Chapter 43
•Megara's POV•
I walked down the hallway past all of the posters for the upcoming Christmas dance. I always hated when they started putting posters up before the dances because that usually meant that I—a happy single—would see and hear nothing but cute couples going, and guys asking, and blech for the next two weeks. Wonderful, right?
I'd never really gotten why school dances were such a big deal. It's not like anything really important happens at them. There was no real dancing or mingling. Just a lot of grinding when teachers weren't paying attention and a whole lot of drama.
Or so I'd heard.
I'd been to one school dance in sixth grade, when I didn't have that many friends. I was actually kind of shy when I first started middle school. It was that awkward, puberty phase. Yuck.
Anyways, it was an awful experience. There were way too many bad songs, and when any good ones actually came on, I didn't know how to dance to them. So after that time, I never went to another school dance. I hoped to never have to relive any of it, so I stayed as far away as possible.
I've been doing a pretty good job, if I do say so myself. It's not that hard to avoid when you have no one to go with, anyway. Besides my friends wanting me to go in eighth grade, I didn't have anyone else really pushing me to go. Except for...him. No. Stop. Don't think about...him.
I shook my head, trying to steer my thoughts away from the thing as I put in the combination to my locker.
"Hey, Meg." I groaned, turning to glare at the buff, golden boy who seemed to be obsessed with me now. "What do you need, Hercules? What is it this time?" I didn't mean to sound so snappy, but it just came out that way.
"Are you okay?" He frowned, biting his lip and trying not to further upset me. "I'm fine," I sighed, calming my nerves. "Sorry. What did you need?" I asked, this time calmly.
"I was just going to ask if you wanted to go to the dance with me?"
"No." I grabbed my books and slammed my locker shut, walking away from him. "No?" He quickly caught back up to me. "Why not?"
"Because."
"Because, why?" He demanded, his eyebrows furrowing in frustration. "Because I don't want to go with you. I don't want to go with anyone," I explained, beginning to get frustrated myself.
"Why don't you want to go with me, or anyone?"
"Do you usually ask so many questions, or are you just annoying on purpose?" I huffed, stopping to turn and glare at him. He practically slammed into me from the immediate stop, but my glare never faltered—until I saw the look on his face.
"Meg, just tell me the truth," he said. "Why don't you want to go with me?"
"Because I can't, Hercules. I can't do this again. I can't be vulnerable. I can't expose myself to the world, to you! Why don't you just understand that I want to be left alone? Leave me alone!"
I got wide eyes as I noticed I had been yelling and everyone was looking at us. "Okay," he nodded, his Adam's apple bobbing as he gulped. "If that's how you feel, I understand. I'll leave you alone." His lips pursed in a tight line as he pressed them together before he turned around and walked away.
I watched him go and only then did I realize the tears slipping down my cheeks. I self-consciously wiped them away as I felt everyone's eyes on me and tensed up, running down the hallway and to the bathroom. A few girls looked between each other and one even asked if I was alright, but I just nodded and they left soon after, probably deciding it was better to give me my space at the moment.
I closed myself in the big stall and locked the door, pressing myself into the corner and burying my face into my hands. What have I done?
•Hiro's POV•
I sighed as I sat inside my dorm room. Tadashi was out on a date with Elsa, and since we had no other roommates, and I'd finished all of my homework, I had nothing to do. So far, staring at the wall was the most interesting thing I'd been doing.
"You know what," I muttered under my breath, grabbing my favorite hoodie and slipping it on. "I'm not staying here."
I quickly grabbed some change out of my piggy bank—don't judge. I'm still twelve. I know my rights.—and walked out the door, shutting it behind me. I quickly walked down the hall and found a vending machine I'd become accustomed to using since I'd started at Disney High.
I put in my money and quickly entered in the snack code number I'd memorized. A112. I grinned as a pack of gummy bears was dropped into the bottom section of the machine. Yes.
I pushed back the metal flap and grabbed my delicious treat before turning to go back to my dorm.
"H-Hans."
I furrowed my eyebrows as I heard a strange noise and a slightly muffled voice. What was that? I turned back towards the vending machine, stuffing my gummy bears into my hoodie pocket. Sorry, gummy bears. You'll have to wait.
