Chapter 5: Hellfire
The Hummer travels through the highway after handing off to Gerald. Aaron's eyes were glued to the sunset view through the window, his imagination runs wild while listening to his playlist with one ear bud on to hear any conversation that may spring up after pulling off a successful VIP extraction mission.
"I got to say, you guys pulled off a killer performance out there." Lawson remarked with satisfaction. "Lacroix couldn't be any more pleased and is going to give us more operations in the later future."
"I can't believe we almost got taken out in the river. Thank Overwatch that they came by in time to help us out." Apollo says closing his eyes. "Isn't it-"
Suddenly, Aaron jumps from his seat.
"Pull over, I see smoke out in the distance." Aaron shouts in panic. Barnes takes a look from the passenger side. She scans her side until a reflection of orange light, signaling a fire has started
"Oh my god, it must be a major traffic accident. Lets check it out. There could be people trapped inside." Barnes replies.
The armored hummer pulls off the main road and makes a halt on a cliff near one end of a bridge, overlooking the wreckage below. The five marines head out and look at the carnage below. The road is littered with the twisted metal of cars, broken glass, and pockets of small flames scattered around. The wreckage contained three automobiles that resemble a formation of a convoy, two heavily armed jeeps with a limo in the middle.
Atticus, on instinct, pulls out his binoculars and scans the highway. He spots occupants trapped inside, some crawl their way out while others stay behind to save who is stuck.
"Do we have to put out the flames before the cars explode?" Apollo asks in panic.
"No, I don't see any puddles of gas leaking out. That ticks off on being quick on rescue procedures."
"Well, that's a silver lining in this train wreck." Barnes replied rolling her eyes as she is horrified by the devastation below.
Atticus continues to scan until he quickly stores his binoculars away. "I spot one unknown QRF ahead, about 20 kilometers. It doesn't look like it is roadside assistance."
"We may have a fight on our hands. Same rules on engagement, weapons free when fired upon." Lawson remarks before he quickly turns to Aaron. "Did you bring The Legend?"
Aaron takes a look at his weapon bag before answering back. "Yes, sir."
"Alright, this may be a critical situation. I want you to take overwatch position on the cliff. Your sniper rifle will quickly take out anyone that fires upon us." Lawson turns his attention to the rest.
"Everyone else, repel down the bridge and make your way through the road. If you have a favorite Overwatch hero from your childhood, today is your lucky day. We are going to help them out as we represent what our country's best Special Forces unit can do. You ready?
"HOO-RAH!" The rest shouted all together before sprinting into action.
Lawson and the rest each grab a length of cable rope from the SUV and attach it to a railing of the bridge behind the wreckage. The four stood on top of the railing before they repel, running down the support beams of the bridge as if they acquired spider like powers, before landing on their feet underneath the bridge. Lawson circles the air with his hand, facing flat horizontally. The team moves forward, heading to the first car.
On the cliff, Aaron lies down flat on his stomach, opening the retina scope cover before flipping the cover near the long barrel of the .300 Win mag to prevent light reflecting off of the glass. He inserts a clip in, adjusts the scope, and takes a breath for the first shot. The highway became like an American football field in his eyes, his mates head their way to the other side dangerously occupied by Talon soldiers to stop the thugs from executing any Overwatch heroes.
The ground unit heads near the first car as gunfire erupts, bullets slamming against the metal work around as seven Talon combatants engage their targets. Two Talon operatives start advancing forward, closing in on the SUV at their end. Suddenly, one operative spins around several times before slamming to the ground with a hole through the head as the shot echoes throughout the highway. The sudden gunshot frightened the other, making him ignore the SUV and dove for cover. The sniper on the cliff has a bead on the combatants. Lawson is on full alert.
"WEAPONS FREE!! Apollo, Atticus, secure that limo!"
Atticus and Apollo crouch down before firing back at the Talon operatives.
"Barnes, get any capable friendly soldiers in the vehicle at Oscar Mike". Lawson orders. Oscar Mike was military code word to have subject in full condition, health and combat.
The Unit didn't call the heroes by their codenames such as Reinhardt and Mercy as they prep and arm the Overwatch agents to help Apollo and Atticus head their way to the limo.
The two reach in the first SUV, pulling out Reinhardt, Mei, and Mercy out of the wreckage while Apollo and Atticus, hunkered down in cover in front, pick off the Talon soldiers attempting to finish off anyone trapped in the car at the other end of the highway. As The Unit helped the last person out of the SUV, three more Talon vans out in the distance roar into the fight.
Back on the cliff, Aaron picks off the driver in the lead vehicle of the pack. The bullet demolishes the windshield as it wounds his right shoulder so hard the right arm fell off entirely. The van to spins out and rolls over to the side. The other vans skid to a halt for a moment to avoid a pile up. Looking around the wreckage with the scope, he spots occupants crawling out of the wrecked limo, heading out of the highway.
