Chapter 23
Namjoon thought that night, they'd watch a movie they all liked, with Jin wanting them to try street food for a change, but seeing as Taehyung wanted to play video games, they let Jimin choose what he wanted, and in the end, Namjoon won. Namjoon had a proud smirk as he chuckled to himself, but Jin gave him a light slap in the arm, saying he shouldn't get it into his head because he was just lucky this time, that Jimin was up for a movie marathon. That just earned a loud laugh from Namjoon as he saw Jin pout and roll his eyes with a smile on his face, now setting more pillows and blankets in Jimin's living room. In five minutes, everyone was there with the lights off and the movie starting to play.
Not knowing where he'd sit, Jimin just chose a random spot on the couch, plumping up the soft pillows and putting a blanket over himself. Silently whining that Jimin chose Namjoon over him, Jin pulled on Jimin's arm, saying that he should at least sit next to him and cuddle because he was the mom of the group, and laughing, Jimin nodded in the dark and scooted closer to him. The shorter one found himself settled in between Jin's legs as Jin pulled him in even closer, Jimin's back pressed against Jin's chest and his neck on Jin's left shoulder as they watched the movie, and Taehyung, feeling left out, held Jimin's right hand because no one was there to cuddle with him.
As the movie progressed, Jimin found out that Taehyung must've been so sleepy that he was now huddled up in the corner of Jimin's couch, hugging Hoseok and sleeping soundly like a peaceful child. Hoseok noticed Jimin looked their way and he shared a look with Jimin as he smiled, putting his index finger to his lips, telling Jimin not to make any noise since Taehyung was sleeping, and Jimin chuckled, nodding his head up and down, telling Hoseok not to worry. Taehyung deserved to rest, Jimin thought. The jolly, hyper bestfriend of his must've spent all his time playing with his cousins back home, in Daegu, that he spent all his energy and now he was tired. As much as he loved his parents, Taehyung loved children, too. That was one of the reasons why Jimin had a soft spot for him.
By the time they started their second movie, Jin excused himself to get more popcorn, and Jimin nodded once again, making out Jin's silhouette in the dark, his retreating figure as he disappeared into the kitchen, and right there, Jimin noticed it had gotten colder, with no warmth surrounding him anymore. Yoongi was on the floor, his eyes glued to the screen, and Namjoon's eyes were fixed there, too, and he looked so serious that Jimin didn't want to disturb them. Just as he was going to excuse himself if he could go to the kitchen to grab more drinks, he felt someone else's warmth coming closer, that person sitting next to him and Jimin immediately knew who it was by the feel of that person's shoulder touching his slightly, and Jimin felt a spark igniting in the dark.
"What's wrong?" Jungkook asked, and though the older one couldn't see him in the dark, he knew Jungkook was worried, his voice lacing with concern. It was funny how everytime, the younger one would get worried about him, and deep inside, Jimin was thankful, but Jungkook also needed to know that sometimes, he's okay and he's not always down. During times like these, when he's with Jungkook, with Taehyung, Hoseok, Yoongi, Namjoon and Jin, he felt like he was complete, where he could have people to listen to him, be there for him when he needed someone to talk to, when he needed a shoulder to cry on. They were there, and Jimin felt so full, so full that he felt like their love was overflowing and Jimin can't help but think he's the most fortunate person in the world. When Jungkook takes hold of the warm blanket and drapes it over them like a cocoon, Jimin's sure he'd explode because he's getting so much love he didn't deserve. "Are you cold? I can get you something warm to drink."
Jimin smiles into the warmth emitting from the younger one, in his arms as Jimin snuggles closer, and he just wants Jungkook to stay. He'd rather have Jungkook stay in his place and not leave because his warmth was different from the others. Jin's warmth, Taehyung's warmth, they felt like safety, but Jungkook's warmth felt like home. Jimin's thoughts somehow told him that Jungkook's warmth was a mixture of peace and something else he couldn't pinpoint because it always made Jimin feel thousands of emotions deep inside, those butterflies inside of his stomach struggling and wanting to break free because it was all too much - Jungkook was too much. Jimin couldn't explain it, and he couldn't explain why he was pulling Jungkook closer to him under the blanket, inhaling the younger's sweet scent, that familiar scent, that Jimin's hand was now on the younger one's waist as he said, "You're warm. Your warmth is all I need. I don't need anything else."
