Chapter 21
KETLIN
Not only this house, but also the surrounding was really nice. The biggest problem was the language, but Adam helped me with that. People here don't speak English that much.
We've been here for about a month now. Not even once I have picked up the subject about changing me. But I did hear him talking to Lucy about it one night. It was only for a moment when I heard them, because they probably realized that I was listening. But as much as I understood, Lucy had been right. Adam could't do it with me. But it didn't seem to be the only reason. And then there was something about hard self-control.
While staying here, I learned more about relationship between Adam and Lucy. Lucy was more the dominating type and often pesky to Adam. But it still seems she doesn't want anything bad to him. As for Adam, he almost always keeps his eyes open for Lucy. And then it sometimes seems, like he is ignoring her completely. But at the end, I think they both care about each other.
That day it was warm and the weather was beautiful. I was laying on a deck chair, in Adam's arms. I felt his breathing on my neck. A few times before I had noticed that he doesn't breathe at all. Finally it started to seem somehow creepy, so I asked him about it. Turns out that deemotays don't need to breathe. He usually did, because that way people around him won't notice anything weird. And he also told me, that in some weird way, they can still smell when they aren't breathing.
After that I asked him to always breathe, when he is with me. Because, to be honest, it somehow felt like I was with a warm corpse.
What more time passed, that less homesick I felt. I did miss Sara and my other friends alot. I can't even remember, when was the last time we saw each other. What do they even think about me being missing? What are people talking in my school? When I disappeared at first, it wasn't notified to the police. But mum had to tell something to my teachers. And Sara now knew about deemotays. Does she have a hunch of what might have happened? I have thought about calling them. But first I have to know, what they know. And maybe come up with some lie.
"What are you thinking about?" Adam asked, bringing me back from my thoughts.
"Nothing special." I turned my head to look into his grey eyes. Adam smiled and kissed me softly.
"What your nothing-special thoughts are then?" He spoke quietly with his captivating voice.
I smiled. "Let me keep some things to myself." For a while I just looked into his eyes, while he was playing with my hair between his fingers. "Can I make calls to home, or do you think it'll be too dangerous?" I asked then.
"I think you can. But I'd rather first get you a new cellphone and number, just in case."
"Thanks," I said, and then we enjoyed each other's company in silence. I don't know how long we were there. I also can't remember getting sleepy, but suddenly Adam woke me up.
"Your mobile is ringing," he told me.
I tried to listen but didn't hear anything.
"I'll get it," he then said and gently carried me off him. Then he disappeared. After a few short moments he was in front of me again, my cellphone in his hand. "It's your granny," he said.
I took it and answered the call.
"Ketlin? You must tell me where you are," she said in a hurry. She sounded nervous.
I frowned. "Why? I thought..."
"I know, but I'm afraid that Siiri has found out where you're staying."
Adam was now also confused. "How?" I asked, rising my voice.
"I'm not very sure. It's possible she has asked help from professionals. She left to airport today morning."
"What?" I yelled.
"I found out that she's going to Lithuania. I took the next flight, but I have no idea where to go next. I'm not that young anymore either. That's why I ask you to tell me where you are. Escaping isn't so easy anymore. I'm afraid she'll do anything to get you."
I looked at Adam, because I didn't know what to do.. He reached for my cellphone and I gave it to him.
"This call isn't listened or tracked?" was his first question. For few moments it was silent.
"Okay," he said then. Silence again. Adam told our address. Silence.
"Yes, of course," were his last words, before he hung up.
I looked at him. "Now what?"
"Firstly I have to inform Lucy. We need to be on alert, in case we notice something. If your granny gets Siiri on phone, she'll try to make her change her mind... Because she is your aunt, it makes the situation much worse."
"Worse?" I wanted to know.
He looked me into eye, and I had a feeling that it isn't anything nice what he is going to say. He doesn't mean that otherwise they'd kill her? Adam seemed to understand my conclusions.
