Chapter Five

I was making my way to science when someone grabbed my arm. I turned to karate chop them and realised it was Owen.

"Look, I'm sorry about yesterday, I was in a bad mood." He apologized.

I sighed. I was going to be late for science. "Don't worry about it. I was being tetchy too."

He smiled at me and I looked at the sparkle in his eyes. Joanna was right. He was kinda cute.

And that, my dear Candice, was the only interesting thing that happened at school today. Boring day, I know, but what can you do? It is school.

I was dressed in a sleeveless dress, which looked layered around the bottom. The under layer of my dress was a dark purple whilst the rest of it lilac. The bottom had flowers sown across and butterflies were arching up my back. The front had flowers and butterflies on it too, and the dress was twisted around my breasts; it was lined in silver. On my head was a tiara which looked liked fine twigs that twisted round my hair and formed a wreath; the top had green and red tinted leaves that looked as if they were made of glass.

We were introduced to the community, some guy with blonde hair and white wings, who was the leader and his wife and children as well as several other important people, whose names I can't remember. I stood up straight, remembering the warning from my father about slouching. Me and my family faced the hall packed with fairies as they bowed down to us. My father stepped forward.

"Please, sit yourselves down." He told them firmly. Everyone sat down and I searched for Joanna, eventually finding her. She grinned at me. I zoned out as my father said how pleased he was to be living within our community and how everyone was welcome to approach him with any problems and some more things I didn't hear. I thought about that Owen boy. He was pretty handsome with bright blue eyes and dark hair. Definitely my type. I wonder if I'll see him again. I mean, I'm supposed to be mixing with other paranormals aren't I?

Once his speech had finished, – and it was discovered no one had any problems yet – the leader of the community welcomed him and we all mingled with everybody, the fairies spilling outside into the community gardens.

I looked around as fairies talked and helped bloom the flowers and trees around us. The garden was beautiful, roses lined the right side and daffodils the left. Ivy climbed the wall behind me and cherry blossom trees bloomed above us in various shades of bright pink. There was a worn out bench underneath the trees and fairies sat on and around it, talking to the trees. Bluebeard shrubs lined the pathways, their bluish-purple flowers swaying in the evening light.

"Hey." I turned to see Joanna by my side. "How's things?" She asked me.

"I only saw you half an hour ago." She had come round mine to meet my parents; they seemed to like her, thank goodness.

"I know. But something might have happened. You look thoughtful. You have been all day."

"Owen apologized today." I told her suddenly.

"Why's that been playing on your mind?" She asked.

"No reason." I said quickly.

She smirked. "Sure. Is anything else happening at this meeting?"

I shook my head. "Nope, just an introductory meeting and then we're supposed to speak to people. But I don't really feel like it."

"Because of Owen?"

"Shut up!" I hissed, not wanting anyone to hear.

She shrugged. "Why? Because you like him?"

I turned red. "No."

She grinned. "Liar."

"He's very handsome. But he's an ass."

"He apologised to you." She raised an eyebrow at me.

I brushed off her excuse. "Still an ass. I'm going to ask my parents if I can go. Want to come?"

"Sure." Like magic, my parents appeared behind us. Joanna instantly bowed. They told her to rise and I introduced them.

"Mum, Dad, this is Joanna, she's my friend from school. Joanna, this is my Mum and Dad. Sophia and Oberon." I waited until they got the small talk out the way before piping up. "Dad, can I go home please?"

My parents both frowned at me.

"Are you alright, Avery?" My mother felt my forehead. An idea popped into my head.

"No, I think I'm coming down with something. Can I go home?"

They exchanged looks. "I had better take you home." My father told me.

"I'll do it, Sir." Joanna smiled. I quickly agreed. After some persuading we were allowed to go.
