Chapter 1: Jess

"Jess darling!" Mom calls from downstairs. "Breakfast is ready! You better hurry up, we need to leave soon!"

I roll my eyes at her antics. My mom can be both caring and strict at the same time. I don't know how it's possible but it is. "Coming, Mother!" I yell, tying my wavy black hair up into a ponytail.

The house is warm, the sunlight shining through the curtains covering the windows throughout the house. It's towards the end of summer, fall slowly starting to settle in.

Today I, Jess Preeva, start at a private school. My parents are always wanting the best for me. My family may make a lot of money, but I've never really cared. They are sending me to a school full of kids who are prissy and proper. People like my parents only younger.

If you can't tell, I'm not thrilled to be going. It's not like I'm going to miss anyone from my old school, considering that I don't have friends. It may sound sad to other people, but I'm actually okay. I'm a loner and I like it that way. People in this world don't see things on the same level as I do.

I can see auras.

It may sound strange and insane, but I know that's what it is. I get colored vibes from people and living things that I can see. I don't have all of the colors down, but I have the majority of them.

I walk downstairs wearing my school uniform. It's possibly the most repulsive thing I've ever seen.

The uniform consists of a white polo shirt with a canary yellow tie. That part isn't too bad, but the bottom half is just plain dreadful. It's a canary yellow skirt that's far to short for my liking and canary yellow stockings. The shoes are white flats. This outfit is repulsive.

"Oh, sweetie! You look like a doll!" Mom exclaims, squeezing my cheeks. Her aura is a tan color. It's the color all boring people pretty much have.

I mutter, "Hm, maybe that's what I am to you, a doll that you can dress up in cute outfits." Fortunately my mother does not hear so I can sit down without making too big of a scene.

Dad smiles at me, straightening his suit jacket before kissing my forehead and leaving for work. His aura is the same as my mother's.

He's not going to see me for a couple of months and he doesn't even bother saying goodbye. Best Dad of the Year Award goes to him! Not.

I push the scrambled eggs around on my plate. I hate eggs but clearly my mom forgot that little detail. I take a sip of my milk instead.

Suddenly my plate gets whipped out from in front of me and my cup gets snatched from me as I set it down. "What the-" I get cut off as my mom drags me to the car.

Our house maid, Maggie, shuffles around, putting my bag in the trunk of the car.

I feel my empty stomach, looking at my mother who is putting the keys in the car and starting it up.

She sees my aghast look and says sternly, "You don't need to eat so much, honestly! Are you planning on looking like a pig?"

I roll my eyes. Mom is always like this, one minute she's wanting me to eat more, the next she's going on a tangent about how fat I've become. The worst part is, I'm actually really thin. Talk about dramatic, am I right?!

I put in my earbuds, turning up Welcome to My Life by Simple Plan. What? It's my jam. Totally describes my life.

I grab my bags out of the trunk, taking in the scent of air freshener, Cologne, and perfume all at once. The smell is sickening. I've been here for two seconds and I already hate this place. I am so looking forward to Winter Break.

"So, how do you like it? Doesn't it look so glamorous?" Mom asks, smiling at the sight of the boarding school.

My throat runs dry. My tongue forbids me from lying, but also despises the idea of telling the truth. "It sure is something," I reply, my voice cracking.

She nods. "Well, let's go and get you settled in."

We set off to the principal's office. As we walk, I take in my surroundings.

The floor is white tile and there are no classic red lockers up against the walls. The students must keep their stuff in their rooms. We get dorm rooms and I'm really not thrilled about the idea of sharing my room with someone. The walls are a canary yellow and have windows lined up on them, white lace curtains covering them.

Mom holds the door to the office open for me and I walk in.

"Hello!" A perky woman at the front desk greets, her curly red hair in a low bun at the back of her head. Her name tag says Audrey.

I open my mouth to talk but my mother beats me to it. "My daughter is Jess Preeva, this is her first year. We're dropping by for her schedule and dorm room number."

Audrey nods, looking me up on a computer. "I'll have another student from her year take her on a tour throughout our prestigious school," she explains, smiling. This person had a canary yellow aura, it's the color of the perky people.

Suddenly a girl with blonde hair cropped below her chin enters. She's very pretty and she pulls off the uniform better than I can. And like me, she's not flat-chested. Finally, someone else! Her emerald green eyes spot me and she smiles. "Are you the new girl I'm sharing a dorm with? We're going to have so much fun!" She exclaims, bouncing up and down.

I notice something strange about her aura, it's very different from what she sounds like. I would have never guessed. Her aura is green, it's for people with wisdom beyond their years.

Audrey smiles at her, "This is Jess! Your roommate. Take her on a tour and show her where to go for all of her classes! Help her get settled in."

The girl nods. "My name is Charlotte. But you can call me Char. Let's get started on that tour!" She says, tugging me along by the hand, all of my stuff trailing with me. "Wow! You weigh a ton...oh...you still have your luggage. Let's go drop that off at the room, we'll get settled in later."

I nod and we walk off to the dorms. We enter dorm room #155.
