Chapter Eleven
The drive took about twenty minutes of the boys joking around and hitting each other and Lisa and Gina seeing who could yell the loudest as wind slapped their hair around. Lisa was glad that she had wrestled her chocolate brown curls into a ponytail that day as she watched Gina's lilac dreadlocks whip around her head in a way that was anything but majestic.
Lisa tapped on the window separating her from Leo and Chief. Leo pulled the small window open to hear Lisa, "Wanna tell me where we're going yet?" She asked, a smile on her face. Leo smirked, "We're almost there, Dimples. Just enjoy the ride." He answered before closing the window. Lisa just shook her head and turned around to face Gina.
"Lis, look at that." She yelled over the wind as she pointed behind Lisa. Turning around, Lisa saw what appeared to be a little pizzeria with seats out front. They pulled up into the charming shop and everyone began piling out. Leo made his way to the back to help out Gina, then Lisa, tossing his arm around her shoulders once her feet were planted on the ground, "Welcome to our sanctuary ladies. You're one of us now."
Gina discretely wiggled her eyebrows at Lisa before looking at the faded sign on the front of the pizzeria, "Little Slice Pizzeria? How did you guys even find this?" Leo looked at Jermaine who shrugged, "A few years ago my parents were going through a bit of a rough patch. Yelling a lot and everything. My sister was carrying a baby, but the stress was too much on her. She couldn't take it, her or the baby. Leo came when I called and we just drove. After a while, we found this place, and it's been our sanctuary ever since." Jermaine finished, patting Leo's truck nostalgically. "And their pizza is really good." Leo said, slapping Jermaine's head with the arm around Lisa, lightening the mood.
"Speaking of this delicious pizza, I suggest we go get some." Lisa said as she began walking forward, Leo being pulled along with her. "Red!" Leo called as they walked inside. Lisa was expecting to see a short, portly woman with a graying bun and flour-covered apron. She was incredibly surprised when instead, they were greeted by a large muscled man. His dark hair was sticking straight up and he had two full sleeves of colorful tattoos, though his apron was still covered in flour.
"Look at this, it sounds like my favorite bunch of boys." Red looked at Lisa and Gina, "And they've brought two lovely young ladies." At first, Lisa was wondering how he'd gotten the nickname Red, but he flashed them a smile and she saw his bright red braces. Lisa had always thought that braces were a bit dorky, but seeing Red with them, they seemed tough. A man's accessory.
"Had to let the ladies try the best pizza in town." Leo told the man. Red came around the counter and held his hand out to Lisa, "Jackson Percy." Lisa took his hand in hers, presenting the firmest handshake she could muster up. "Lisa Petridge, it's nice to meet you. I am in love with your entire look." She said looking at his tattoos before meeting his eyes again. Red chuckled and moved to Gina, who was blatantly staring. Lisa laughed as she watched her friend gingerly lay her hand in the man's rather than shaking it. She'd have to remind her later of the relationship she was happily apart of.
"Hey Gene Bean, you might wanna wipe the drool from your lip." Lisa called over to her friend, who turned the flirtatious smile on her face into a glare as she looked to Lisa. Red laughed and punched each of the boys in the arm, "Go on outside. I'll bring out your usual. And nice to meet you Lisa... Gene Bean." Gina's eyes opened wide and snatched Lisa's hand, pulling her away from Leo and outside as she laughed. "What!?"
Gina sat the two of them down, "You know what! You know." Lisa calmed her laughs down and laid a reassuring hand on Gina's shoulder, "It was for the best, honey. Don't forget that you have a faithful Jordan, just a hop, skip, and jump away."
Jermaine laughed as he accompanied the girls at the table, "You guys had Red blushing back there. We'll have to bring the two here more often." Lisa smiled as the rest of the guys sat down, "I mean, I really like this place, and I'm sure Gina can agree that Red is pretty great, but, my place is pretty awesome."
Jermaine smirked at this, "Is it a race track?" He didn't realize how much he wanted her to laugh until she did. "No, that's what the hallway is for. My place is a surprise. I'll take you all sometime." Gina pouted, a bit irritated that she didn't even know about Lisa's place, "I vote on Saturday." She said. All of the guys nodded in agreement and Lisa caved in. "Okay, okay. We can all meet at my place at noon on Saturday, and I'll take us from there."
Just then, Red came out with the pizzas. One meat-lovers, one cheese, two pepperoni, and a Hawaiian style. Before anyone could pull out their wallets, Red shook his head, "This one's on the house. I hope you ladies enjoy." Once everyone said their thank you's, they dug in. The entire time, Jermaine tried to say things to see Lisa laugh or smile. He'd never understood the interest in dimples until that moment. Watching Lisa, he thought two things.
The first was that, whoever Elle was and whatever she looked like, there was no way on Earth that her dimples could ever rival Lisa's. There was no way anyone's could. The other was how terrible he was for feeling so attached to a girl he knew Leo had interest in. As his best friend, it was strictly against the bro code, something he was sure he held dear to his heart before this curly-haired and dimple-cheeked girl made her way into the picture.
