Chapter 21: Graveyard Shift

With Malik's organization,  Calado's advanced security systems and weapons, and the coordination of The Unit, the Calado security force was more than ready to take on the night of the most important day. The Unit placed themselves in critical areas of the office building. Atticus was working on the computer in the surveillance room, the fourth of the six floors. Barnes and Apollo were the second layer of defense in case the situation was to go out of control.

Aaron was walking with Malik, who is coordinating with security team through the radio, inspecting the hallways of the executive level, the top floor of the building. Aaron felt weird as he never experienced a long period of time of just walking around without any sort of action, not that he wanted it to happen. He decided to start a chat.

"So, this is what your day is like with Calado?" Aaron asked innocently.

"Pretty much. The night shift is a bit important since anything can happen in the middle of a night in a big city like this." Malik replied.

"True." Aaron said with a smile before fading off. "I couldn't get over seeing the joy and relief the DJ, Lucio, had when you gave him the news, like the favelas meant so much to him. I bet he is thank Calado who puts people before profit."

"It's why I love this job above the rest." Malik replied. "I met so many nice people that are from different parts of the world, like Lucio. We first met when Mr. Calado brought some of the security personal and builders to the favelas to talk and hear the concerns of the people. He remarked that Calado is nothing like any of the corporations fighting for the contract. His support gave the favelas a reason to believe in us and we wouldn't be where we at without them."

"Yeah, I wish more companies can see the people have lost a lot in the Omnic Crisis and respect the unfortunate as they rely on what they have left.  Aaron replies.

"That's true." Malik remarked. He looks at his watch, the time 10:00PM flares brightly. "I feel it's time to do a radio check. He grabs radio and places it his ear. "Disciple teams, security check." He announces as they look out of the window at the end of the hallway. A few minutes in, he calls out again. "What do we have, Alpha?"

Malik got the team organized way before the nightshift began. He divided the entire security force into five groups of five members. The group names are Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Echo. The Unit was given a different group name, Blue.

"Nothing much." Disciple Alpha team called in. "Employment offices are clear."

"Go ahead Bravo." Malik calls out.

"The kitchen and breakroom have been checked." Disciple Bravo confirms.

"Charlie."

"Cafeteria and janitor station is checked."

"Delta?"

"Server room is secure." Delta team reports

"Echo."

"Negative activity on the archive room." Echo team replies.

"Alright, connecting with Blue." Malik reports before switching channels. "Oculus, how is the camera feed?"

"Camera activity is clear." Atticus reports from the camera room. Someone taps him on the shoulder, he turns around to face Barnes holding a phone in her hand. "Calado called in a few minutes ago. He says to check on some papers to be given at the secretary desk for tomorrow."

Atticus nods before returning to the coms. "Can someone pick up some documents from Calado's office? He needs it at the first level of the building so he can get it first thing in the morning."

~Vishkar~

A lone woman with dark skin in a blue dress with a robotic prosthetic in one arm quietly hustles her way across the rooftops of Rio, carrying a photon projector in her hand. She wore a white headpiece that projects a blue holographic screen across her face. Her eyes set on the main Calado building. The only source of light came from the giant sign labeled Calado, lit up an a in light purple color. Minutes later, her headset lets out a light buzz. She presses a few buttons, connecting a call from her employer.

"Are you at the Calado building, Symmetra?" The caller asked in an anguish tone.

"Affirmative, Sanjay." Symmetra replied. "Anything you need to add?"

"Calado's got a lot of security. You are going to need to break out the tools." Sanjay warned. "We want this contract, Sayata. We deserve it. Find something on him!"

Sayata nodded before ending the call. She projects a light blue bridge made of hard light. She quickly walks across the bridge to the rooftop of Calado before firing a ball of radical light at the door, busting it open. She quietly moves and heads her way to the executive floor.

At the threshold of the executive floor, she plants a device on the ground before moving through the halls slowly. She continued moving through the hallway, searching for Raul Calado's office for some dirt on him. Eventually, she found the room she was looking for upon spotting light coming from underneath the door. She decided to turn off the flashlight from her device.

