'Well, nothing's gonna hurt me with my eyes shut ' ~ Eyes Shut by Years & Years
"Now let's move onto a different and certainly more interesting topic." His speckled blue and orange orbs glistened mischievously and not just because of the various lights that were positioned around the moody-blue painted room. "Roberts, no further evidence has been found or examined recently, is that correct? Well, 'Detective Roberts', you and your little dependable team need to get a move on; we are vastly running out of time."
A barely visible, annoyed eye roll was just missed as he visibly stiffened on his rough seat and forcefully answered, "Yes sir, I understand. However, we are doing what we can."
"I realise this and have accounted it towards my end decision. You are dismissed." With a minute glamourous wave of his hand he dismissed from the catch-up conference.
Sharply fired questions and answers filled his vulnerable ears, the intruding clamour being too much pressure to handle.
"Okay! Quiet please everyone! This is ridiculous." He muttered under his breath whilst shaking from how swarmed the area was. "I have been thinking of various ways to approach this. Now, first of all, I need Penski to come with me, I have a task for you," he formally excused himself and left the room with Archie hot on his tail.
"Archie, I am trusting you to do this properly. We should have done this a long time ago; hell, it's been 3 weeks already. So enough of this spreading stupidity, we are going to do things right. Now this is what you will do..." Alan explained the task cautiously. No, it wasn't a hard task; it was quite simple. It was just the people he would be dealing with.
"Detective, I doubt this will change anything. I don't wish to be impolite but it will probably make things worse." A few more words danced to and fro in the freshened air until Archie was certain of what he needed to do.
"Take this with you, and when they start balling politely excuse yourself and leave as hastily as you can manage." Archie couldn't help but chuckle at the serious tone, Detective Roberts was taking this case more seriously than any other before. Only because he knows he is failing his conscience reminded. He accepted the handed clipboard and left the room without a further discussion.
Half an hour later he was perched quite stiffly on a flowery, delicate antique-life sofa whilst sipping on a hot chocolate; no matter what age, he would always love them. Sitting opposite him were two frozen skeletons, each accompanied by their own cups of steaming hot tea. Both had blinded by the one they loved and now were paying the consequence for loving him so dearly.
"Mr and Mrs Earl, I must thank you once again for letting me into your home. It must be a hard period in time, I completely understand." He was impressed in a way; most couples who lost their kid, or kids, due to some unknown reason, divorced, turned to drugs and alcohol for comfort, or cheated on their spouse – which then most likely led to divorce. It was an ongoing chain. Even though they were less productive than a fork during a round of pizza, it was nice to finally see a couple who stand by each other.
"It's fine, we haven't had a visitor in weeks; except for the indecorous man who comes to talk about rent. Some new company is nice every now and then." A hoarse whisper echoed, emitting from Thomas Earl. Archie peered into his dull orbs, instantly noticing the soulless and empty darkness hidden behind them.
"I have a few further questions for you, all of them contradicting to the ones we asked you at the start."
Rosa stood up swiftly, her following footsteps being left behind to trail after her. Cold air rushed passed them, intoxicating the awkward atmosphere. Thomas simply stared at the door, as if her presence hadn't just left them. Even though he knew why she had done it, Archie couldn't help but feel a bit offended; it was a rude gesture.
"Go ahead, we've got nothing else to lose anyway," a few tears leaked down his dry and abused cheeks, the first drops of water in weeks absorbed within seconds.
"In all due respect, I do not wish to ask you about Charles. Due to the lack of evidence and alibi, we believe that he was merely at the wrong place, wrong time. The murderer may have killed him on purpose, but he was not targeted beforehand. He had no reason at all to be targeted because he was only three years old."
Silence devoured the air as the number was muttered leisurely; his extreme youth shattering their hearts from within. Archie took the silence as a note ti carry on speaking.
"From the files and from where we are now, obviously, I can see that you have, quite promptly, moved house."
"Yes, we moved within the first week of Charles' death. After looking for a fairly priced, but suitable, rented home for the two of us, we left as soon as we could." With his head facing the tattered floor, half of his murmured words were barely audible.
"Is there any other reason as to why you left? Any major concerns about the mansion? Because, it is a very pretty place to live; passers-by love seeing the exterior and interior designs and what it contains within the, seemingly silent, beckoning walls."
Thomas laughed silently under his breath, the discharged sound being rough and abrasive. "The mansion." Sighing deeply, he manoeuvred his head so he was facing up, but still avoiding Archie's prying eye. "I honestly don't think the mansion has anything to do with his death. It's just the rumours about the place that made us decide to move out. When you find out what's happened there, you will wish you never asked."
Archie was intrigued. This was one out of a thousand steps closer to solving the case; unless it was irrelevant, of course. "Rumours? I've heard some of them, the recurring ones anyway; you know: ghosts haunting the mansion, spooky weather being initiated via said ghosts. It's all the same, really." He knew what was going to be said, same old stories, same old rumours, and same old lies.
"These rumours contain a ghostly element. But what actually happens is a lot darker and disturbing."
Archie put on a mask of faux surprise and asked questionably, "I'm not meaning to be disrespectful, but, out of pure interest, what is this rumour? It sounds fairly thought-provoking."
"Well, it all started 55 years ago in 196-, "before he could utter a single syllable, Thomas paused dramatically. His mouth was wide open and frozen in place; his tongue waggling dramatically in his mouth. Gurgles erupted from his throat and started getting louder and more prolonged. Then it all stopped. His entire body was motionless, his arms undeniably stuck to the sides of his stomach, the fingers stretched out and antsy.