I stepped towards the sounds slowly and cautiously peeked around the corner to see a girl I recognized as Anna Arendelle, being pinned to the wall by some tall, red-haired guy who was kissing her neck. "Shhhh, Anna," he chuckled against her skin. "Don't be loud, sweetheart. You'll get me in trouble."
She had her eyes closed, but her face was contorted in a mixture of what seemed to be happiness and fear. My eyes got wide as I realized what was going on. What do I do?
I knew it would be stupid to try to pull him away from her. A brawny guy who appeared to be on the football team like him could easily lift and throw me. I needed help. I bit my lip as I turned and ran the other way as quietly as I could to find someone that could help me. I didn't want to get a teacher. That would just be awkward for all of us. If Tadashi was here, I would've gone to him first, but since he wasn't here, there was only one other person I could count on to help me.
I started sprinting through the empty dorm hall until I finally got to their dorm room, knocking loudly.
A startled Jack opened the door and furrowed his dark eyebrows at me."Hiro? Is something wrong? You look upset." I nodded quickly. "I need your help. It's Anna, and there's this guy, and-"
He put his hand up to stop me. "Say no more. I'm coming." He waved goodbye to Aladdin and stepped out, motioning me to lead him to her. We started running down the hallway, him following me. I finally skidded to a stop, him stopping as well, and I pointed around the corner.
We rounded it together and my eyes widened as I saw things had escalated, with the guy's hand already sliding inside Anna's shirt. I gulped as I saw the pure rage that transferred onto Jack's face.
"Get the hell away from her!" He shouted, grabbing the guy by the back of his neck and turning to shove him against the wall. I finally saw the guy had been Hans of the Southern Isles, a real jerk, if you asked me.
"What do you think you're doing with her?" Jack growled with a ferocity I didn't know could be achieved by the human body.
Hans looked just as pissed, but for a completely different reason. "I'm trying to have a moment with my girlfriend. Why don't you stay out of my way instead of getting into other people's business?"
"She's thirteen!" Jack yelled, loud enough to make me cower back. "You don't do that! She's just a kid!"
"We can do whatever we want to do," Hans chuckled. Jack glared at him, the fire in his bright blue eyes burning madly. "Where I'm concerned, you don't lay a finger on her. Do you understand? I oughta beat you up right here in this hallway. You're sick."
Jack finally let go of him, shoving him into the wall one more time before taking his hands away. "I'll see you later, Anna," Hans rolled his eyes, brushing himself off and starting to walk away.
"You don't come near her," Jack ordered. "Ever. Understand? Or I will bury you're perverted, princely corpse ten feet under ground."
Hans cocked his head to the side and crossed his arms, turning to look at Jack. "Is that a threat?"
Jack chuckled. "No. It's a promise." He pointed his staff at him and the Prince was quick to walk away from the scene, probably afraid the Winter Spirit would do what he promised earlier.
I turned to face Anna, biting my lip. "Are you okay?" She nodded, looking a little shaken up. "I-I'm fine."
Jack frowned, walking towards her carefully. "How did that happen?" He wrapped his arm around her comfortingly and she sighed, the realization she was safe finally sinking in. "Well, he offered to walk me back to my dorm after class, and then he started kissing me...And I kissed back, but then I started getting scared because-" she gulped, starting to tear up. "Because that's not the way I want it to happen. Not at thirteen with a guy I barely remember."
She started crying as her bright blue eyes became glossy with tears. "Don't cry," I frowned, stepping forward to comfort her, too. "It's all okay now. He's gone."
I watched as Jack quieted her down, letting her cling to his hoodie jacket as he rubbed her back. I didn't know how he was doing this, but he was amazing at it.
•Jack's POV•
"It's okay, Anna," I whispered. "I'm here now, and no one is going to hurt you. Do you want to come to my dorm and stay a little while?"
She nodded, a small whimper leaving her lips when I tried to pull away. "Do you want me to carry you?" She blushed a little, seeming embarrassed, but nodded anyway. I chuckled a little as I picked her up, a smile forming. She reminded me of my little sister, Emma. My smile turned into a sad one as she clung to me and I hugged back just as tight. Emma. I should call her.
