Jackson
Jackson watched as May prayed for Coraline. Honestly, he was not surprised to find out she was the real deal, from the movie and all. Considering some of the people he had seen May hang out with, Cora was normal.
Him and his friends, plus May, walked down the sidewalk. Everest seemed to be in shock, Katherine was muttering about how she was gonna get Maxlar, Michael appeared to be still going invisible, and May was silently crying as she led the group down the sidewalk. Jackson quicked his pace to catch up with her.
"So May? Do you have an idea of what rose we'll be looking for?" he asked. She sniffled and nodded.
"We're looking for a deep violet rose," she said quietly.
"I'm sorry, a what?" Jackson said, sure that he hadn't heard her right. No rose was naturally a deep violet. May's eyes flashed and then softened again.
"Me a-and C-Cora talked about Wonderland a lot. I'm going to go into detail, but she said once that if someone were to hypothetically go to Wonderland, they would need to find a deep violet rose, and it would show them to a portal." She said, stumbling over her friends name. Jackson nodded as if her understood, which he didn't, and fell back until his step matched Michael's.
Michael. How could he explain Michael? It was impossible. No words could quite capture the curve of his smile, the melody of his laugh, his twinkling eyes that gleamed with mischief, the smoothly tanned skin of his arms. So what if Michael was his best friend and would never like him back? Jackson still loved him and suffered every day because of it.
He let out a small sigh and put his hands in his pockets. Maybe some day, in the far, far off future, he would find the courage to ask Michael out. Until then, he would just keep silent.
May stopped in front of the community gardens.
"Let's look here." she said and went through the gates into the paradise of plants. Jackson held the gate open for everyone and let the latch drop behind him as he stepped inside.
"Whoa..." he breathed. There were patches of flowers on vibrant colors everywhere. The lawns were a bright green and there were trees ranging everywhere from Juniper bushes to Weeping Willows. The marbled paths led to fountains that had sparkling, crystal cold water falling in them and there was a 300 year old oak tree right in the center of it all.
He'd never been inside here, never even had a reason to come near it. May, who had clearly been here before, immediately went off to the rose section. Jackson and the others followed her, not wanting to get lost in the maze of plants.
They found her underneath a bush of red roses, muttering about darkness and soil. Finally, she emerged clutching a purple rose.
Jackson's eyebrows shot up.
"You actually found one?" He said in shock.
May nodded. "I've found 'em before, but they never worked to get me to Wonderland. Prob'ly cause I was human."
She held up the rose. "I wonder how to-oh!" The rose was starting to glow a bright purple. An image shimmered in the petals and everyone leaned in to see it. It was of an old maple tree.
May gasped. "I know that tree!" she shouted and took off running into the back of the garden.
Jackson and the others ran after her, tripping over roots and rocks. May bounded through the trees and plants like a rabbit, pushing off rocks for leverage and clearing tree stumps by mere centimeters.
When they finally caught up with her, she was kneeling in front of the tree with her back to them. Jackson stood for a second, catching his breath, and then walked up to her.
In front of her was a dark hole, with spirals of purple floating down into the depths.
"Whoa..." Everest said. May nodded and stood up.
"Well, only one thing to do." she said, and jumped down the hole.
She disappeared quickly and the four left above looked at each other.
"Well. See you on the other side." Everest said and stepped down into it. Katherine sat on the edge and then leaned forward into it. Michael took a few steps and cannonballed down, while shouting,
"WHEEEEEEEEEEE"
Jackson chucked. Michael could be so childish at times. He took one last glance around the garden and jumped down the rabbit hole.
He passed through a screen of purple and was suddenly floating slowly down a dark tunnel. He glanced around and saw tendrils of purple and sliver roots entwined in the walls. There were old books and jars caught up in deep red, thorny vines that twisted all over. Jackson grabbed one of the books and looked at the cover.
'H.P. Lovecraft's private journal' was embossed on it.
He saw golden leaves and bright blue insects on the vines, and small silver puffs of pollen dusted the leaves.
After what had seemed like a century, a light appeared under his feet. The circle grew from the size of a dime to a manhole cover, and then surrounded him and he fell up onto a green lawn.
Jackson sat up to see the hole shrink and disappear.
"There goes our way home." he muttered.
"We are home," May whispered. "Or, what's left of it."
"Huh-oh whoa..." Jackson looked out to see total devastation. It looked like an earthquake, and tornado, and a hurricane had all ripped through the land.
He stood up and the five Wonderlandians looked down at the rubble of their homeland.