Pleading green orbs sobbed their desperation as they fought pointlessly against the intruding controller. One last gurgle was produced as frosty ice took over his possessed body. It seeped from the tough skin of his toes upwards. As it crawled up his neck, Thomas gave one last look. Please, look after her. The frost consumed him fully and then made its way into his mouth and headed downwards. Archie's gut conscience was right. He knew what was going to happen next.
Suddenly, he ceased to exist. A hammer smashed down on him, pushing him to his breaking point; quite literally. He was already broken, and his own emotions were the ones that finally pushed him to the limits. Shards of ice floated around the desolate room for a few seconds, defying all laws of gravity, until they disappeared. Archie blinked. What did he just witness? An ear-splitting scream tore from a pair of lips as the darkness clouded his vision, disorientating him from all known senses.
A dull throb of pain radiated from the left side of his head as he raspily groaned, turning around, only to be greeted with a hazy memory and everything in double. He got up and when his vision finally cleared, he noticed the unfamiliar surroundings and all his previous events came flooding back like the tide on a winter day. Oh great. Wow, what a man. I screamed, and fainted, within the space of 10 seconds. Pat on the back Penski. Archie felt a pair of eyes bearing into his head and there was no doubt on who it was. His sarcastic, self-criticising thoughts drifted away in his mind. Rosa moved forward with great effort. Sunken shoulders and shallow, sullen cheeks manoeuvred around the dusty sofa set until they were facing him properly.
For the first time since the time consuming questioning, Archie took a good look at Rosa Earl. Greasy, coarse hair was matted like a birds nest on the top of her tired, uncared for skin. Her eyes were droopy, blue eyelids being too heavy to lift; the result of many sleepless nights. Purple bags were attached beneath her eyes as they gave her the 'living-dead look' people were rocking nowadays. All her best features had been destroyed by countless emotions. She was destroyed. The constant grieving had taken her soul, and now, it wasn't planning on giving it back.
"T-Tha-at p-puddle ov-er th-e-ere," she paused monetarily to calm her shaking nerves whilst simultaneously pointing shakily, "i-its m-my hus-band is-n-n't it? Th-Thomas?" She sent Archie a pleading look, pleading to tell her no, no it isn't. A series of nods confirmed her ghastly suspicions. How she had figured it out was a mystery to him, but he knew one thing; Rosa was alone. She had lost both her son and husband within a month and now, she had no muse to live for. No family to wake up to in the mornings. No, she didn't break down and start bawling. She uttered a simple 'have a nice day and all the others that follow' to Archie before grabbing her black, furry, leopard print coat and heading straight out the chipped front door.
A few minutes later, he also decided to head out the door, seeing as he had achieved a lot more than 'decent answers'.
That night Rosa could not sleep. The turning was constant and no matter what, sleep never visited her. Soon her eyelids could take no more and they shut until she drifted away into a deep slumber.
White clouds puffed up against a black canvas, the wisps dancing and disappearing into the obscure air. Out of the clouds came a woman, a happy woman, with a fully positive attitude to life. A woman who wore all white and was sporting a pair of wings, a halo perched delicately on top of her head.
"Come with me Rosa," she beckoned holding out her hand, "come and be free of all this sorrow." Rosa looked at the intruder with caution but continued her silence anyway. "Carrying the grief of your deceased beloved ones will not help you dear. You need to be free, don't you want to be happy again?" a nod escaped Rosa's rigid hold on herself. "You know what to do then."
Rosa gasped. "N-No. No, I can't do that!" she started to take unnoticeable steps backwards, building up as the moment passed.
A devilish grin overtook the angel's graceful features. Her blond hair grew long, rough, red and black. Blood covered horns attacked the wings and halo before they indignantly disappeared with a comical 'pop'. White was replaced with red and freshly ironed became ripped and rugged. Her overall demeanour changed; drastically.
A bellowing laugh bounced off invisible walls, echoing around the seemingly closing-in area. "You can't do it. Pshhhh. Oh, don't worry, you can do it. I know you can." She flashed a dangerous smirk, "And you will." Sudden shrieks emitted from Rosa as sunken eye-sockets stared at her; the glistening eyeballs twitching on the floor. First of all she thought the sockets were tearing up. She soon realised just how wrong she really was.
Red liquid started to crawl down the woman's neck and body, gushing down and coating the crisp, white floor. It started as a trickle and was now gushing down, destroying and suffocating every happy entity. Her eye sockets began to deliver even more blood as it spurted out frantically, hoping to bring evil along with it.
"You can do it. You will do it. You can do it and you WILL do it," she started to repeat every previous sentence, raising her voice each time one started; by the end she was demonically screeching. Rosa couldn't move, she was unwillingly bound to her spot and no matter how many times she tugged at her feet; they wouldn't pull out of her shoes. She was stuck. "Rosaaa. Rosaaaa," she taunted wickedly, receiving a sadistic thrill from Rosa's desperation to escape. "You know what to dooo. Do it nowwww, DO IT NOWWWW!"
Shrill words infiltrated Rosa's ears and began to tremble down; capturing the last ounce of control she ever had over herself. She felt paralysed to the spot, hell, she was. Suddenly she found a wet substance glide around her body, covering her. Her eyeballs turned to look below and to her horror, the never ending bloodstream was consuming her; alive.
All of a sudden, she could move her arms and hands once again, but it was just them. The woman's taunting face, words and eerie blood repeatedly ringed in Rosa's brain until she was driven to the brink of insanity. She brought her hands up to her face, repeated a single prayer of forgiveness whilst closing her eyes in reassurance and then opening them again. Whilst taking a last deep, shakily meaningful breath, she began. Messy scratches littered the surface of her red, sensitive eyeballs.
Soon enough they, also, lay bloodily on the ground, having been clawed at hysterically, lying beside her lifeless body. Manic cackles could be heard from the distance, indicating the end of another, sorrowful life.
