Chapter One

Lisa peeked in the little window of room 127 making sure no one was there before she twisted the knob and pushed the door open. She could barely see once she closed the door, but knew she'd definitely be caught if she flicked on the light.

It didn't take too long for Lisa to erupt into a fit of giggles. Her excitement bubbled in her tummy as she slowly made her way to the seat she so admired. "This is crazy." Lisa sang to herself as she squatted beside her destination.

Pulling the sky blue folder from the basket beneath the chair, Lisa pulled the envelope from beneath her arm, another fit of giggles fighting their way out of her throat as she placed the letter safely in the right flap. Just as she was standing and preparing to run back to safety, the door opened and the lights flickered on.

In a moment of fear and anxiousness, Lisa sat in her usual chair and tried a nonchalant whistle, managing to only spit on herself. Mrs. Kleere on the other hand, jumped and yelped seeing a student in her supposedly empty class.

"Lisa! You scared the living daylights out of me! What are you doing in my classroom unsupervised?" The teacher asked as she began putting her lunch containers away. Lisa quickly racked her brain for a valid excuse, "I was actually hoping to uh, you know, catch you before your next class." Mrs. Kleere arched her eyebrow beneath her wire-framed glasses, "And what exactly were you hoping to discuss?" She asked, knowing she had Lisa now.

"My last paper, actually. My English teacher told me that was an A+ paper, and so we both felt that I should address you to find out why it received a B-." Lisa said calmly, knowing that confidence was key to not getting chewed out for actually delivering a love letter to Leo's seat. Her teacher sighed, shaking her head, "We scheduled a conference for that tomorrow during class, remember?"

She most definitely did not remember. "Oh! Then I should be getting to class. Wanna beat the rush, you know?" Lisa said as she eased her way to the door. With her hand on the doorknob, Lisa smiled at the teacher, working the magic of her dimples as she slipped out of the door, "Thanks for understanding Mrs. Kleere, you're the best!" Lisa yelled into the class before taking off down the hallway, getting lost in the crowd of students just leaving lunch.

Mrs. Kleere's fourth hour senior class rushed into the room. Bellies full from lunch and ears ready to listen.

Before anyone could sit down, Mrs. Kleere stopped her students, "Don't sit down just yet. I'm changing your seats, so everyone just stay there." Everyone groaned as she pulled her glasses from her brown hair and lay them on her nose, "Alright, Leo, front row, third column..."

Jermaine rolled his eyes as he sat in his new seat in the back row, which was only three away from his old one, and pulled the provided folder from beneath the seat. When he opened it, an envelope fluttered to the ground. The stark white material surprised him, as he knew no envelope came in the folder composed of looseleaf paper and the class syllabus.

Curious as any eighteen year old boy would be, he picked it up. The back flap had a heart on it. Now he was even more curious than before. He ripped the envelope open and began to read the letter.

     Dear Leo,

I know writing you a letter is a bit cheesy and cliche, but it's a bit awkward spinning around to talk to you in class, and you're always talking with someone else. I just wanted to tell you that I really, really like you.

Being a junior, I don't really expect much from this. I just felt like it would be best (for the both of us, trust me) if I told you.

If maybe you are interested in this whole new world (ugh, sorry for that. I watched Aladdin last night), then don't hesitate to give me a tap on the shoulder, stop me on the stairs, trip me in the hall (Please don't. You could, but for my personal health, I hope you don't.), or hey, if you're feeling extra spicy and wanna cheese it up with me, write me a letter back. I sit right in front of you (you knew that), and my locker is 2312 if you really wanna romanticize this affair.

If you completely despise me though (or just don't wanna go on a magic carpet ride), just pretend you never read it. Though if that's the case, you should still be nice to and talk to me. You don't have to still talk to me, I mean, look at this letter, I've referenced Aladdin twice and I don't even like that movie. I'm obviously used to rejection. (Though I still highly recommend talking to me. And being nice to me.)

Okay. I'm gonna end this train wreck now (unless you like it and think you need a friend like me).

Love, Dimples

(I'm pretty sure you don't know my real name, but you always call me Dimples)

Jermaine takes a sheet of loose leaf and and balls it up, preparing to throw it at his best friend Leo. He launches the paper ball, the wad of paper hitting Leo in the back of his head, showing off his exemplary basketball skills. It also brought Mrs. Kleere's attention to him and the paper he was provided with - and wasting.

"Mr. Montez! Does this look like a basketball court?" She exclaimed from her desk, her eyebrows raised in question. Jermaine felt his face heat up, "N-No. I was just uh -" The teacher interrupted him, already fed up after Lisa's terrifying visit to her class, "I know what you just, Jermaine. You just wanted to talk to Leo. Please, speak to him. At the library with the report you two get to partner on now. Ten pages instead of five."

The two boys stood up and left, opting on not arguing and worsening their punishment. As Jermaine closed the door behind the two of them, Leo punched his arm, "C'mon man! I hope whatever you wanted to tell me was important enough to get us kicked out of class."

Jermaine didn't know why he did what he did next, he had literally no clue, but feeling the folded envelope in his hoodie pocket, he didn't want to give it to Leo. So instead of giving his friend what was rightfully his, he shrugged, "I was just gonna ask about your research paper." Leo shook his head, "I was doing it on the ethics of politics, but we both need to come up with a new one now." He joked as they entered the library, Jermaine relaxed knowing that he was off the hook.
