Chapter 5

'Some legends are told, some turn to dust or to gold, but you will remember me, remember me for centuries' ~ Centuries by Fall Out Boy

Walking through the doors of the local town library, two lanky and out of place men briefly attempted to search for the never to be seen librarian. She was known for being a stereotypical librarian and was also known, in most ways, to resemble a mouse: squeakily quiet and always shying away from signs of society.

Some have even rumoured that she lives in a secluded house in the middle of nowhere; the house being shaped and decorated as her favourite childhood book. Others say she eats educational books for breakfast and fictional books for lunch. Most find it quite humorous just to meet her, her attitude to life in general tended to make people feel better on a particularly rainy day.

Archie walked forwards towards the front desk and shook the little table bell.

"Hello? Are you in here Mrs..." he trailed off, looking around for a name plaque or something to label the mysterious figure. "Mrs... Librarian?"

A high pitched squeal erupted from the other side of the library. Two pairs of eyebrows lifted up in curiosity and slight terror. Alan took the first brave step and found himself moving at a steady speed to the source of the squeak, Archie following.

Peering over a broad shelf stacked to the rim with romantic novels, they watched the confusing scene in front of them.

The librarian was letting out emotionally silent tears as she huddled down onto a pink and orange beanbag reading an unknown book. A distraught sob soon departed from her mouth as she broke down into a fit of tears.

Quite startled by the scene ahead, they couldn't figure out whether to go comfort the stranger or to take the safer option and leg it. Most males are terrified of crying females; they never know what to do in the situation. Hell, even some girls don't. It's even worse if you don't know the teary eyed gal yourself.

A wrinkly and undernourished hand was placed in front of her mouth as she chocked back on a few sobs. Bravely, she continued reading the novel. Her eyes skimmed the next few lines of the novel briefly and, shortly, she threw her head back in a fit of raw laughter. The two men shared surprised and scared glances with each other, silently communicating about what to do. She giddily lowered her gaze back to the intriguing book but startlingly paused when her near-black orbs fixated on the two frozen intruders.

Roberts and Penski took the tense pause as an excuse to eye out her worn out features. She looked to be 70, far too old to still be working. Big, beady eyes stood out behind thin-framed, circular glasses which were perched on the bridge of her small nose; which was delicately right in the centre of her face. Her mouth was thin and purple in colour and tended to wrinkle unattractively whenever she moved it. Faded in and cleverly camouflaged whiskers sprouted out her cheeks and her ears were pointy and petite.

A hardly heard growl bubbled from inside her as she pointed her stubby finger accusingly at them.

"What are you-" she cleared her throat, ridding herself of the mouse-like sound and continued, "What are you two fools doing here? Couldn't you read the black and red sign outside? The very large black and red sign?" her hands rested on her hips as she spoke, he posture looking like one of an accusing teenage girl.

Both men looked incredibly guilty, remembering sighting the sign but not taking any notice of it.

"We sincerely apologise for intruding and not taking notice of you sign Mrs..." Archie surveyed her, still looking for a name badge.

"I don't mean to be rude Mrs, but where is your name badge? Surely you must have one, being the town librarian and all."

"I do not see why that concerns you at all. You've come here to take out books, well, presumably. You are not here to ask unnecessary questions about my lack of a name badge. If you wish to know my name, tough luck honey, because I do not know you personally and, quite frankly, do not want to." She chastised at the two grown men who both stood with light pink dusted onto their cheeks.

For a grandma, she was quite the character.

"Sorry Mrs." Archie squeaked out, fixing his collar.

She tutted pitifully and them motioned for them to speak, "well why are you here then? What are you looking for?" When neither of the men spoke up, she tutted loudly. "Well you obviously didn't come here to visit me, did you?" she said.

Alan decided that it was his turn in attempt to take control of the situation and spoke up. "We are from the FBI. We are currently working on a serious case and have come to research about the Shimada Mansion. Do you have anything at all that links to it...?"

Pausing thoughtfully for a moment, she let her eyes wonder around the room until they landed on a black door coated with scratched paint.

Following her actions they reached the door where the librarian pulled out a set of keys. She singled out a key, strangely similar to the one from 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'. Hearing the satisfying 'click' of the lock, she smiled to herself and pushed it open.

If you peered inside, the most noticeable features would be the array of cobwebs and spiders littered around. Shelf after shelf was stacked to the brim; it was like a library inside a library. It was beautiful.

Alan opened his mouth to speak but the words were nippily stolen from his mind.

"What is this place...?" Big, open eyes awed at the room. "And why was it locked?"

He looked to be a child at that moment; new surroundings always fascinated him thoroughly.

Mrs Librarian shot Archie a deadly look as to tell him to shut up before sighing heavily and turning around. Although, she had to squint; the room was dimly lighted and only half of each face was perceived.

"For trained and matured FBI agents you sure are a nosy pair." She muttered irritably and pivoted clockwise on the balls of her feet, the orange pumps squealing at the sudden contact made with the rusty floorboards.