If this happened a few months back, Jungkook must've turned a dark shade of red because he was shy; he was shy now, but unlike before when he'd turn red in an instant, he now learned how to react to situations like these in a much calmer way. Spending so much time with Jimin made him realize Jimin was the same, and the older one would get embarrassed and hide, too, his face all flushed, like any other human being when they're with the one they cherish and adore. Another thing Jungkook learned from spending time with Jimin was that even though he was younger and he'd also have those times when he'd turn a light shade of pink, Jimin wouldn't tease him about it, but instead, respond to his affection. Because of this, Jungkook grew to learn how to react to small gestures like Jimin embracing him that moment, and now he wasn't doing anything but bringing him in even closer, his arms enveloping Jimin's small frame.
Taehyung was still sleeping like a child, quiet and looking like he was at peace, and before anyone else knew it, Hoseok fell asleep, too, one hand on Taehyung's shoulder as both of them slept with Taehyung hugging him. Yoongi's eyes were drooping by the time the fourth movie started playing, with Namjoon already asleep on one of the chairs near the television. Jin's eyes were closed, his back rested against the couch, and when Jungkook found out that their eldest fell asleep hugging the bowl full of popcorn, he giggled.
"He's cute. Jin hyung," Jungkook smiled, making Jimin laugh silently, not wanting to wake the others up. Everyone seemed to be tired, Jimin thought, and he didn't want to destroy this moment because this was rare. They were usually hyper, loud, filled with so much energy like they didn't need sleep at all, but there they were, Jungkook scanned the room, looking like they were just like any other human being, needing sleep, so the youngest stayed silent with a small smile on his face.
The living room was silent, no tension in the air, no problems, just silent happiness and content engulfing them. By the time Jimin looked up, scanning the younger one's face, Jungkook was staring at nothing but the television, still playing a movie no one seemed to be that interested in anymore now that they were exhausted. When the younger one noticed someone's eyes on him, he immediately looked down just to feel Jimin smile against his chest, his thumb caressing Jungkook's waist just because he liked doing it, liked it when Jungkook would look at him with those wide innocent eyes and Jimin just smiled a sweet smile.
"Hmm?" Jungkook whispered to him, the light coming from the movie showcasing Jimin's gentle features. Jimin just shook his head from left to right, saying it was nothing, that he just liked the silence, liked looking at Jungkook just because it gave him comfort. "Do you want to sleep now, Jiminnie hyung?"
It would've hurt Jimin hearing Jungkook calling him 'hyung' once again. He was used to it, he is used to it. He's supposed to, but it didn't help how his feelings for the younger one changed ever since they've been more open to each other, ever since Jungkook's been embracing him more often, and everything else, and Jimin was confused. He didn't know what it was, the feeling of loving someone so much that it hurt, loving someone so much without getting the same feelings in return. Jimin's heart would ache, just like what he was feeling now because he knew that familiar feeling would come back soon, the moment Jungkook would whisper in his ears, saying 'Please smile for me.'
All he knew was that he loved Jungkook.
He loved him so much, and if Jungkook would just give him a chance to prove it, he would.
"I'm not sleepy," Jimin laughed a bit, trying to ease the tension, if there was any. The younger of the two was still looking at him, but then he placed his arm around Jimin's shoulder, bringing him closer to him. It was warm and the older one knew he was safe. "Are you?"
"I won't sleep till I see that you're tucked in bed, sleeping soundly," Jungkook replied, smiling and letting out a chuckle as Jimin playfully hit him in the stomach. "What? I'm serious here," he laughed somemore, making Jimin whine.
"Is that your way of acting cute? If you think it will work on me, you're wrong," the older one grinned, laughing, too.
As he smiled, he noticed Jungkook just grinned back, looking like he was admiring Jimin's beauty, his face so flawless, his smile so sweet, his eyes crinkling into beautiful crescents and Jimin was just beautiful.
Still keeping quiet, Jungkook suddenly stood up and Jimin frowned at the loss of warmth, but the moment the younger one got the remote to turn the television off, the silent snores of the others the only sounds that could he heard, he immediately secured Jimin's hand in his once again, and Jimin was unaware that a small smile somehow crawled up to his face, and right there, he was thankful for the dark.
