Part 8

Katniss

I'm walking through the woods towards District 12 when I hear a faint rustling coming from the bushes. I whip my head towards the source of the noise and find that the bush is shaking a lot.

I immediately turn in the opposite direction but don't run because I know that if I try to, whatever my predator is, it will catch up to me in no time. Luckily, there is a high tree just a couple yards away from where I stand. I run to the tree and start climbing it as fast as I can, by the time I am halfway up, I hear loud barks and see a pack of wild dogs emerging from the bushes.

I climb up higher and settle on a branch and am surprised by its strength for being so up high. I sigh when I see the wild dogs at the base of the tree, looking up at me and barking. This is not the first time this has happened, so I don't panic, but instead wait for a long while up here even after they are gone.

When I am sure that nothing is around here anymore, I climb down and continue my journey.

I am going to District 12 in hopes that Prim finds me and I can ask her for some help. She knows where to check on me when I am out in the woods, and I hope that she figures out that I am in need of some assistance.

I walk for quite some time before reaching my destination. I maintain a safe distance from the fence and try to go be as quiet as I can, so as to not draw attention to myself. They still might be searching for me for all I know.

I quickly discover that the fence is not charged anymore and that makes me wonder if they already know where I am and they are just waiting for the right moment so that I am caught off guard and they can come to arrest me. But I dismiss that thought when I realize the unlikeliness of it.

I close my eyes and take a deep breath before nearing the fence and sitting just beside it, hidden in a bush to the best of my ability. I know that it's not safe, but what option do I have?

I stay as close as possible, it will be easier for me to spot Prim, and the quicker I get this meeting over with, the better it is for me.

Sure enough, after a half-hour, I see Prim nervously walking towards the fence, trying to remain unseen. I don't make any noise, for it would only increase the risk of my discovery. I carefully walk out of the bush and stand behind it, peeking my head out just a little, enough to make Prim notice my presence.

Her eyes widen when she spots me and she hurries over, trying not to make it obvious that she saw me and is coming up to me.

Prim has always been terrified of the woods, so she won't come to this site, but I am grateful that she at least came. I walk backward and she follows me, only from the other side. Once I am sure that we are out of sight, I turn to face her. We speak in low whispers even though it's late evening and there won't be much public around at this time plus we are concealed safely.

She turns to me and exhales deeply before saying, "Thank god that you are finally here. I've been coming up once every hour to check on you."

"I'm sorry Prim but thanks for coming. We don't have much time, I can't afford getting caught now, not after Peeta is too..." I trail off towards the ending, not being able to cope up with that at the moment.

Prim nods understandingly, "I know, I get it. Hey, I got you some clothes. Figured you would need some, even the big sizes," She gestures to the small bag that I didn't realize before, she was holding.

"Oh, Thank you so much," I say, knowing she would do something like this.

"The entire district is talking about your escape, you know." She starts, I knew this would be coming anyway. "People are starting to take it up as an act of defiance. No one has ever done this before, you two are the first. Snow's not too happy either, I just hope Peeta is okay." She looks at me with worried eyes. "We can only hope for him to not receive a brutal punishment."

I bite my lip and nod, feeling like I am about to cry. I try to push my fear and worry back, but it's impossible to. I sigh deeply and say, "I know, I worried sick about him too. Do you have no news about what will happen to him? No announcement?" They must have given some information regarding his penalty, they would want everyone to know that breaking rules are not okay, and if that does happen, they will make sure that we pay for it. They would be sure to use us as an example. But they haven't, and that worries me.

She shakes her head, "No, they have been awfully quiet about this. Something is wrong here too. People have been acting differently. I'm not sure how, but there is a change, I don't know if that is a good sign or a bad one."

I nod, "I really think I should go, and you should too. I don't want to get you in any more trouble than you already are in. I'm so sorry. It's all my fault." And it's true, Prim being related to me, she is bound to have peacekeepers questioning her regarding my whereabouts.

"Katniss, it's okay. Just know that I will always be here for you, whenever you need me." She says, her voice cracking and that's when I know that she is on the verge of tears.

I smile sadly, trying not to cry myself, "I will keep that in mind. Remember to take care of yourself. I don't want you to get hurt, in any way.

"Okay," She assures me, "Don't worry about me and take care."

"I will. I'll visit you soon too. I love you."

"I love you too, Katniss." And with that, she turns away from me and starts walking back in the direction she came from.

I sigh, feeling awful and head back to the cabin. I know that I have messed up, pretty badly too.

On my way back, I decided against going to the cabin, so I head to the one place that I know will calm me down. The lake.

It's the place I would go to all the time with my father, he would teach me how to swim. We would spend time there, talking and having fun, collecting Katniss's roots to take home for supper. I remember having one of my best days with him out there.

