Incisions
After Kevin had taken wing and left, Aleks sat, grumbling to himself. He shook his head, crossed his arms, and grew madder and madder as he stewed in his own rage.
"Uh, Aleks?" Seamus asked, noting the other's growing anger. "You... You okay?"
Aleks rolled his eyes and scoffed, "Yeah. Wonderful. Beautiful. Great."
Seamus reached his hand out and set it on Aleks' shoulder. "You want to talk?"
Aleks knocked Seamus' hand off. "I'd really rather not." He sighed. "Is there somewhere I can just take a minute to rest?" He pinched the bridge of his nose.
Seamus thought for a moment. "Well, since Jordan hasn't assigned you a specific room yet, I guess you can rest in my room for a bit." He shrugged. "I'll show you the way."
"Thanks," Aleks said, a grateful smile crossing his lips. Seamus smiled back, eyes glowing blue, as he led Aleks down a long hallway.
"This hallway, if you were wondering, doubles as weaponry storage," Seamus said, barely glancing at the shelf-covered walls.
"That would explain the weapons all over everything," Aleks said, looking over the multitudes of knives, swords, and other various blades twinkling in the dim light. He found himself drawn to a certain piece of destructive metal; a sort of brass knuckles with large blades secured to the front and sides.
Seamus noticed his interest and smiled. "That's a little something we like to call the 'face fucker.' Pretty intense, huh?" He quirked his eyebrows at the other, still admiring the blades covering the shelves.
"How often do you guys use this stuff?" Aleks asked, hand trailing over the glass case that covered the shelves.
"Just depends on who you ask. Jordan plays around with them all the time, but most of us don't really need them. I mean, I have my own blade. It's way better than any of these toys hanging up around here," Seamus said, brandishing his scythe. "This baby can rip through twenty men, slicing their souls apart on the way, with ease." Aleks stared in awe; weaponry of any sort had always interested him, especially anything that could affect more than just the live body.
"Wow," Aleks said, reaching for the scythe.
"Hey. Hands off." Seamus pulled the blade away.
They arrived at a large wooden door. Seamus grabbed the handle and opened the door revealing a dark, spacious room containing no more than a four posted bed and a small door leading into the closet.
"Well, here we are," Seamus said, gesturing to the room surrounding them, "Make yourself at home."
"Thanks, dude," Aleks said, jumping onto the bed.
"No problem," Seamus said with a shrug. "Call me if you need anything." Aleks nodded in response as Seamus left the room.
"This is gonna be something else," Aleks said, pressing his hands onto his face, "I can tell."
After he had led Aleks to his room, Seamus left and went to find Kevin. He had a few ideas of where he might be and headed towards the most probable place.
"Hey, Nick, is Kevin here?"
Nick smiled and nodded, before finishing his phrase and pulling his violin away from his chin. "What's been going on? Kevin seems a bit... Upset," Nick said, his smooth voice barely audible. Even though he tried to fill every moment with music, he knew how sweet a bit of silence could be.
Seamus answered quietly, returning Nick's tone and volume, "Just a bit of," he chose his words carefully, "drama between him and Aleks."
Nick smiled a knowing smile and nodded. "I hope it all works out."
"Me too, Nick. Me too," Seamus' voice trailed off as he repeated his first words. He smiled back to Nick with purple eyes, clouded with preoccupation.
Nick took a moment to rosin his bow once again before gripping his violin once again and continuing his song. The sweet music alone was able to dye Seamus' eyes a light blue.
Seamus took a deep breath and pushed himself off of the ground. He had the ability of levitation, but didn't use it often, for he felt weaker and shakier without his feet firmly planted. He rose up to the crevice in the ceiling, peered inside and saw Kevin sound asleep in his nest, wings covering a majority of his lean body. Seamus pulled himself into the small enclosure and rested his feet on the smooth stone.
"Kev, come on. Wake up," he said, rustling the nest slightly and nudging the feathery wings. "We need to talk." Kevin's wings twitched in response, but he did not awaken. Seamus sighed. "Come on! Get up!" He made more noise and moved the other more drastically.
"Hmmm... Just... Just five more minutes," Kevin said, voice still tinged with fatigue. He shifted himself, his wings flopping so that his face was visible.
Seamus smirked, his eyes twinkling a devious red. "Am I gonna have to do what I did back when-?"
"N-no. No need for that," Kevin blushed and laughed nervously. He needed no more of the question to be spoken to know what the other meant. "I'm up. I'm up."
"Good," Seamus said, eyes fading back to a reddish purple. "We need to talk."
"If it's about Aleks, let's not," Kevin said, rolling his eyes.
"Let's."
Kevin crossed his arms. "I really don't want to talk about it. Anything that happened before, or anything that's happening now."
"What a great place to start. What happened between you two before?" Seamus asked, disregarding the other's distaste for the subject.
Kevin sighed. "Fine! You know what, fine!" He rubbed his temples. "As you know, I was chasing Aleks just before you. I caught up with him once, and, man, he was scared. I felt so terrible to have scared someone else like that..." He diverted his eyes from the other.
"Oh, come on Kevin-" Seamus began, but was cut off by a glare from the other.
"I... I told him not to be afraid and that I wasn't going to catch him. I told him that someone else would be after him soon. I said, 'Don't get caught. For your own sake.' Then I left," Kevin said, sighing.
"That's i-?"