"Where are we going?" Jimin managed to ask as they turned a corner and went up the stairs, making sure to stay as quiet as possible to not wake the others up. It was as if it wasn't his house to begin with, his brain still not processing that well to keep up to the situation, as they passed the familiar hallway to an equally familiar door that Jimin knew was his room. He was slightly confused, yet, not. When Jungkook shushed him and dragged him to that white, comfy bed Jimin knew too well, the older one didn't quite know what was about to happen.
"We'll stay here. I'll stay here. With you," Jungkook's voice was sweet, yet, deep as Jimin positioned himself next to Jungkook in his very own bed, embracing the younger one once again. He could practically feel Jungkook smile as the younger one rested his cheek on top of Jimin's head, Jimin's head on Jungkook's shoulder.
It was silent for a while, with Jungkook caressing Jimin's hair with one hand and his other hand bringing Jimin's body closer to his, and Jimin felt like he was being protected from harm's way, and he felt happiness radiate through him, and it was that good kind of ache, his heart swelling because he felt like he was loved. Jungkook's fingers combed through Jimin's hair ever so softly, and Jimin let out a contented sigh, his eyes closed, that smile still plastered on his face.
He would've asked how Jungkook knew where his room was, but seeing as how Jungkook came by to visit him and help Jimin take care of his younger brother every so often, Jungkook must have learned where his room was located despite the darkness, just reflex guiding him and now there they were, silent, but satisfied.
Jimin didn't want to say it. He didn't want to open it up. He didn't want to be the first one to say 'This is all too fast' because in all honesty, he didn't want any of them to say it because it wasn't fast; they were moving slow and Jungkook didn't see him more than a hyung and that's all there was to it.
"You wouldn't believe me," Jungkook started, slow, just like how things were between them, Jimin thought. Everything's slow, right? He asked himself. He tilted his head up a bit to meet Jungkook's eyes which were focused on the thick white sheets of Jimin's bed, the younger's eyes focused somewhere other than Jimin. Especially Jimin. Jimin just let his eyes travel from Jungkook's jawline, his chin, his lips, his cheek, his eyes, and of course, Jungkook's eyes looked like how they were, sweet, gentle, but it looked empty as if he was broken, and Jimin desperately wanted to make him feel full again. His eyes shouldn't be that way. "If I said I loved you."
Silence. Once again.
But it wasn't because he rejected Jungkook's feelings, it was because he didn't know how to respond.
Because what would he say to the younger one when he felt the same way?
"I do believe you. I do, Jungkookie," he managed to whisper, but Jungkook wasn't taking any of it. He really did love Jimin, but it was a different kind of love Jimin didn't quite get. The older of the two thought that Jungkook only loved him as a hyung, nothing more.
Jungkook stayed silent, and they should be accustomed to it by now, but seeing the younger of the two so quiet, not smiling and not acting jolly made Jimin's chest hurt and he couldn't do anything but bring both his legs to either sides of Jungkook's hips, his arms around Jungkook's neck as he frowned and sniffled, and he denied the fact that he was crying.
"I'm not crying," Jimin refused to admit, burying his head into the crook of Jungkook's neck, and also refusing to look at Jungkook as the younger one tried to pull him back to see his face, to shush him and say he was sorry. That he didn't mean any of this to happen. "God, Jungkook, just smile, okay? I break when you say I don't believe in anything that you say, or if you say that I don't feel the same when everything hurts because Jungkook, you mean so much to me. I can't even stand seeing you with other people because I need you so much," Jimin confessed, and this time, Jungkook pulled him back to see his face and Jimin just had to cry somemore when Jungkook broke out into a giggle.
"Hey, it's not funny!"
"I love you, hyung," Jungkook cut Jimin off before he could start whining and rambling about how rude it was to laugh when he was being serious. Jimin's frown was still there even though his eyes were as wide as saucers, apparently shocked about Jungkook's sudden I love you, and he just wasn't ready.
Those strong hands rested on Jimin's hips now moving up to pull him closer by the waist made Jimin weak as Jungkook brought his lips to plant a kiss onto Jimin's nose, and Jimin, startled, brought his hands to Jungkook's chest. Now Jungkook's lips were on his cheek, and his hands brought Jimin even closer than before as his body was pressed up against Jungkook's now, his warmth spreading through him.
