Chapter 30: Temporary Setback
Back in the safehouse, survivors Liam, Kiera, Morris, Shay, and Jacob sat on the couches in the living room. They've been talking about their situation and wonder about the status of the American soldiers out on their next mission. Shay's been anxious since Emmet went out to support the soldiers on their mission to cripple Null Sector's hold on the city.
"Don't worry Shay. Emmett is going to return. I'm sure the soldiers will bring him back safe and sound." Liam reassures Shay.
There was a brief pause. Shay sight moves to Liam and the rest of the group, as their lives were saved by the same soldiers Emmet tagged along with. Something told him that Liam is right about his thoughts of the operators.
"Yeah, I guess you're right. You know, I want to know about you two." Shay says before shifting his attention to Keira and Liam. "I heard you were at an auto show. Were you getting something for her?"
Liam smiled quickly. "Actually, it was another long distant errand my uncle sent me. Kiera decided to tag along to help me get the car he needed, the Nissan GTR X."
"Oh, I've never heard of it." Jacob notes.
"This car is something different from the rest, beside the fact there are only 10 out there." Liam adds. "We were lucky my uncle had a delivery crew in London and shipped the car out before Null Sector launched the uprising."
"Oh man, does your uncle know you two are alive?"
"Yes, we sent a message to let him know when the soldiers rescued us." Liam replies with a sigh of relief. "My uncle did a lot for me and the first thing I needed to do was for him to not worry."
"That's really good." Alex comments in. She looks to Keira and Liam. "This maybe weird to ask, but are you interested in cars too?"
Kiera laughed. "Well, kind of."
Morris blinks a few times. "Then that Nissan wouldn't be your dream car then."
The blonde girl giggled. "You got that right. I would go for a Chevy Impala from 1976 any day. Baby is iconic and has style."
"Let's not kid ourselves. You were into cars because of that Supernatural." Liam scoffed. "A ridiculously old show by the way."
"Don't be a butt, Liam." Kiera gasps as she lightly taps his arm. "My mother watched that show growing up and got me hooked into it. You got to watch a few episodes with me."
"Yeah, when we get out of this city." Liam turns his head to the front window of the building as he spots headlights of an armored van rolling into the highway. "They are here. I wonder who else they rescued."
"Maybe some rich person or the mayor." Shay guesses.
Liam laughs. "It be funny, but amazing, if it's Glen Thatcher."
"I wouldn't be so sure. He is probably outside of the city, safe from this madness." Morris predicts. He is the first to leave the lounge as he makes his way close to the front door and waits to greet the new survivors.
The door opens nearly abrupt. The first person was a tall, but thin man with hair that was obviously buzzed. He wore a T-shirt and jeans, but the face made Morris's jaw drop as the first guest enters the room with what he could carry, a small bag of stuff that managed to remain intact.
"Oh my god!" The cellphone technician gasps. "Liam, guess who walked in."
"Who? Glen? It was kind of a joke, but..." Liam snaps before emerging from the lounge to spot the famous chef, known for having a spicy temper and heated criticism since Gordon Ramsay.
"Bloody hell, this is some community." Glen says as he moves past to let the rest of the group into the room. Adriana hauls her bag to her room with Leon following behind. Adrianna waves to the others as she passes by for her room. At this point, everyone inside the safehouse have stopped on what they were currently doing and moved to greet the third round of people the operators have saved.
The young lad, Ryan, enters the house last and shuts the door behind. Then, he hears a familiar voice.
"Ryan, is that you?" The young man turns to spot the drummer with his eye brows raised in shock.
"Jacob, you lucky cunt." Ryan hurries forward and gives a bro hug to Felix. "It's really good to see you."
"Right back at you, cunt." Jacob laughs.
As Jacob and Ryan separate from their reunion, the drummer notices Chloe staring at the two with an eyebrow raised. Then, Scar walks by and laughs.
"They call each other that for fun." Scar explains. "It never gets old for them."
Chloe laughs. "You don't say."
Stefan walks out and rushed to hug Ryan. "My god, its good to see you."
"Stefan, they rescued you too!" Ryan laughs as he calms himself down.
"I thought you were dead when they separated us."Stefan adds.
