Chapter One
Even after all these years Josh still lives in London. It's home and he refuses to leave it. Simon has been begging him to move somewhere new. Not necessarily to another country, but anywhere besides the London area. But since Josh is happy here Simon is willing to put up with it. He doesn't like to argue very much which has resulted in a very pleasant marriage so far.
They did, however, move homes further into the city so everything would be local. For example, Josh now only has a few blocks to walk to get to the nearest coffee shop like he is doing right now. As he grew older so did his love for coffee. Not so much tea, although he'll drink it when sick.
Josh is a simple man. He gets his coffee black. None of that fancy frappe-chino stuff like his husband. When you're a 33 year old married man, you just want your coffee and go. Although it isn't like he has to hurry anywhere. He still works at home on YouTube along with Simon.
Josh's favorite place to get coffee is a little artisan shop four blocks away from his apartment. It's the lovely month of November but a dreary rainy day today, which is a perfect day for a cup of hot, comforting liquid. He likes to get a cup and drink it in cold or wet weather whilst he walks home. Of course when it rains he brings an umbrella so raindrops don't get in his coffee.
The aging man stepped out into the streets, his feet splashing in puddles with his full cup of coffee in one hand and an umbrella in the other. He began making his way down the sidewalk when he noticed a woman speed walking towards him from the opposite direction. The lady only had her jacket over her head in an attempt to protect herself from the drizzling weather.
All of sudden the rain didn't seem to bother him too much.
"Excuse me, ma'am?" Josh reaches out to touch her shoulder.
"Yes? Make it quick. Please." She obviously isn't a fan of being stopped by strangers in the rain.
"Here." Josh hands her his umbrella. She looked at it then quickly took it. Josh proudly smiled as the stranger pushed their wet blonde hair behind their ears. She makes eye contact with Josh to say,
"Thank you."
"You're welcome." he responds. The longer Josh stared at her face the more familiar it started to look. "Wait-" he stopped her from walking off. "Do I know you?" She frowns, wanting to get out of the rain. Josh's face drops. "Freya?!"
"Oh god it is you. I was hoping you wouldn't recognize me." She coughs out a laugh.
"I haven't seen or spoken to you since, well, we broke up."
"And I slapped you..." Their vision both veered off in different directions. "Good times. Hey, if we're gonna catch-up we should probably do it inside where it's dry." she suggests.
"Oh yeah. I'll buy you a coffee, if you'd like." Josh offers as they wander inside the store Josh had just left.
Josh was in shock that some how his and Freya's lives managed to cross paths again. He replayed that moment over and over again along the thirty minute conversation they had while he walked home - with his umbrella which Freya kindly returned. She learned about him and Simon and what happened with Riley. And Josh learned that she did go on to marry only to divorce soon after and is currently in need of money. They both agreed that there are no hard feelings between them now that they are fully grown adults who are able to forgive and forget. In fact, this was the most they enjoyed each other's company since they first started dating. It seems the time apart has brought them closer together.
Josh unlocks the door to his average sized apartment room and steps inside. He throws his keys onto the small hallway table in the front and his coat on the, well, coat hanger next to the table. His home is slightly messy, dirty, and cramped but it's home to him and that's all that matters.
"Josh? Is that you?"
It's home to Simon as well.
"Yeah!"
"Jeez, what took you so long? I was starting to get worried, I almost called." Simon comes around the corner with a bowl and a spoon in his hands.
"Sorry," Josh kisses his husband on the cheek before passing by him to enter the kitchen on the left. He opened the fridge for a bottle of water. "I got caught by you wou-" He freezes when turns around to see Simon sitting on the counter with a little shopping bag on his lap. And a sly grin on his face.
"Go on." Simon says.
"What is that? Simon..." Knowing Simon and all the weird stuff he's brought home or suggested, whatever it is, it has Josh terrified. "Is it a gift for me?"
Simon only stretches out the mysterious bag and opens his smile so his teeth show.
Josh looks inside and pulls out a tiny shirt with an image of an elephant on it.
"Si I don't think this is my size." Josh put it over his hand.
"Maybe it's not for you." Simon implies, hinting at something else.
"Look, I know you're really skinny but I think this too small even for you." Josh sighs. The blonde hopped off the countertop.
"That's too bad. It's a shame it has a no return policy. Can you think of anyone this could fit?" Simon takes a few steps towards his lover.
"The neighbor's dog?" Josh throws out.
"Perhaps. Or maybe a baby." A smirk twitched on his lips. He closes the gap between the two.
"Yeah, a baby would work perfectly." Josh agrees, totally oblivious as to what Simon is hinting at. But then it clicked amidst the silence. "Simon..."
"Josh..." he smiled a fool's smile: Goofy and lopsided.
"Oh boy. First off you got this backwards. I'm supposed to come to you begging for a child, not the other way around." Josh walks away from Simon and into the living room. Throughout the relationship Josh had always been the one bringing up the topic of children while Simon was the one who dismissed the idea, uninterested.
"I know it seems a little backwards but you were taking to long to bring the topic back up again so I took matters into my own hands." Simon follows Josh.
"Hmm reminds me of our marriage proposal." Josh plopped down onto the couch.
"At least this time if you also bought a baby shirt you could return a lot easier." Simon hisses. "But seriously though," he snuggles closer to Josh, wrapping his arms around him. "What do you think?"
Josh let out a heavy sigh. This would be the second child of his but at least this time it would be of his choice. Not on accident. He and Simon did well with Riley that one year ages ago but that was only one year. This would be their kid, 24/7 365 days a year for the next eighteen years. Dear lord.
"Josh."
Simon's voice snapped him out of his trance.
"Stop thinking about all the bad thoughts I know you're thinking about. Think about how much fun it could be. Like when we watched over Riley. Remember how close that brought us together?" Simon places his finger on Josh's chest and mindlessly draws shapes.
Josh can see it Simon's eyes. The dreamy look he is getting while talking about it.
"Babies are the cutest thing."
A certain passion that is needed to love and care for a child. Simon really wants it.
"Okay. We can have a baby." Simon immediately lights up.
"Really?!" Josh nods. "Yes! Oh my gosh! I love you so so much, Joshy!" He presses a hard and messy kiss to Josh's lips.
"But the question is, Simon, how do we get one?" Josh brings him back to reality.
"Um, adoption?"
"That's a lot of paperwork." he snorts.
"Surrogate?"
"Expensive." Josh dismisses.
"Well what do you want me to do? Birth a baby out of my ass?" Simon sasses, raising an eyebrow and crossing his arms.
"Yes, that's exactly what I want." Josh chuckles.
"No, why do I have to be the one that's pregnant?"
"Because I don't want to be pregnant."
Neither do I! Do you the shit women have to go through for one little baby? Nine months of that hell? No way."
"Wait. Why are arguing about this. No one is getting pregnant it's impossible for us too." Josh knocks some sense into the both of them.
"Oh yeah. One thing I do know is I have to tell Riley the fabulous news!"
