Chapter 10
Poppypaw shuffled through camp. The elders were complaining about their joints being sore and she still had to care for Darkfrost, she was thankful for all of Wish's help. She always had her paws open to help, and she often shooed Poppypaw off to her nest when she was clearly exhausted. She smiled as she put together Darkfrost's herbs, he was getting better every day, he even left the den yeasterday, but retreated quickly when he saw Branchlight and hid mouse brained minions following after him. She picked up the leaf wrap and stomped out of the den. She almost bumped into the sassy senior warrior Shadowbreeze but the she-cat hissed and jumped away. "For Starclan's sake pay attention t9 your surroundings.", she hissed angrily and padded away. Poppypaw flinched at her words, she didn't say anything about her eyesight, but she could feel that every cats attention and patience was growing thin. As the season slowly made its way into leaf are and prey and herbs were dwindling past. Some cats didn't like that she was using valuable herbs for Darkfrost, and if it weren't leaf bare and if she wasn't exhausted, she would have made them stop complaining with a sharp retort. She sighed as she made her way to the den where she heard Wish and Darkfrost Whispering together. "Hello, I brought your herbs.", she said setting them down. "Oh come on.. these things taste disgusting, can't you just forget about my herbs for once?", he whined. She laughed. "You are getting more like yourself everyday, and no I can't forget about your herbs.", she said. He continued to whine as he swallowed the herbs begrudgingly, but it soon changed to smaller grumbles. She shook her head. Wish padded duo to her and touched her nose to Poppypaw's shoulder. "You should go rest, I've got this whiny kit.", she said with a morrow of amusement. Darkfrost coughed indignantly. Poppypaw chuckled. "Ok, I'll go. I swear Wish you take more care of me then I so the whole clan. Not to mention what you do for Dakrfrost.", she said with a thankful smile. Wish nodded and brushed her tail down the calico cats flank. Poppypaw turned and left the den after saying her goodbyes and trudged towards her den. Honeygaze had been leaving more often. She basically left Poppypaw to do everything by herself, but she nearly yowled her relief when she saw the pale tabby in the den. "I'm going to rest a bit, I didn't sleep well.", she lied. Her mentor merely nodded. Poppypaw slid into her nest and sighed. Closing her heavy lids she feel asleep. She opened her eyes again and she found that she was in a forest. She had always been able to see in her dreams, but she was surprised none the less. She had never been in this part of the forest before. She looked around and saw a familiar black tabby. "Darkfrost!", she shouted and bounded towards him. She was surprised by the intensity of his ice blue eyes. If she didn't know him she would have been intimidated by his icy stare. He looked at her with such horror. "What are you doing here?!", he hissed. She frowned. "What do you mean, I come visit starclan every now and then, I'm a medicine cat remember?
", she said with a smirk. He glanced around nervousley. What was wrong with him. "Look poppypaw, you need to leave. This isn't the place you think it is. Just go back ok, I don't want you to pay for my mistakes.", he said quietly. Poppypaw couldn't question him before she was shoved into a bush. She squirmed enough to see outside. Darkfrost stood there staring at a Beautiful silver tabby. She looked so lively and young, she couldn't have been dead for to long. Poppypaw waited for the beautiful tabby to say something gentle and welcoming, but instead the she-cat snarled. "I thought I heard talking.", she hissed at Darkfrost. He stood up straighter but still had a scowl of respect, if that was even possible. He cleared his throat and spoke calmly. "I was just talking to myself about my training, nothing to worry about.", he said with a slight smile. Poppypaw blinked. 'Training?', she thoight. The she-cat huffed. "You better remember your training. If you lose the fight then you'll get it.", she snarled and turned tail and started to stalk away. Dakrfrost dropped his head and grumbled, "Of course Silentmist". Once Poppypaw was sure the cat had left she crawled out from under the bush. "Who was that?", she hissed quietly. Darkfrost gave her a blank stare and then sighed. "Starclan isn't the only place dead cats go...", he said quietly. "This is the dark forest I've been training here ever since Badgersun nearly killed me. I wanted to get back at him, but I was hardly strong enough. Silvermist came to me and offered to train me so I could be strong enough to defeat Badgersun. She trained me and helped me get better but then I found out what this place really was, and I tried to not come back. Silvermist kept coming to my dreams and forcing me to come.", he said with a defeated and ashamed look on his face. Poppypaw frowned. So this was what was bothering him at night, he wasn't having nightmares. He was fighting for his life among dead cats. She looked at him with a sympathetic frown. "Why haven't you told me or wish about it? We could have helped you.", she said sadly. He shook his head. "You wouldn't have been able to do anything. This is my fault, and I have to fix it.", he looked over his shoulder and Poppypaw became aware of loud snarls and caterwhalls coming from deeper into the forest, where Silvermist had gone. "I have to go now, you need to wake up and go back to the camp. They need you.", he said with a sad smile. "I am so proud of you.", he said. She stopped. "Wait no you have to come with me. It will be alright!", she said louder than she meant to. Tears were pooling from her eyes by now. He was acting like death was a paw step away from him. "You and me both know I stand no chance to dead cats. I'll be joining them soon.", he said looking at his paws. She cried out and slammed into his shoulder. "No I won't let them hurt you, you can't leave me. You were the only one who cared about me when I was a kit. You can't die now. You still have to avenge Shellpaw and Wish, she loves you! I love you. You can't leave me now, after I have fought so hard to save you.", she practically screamed at him. He just stood there and watched her sadly. He was shaking his head. Finally she stopped. "Fine if you won't come with me then I'll stay here and fight with you. That's when something clicked, something inside of him snapped into a thousand prices at his paws. He stepped closer to her, his eyes wide and rage filled. She wanted to back away. He was scaring her. "You will not go anywhere near these monsters. I'm not going to let you die like Shellpaw did. If I have to kill every last cat to keep you alive then I will. I am not going to lose you like I lost him. Poppypaw wasn't able to respond before he bounded off to the fighting. She screamed his name for him to come back, but he didnt and she raced after him. She skidded to a halt in front of a tom that had nearly faded away. She looked up to see more cats fading. She searched for Darkfrost but couldn't see him. Suddenly she saw him break through a pile of cats his flanks were streaming with blood and he had a face full of rage as he battled several cats. She sucked in a breath as he was buried again in screeching cats. She felt two cats pass by her and tensed but they didn't give her fear more like hope. She watched as two star speckled cats battled the dark forest cats. One of them she had seen before, she raced after the grey tom. "Shellpaw!", she shouted and the tom shot her a smile. She looked to the other cat. "Bluejay! Get to Darkfrost's side!", the small grey tom said to the other cat. Bluejay nodded and dove toward the swarm of cats. Poppypaw b ok under to Shellpaw's side. "What can I do?", she smashed breathlessly. The grey tom turned to her. "Get help, there are three cats in your camp right now, tell them you were sent the Blue Feathered Jay, and they will help you.", he said quickly. She nodded and soon realized the battle began to fade. When she woke uo in her nest she shot out of it and raced out of the den. She saw a group of cats hissing and spitting. She raced up and squeezed her way in between to the center of the circle. Wish was staring at the three cats in the circle. Two black she-cats And a tom. Poppypaw yelped as she was shoved back. The circle was tightening. She needed to get to these cats, to get them to help before it was to late.
