Chapter Three
"Josh this is amazing." Simon sighs out in relief when he strolls into their room.
"Hm? What is?" Josh responds from their bathroom.
"I told Riley about us being ready to have a child, and she replied with more enthusiasm than I thought possible. Dare I say she is more excited than us?"
"Not possible." Josh shakes his head. "But plausible."
"True. Well, apparently she immediately told the rest of her family and Doug-"
"Simon don't let Riley rub off on you. Doug is a part of their family no matter how much we secretly hate him." Josh emerges from the bathroom and leans on the doorway of it with a towel around his waist and a freshly trimmed face.
"Ugh." Simon groans apathetically. "Yeah, whatever, what I was trying to say before you rudely interrupted me," he playfully whines. "Is she told everyone else straight after I told her and she just texted me again that everyone at her home is also happy for us and that everything is going great there!"
"Awesome." There's a small tug on the corners of Josh's mouth making him give a sheepish grin. He can't believe he has made the decision to become a father. Images of another tiny Riley running around their house... It warms his heart.
"What are you getting so smiley about?" Simon snickers. Josh looks up realizing his smile had grown while he was thinking.
"Oh, I was just picturing having a mini human running around the house." Josh shrugs.
"I know right?" Simon wraps his arms around Josh and they pull their bodies against each other. There's love in Josh's eyes. "I'm so... ready." Simon returns a gentle stare of unconditional love. "I can't wait to tell the rest of our friends." And that's when something breaks in Josh's eyes. "What?"
"What?" Josh panics a little on the inside. His positive body language can't trick his husband.
"Something's wrong. I can see it in your eyes." Simon keeps his arms around Josh but leans back. Josh lets go of Simon and breaks out of his hold. He sits on the bed. Simon looks at him with concern.
"Yesterday, before the whole baby conversation, when I first got home, I was going to tell something." Josh begins. "Something funny I guess. Maybe more interesting than funny but,"
"Just tell me already. It's okay." Simon prompts him.
"I ran into Freya yesterday. We spoke for the first time in nine years. It was... odd."
"Are you serious? Did she age as well as us?" Simon whispers. He takes pride in how he looks.
"I don't know? I guess. The point is we talked for a whole half hour, like we had an actual civil conversation. And, I also shared with her that we're having a baby. I texted her when you left to text, Riley." Josh shares. Simon face was in shock.
"That bitch? Why?" he spat with disgust.
"Simon, grow up." Josh rolls his eyes with a heavy sigh. "It's been nine years, we're fully grown adults, we've moved on. Everything that happened during our relationship is far behind us. In fact, we enjoyed each other's company. It was like a rebirth of friendship." Josh explains. Simon scowls at him.
"Have you forgotten about all the pain and trouble she caused you? What she said about, Riley? How she slapped you when you broke up?!" Simon exclaims, infuriated.
"I know, I know but she apologized. We all know the famous saying, 'Forgive and forget' right?" Josh wishes Simon could move on from the past.
"You never forgave and forgot with, Doug." Simon argues.
"That's different."
"How so?"
"Simon, sweetheart, why does it bother you so much that I'm talking to Freya again?" Simon doesn't answer Josh's question. "You're not jealous are you?"
"No." Simon shakes his head. "It's just..." He rests his head on Josh's shoulder. "It doesn't feel right having you share our personal lives with your ex. Not without my permission. Besides, it all feels fine and dandy now but what if she hurts you again?"
Josh chuckles.
"Hurt me how? I'm only texting her. I can always just cut her off. Don't worry about me love." Josh plants a small kiss atop of Simon's head. The blonde looks up and smiles.
"Alright. I guess I'll have to take your word for it. So what's new with, Frey?" he inquires.
"Nothing really. She's divorced and looking for a better paying job. Says she's in need of money. She sounded pretty desperate to me." Josh informs.
"That's too bad. I wish we could help." Simon says to sound kind. Josh nods in agreement pondering any way they could actually help. And that's when it hit him like the insane look on his face.
"Actually, I have a crazy idea. Something that would help both us and Freya."
"Oh dear god."