I put my thoughts aside and focused on the problem at hand. "Come on, Hiro," I said. He followed me back down the hall until we got to my dorm and I held Anna with one arm while opening the door.
Aladdin's grin was immediately replaced with a frown as he saw Anna's tear-streaked face. "What happened?"
I shook my head, biting back a growl that had formed in my throat. "Hans." The same prick that had tried to kiss Elsa that time outside. I gently set Anna down on my bunk and Hiro sat next to her, comforting her with his presence. "I'll make you some hot chocolate," I smiled down at the younger Arendelle, trying to cheer her up. It seemed to be working because apparently she loved chocolate, just like her sister.
I got the mix out of my drawer, setting it up correctly in a pan on the small stove Aladdin had snuck into our dorm at the beginning of the year. I nearly dropped everything when I heard a loud bang, whipping my head around to see what the noise was.
I frowned when I saw it was just Hercules. It was probably just his usual accidental strength surge, but oddly, he didn't apologize this time. Instead I was shocked to see a permanent look of sadness on his face as he dropped his bag on the floor, completely not caring, and falling onto the bed.
I looked up at Aladdin and he shrugged, peering down at him from the top bunk. "Herc, you okay?"
He simply shook his head, burying his face into the soft pillow beneath him. "Mind telling me why you're in such a bad mood? What's wrong?"
"Meg hates me. World hates me. Must die." His words came out muffled yet still audible and I had to stifle my laughter, trying not to be rude. "Oh. I see." He huffed into the fluffy pillow and pulled the blankets over his head. Obviously not wanting to be bothered, so I left him alone.
I went back to making the hot chocolate, groaning as Jasmine burst into the room with about five other girls since Hercules forgot to close the door.
"Anna! Are you okay?" I silently cursed as my quiet room filled with the loud chatting of the girls. "Ugh, what happened?" Aurora groaned, sitting next to Anna. "That's what I'd like to know," I said, turning around and crossing my arms. "How did all of you find out so quickly?"
"Ariel told me."
"Well, Cindy told me."
"Because Snow told me."
"Yes, but Belle told me."
"Punzie called me."
"And Aurora told me."
"Yeah, but Jasmine told me."
"Aladdin told me." I turned to look at Aladdin and he shrugged, a guilty smile on his face. "They're her friends. I figured they'd want to know."
I groaned, turning back to the hot chocolate. Somehow my entire dorm room was turned into a season of Dr. Phil, Oprah, and Ellen in just five minutes. And the only one I actually like is Ellen. Wonderful.
Things suddenly got a lot more complicated as Rapunzel came up to me, watching me make the hot drink.
"So how are things with you and Elsa?" I tensed up, biting my lip. "They're good," I lied. The truth was, I wasn't sure she had even a tiny hint that it was me who liked her. "Come on, Jack," she sighed. "I know all about Tadashi."
I glanced at her from the corner of my eyes and then looked down again, suddenly becoming much more interested in stirring the chocolate mix.
"Jack, just tell me what's going on. Have you thought about telling her?" I bit my lip, setting down the cup and turning to glare at her. "Rapunzel, how am I supposed to tell her? I can't just walk up to her and be like, hey, Elsa, I'm hopelessly in love with you. Okay, bye."
My glare softened as I realized everyone was staring at me. Even Hercules raised his head up from his pillow of death and despair to smirk at me. I turned dark red and turned back to the hot chocolate. "Yes! I knew it!" Anna squealed, finally coming out of her scared state from before. "Jack likes Elsa!"
"No, I don't," I lied, pulling my hoodie over my head to hide my red cheeks. "Yes, you do!" She shouted gleefully. "This is perfect! Jack likes Elsa! I was right!" The room filled with loud squeals and cheers that bothered my ears to no end. I almost shouted when I remembered Hiro was here, probably confused.
"You like Elsa?" I bit my lip, turning to Hiro, who'd asked the question. "Okay, who wants me to tell the truth?" I rolled my eyes and huffed as everyone raised their hands, even Hercules lifted his for a second. "Well, Aladdin and Herc already know. And so does Rapunzel, because it's part of the reason we broke up." I looked at her and she sent me a grateful glance for not bringing up Eugene.
"But I guess they all want me to tell you," I sighed. "So fine. I've liked Elsa for a long time. Probably since the first time I met her."