"Yeah. Still, I can't believe that revolver in the Smith and Wesson pub worked." Ryan chuckles a little. "But I don't think I'll continue the golden mile when this is over. I want to go home."
Stefan sighs a little, thinking back to where the pub crawl led them to. "Me too. Come on, head over to the lounge with me and Jacob. We have a lot of catching up to do."
Jacob, Stefan, and Ryan walk to the lounge together as Scar stays behind with Chloe to continue the conversation. The next moment, Emmet hurries past the two as he cradles his limp arm. His head snaps left and right frantically at the doors standing on both sides of the hallway. He quickly glances at Chloe.
"Is there a medic?" The police officer says quickly. "I cannot ignore the pain on my arm any longer."
At the sound of the plea, Keira, Shay, and Glen rush out of the lounge. Shay gasps as he sees Emmet sitting leaning on the wall.
"What happened?" Shay cries out.
"I just screwed up my arm, that's all." Emmet responds as he tries his best to hold out from groaning. "Can someone please help?"
Keira quickly checks on Emmet's arm. The limb twitches a few times, granting some more groans from Emmet.
Keira flinches. "Ack!! Your arm is fractured and disgusting to look at. What happened over there?"
"The bad guys were packing more heat than before. Thankfully, everyone is ok." Chloe replied. "There is an empty room, two doors down on the left. Can you patch him up?"
"Yes, but I'm going to need some help with that." The blonde girl replied.
As if the moment was on cue, Glen raised his hand. "I can help you with that."
The rest of the group in the hallway glance at Glen, bewildered by his sudden announcement to volunteer. Glen laughs a little before clearing his throat. "Look, I have some training in first aid to become a chef. Its good to know what to do when a kitchen accident happens."
Keira pauses before nodding. "Sure, that would be awesome. Don't worry, it won't take too long."
Glen shrugs, raising his shoulders up a few inches before they fell back to its former position. "Fine by me." He checks his watch quickly. "I can cook up dinner later if that's cool with you, Ma'am."
"Thank you, Thatcher." Chloe smiled. "Let us know when you're planning to start. We've got some things to take care of."
The celebrity chef nods before heading off with Keira and Emmet to the medical room. As the doors close, Chloe heads down the hallway for the operation room. As she enters, she spots Frank, Dimitri, and Aaron in the room. Aaron sat on a chair with his head planted on the table, motionless. Dimitri does everything he could to keep cool while Frank's palms were rubbing his face.
"God damn it." Dimitri slams his fist on the table as he groaned. "We lost the mayor and Mondatta to that monster, Solomon, and Null Sector."
"There isn't a lot we can do anymore." Frank breathes as he sat down. "Miller and J-SOC aren't going to be happy about it."
"Our plan was going smoothly, but it gets shitted on by some guy from overwatch wearing police riot gear." Aaron adds as he adjusts his sleeve gun device.
Chloe clears her throat loudly, getting the rest in the operation room to pay attention. "Get a grip, all of you. As much as I don't like what happened, we must face the setback and see what we can do. First things first; we need to talk to the Overwatch agent." The female DEVGRU operator turns her attention to Frank. "Find him and bring him to the boathouse. The rest follow me."
The four quickly filing out of the operations. Frank heads off for the lounge and spots James Logan chatting with Leon Hope and Tam Wolfe as they sat on chairs on opposite ends of a small coffee table.
"Yeah, you guys are safe." Tam began. "It's been like a week since my friends and I were moved out from the news station to here. We've haven't seen a single militant omnic or those crazy militia people ever since."
"Well, I've been hiding in a couple of places, like a church and an apartment building, that were quickly discovered by Null Sector patrols. But I am taking your word for it, as this place is more remote than anything I've hidden myself in." James turns his head as Frank approaches to the table. "Oh, you must be one of the soldiers Tam was talking about. Thank you for help."
"No problem." Frank chuckles a little. "But I need you for a minute. It's urgent"
James face grew a slight worried look on his face as he gets up. "Sure, I can help." The overwatch agent heads out the door as Frank took the lead. Heading down the hallway, Frank spoke up. "Have you told anyone about your affiliation with Overwatch?"
"No, I haven't."