"May I?" Jungkook whispered, his lips ghosting over the skin just under Jimin's ear, and his breath tickled the older one, bringing a small smile to Jimin's face.
His smile grew wider when Jungkook pressed his lips on his soft skin, tender, gentle, chaste. Warm lips reached his ear, those words registering on Jimin's mind.
"I have something for you."
Jimin felt Jungkook shuffling in his pocket, and a few moments later, he brought something out, reaching out to hold Jimin's hand.
"Jungkook..." Jimin whispered in the dark, Jungkook reaching out to turn the light on from the bedside table. In a second, Jimin's room was brighter with the yellow light slightly illuminating the room, but it wasn't bright enough to blind them. It was that good kind of brightness that Jungkook could now notice Jimin's soft features, his wide eyes, and Jungkook took this opportunity to secure something around Jimin's wrist.
It was a black bracelet that fit him perfectly, and he would've wondered how Jungkook knew his size, but he figured that he must've known by now because the younger one would always hold his hand, even if Jimin felt shy around him. Only in times like this, Jimin wouldn't feel scared to bring his lips to Jungkook's cheek, making the younger smile as he said "Thank you, Kookie."
"It should cover the scars you have on your wrist, but I want you to know how beautiful you are despite all those scars, and you'll still be the same Jimin I knew years ago, so your scars won't change a thing. You're still wonderful, amazing, and I just want you to stay as you are," Jungkook said, with bright, teary eyes, and Jimin was melting, not even ready for this. He will never be ready. Jungkook was just so sweet, so sweet that Jimin didn't even know what to do, now that the younger one was looking at him straight in the eye, still with that charming smile. By the time he felt Jungkook holding his hand, little by little, shy, Jimin just had to hold his hands, too, finishing the process, as if telling the younger one not to be shy anymore.
"I hate you because you're going to give me diabetes soon. You're too sweet," Jimin said, smiling wide as he leaned in. He kissed Jungkook's cheek again, saying, "You know...I have to go to school tomorrow. Because of certain reasons."
Confused, Jungkook frowned, sad that the mood changed. He wanted to spend those three days with Jimin and the rest of them, but now that Jimin's going to school and they didn't even have classes, he's even more worried now, judging from the way Jimin was avoiding his eyes.
"Is something wrong?" Jungkook asked, his eyes searching Jimin's for answers, tilting his head so he'd see Jimin better, but the older one just avoided his eyes even more, as if looking at Jungkook would let the words spill from his mouth, so he just kept quiet. "What time are you going?" he continued anyway, not wanting the topic to end right there, leaving him hanging. Jimin's been leaving him hanging ever since, and him doing it again this time made Jungkook feel something deep inside him - he couldn't expain it. He felt some kind of stabbing pain in his chest and that urged him to ask, "Are you going alone?"
"I'll be leaving in the afternoon, don't worry. I won't be leaving you guys in the morning, wondering where I went. I'm going alone, Jungkook, but I'll be careful," Jimin replied, giving Jungkook a gentle squeeze on his shoulders, trying to calm him down, but it seemed as if Jungkook wasn't listening to him, to any of his words because first, Jimin wouldn't let him tag along even if he wanted to keep him safe, and second, even if he'd ask Jimin the main reason why he's going there in the afternoon, he knew he wouldn't get an honest reply.
It's funny how I'm honest when you ask me questions, but you don't even take me seriously that you just find reasons to lie to me as if I have no feelings at all.
"Is it Mina?"
Jungkook's voice broke.
But nothing could compare to how much his heart shattered when Jimin just laughed, trapping him in his arms and shaking his head, saying that was nonsense.
"We should sleep," Jimin suggested, now going under the sheets and giving Jungkook a smile, peeking under the covers to ask him, "Do you wanna sleep next to me? I don't mind."
You don't mind like how you don't mind if I'm breaking because you won't tell me the truth?
"I'll sleep on the floor," Jungkook didn't mean to sound like he was mad. He wasn't - he couldn't. Lies after lies, Jimin telling him he's okay, he was doing fine, to him saying he was eating enough, and now it came to a point where the older one's saying he's not meeting anyone the moment the sun rises, and Jungkook will wake up, alone, to an empty bed because who knew if Jimin saying he'll be leaving in the afternoon was the truth.
