Chapter 1
I was frozen in place. The other seven had already fled the scene, but I just couldn't pull myself away. Only the glow of embers and the moonlight could give me enough light to show me the horror playing out before me. Master Slenderman was fending off six, leathery, black skinned demons. Even with his supernatural powers, Slenderman was growing weaker by the minute from all of the lethal blows. Despite my subconscious's protests yelling at me to help Master, he was doing this to save the rest of us. So I forced myself to run away from the merciless bloodbath.
I ran and ran, my breathing out of control and my twitching going berserk. I did my best to control by breathing as I dodged trees, bushes, and several dead animals and branches. It didn't matter if the branches scratched at my arms or if the thorns and briar sliced my feet. I now only had one goal set in my mind: escape.
It seemed like years of running until I could hear something loudly gaining on me from behind. And against all of my better judgement, I turned around. I gasped, seeing three of the demons, covered in black, tar like blood, racing after me with the word "murder" shining brightly in their crimson red, pupiless eyes. Feeling the strong will to live and the rush of adrenaline had pushed me forward and I could sense myself putting just a little bit of distance between me and the demons. Maybe I did have the chance of living. Then, finally, I could see a clear opening with the bright moonlight shining from above. My heart filled with the smallest speck of hope.
You can do it, Toby! Just a little more and you're free! I pushed myself even more and I finally broke free to the clearing. Just a little more and- shit! I had to practically dig my entire feet into the ground to stop my from running off the edge of the cliff. Below me is what seemed to be a dark, everlasting abyss. My heart dropped in dissapointment- no, something more than disappointment. Is there a word for that? I don't know. Then I heard growling. My eyes widened, my breath halted, and my hear skipped a couple beats. I turned around.
The demons stood a couple yards away. In the moonlight, they looked like single headed hellhounds, with blunt spikes along their tails, drooling fangs, ragged claws, and ram horns instead of ears. My legs felt weak as they slowly closed in on me. What should I do? What can I do?! Well, I had two options: be mauled to death by three horrifying beings, or jump off the cliff into the now welcoming, dark abyss below. I'm sure you all know which option I went for. Except that guy. Yeah, you know who-...actually, now's not the time for this.
I stepped backwards until my heels went just over the edge. I opened my arms, relaxed my body, and let the smallest of smiles showing my face...before I leaned backwards and let myself fall.
The three demons hissed something in a language foreign to my ears until it was cut off with the sound of wind rushing past me. My smile then turned into a smirk when I twisted my body downward, leaned forward slightly, and unfurled my wings. My body jerked upwards and I flapped them as hard as I could.
Fourteen feet across with dark brown feathers becoming lighter as they became closer to the edge, they lifted me higher and higher by the second. I couldn't believe it. I...I was flying! I let a laugh escape my lips and flapping became a little easier. This must be what it feels like. What it feels like to be free.
Then I heard a gunshot. Shocked, I stopped flapping. I slowly looked down and right in the middle of my chest was a bleeding bullet wound. I then began to spiral towards the ground and my vision faded to black.
Crap.
