seemed like he had heard the news already.
She didn't even know if at this moment she had the emotional strength to be angry with him for the dinner that had gone wrong. She finally decided to just ignore him. She wiped her eyes with her palms.
'Former bride to be'
It was a message from him again.
'Crying isn't your best look'
She sat up immediately and turned to look around. Her eyes met his. Weird thing, he was standing in front of her open door.
Wait.......
He was standing in front of her open door!
Well a certain twin brother would be killed today. Someone will be here to stay with her huh?
"If you're here to apologize for what happened at the dinner, I'm not in the mood." She failed at trying to sound cold as she lay down lazily on the bed again, backing him.
"I've been doing that way too much these days so I think I'm good for now." He leaned against the wall. He was dressed in a simple T-shirt and knickers.
"It's two a.m in the morning."
"I'm aware." He nodded like she could see him.
"I would have screamed at you for being an intruder but as you can see, I don't have that kind of energy."
"Noted."
"Don't respond. You're making my migraine worse."
"Mhmm."
"I don't see why Aaron would call you of all people. I just complained about you to him hours ago. And you just had to jump at the opportunity to come here and see me wrecked."
"I'm tempted to say that you never shut up for once."
She rolled over to face him.
"Well, no need to be so indirect, stupid."
"I love you too." Damien grinned.
"What?"
"Thank you. Don't mention it."
She paused to process what he was saying.
"What is wrong with you?" Was the only thing she could come up with.
"I'm drowning in love."
"God, you're so weird."
"It all started the day I met you."
He was replying to everything she said so quickly.
"Don't kid yourself."
"Nope. The only person allowed to do anything to me, is you."
"I know what you're trying to do. You want to make me talk."
"Look at you being smart. Maybe marrying you years ago was not a really bad idea. Love your pjs by the way."
Her face was expressionless.
"Just- get out. Stay in the living room or something."
He shrugged and walked towards her bed. He sat on the chair right beside it so he was close to her.
"I really want to be alone. Considering what happened hours ago, you're the worst person to talk to so please leave."
"I'm the boss here." He turned off the lamp on her bedside table. She turned it back on.
"You know, the October I knew years ago would harbor hatred in her heart and never talk to me again after what happened yesterday night." She rolled her eyes. "You've changed. Right now, I can tell what you need is a distraction."
She groaned internally. She was fed up with his disturbance.
"Oh, really? Humor me please." She said, her words laced with sarcasm.
"If you say so." He stood up. "But remember, you asked for it." He swooned down and in one swift move, he carried her bridal style off the bed.
"Are you serious?" She screamed and struggled to get down as he carried her all the way to the door and out.
******************
"I think royal blue would be better for the occasion." Jim said to Wale, his P.A, who was sitting across him in his large room. "I have a strong dislike for the purple one. Also, send the congratulatory gift to the new governor. I think we'll be needing him at some point." He lowered his voice at the last part.
"Yes, sir." The man said.
"And send the car to Doctor Okoye. Don't you agree that he's doing a fine job?"
"He is, sir."
"Good, good." Jim stroke his jaw. "You can go back to your room. We'll leave for work immediately it gets bright." He said as soon as he saw Adesuwa walk into the room with a maid behind her holding a tray in her hands.
Wale stood up quickly. He muttered a tiny 'good day ma' as he walked past her to take his leave. She rose her head in acknowledgment.
"It's time for your drugs." Adesuwa told Jim as the maid dropped the tray on the glass table in front of him.
"There's no need for that. I've accepted that I don't have up to six months left."
Adesuwa dismissed the maid.
"And so what?" She asked him. "You just want to die?"
"I think you're the one that wants to kill me first. It's almost three in the morning. It's not time for my drugs yet." Jim smiled.
She rubbed her neck.
"It's not funny."
"Stop stressing yourself Adesuwa. I know when to take my drugs."
"Fine then. I'll come back later. It's late. Go to bed. And stop making Wale have to stay here. He has a family too." Adesuwa gave him a look before she turned to go.
Jim waited for her to go before he picked up the two drug tablets on the small tray and threw them beneath the sofa to join the other drug tablets and capsules- where his wife would never find it.