As the bed tilted, Jimin knew Jungkook would leave the room because even if Taehyung, Jin, Namjoon, Hoseok and Yoongi knew Jungkook's always been so sensitive and quiet and just shy when it came to his emotions, like he didn't even want to open up to anyone, at the end of the day, it was just Jimin who would notice that Jungkook's that type of guy who would give up his blanket and give it to a friend because he'd rather stay cold than see someone suffer. It was when Jungkook's back came into Jimin's view that the older one wanted to say "Stay," but the moment Jungkook was about to turn the lights off, so Jimin could sleep, Jimin held his arm, his eyes telling Jungkook "Don't leave me."
"I can't sleep here, you wouldn't want that. They wouldn't want to see us together in the morning, with me here...in your room," Jungkook trailed off, trying to laugh it off, but there was something hidden behind those words and he knew it. Jimin knew it. There was sadness in his smile, his laugh, and the room was just quiet, silent because Jungkook knew he wanted to stay in his place, with Jimin because in the end, Jimin would only be a message away, a call away, but he couldn't keep him. He'd see him in school, in the hallways, but someday, Jimin wouldn't stay with him forever; that was the truth. Staying with him now would hurt Jungkook. As much as he wanted to let Jimin sleep in his arms, he knew saying "It will be okay, hyung," wouldn't matter because words were just words, and they wouldn't reach Jimin's heart.
"What are you trying to say? I don't get it," Jimin forced himself not to understand what Jungkook was saying because he wasn't making any sense. "Let them see it, I don't care, didn't you tell me not to care about what other people think?" he pulled the sheets down, all the way to his hips so he could sit up, using his elbows as support. If this happened when things weren't this way, if this happened when the mood wasn't gloomy, Jungkook would've focused on how Jimin looked good despite his disheveled hair and the sheets burying his small frame. The dim light didn't help either because Jimin looked so good, it wasn't helping at all. "It's not about them not wanting to see it, maybe it's you trying to tell me you don't want to sleep next to me."
"I do!" Jungkook said, almost immediately, and he got so embarrassed, even the dim light couldn't hide his cheeks flushing, red and obvious. "I-I mean..." he cleared his throat, but Jimin's smile distracted him so he forced himself to give some lame excuse. "They wouldn't want to see it. Us. Together," he said, adding a pause to the last two words, emphasizing them.
"But would you?" Jimin dared to ask, his eyes reeling Jungkook in. Jungkook looked surprised, blinking his eyes repeatedly because he didn't expect Jimin to ask him that. He bit his lips and was about to say something, but Jimin is that drug that makes you dizzy, that drug that makes Jungkook think his mind's in a haze and Jimin's just fogging up his mind.
"You're asking if I want to see us together?" Jungkook asked, and when it turned silent, the only thing that could be heard was his breathing, he panicked. Jimin still in his bed, positioning himself so he could look at Jungkook better, still waiting for his reply, was the answer to his question. Jungkook wondered how this turned into a game where they start to ask questions and actions were the answers to those said questions that were bombarded, and there was this war in his head, and he could feel the bombs setting off in his chest. "I wouldn't mind staying here with you. Let them see what they want to see," was all he could say and another bomb exploded, but this time, in his heart.
"Then let them," came Jimin's reply, a smile tugging at his lips. He licked his dry lips, maybe out of sheer nervousness or the fact that the tension in his room wasn't going to vanish any time soon. He moved the sheets and fixed the pillow right next to him, looking at Jungkook, expecting him to settle right next to him because it was Jungkook, and the younger one knew he couldn't say no to him.
It was crazy. Everything was crazy.
Jungkook thought he must've been dreaming when Jimin trapped him in his warm embrace, their legs intertwined, Jimin's lips barely pressed against his neck as he whispers things Jungkook couldn't register in his head with his back pressed up against Jimin's chest as they lay still, like the water lapping against the seashore, calm, peaceful. The stillness was gone the moment Jimin softly kissed the back of Jungkook's neck, and the high tide came rushing in, like how it brought Jimin into his life, and Jungkook had to squeeze his eyes shut because maybe, this was a dream.
He hoped it was a dream.