Once I reach there, I lose myself in admiring the beauty of the lake, the sight of it under the night sky studded with stars. The scent of fresh water. The memories this place held. Beautiful.

I realize just how much I've longed to be back here. I sit down and close my eyes, leaning against a tree. All the memories I've had in this place with my dad flood their way into my head as I hold back tears.

The true absurdity of my situation hits me as I recall my conversation with Prim. Not that I didn't already know how bad it was, but I truly understand how this is affecting not only me or Peeta but even Prim, and the entire district has been suffering.

Prim's P.O.V

I try to keep myself together while walking back home. Whatever I talked about with Katniss upset me, but I don't know why. I am scared for Katniss, she is my sister and I love her. Obviously I am worried about her safety. I don't think I would be able to live with myself if anything were to happen to Katniss.

She was the one who took care of me after Dad died when our own mother abandoned us. She gave up her childhood taking care of her family. She sacrificed so much for us, but in the end, she doesn't even get to be happy even though she deserves it. She deserves it more than anyone else even though she won't accept it.

Now she is out in the unknown, trying to survive, with the entire government against her. How much worse could our lives get?

I reach home about fifteen minutes later, and, tired, I walk in and plop down on the couch. I exhale deeply, snuggling up and soon falling asleep. But I am awakened by nightmares of losing Katniss, usually, she would comfort me, but now she can't because she is far away from here. From me.

I close my eyes and lean my head against the couch as silent tears fall down my cheeks.

Why doesn't anything at least for once ever is good? Why do we always have to be the ones to suffer?

Katniss says that I am matured beyond my age, that life forced me to grow up too quickly, but in truth, I feel as if what I have gone through and am going through is nothing compared to Katniss's current predicament.

She was right, though. The moves she pulled are causing me trouble, I get a lot of not-so-pleasant looks when I go out in public. Whispers behind my back. Rumors. That was part of the reason why I was so sneaky when I went to meet Katniss yesterday.

But it's not her fault, she doesn't have to feel guilty. She fell in love and that should not be considered a sin. But it is, at least, here it is. You can't necessarily control who you fall in love with. And you should be able to choose with whom you want to spend the rest of your life. It should depend on you, not some stupid country rules. But that is a luxury we can't afford.

The universe has a cruel sense of humor, it makes you fall for someone who you know you can't have. And if you can, it's not on your terms. And the cost is what? Your life? Who needs that? I believe that you should have power over your own emotions and feelings and I think that even though people despise Katniss's act, they look up to it, and are starting to realize that whatever is happening to us, it's not right.

That what she did was beyond her control. She has to realize that too and stop blaming herself for everything. I also know that she is very upset about Peeta, and so am I, but I know that it's bothering her more than she is letting off. All we can do is hope that he is alive and well. Maybe he won't be well, but alive...yeah, we can hope for that.

I sit here for quite some time, questioning life and all the unfairness of it. It's still only the crack of dawn, so I try to get a little more sleep while I still can. When I wake up, it's late morning — almost midday. I get up and stride to the bathroom to freshen up. By the time I am done, I feel famished. So I go to the kitchen and prepare myself a small meal.

As soon as I finish eating, I hear a loud and impatient knock on the door. I am a little surprised because people don't usually visit me. I walk towards the door and swing it open, only to find two peacekeepers standing there. My eyes widen, and I tense up.

"Yes?" I ask, but there is no point. My throat is closed up so it comes out sounding like a faint croak. I embarrassedly clear my throat before repeating myself "Yes?"

"Is this Primrose Everdeen, sister of Katniss Hawthorne?" One of the peacekeepers asks me.

"Yes, How may I help you?" I know what they want, but I ask them anyway. I even expected them to come, nevertheless, this encounter is unnerving.

"We have a few questions to ask regarding your sister. You heard about her, I'm sure." The other peacekeeper says with a deep voice.

I nod, "I did."

"Do you have any information as to where she might be?"

"No, none," I say

The peacekeepers give each other a look, "Are you sure?"

"Positive," I say trying to keep my voice from wavering.

"Just so you know, if we somehow find out that you had knowledge on this matter, you will not be excused. Understand?" He explains.

I say nothing, hoping a nod will suffice as my answer because I know that I won't be able to speak without my voice cracking, and the lack of confidence would only give away suspicion.

The peacekeeper that had been talking to me all this time gives me the last warning look and turns to his companion gesturing to leave.

Once they are well out of sight, I slam the door shut and let out a held breath, leaning against the closed door, closing my eyes, and sinking down to the floor. So close, I think. I stay there for a long time, with my head in my hands before walking back to my room.

My legs are still trembling due to my experience with unexpected visitors. I somehow manage to reach my bed and— even though I slept for a long time before— curl into a ball and drift off into a dreamless sleep.