"Good." Frank replied as his hand reaches to the doorknob leading into the boat house.
"Wait, what?" Logan coughed. "What is going on?"
"We'll explain later. Right now, head inside and sit down." Frank opens the door and taps the Overwatch agent's shoulder to enter.
As Logan enters the room, he immediately spots the boats suspended several feet from the floor. His eyes return to the room to spot a couple of chairs surrounding a plastic table. He quickly sits down he sees three other people in the room, Chloe, Dimitri, and Aaron. Frank stands next to Dimitri as Logan starts speaking.
"What's going on?" Logan asked again.
"Explain to us why you, an overwatch agent, are here." Chloe started. "Ever since the prime minister pulled all military forces from the country, we've been told that no one is going to extract us, not even Overwatch who are not supposed to be in the city. But here you are, suddenly showing up to complete whatever mission Overwatch tasked you with."
"Hey, Overwatch didn't send me." James snapped back. "I was here way before the attack started."
Chloe pauses, allowing silence to ease the tension. At this rate, there was no need for the chat to turn into a rough interrogation. From the mouth of the overwatch agent, he had nothing to hide. Chloe turns and quietly mutters a few words with Frank. The Delta Force operator nods a couple of times before he turns his attention back to the agent.
"Alright then, explain yourself." Frank began. "We need you to fill the blanks, starting with how you got into King's Row."
"Why do you need to know that much?" Logan asked.
"Because we need to report about our mission. All of this, the safehouse, the equipment, the firearms, the survivors in the building, was made possible from the coordination of our military commanders who are pulling every string they can to get us and the hostages out of this city." Frank noted.
"Wait... you're telling me..." Logan gasps. "You four are the missing American soldiers that were left behind."
Frank lets out a heavy sigh. "Come on, explain yourself. The sooner you tell us everything we need to hear, the more likely we can get our commanders to bury any evidence of your presence in this country that you're forbidden from."
Logan takes a breath, letting his mind go to the moment where he was told to begin from. "I came to England several days before the attack started to attend an award ceremony for a old professor of mine in MIT."
"You mean the Massachusetts Institute of Tech?" Frank asks curiously.
Logan nods. "Yeah, I was invited due my help with her research in physics, specifically in electromagnetic radiation. It's a really fascinating topic in physics for me because..."
Chloe cuts the conversation short as she rolls one hand forward. "Just get on with it."
"Oh, right. Of course." Logan says as he continues the story. "After the ceremony, I was having dinner at a pub with some folks. Before I could finish the tab, the gunfire erupted. Military jeeps and tanks were hurrying past the windows as Null Sector started the attack. I escaped the bar with a former officer of the SAS and hid in an apartment building. Soon, he told that he knows a way to get out of the city."
At that moment, the four operators raise their eyebrows. "Sorry, a way to get out of the city?" Chloe asks with skepticism in her tone.
James laughs a little. "Hear me out, please. He said he knew how the top government officials of the British government escape the city in case the city was under siege and where they are located. He took me and some survivors we found hiding on the street to one of the entrances to the tunnels."
Chloe glances to Frank as she holds a finger up, signaling a second for silence. "Do you really believe this guy?"
"How can he make this up?" Frank countered. "I sense he has no reason to lie. Besides, we can always check with J-SOC after this."
"Good point." She motions James to continue.
"So, we prepared to hustle for the entrance of one of the escape routes. At first, all I wanted to get out of the city as much as the next person did. But before I got on into the emergency tram with the SAS operator, John, and the rest, I decided to stay behind at the last moment."
Frank rubs his chin as he paces the room back and forth once. "So, you decided to stay behind to lead more people to this valuable escape route. One last question, as you're doing a good job here. How did you find your way into that fortress? Were you aware of the human militia roaming out on the streets?"
"Those clowns? No, they come in much later." James replied. "I was making my way to a church for anymore supplies before continuing to find more survivors when I heard some screams. I looked around, thinking Null Sector's troops were attacking someone. But instead, I witnessed a group of armed men pulling people outside and shoving them into vans before it took off in a hurry."
"So, you followed the van to the fortress?" Frank asked.