"Ketlin, I won't hurt anyone... though, I can't say the same thing for Lucy. But there is also a way to make Siiri forget, but it can make her a bit mentally unstable. I won't do it, if you don't want it."
I sighed. "Is there anything else we can do?"
"Killers won't give up very easily. And if she is your aunt who is worried about you... She might never give up."
I looked down. "I hope granny gets here before her."
Adam sat besides me and gave me a hug.
LUCY
If Ketlin's aunt came with plane, she can be here at any moment. I'm wondering how it has taken even that long, it's already evening. Sun will only be up for few more minutes.
I made circles around our house, going as far as five kilometres. Adam stayed with Ketlin. I have no idea, how that Siiri found this place, or what she might use to hide from us. Wollemia is the easiest to use, and easiest to get. But if she is using something else, I shouldn't be surprised at anything else she might do. But I still hope that it's wollemia.
A few times I went to check on Adam and Ketlin. They hadn't noticed anything weird either, which scared me a bit.
And then I picked up wollemia's signal. But it was really weak, hardly even protecting the person. That was strange.
I carefully went closer. Maybe it's a trap? The person was next to a small building, which was a small shop. I teleported to a roof of another, taller building. There I had a better view of who it was. And I felt relieved, when I saw Ketlin's granny. Did she really make it here before Ketlin's aunt? I teleported behind her. She felt my presence and turned around.
"Lucy?" she asked. And I nodded. "Is Ketlin alright?" she then wanted to know.
"Yes. And no sign of Siiri."
She sighed and handed me something. It was something small. Looked like a crystal. It was yellow, polished and slightly transparent.
"I'm not sure, but it might help you find her," she said. I took the crystal.
"And I hope you won't... I hope Siiri will come to her senses. And please let me know if you find her."
I nodded and then watched her leave. I also returned to my search.
KETLIN
We sat in the living room, in silence. Curtains were covering the windows, but Adam said he can check our surrounding even so, though he didn't even move. I still didn't get it how they're doing it.
It was pretty late already and nothing had happened. Maybe Siiri actually doesn't know where we are? But then Lucy appeared in front of us. She had been checking on us for few times, but this time something seemed to be different.
"She is here. I think..." She was panting, and she threw something on the floor. Some little yellow item. Adam didn't seem to listen to her, instead looked at the small yellow thing.
"Where did you get that?" he asked and frowned.
"Ketlin's granny arrived and she gave it to me."
Adam nodded. "Stay here with Ketlin. I'll go find her granny and help her find Siiri."
Lucy wanted to protest, but Adam didn't let her. "You can't come. Humans don't have much knowledge about this stone. She might have not known that it weakens you." Then he took the stone in his hand and closed his eyes for a moment. Then he put it away and disappeared.
When Adam left, I became nervous. For a long moment we just stayed in silent with Lucy. I wanted to go out and find Adam, but I knew that it wasn't a good idea.
Then I heard something, my heart skipped a beat and I froze. It was a gunshot. And it was close. I ran to the door, but Lucy came to my way and grabbed me.
"I'll feel it if anything is going to happen to him," she said. But I knew that she was worried too.
I tried to calm down and nodded. I walked around in the room. While passing the table, I quietly took something from it. When I got closer to the door, I suddenly opened it as fast as I could and ran out. I didn't want to stay inside, when Adam might be in danger.
Lucy appeared in front of me again, but if she tried to grab me this time, she screamed and backed off. "Sorry," I whispered and ran into the forest, towards the place where I heard the shot, necklace with a little heart in my hand.
It was a pine forest, so I could see better. But it was already pretty dark, which made it also harder to see. I was despair and I just ran, not even knowing anymore if it was the right direction.
But then I saw something. A shiver went through me, when I saw Siiri. She was pointing her gun at something and was ready to...
"No!" I yelled and started running towards her. She flinched, turned, and I heard a shot.
I froze. I felt my legs can't carry me anymore. I felt an awful pain near my heart and I fell on my knees, then on my left arm. I felt cold. Something was like buzzing in my head and my sight went blurry. Then I didn't see, hear nor feel anything.