At first, she intended to open the door and get into the office to get this done. But the light told her to stay put, as there could be one and more people inside. Perhaps Raul Calado is working late. Then, the door opens, letting two figures out of the door. The first figure was Aaron, wearing his skull balaclava and tactical vest as he holds the door for Malik Church, wearing a more comfortable and stylish Calado security uniform. Aaron turns off the light of the office before heading down the hallway for the stairs.

Symmetra lets a few minutes pass for the coast to be clear. She turns on her light and quickly moves to the office. Little did she know, a security camera picked up on the door opening again.

~Atticus~

He noticed the door of Calado's office moving a few minutes later. He reaches a radio. "Hey Manhattan, when you go back to get something, you need to turn a light on."

"What are you talking about?" Aaron asks. "I got the documents in my hands and on the elevator with Malik."

"I didn't send anyone else to Mr. Calado's office. They know better than to be in there." Malik points out.

"Then we have a possible intruder in the executive floor." Atticus says with a rise of concern.

Malik reaches to his radio and places it near his mouth. "Disciple Echo, head up to the executive level and sweep the room. Everyone else, move down to the lower levels. Oculus, keep watching the feed."

~Symmetra~

She scans the room with her photon projector as her only source of light. Soon, she notices a safe on the wall. She then opens it, only to containing a ledger. She opens and skims through pages filled with details of legitimate deals, building models, and personal notes written on the margins. Then, a sudden voice rang out in the middle of the room.

"Hey." She turned around to see five of Calado's security force. "Get on the floor, now!" One of the guards yelled.

Symmetra drops the book and raises her hands up. One of the guards move in, ready to detain her. As he gets close, she lashes her foot out, striking the guard in the stomach before pushing him to the side. She quickly levels her photon projector and charges an energy ball. The other four guards quickly discharge their laser weapons, but the energy ball deflects incoming fire. Soon, she launches the charged projectile, subduing them with nonlethal shock.

Suddenly, her headset receives an urgent call. "Energy drain?" Sanjay asked. "Why not terminate them?"

"You know I don't kill when I don't have to." Satya fires back. "I'll be gone before they wake up." Realizing the mission is compromised, she bolts out into the hallway only to spot three more security guards.

"She's has a photon device." One of the guards reports quickly to the coms as they charge to her position. Symmetra turns the other way and bolts to the door leading to the roof. "Target is heading to the roof. She has no place to go."

~The Unit~

Atticus keeps scanning the camera feed on the executive level of Calado's building. Apollo, Barnes, and members of Disciple Charlie walk into the room heaving all the drained members in Disciple Echo team. "They are unconscious. Do we need to perform CPR?" Barnes asks quickly.

One member in Disciple Charlie shook his head. "As a licensed medic, I don't recommend CPR. However, we need to take them to a hospital to treat them from being electrocuted."

Atticus nods lightly. "Have Disciple Bravo and Charlie teams leave with the wounded to the emergency center. I'll wait to hear from Disciple Delta once they corner her on the roof." As Apollo and Disciple Charlie carry the members of Echo out of the security office, Frank's attention returns to the camera monitor. He spots three guards from Disciple Delta pursing Symmetra. However, as Symmetra reached to the end of the hallway, the device planted on the ground phases her into a blue digital beam.

The guards noticed she disappeared, but it didn't stop them from reaching to the teleporter. Suddenly, the two devices planted on the walls let out a spark, frying the three in a non-lethal shock. Atticus slowly slams his head on his desk and radios in the rest of Disciple Delta. "We got more knocked out members. Head over to carry them to the first floor. We need to talk about what happened."

The camera picks up Disciple Delta team heaving the three onto their shoulder before quickly heading down the elevator. Atticus presses a few keys on the computer before ejecting a disk out of the hard drive.

"So, what do we do now?" Barnes asks quietly. "Whoever that was, she just fled the building using advanced equipment."

"I'm thinking of showing this to Mr. Calado, if not the CIA." Atticus responds showing the disk in his hands before placing it inside the case. "The fact she knocked out our security staff instead of killing them is interesting enough."