"Yes, but I didn't dive in immediately." The agent confessed. "I instead broke into the church nearby for any supplies. Surprisingly, the place has a good amount of ammo, despite that most of the supplies was looted. I locked the place down and looked at my watch, noticing quickly I have a strong signal. I had no idea why as I contacted them and reported everything I saw, except the militia. Then, they told me to keep an eye out for a lost American special operations unit. After I ended the call, I planned out what to do before going to sleep."
"You went in, underestimating the strength of the militia, alone to be easily captured by the enemy." Chloe concluded.
"Damn it, I'm a scientist. Not a special forces soldier!" James snapped quickly, with a fierce and brutal tone. The room grown silent in world record time. The overwatch agent sank in his chair as the four American operators gazed back at him. "How would I know that I was going against a freaking army with an international terrorist that the world thought was dead as their leader?"
At that moment, Aaron stepped in and spoke in a calm and polite manner. "Look, don't beat yourself too much over it. It took us a while after several encounters to realize they weren't anything tribal. But, you should've stayed put because your impulsive action made us loose two hostages Solomon held in that fortress; Mondatta and Nandah."
"Wait, they were there?"
"Our commanders pulled out of strings to give us the intel we needed to push on. However, we are at a standstill. We don't know if J-SOC can pull anything to get us continue the mission."
James looks up from his seat. "Yeah. Jesus, I'm sorry for getting in your way. You guys probably did a lot to get all of this together."
Frank nods as he wrote in all the details James provided. "Before I let you go, you promise not to tell anyone in here of what we discussed. We are more than happy to guarantee your presence in London will be buried if you keep your end. Got it?"
James nods quickly. "My lips are sealed."
Frank points to the door, signaling James to leave. Aaron opens the door and lets the overwatch agent out. A few moments pass, the rest began turning off the lights and moving the chairs away. Dimitri sighed. "You think J-SOC can do more?"
"I hope so." Frank replied. The operators walk out and head down the hallway with lime white walls, florescent ceiling lights, and boring grey title floor. As they pass by a couple of doors to the headquarters, Keria walks out of the lounge to spot the four operators. Aaron waves a hand as he greets her.
"Hey Keira." Aaron greets first.
"Hello." Keira greeted. From her lips, the greeting came out as more adorable than it was courteous as it sounded more like 'Hewwo'. "You guys finished up on what needs to be done?"
Aaron chuckles a little. "Not yet. What's going on?"
Keira smiled. "Adriana, Leon, Morris, and Ryan asked Glen to help him with cooking dinner for tonight. The new guy, James, is also going to join in. They've wanted to have some sort of Hell's Kitchen dinner for tonight."
"Oh god." Aaron gasped.
"You mean they are going to help Glen cook as he yells at them?" Chloe asked.
"Yeah." Keira confirmed. "That won't be a problem, right?"
"No, it won't bother us." Frank replied. We just need a few minutes to figure out our next move. What are they making?"
Keira scratches her head. "I don't know. But I bet its going to be great. I'm sure of it."
"How's Emmet doing?" Chloe asked.
"He's doing better." Keira replied with a smile. "He definitely fractured his arm from a fall. We found bandages and created a makeshift cast for him to recover. Glen Thatcher is in the kitchen, looking to see if he can make dinner for you guys."
"Wow." Aaron says in excitement. "That's really awesome. But he doesn't need to do that.'
"He insists of doing it." Keira replied. "After all, you saved him and many others and he is really grateful to be here."
"Thanks, Keria." Dimitri says as he opens the door for the rest. "We're excited to see what the chef has cooked."
The operators move into the command post as Keira turns the other way to regroup with the others. Dimitri closes and locks the door as Frank starts up the communication chat and calls Fort Bragg through a secured line. The screen lights up in blue for a few moments as Aaron, Chloe, Frank, and Dimitri line up in front of the camera before it changed to the faces of the commanders in J-SOC.
Miller clears his throat as he skips the introduction and dove straight into the point. "Do you have Mondatta and the mayor?"
"No, we lost them." Chloe reported. "An Overwatch agent snuck in and got captured, putting the compound on an elevated alert before we could start the mission. We could only save him and the survivors while the mayor and Mondatta were held somewhere else in the base before being quickly moved out by Solomon and his men."