"Stop interrupting me, dammit!" Seamus flinched, then his eyes flared red, a small spark of anger coursing through him. Kevin disregarded it and kept speaking, "Aleks came and found me a day or two later. He asked me about this place and why he was being chased, who I was, why I had joined you guys, whatever and whatever. I explained everything. Once again, I told him to not get caught. To do whatever he could to not end up here. I thought you'd let him go if he begged. I didn't know you were so ruthless."
"I had to catch him though otherwise Jordan would've... Would've..."
"Cut you. Whipped you. Threatened the face fucker. Yeah. I know. I went through it all." Kevin fiddled with his shirt and managed to pull it over his wings, exposing his skin. Seamus gasped when he saw the various cuts and gashes covering Kevin's chest. "Yeah, and this isn't even the worst of it." He turned around and lifted his wings revealing his back, almost completely raw by means of whiplashes and cuts from assorted sharp objects.
"K-Kevin. You should've told me this! I'd... I'd have helped out. Not caught Aleks... Bandaged you up, whatever!" Seamus could barely make fully formed sentences with this gruesome sight before him. "I mean, I can still bandage you up though. At least try to ease the pain, because that looks like it hurts like hell."
Kevin squirmed as the pain filled his body. "Oh, I can assure you, it does. It hurts worse than I could've imagined." He lowered his wings, covering the majority of the ravaged skin on his back. "At least I'm the pretty boy here. Jordan wouldn't dare use the face fucker on me."
"I'll go get some medical this and thats. I know I'm not the best, but I'll help as much as I can," Seamus pleaded, hoping Kevin would let him help.
Kevin shook his head. "Don't you dare. Jordan promised me hell and a half if I tried to ease the pain." Seamus gave Kevin a concerned look, eyes purple and clouded with worry. "Hey, don't worry. I've managed these past few days. I'll make it," Kevin said, trying to reassure himself as well as the other. "I mean, today is the best it's been. It finally stopped bleeding..." Seamus cringed, knowing that, at the very least, Kevin had been bleeding for the past four days. In all reality, though, he knew it had most likely actually been about a week.
"You really should've said something," Seamus said.
"It would've just made it worse for me. You were around Jordan while getting the assignment and I needed sleep," Kevin explained. Seamus nodded and fell silent.
After a moment or two of silence, Seamus spoke up again. "Damn. You're way too good at hiding pain," he said, shaking his head.
"I've spent many years learning how. No one is supposed to know the difference between half dead and alive and well." Kevin smiled and tilted his head innocently. "And the high pain threshold of being an angel doesn't hurt either." He turned and went to pick up his shirt. Upon trying to put it on, he was met with quite a struggle; barely being able to pull shirts over his huge wings mixed with near crippling pain made it basically impossible for him to accomplish this task alone.
"I've got you," Seamus said, stepping over to help. He grabbed the hem of the shirt as Kevin let go and pulled it down. Kevin gasped in pain, for now his shirt was pushing his wings into his back, not only pressing against the raw wounds, but making him feel increasingly trapped. He began to squirm and nervously flapped his wings, and he started to hyperventilate.
Seamus shakily tried to help his friend, but was unable to due to the other's frantic movements. "Stay still!" he commanded, "I can't help you if you keep moving!" Kevin, his breathing still increasing in tempo, tried to comply but found himself unable to. His muscles twitched and tightened even as he consciously thought about being still.
"Just take a deep breath or something! Calm down!" Seamus said, still frantically trying to help. "You're just going to hurt yourself more!"
Then, beautiful notes filled the hollow. They reverberated in the small space, carrying the sweet melody into both Kevin's and Seamus' bodies. They were instantly calmed; Seamus' eyes fell into the iciest blue that they had ever been as Kevin's breathing slowed and he fell still and relaxed. Seamus was now able to adjust the shirt accordingly, allowing Kevin to slip his wings through the slits in the back of it.
"Thanks, Nick!" Seamus yelled down. He knew he had been heard when the melody's intensity faded as it fell back into no more than a gorgeous tune. Kevin rubbed his face, pulling himself out of the wondrous trance he had just been in. Seamus' eyes faded back into purple.
"So, with Aleks, you're mad that you went through so much for him, only to see him stuck here anyway?" Seamus asked, going back to their previous conversation.
Kevin nodded. "It's a bit silly, yeah, but I know I'll come around soon. Still a bit pissed for now, though."
"I totally get that, Kev," Seamus said, smiling sympathetically. "You want me to talk to Aleks?"
"You don't have to. I'll give him a bit to cool down then we'll talk." Seamus nodded in response. "Thanks though." There was a short pause. "Actually, thanks for all of this. I think it cleaned a couple of skeletons out of my closet."
"No problem," Seamus replied. "You need anything else?"
"I think I'm good. All I really need now is a good nap," Kevin said, with a thankful smile.
Seamus nodded once again. "Just come get me if you need anything." He pushed himself off of the ground once again a floated gently back into the big cave and soon rested on solid ground once again. Kevin curled up once again and tried to sleep.
"Hey, uh, Nick?" Seamus said once he had his feet firmly planted. Nick replied with an inquisitive him as he let his bow leave the strings of his violin. "You got any songs for, like, healing or just kinda getting rid of pain?" Nick nodded. "I think Kevin needs a couple of those."
Nick smiled a bright smile as he rosined his bow. "Can do, Seamus." Soon, his bow was flying across the strings once again, a wondrous melody soaring out, clearing pain and hurt from all who heard it.
"Thanks again, Nick," Seamus said, leaving the room, eyes glimmering blue.
Kevin smiled as a new melody filled his ears and he soon fell asleep, his pain melting away. His wings fluttered gently as he curled up tighter and smiled. "Thanks guys."