"This section of the library is enclosed from the public eye, which means only I have access to it. This room contains beautiful books which have been preserved and kept safely for centuries. It contains unknown secrets and the origins of this town. However, there is a dark side. It also contains some books too... how do I explain it? Too daunting to let loose into society. It would freak the people out, to say the least. Some of the books here are full of raw horror, death and some of the most scary real-life encounters that have ever been written down."

The words were spoken with such sharpened sincerity that if an added torch was lit comically under her face, illuminating her features, the current atmosphere would have been complete. Both men stared at her, profoundly astonished by how heartfelt she sounded; the place couldn't be that old.

"The Shimada Mansion was it?"

Two slows nods were trusted with unspoken answers. Moving with heavy feet and a bad posture she searched a solid ten minutes before coming back to the frame of the door with a vary of books sat firmly in her hands. Settling them down on a nearby oak coffee table, she went back in to get some more.

"This is all I could find about the mansion itself. If you wait for a minute I'll try and find some old newspapers you might want to take a look at."

Deciding that newspapers would be very informative, they waited a further fifteen minutes for her to print out and find newspapers linked to the mansion.

Soon enough, they strolled through the library door, looking completely ridiculous on the way to Detective Alan Robert's car; a sky high set of books in each of their secure grasps and multiple freshly printed newspapers perched gracefully on top; until they flew off, compliments to the gust of wind peacefully passing by.

Red eyes burned in anger as they watched the two men drive off towards the FBI HQ. They were getting stronger, and every day they got closer to the truth, he grew weaker. Soon enough he would fade away into a puddle of nothingness and would not be able to fulfil his desired vengeance.

While floating around invisibly, behind the moving Jeep, the demonic creature sensed a whiff of fear radiating from behind hard coatings of trained professionalism and ego.

He felt that they knew that what they were going up against was no ordinary creature; no, he wasn't a demon. 'He' was a living nightmare waiting to be unleashed. 'He' just had to wait for the perfect opportunity to pounce. For now though, he had to wait patiently for what he deserved.

That night Alan sat in bed, reading his share of the books they had loaned from the library. Two books had already been demoted to the side of the bed as she skimmed through the third. Both books were nothing moderately worth reading.

Settling the book down on the lampstand next to him he clapped his hands twice and lay down comfortably, his head resting on the pillow that he vowed to treasure for the rest of his time spent breathing.

Alan lived a lonely life; he had had a girlfriend once upon a time, but she had been brutally murdered in a dangerous raid 5 years ago. You know the norm, she was at the wrong place, wrong time. He was into solving psychotic cases before her death, but it was her stolen life that made him absolutely livid when a case couldn't be solved. He never managed to get the justice and vengeance Thea and he so longingly deserved.

Warily he turned on his back, to stare aimlessly at the ceiling above, only to have what seemed like blue beams of energy shooting out his pupils. Blinking multiple times furiously, he looked ahead to witness what he first thought was a hologram appeared.

Droopy eyes shot open dramatically as he stared horrified at the scene displayed above him; impassive red eyes staring right back at him. Flinching slightly he let fear bubble inside, not really knowing what was going to happen next.

"You remember me, don't you, Alan Roberts?"

His voice droned on, deep and gravely, like a foghorn in a lighthouse.

"Such a typical name," he taunted, "quite well suited to such a typical man like yourself, don't you think?"

It took a while for the words to sink in, and when they did he shot forward and gripped the edge of his bed like his life depended on it. The demon is back, but in the shape of a hologram; he is here, without actually being present in the room. Who the hell is this psycho?

A strangle chuckle left the 'demons' throat as he stared in defined amusement at Alan.

"Oh, don't worry, I'm not psychotic. I can just read what you think. Personally, I call myself telepathic, with a one way connection. Some may even call me special, to an extent of course."

Like last time, a black cloth was covering his facial features, so Alan couldn't identify his face. What worried him most was that he didn't actually know if the 'demon' had a face.

What he could see were unmistakable red eyes, shining mischievously at him. And it horrified Alan to his wits.

Blindly, he clapped his hands again, wishing that this was just a messed up nightmare. But when the figure didn't disappear, terror violently pulsed in his veins.

"What do you want from me?"

Chuckling, he answered. "Oh, I don't want anything from you. You must be quite dense to think that." Somehow, he moved forward so his burning eyes were centimetres away from Alan's alarmed ones.

"I want you to carry on what you're doing. But let me tell you something, some things don't just appear in nightmares. Oh no, sometimes they appear when you least expect them to."

Narrowing his eyes, he ended with an 'I'll see you in your daymares' and vanished like a genie in a puff of smoke.

Alan knew that what had just happened was real; his trembling was enough to tell him that. A forming thought suddenly paused in his mind. The demon thing feeds off my fear. He knows exactly what effect he has on me. In the back of his mind, Alan could have sworn he heard a strained chuckle echoing in his bedroom, cackling in the shaded moonlight.