Aaron reaches to his headset. "General Lawson, I spot possible friendly combatants and civilians emerging out of the limo. Head over there and get them the hell out of the kill zone, now."
"One thing at a time, kid." Barnes fires back before signaling Apollo and Atticus to sprint for the Limo to provide covering fire for the civilians. As they reach the limo, Apollo and Atticus fortify the new location by taking cover in front of the long car and pick off any Talon soldier breaking from cover.
While the firefight rages intensely, Barnes breaks open a door of the limo to pull out Jack Morrison and Tracer. Meanwhile, Lawson stayed back with Reinhardt at the first SUV to help get the German crusader in his armor. As Barnes turns around to see Reinhardt ready to fight, she spoke into the headset.
"Aaron, you are going to have friendly support. Watch your fire."
As Aaron scans the area of the limo, he spots Reinhardt stomping into the battle in his giant crusader armor. Barnes pulls out more occupants from the wreckage as the iron knight projects a blue energy shield for The Unit and the Overwatch team to take cover. Apollo and Atticus pick off more Talon soldiers thanks to their shots able to go through the blue shield without suffering any return fire. Tracer blinks around the highway, taking out some Talon operatives with her dual SMGs, before teleporting next to Barnes who is behind a guardrail.
"Jesus, you scared me." Barnes screamed in shock as Tracer phases out of blink.
"Sorry luv, couldn't help but notice the unexpected support." Tracer chuckles. Then, she blinks a couple of times. "Hold on... are you the yanks called The Unit?"
"Maybe. What makes you say that?"
"Cause I'm getting flashbacks to King's Row. That wouldn't happen to be you guys?"
"That was us." Barnes states as she fires her M16 rifle a few times, picking off more grunts moving from cover.
"No way!" Tracer says in excitement while she fires a volley of energy from her SMGs. "So, is it just you and the two blokes in front of the limo?"
Barnes shakes her head . "Our commander is at the SUV behind us helping your medic tending the wounded. We also have a sniper watching our backs." Suddenly, a voice shouts out through the intense gunfire.
"Hey, cut down the chit chat and finish off the grunts. Aaron's seeing explosive weapons in play." Atticus shouts.
"Like what-"
Suddenly, an explosion rams Reinhardt's shield. Cracks begin to form on the face. Talon realized there was no point bouncing bullets off that energy wall and switched on to rocket launchers and explosive weapons to shatter the shield. Barnes reaches back to her radio.
"Manhattan, you got Talon with RPGs and explosives! Smite these bitches!" Barnes shouts through the radio.
Aaron takes a breath. He clips the people with RPGs, causing them to fall down one by one. Minutes pass as the forces of Overwatch and The Unit cut down the rest of the operatives. As Aaron scans the area for more targets, he spots something horrific while searching for more tangos with RPGs. A teenage boy, no younger than 15, is dragging a smaller girl out of the limo across the highway and into the bushes. It was a terrifying sight for Aaron to see, as the kid shouldn't go through dragging his sister in the middle of a intense firefight. Aaron growls quietly as he mutters how the bastards are going to pay for inflicting such horror to civilians.
Minutes pass, the assault quickly became a impossible win for Talon's goons. Reinhardt's shield held back Talon's offensive line long enough for the heroes to assist The Unit. Torbjorn sets up his sentry gun to help The Unit pick off more foot soldiers as Tracer keep Talon distracted from focusing fire on the shield by blinking in different areas. Aaron fires more rounds, picking off enemy mercenaries focusing on taking out a durable energy shield protecting The Unit and Overwatch agents as Talon agents sat still in cover.
Realizing the fight was lost, Talon operatives begin to turn around and head the other direction to retreat, leaving the desolated highway. As the gunfire dies down, Barnes holds out a fist in the air, signaling The Unit to cease-fire.
Lawson reaches to his radio. "Hey, are there any more OpFor out there?"
Aaron scans the area with the scope to check for any stranglers. "I don't think so. You guys seem are all clear from here."
"All clear everyone. Operators, assemble at the limo near the bridge." Barnes commands to the team. She looks around to spot Tracer wandering near the wreckage of the destroyed limo. "Are we missing anyone?" Barnes asks with concern.
"Yes, two kids named Charles and Jennie Williams. Their late parents were agents of Overwatch. They asked us to look after them. Can you help find the two?" Lena pleads with concern.
"Of course." Barnes turns on her radio. "Team, we are looking for two civilians, a boy and a girl. Grief and Ursus, take a look at the third SUV. Manhattan, can you scan the area to see if they are hiding out in the grass of the highway?"