"I agree, that is strange." Barnes responds. "What do we do now?"

"We head down to the first floor and talk it over." Atticus answers as he heads out of the security office on. They head down the hallway and press a button to call in an elevator. "Do you think she took anything valuable from Calado?" Barnes asks suddenly.

"I don't think so. It looked like she was looking for information." Atticus replied. "A thief would snag and run, this one took her time."

"Good point." The door of the elevator opens up with a ding.

Suddenly, a loud sound thundered from above. The building shook violently, alarms blare loudly, flaming debris quickly fall past the windows. The elevator car quickly disappears as it falls down the shaft. Atticus grabs his radio. "What the hell just happened?" He yelled in panic.

"Oculus, Disciple Charlie have reported an explosion on the top floor. The roof just caved in and its making the entire building collapse on itself." Malik yelled quickly.

"We cannot get out of the building in time." Atticus roars back.

"Fuck. Then our only chance is the garage." Malik groaned. "The place was designed to hold the entire place."

"Running like hell. Get everyone into the garage." Atticus quickly grabs Barnes by the arm and head down the stairs. As they hop down the stairs, he could hear some crashing noises coming from above them. He sprints faster, realizing the building is beginning to collapse.

"We need to get to the underground garage before the fucking entire building crashes on top of us!" Atticus yells out of his breath. Hopping down stair case after stair case, the two quickly head down the building as pieces of concrete collapse from above, threatening to flatten the two. The floor beneath their feet begins to crack, forcing them to sprint faster for ground floor. Eventually, they reach the door labeled G for Ground floor.

As Atticus kicks the door open, he pushes Barnes into the garage first. Then, a piece of falling concrete strikes Atticus in the leg, slowing him down. Thinking on his feet, he rolls into the underground garage. As Atticus lays on the ground, Barnes slams the door shut, pushing her back against the steel door while the entire stairwell is buried in slabs of concrete. After taking several deep breaths, she quickly notices that everyone in Calado's security team, Malik, Apollo, and Aaron, made it down to the garage.

Atticus slowly picks himself up. As he makes a step, his leg shoots up in pain. "Fuck" He yelled before leaning against a wall. Barnes slowly grabs hold of Atticus's shoulder as he hobbles on one foot. Then, Barnes waves a hand out. "I need some help here!" Barnes shouted. "He's having trouble walking!"

Two guards from Charlie group rush to Atticus and carry him to the medic. The medic carefully pokes at Atticus's leg, causing him to give off groans. "Well, his leg is broken. Must have been slammed by debris." The medic reports. "I'll start treating the wounds."

On one side of the garage, one of the guard's radio in Disciple Bravo, who are outside of the area watching the destruction unfold. A few minutes pass, the guard turns off the radio. "Well, we are stuck here for a while." The guard says gloomily. "The entire building collapsed on the garage, blocking all the exits."

"Well that's fucking perfect." A guard from Bravo complained. "I didn't sign up to be buried by a fucking building. How am I going to get through sleeping underground?"

"Yeah, want to keep whining you little bitch?" A guard from Alpha group fires back.

The guard from Bravo team grabs Alpha's collar. "Shut you fucking mouth."

Suddenly, Malik sprang up from his seat, pulled out a pistol, and fired two shots in the air, creating a loud echo in the garage. The two guards let go of each other as the room fell silent. All eyes were on Malik.

"Now, if I must settle any in fighting again, you can find a new employment." Malik growled quietly. "I know the situation is bad. The best thing we can do is to wait it out and hope for the best."

He stares at the celling for a minute to notice a hole revealing the night sky. Malik moves to his car and pulls out a flare gun. "What do you plan to do with that?" A guard asks.

Malik aims the gun at the hole on the celling and pulls the trigger. The flare quickly flies through the hole and rises higher and higher to the sky before slowing at a standstill, signaling Rio outside that there are outside. Then, a rise of sirens blare from the world outside.

"It's to get their attention." Malik says with a little smile on his face. "Everyone, get some shut eye. The rescue crews will find a way to deliver food while they dig their way to us."