Miller frowned, letting out a deep sigh within him. He looks to his left and right, responding to the committee murmuring all around. Silence slowly takes in as Lieutenant General Miller asked the operators.
"What do you know about the Overwatch agent?"
"He was on his own for a personal trip when the uprising started." Frank reported from the notes he gathered. "He went out of his way to save as many survivors as he could to take them to a hidden tram escape system that runs throughout London."
"He found The Queen of England's escape route?" Miller raises his brows as he asked. "That's interesting."
"You know about it, sir?" asks Dimitri.
"Yes, we are aware of those tunnels." Miller replied. "As a matter of fact, the secret service is given access to the tunnels to escort the president and other federal officials out of the city."
"So, the agent isn't crazy." Frank muttered to himself.
"For the record, this wasn't entirely the agent's fault." Aaron spoke out loud. "We didn't think Solomon had more than a militia in his pocket. He had a pilot he called Viper along with a scary looking knight the militia referred as Captain Flint."
Miller's eyes widen. "You saw Emile Solomon?"
"Yes, he was interrogating the overwatch agent while the guys and I slipped into the base in enemy uniforms." Aaron explained. "I'm certain that its him. He's alive and clearly behind the Synth operation."
Miller looks around as the officers in J-SOC murmured more. He holds up a hand as he looks back on the screen. "I need to discuss this with the national security council about the situation. For now, stay low and wait for us to call you back."
Chloe nods. "Of course, sir. We'll be here when you need us."
Miller presses several buttons on the keyboard, ending the video chat. As the screen returns to black, Frank walks forward to turn off the T.V as Chloe rubs her forehead.
"That went better than I expected." She says.
"So, what are we going to tell the rest?" Dimitri asks.
"Just say that we've made great progress on Null Sector." Chloe replied. "Thanks to the intel from the agent, we can move the survivors out of London."
"It would have been better if we saved the other two." Dimitri muttered.
"At least we didn't walk out of that fortress without any hostages." Chloe moves for the door and opens it. Suddenly, a shout rings into the command center. The operators flinch to the volume of the shout coming from the kitchen.
"What the hell is this?" A voice of frustration rumbled. "Undercooked at the bottom, crispy as fuck, and it looks like Gandhi's flip flop! What a shame!"
"Woah, what the hell was that?" Dimitri groans as he rubs his ear.
Aaron was hunched over, having a bit of a laughing fit. "That's Glen Thatcher, starting on preparations for dinner, or more like Hell's Kitchen." Aaron points out, chuckling in mid-sentence. He heads out of the door and into the hall. "I don't know about you guys, but this is something I cannot miss."
Frank and Dimitri nod as the young Navy SEAL operator heads off for the kitchen. Dimitri shook his head in amazement and turns his attention to Frank. "That's the chef that's really popular?"
"Yeah." Frank says. "His skill and passion for cooking aren't the only reason why he's so popular, apparently."
Chloe sighed as she walks out of the command center with the rest following behind. "I'm glad we saved him. I can't wait to see what they are cooking."
Frank, Dimitri, and Chloe lock the door behind them as they head for the kitchen, checking to see what the master celebrity chef is cooking.
A/N: First off, 5K+ reads? I gotta be honest, I didn't think I was going to get this far. I thought most of this site was into lemons and romance books of video game characters, anime, and cartoons, that people would give little attention to this I didn't think a story with original characters that brushes along with the Overwatch lore would get me that much.
Anyways, I'm so sorry that it took me so long to finish a chapter, but finals, procrastination, jobs, beginning of summer, and other BS that happened in since the last update made the process longer than anticipated. The next chapter is going to be quicker to make since summer is here, and I plan to write this out as soon as I can.
Oh, I have something that needs attention. Impure demons was on the discord channel and she commissioned a great art piece of the Unit. However, I totally blew it and forgot to put it on one of my chapters. I guess its better to do it now than never.

From left to right is Aaron Richards, Dimitri Khrushchev, Frank Atticus, and Chloe Hills. ImpureDemons, you're as good of an artist as you are as good of a writer, amazing work. Thank you so much for it and I am sorry it took me so long to show this.
Well, looks like that wraps up everything. I'll see you guys later until the next update.