Aaron's memory comes back to him. "The two children? I think they are around the limo wreckage. I can't be sure from all the smoke though." Aaron calls out to Barnes.
"Thanks." She turns her attention to Tracer. "Our sniper says to check the limo area, they could be hiding somewhere". Tracer blinks off and calls out their names a few times until the two children pop from the bushes and rush to Lena with open arms, embracing them with a hug. It seemed that the girl the kid, Charles, was dragging to the bushes turned out alright.
"Team, we found them. All parties accounted for. Good job everyone. Regroup to the first SUV so we can RTB." Lawson states with pride. They managed to help the agents get up on their feet before it was too late.
As Aaron checks the area for any Talon grunt hiding, he spots a flash from the second SUV. He quickly gets on the radio, fearing there could be a sniper hiding to take a few agents down. "Hey, I spot something from the van furthest from the bridge. I can't tell from all the smoke."
Barnes nods before turning her attention to the two fighters. "Apollo, have you checked the second SUV yet? Our sniper says there is something at that end. But he can't confirm what it is."
"Not yet, sweeping the vehicle." Apollo replies. Atticus and the Russian move slowly until they spot a Talon operative hiding behind a bush next to the vehicle with an RPG. The iron sights of the rocket launcher line up to Reinhardt, who is surrounded by Overwatch agents and civilians trying to regroup.
Apollo throws his gun and charges for the rocket launching grunt. "EVERYONE GET DOWN!" Apollo shouts as he threw himself forward to tackle the Talon operative.
The grunt pulls the trigger, the rocket begins to fly as the Russian plows him off of his feet. Luckily, the rocket misses the agents near the limo, but it didn't matter. The rocket propelled grenade found itself a new target. His intended target wasn't Reinhardt; it was for the sniper lying down on the cliff. Aaron got himself off the ground, but he didn't have enough time to move, he could only watch in horror as the rocket slams the bottom rock face of the cliff.
In a flash, the top of the cliff collapses, dragging down the sniper along with several boulders through a short, but painful fall. Aaron bounces against the mountain face hard several times before he plops on the ground hard followed by a group of rocks piling up around the sniper.
Everyone in the highway was stunned by the sudden change of events. No one moved.
"NO! God damnit, someone get a medic!" Lawson shouts in frustration.
"Who was that?" Morrison asks Lawson.
"That was our sniper who held off Talon for us to rescue your men. He might be dead."
"Don't give up yet." Morrison signals Reinhardt, Reyes, Tracer, Barnes and Torbjorn dig through the rubble for Aaron. Overwatch's finest medic, Mercy, prepares her medical eqquipment. Suddenly, her eyes catch sight of one of the children, Charles, heading to assist the agents. Mercy quickly stops him.
"You don't need to head over there, Charles." Mercy commands him.
"But I want to help him. He just saved our-"
"I understand, but this is dangerous. The pile could collapse any moment and I don't want you to hurt yourself after what you and your sister have been through tonight."
Charles takes a moment before he nods. "Alright, I understand." He turns around to head to the airship docked nearby.
A minute later, Tracer pulls out the young soldier from the rubble and carries him out to the open grass. Morrison signals Mercy to head over to check on Aaron. After resting her hand on Aaron's neck to get a pulse, she nods to confirm that he is alive.
Lawson pulls Mercy to the side to talk to her privately. "How is he? Is he going to be able to return to base tonight?"
The angel shakes her head. "I need to bring him back to Overwatch HQ. A huge fall like that can put him out for days and he isn't going to feel good once he wakes up." Mercy replies back.
Lawson nods in confirmation before turning to Barnes. "Barnes, I'm going to take the Hummer back with the guys to base. We will swing by tomorrow to see if he is ok. Do you want to take a ride with Overwatch to make sure he gets there safely?"
"Sure." She then looks toward Aaron as Mercy carries him awat without much difficulty. "Oh my god, I thought that was it for Manhattan." Barnes sighs to herself with relief.
Atticus stood there astounded as he witnessed person take a 20-foot fall and lived. "Man, Manhattan being a tough son-"
"Hey, there are children here." Barnes snaps while she gives him a light punch to the shoulder. "Anyway, I will give you guys a call when he is better."
Barnes heads to airship as Mercy follows behind, carrying Aaron's unconscious body inside. The door closes, the airship hovers high above the tall tree line before jettison off for Overwatch HQ.
A/N: If you are wondering why the fishing HE-double hockey stick is this scene so gosh darn familiar, well it was by a request from my favorite author who is writing GhostWatch. For those that don't know, it is Commander_Knight145. If you like the marvel superhero, Ghost rider, and you are on a hunt for the best adaptation (in my opinion) of the character, head to his profile and check it out.