Then, everyone moves to their spot and hope they can sleep through the night. Aaron and Apollo open the trunk of a land rover to allow Atticus lay down without having him to sleep on the floor.  Barnes lays down in the drivers seat, Apollo lays down in the passenger side, and Aaron tossed and turned in the middle row. "I hope I don't die in here." Aaron muttered before laying still.

~Vishkar~ The Next Morning

Symmetra walks into the office, yawning a little. She calls for an elevator, taking her to the top floor. As the doors open, she walks to Sanjay's office. Opening the door, she spots Sanjay on the phone. "Yes, I heard about the explosion at Calado's building." As he spots Satya entering the office, he signals her that he is on the phone. "Yes, I'll contact the mayor about it."

As he puts the phone down, he spots Symmetra fuming. "You seem tired." Sanjay says with a straight face. "Where were you?"

Symmetra's eyes widen in shock. "I was out helping people from the fire that was caused from the Calado building." She fires aggressively. "I don't remember agreeing to blow up a building as our backup plan."

Sanjay shrugged. His shoulders raised a few inches before falling back down. "Calado needed to go, one way or another." Sanjay remains unmoved, cheerful as the morgue. "Besides, you're being a bit too dramatic about this." Sanjay quickly pulls out a tablet and passes to Satya. "Atlas News has the incident covered."

She grabs the tablet and begins reading the report of the incident. A moment passes, she places the tablet back on Sanjay's desk. "They survived? Incredible." Symmetra says with a sigh of relief, not having to live with a guilty conscience.

"Yes, incredible indeed." Sanjay says with a breath of annoyance. "Cockroaches. It would be better if they weren't."

Symmetra's eyes lit up with hope. "We should help the people inside Calado. They must be in a condition worse than the favelas." Symmetra says with excitement.

Sanjay draws a breath of frustration. "I don't think helping the people who are after our contract is the right..." Suddenly, he fell silent. "You know what, that's a great idea." He picks up the phone and places it near his ear. "I'm going to talk with the CEO. You have earned a day off for the work last night." Sanjay flashes a smile as Symmetra closes the door. Then, he focuses his attention onto the phone.

"Hey, Mr. Tassiter. You saw what happened in Brazil? " Sanjay greeted with a tone of concern.

"Yes, I saw what happened in Rio. And I also heard you failed to secure the contract." Mr. Tassiter yelled.

"The people in Calado are falling victim to a possible terrorist attack." Sanjay exclaimed.

"Don't you try to change the subject! I sent you to do one job and the contract is at the hands of some second rate businessman!" The CEO roars

"Sir, calm down. You don't understand what we can do with this. There could be a way to reclaim the contract." Sanjay said with glee. "We need a small loan of $20,000 dollars."

"May I ask what you need the money for?"

"It's to help out the people trapped underneath the building. When the mayor sees that we can handle any sort of problem like a possible terrorist attack, she will have no choice but to give us the contract. We will look like saints in the media." Sanjay replied as he spun his chair to face the window overlooking the streets of Rio. Out in the distance, he sees the Calado building, now a pile of rubble.

"What about the people in the favelas? They will still rebel as soon you start building into their homes." Mr. Tassiter continued.

"Oh, the people of favelas are going to get their homes whatever they like it or not." Sanjay answers back. "Right now, there needs to be an establishment of order and stability in Rio. The place is hit by a malicious attack and these squatters only want to continue to be sleeping in filth."

"Just get the contract from that stubborn mayor." Mr. Tassiter replied. "I don't care what you do about the residents in the favelas. We are here to make the world better."

"Consider it done."

Sanjay quickly hangs up the phone without saying another word and looks out the window. He can easily see groups of people, many covered with burn marks, gather around to help dig their way to reach the people trapped inside the garage floor of the Calado building. He smiles to himself as he just took a situation they created and spun it to their benefit.

A/N: Sorry if this chapter was a bit bad then it normally is. It took me forever to move past my writer's block and finish the next chapter out. Thankfully, I got the rest of the storyline planned before I prepare to close the entire story on its own. It's been fun so far to create a story of my own to go along with Overwatch, something I'm happy about. Until the next update, I'll see you then.