They all squealed, except for Hercules, Hiro, and Aladdin, of course. "So why don't you ask her out?" Aurora asked, frowning slightly. Hiro looked down. "It's because of Tadashi, isn't it?" I nodded. "Why don't you tell her how you feel, at least?" I shook my head. "I can't. I don't want her to turn me down and then things will be awkward. I can't lose her."
"That's so romantic," Cinderella sighed, resting her head on Aurora's shoulder. "I wish a guy liked me that much."
"One day, Cindy," Snow White patted her hand. "One day."
"Ooh!" Ariel grinned. "Idea!" All the girls crowded around her, practically shouting at her to tell them. "Why don't we help Jack? I mean, we're girls. We know what girls like. We can help!"
"Absolutely not," I shut down her idea faster than Simon Cowell can shut down a bad singer on X Factor. "No." They simultaneously frowned, which, I'm not gonna lie, it was kinda creepy. "Why not?"
"Because," I said, shrugging. "I want to tell her at the right time."
"When is the perfect time?" Hercules sat up, rolling his eyes at me. "Once she's fifty and married to Tadashi with two kids and a little house in the suburbs?"
"Hey," I glared at him. "If you're going to be that way, you can go back to shoving your face in that pillow." He huffed at me and crossed his arms. "Well, it's true."
"You know what-"
•Hiro's POV•
As Jack and Hercules argued, I thought about something someone had told me. It was a little distant, but it was something important. Something I wasn't supposed to tell anyone. Ugh. What was it?
Oh! Oh snap. This is good. This is very good. This is very...bad. Oh crap, this is bad.
I gulped as I looked at Jack, finally remembering what it was. I thought back to when I asked Elsa if she liked Tadashi, and I remembered she said she did, but she also liked Jack.
I wanted to tell him so bad, but I had promised Elsa.
I nervously bit my lip, wondering what I should do. Should I betray Elsa and my brother by telling Jack, or should I keep it to myself, keeping my loyalty to my brother and Elsa, betraying Jack? I ultimately decided hurting my brother would haunt me in the long run and made a decision not to tell Jack. At least not right now. Maybe if something happened between my brother and his girlfriend, I would, but for now, I could never ruin his happiness.
I was suddenly snapped out of my thoughts by Jack's voice. "Okay, not to be rude, but can all of you girls except Anna please leave my room. I need to call Elsa-"—the girls giggled—"to tell her what happened with Anna." They all sighed, reluctantly agreeing to leave. I watched them say their goodbyes and give Jack playful looks on the way out.
Well, he's never going to hear the end of it.
•Elsa's POV•
Tadashi had brought me to his lab after our date at the movies. I had to say, for a small room, it was pretty nice, and very orderly. He seemed to like to keep things clean and tidy. Like me. Maybe it was just the older sibling in us both.
"I have something I want to show you," Tadashi said, pulling me off of his couch. "Remember that nurse bot I said I was working on?" I nodded and he smiled. "Well, this is it."
He quickly pulled a white sheet off of something box-shaped. "This is it. I finally built it and I want to show you." He pulled me to a rolling chair and sat down in one next to me. "This might hurt a bit." He grabbed my finger and lightly pressed a thumb tack on it, like a needle. I winced and pulled my hand back, a small, 'ow' leaving my lips.
I gasped as the red box opened up and a white, marshmallow-like robot inflated from it. It walked forward until it towered over me, blinking once. "Hello," it waved its hand. "I am Baymax, your personal healthcare companion. I was alerted to the need of medical attention when you said, 'ow.'"
I giggled as Tadashi stood slightly behind Baymax, mouthing every word he said. "On a scale of one to ten," I looked over a chart that appeared on Baymax with levels of pain. "How would you rate your pain?"
"Hm...I think about a 2," I answered truthfully, mostly because it still stung a little.
"I will scan you. Scan complete." I looked over at Tadashi and bit my lip. "This isn't like one of those scanners at the airport where they can see you naked right?" His eyes got wide. "No! I would never do that!"
"Tadashi," I laughed. "I was just teasing." He sighed in relief and I turned back to Baymax to see what he had to say.
"You have a slight, epidermal abrasion on your left, index finger. I suggest an anti-bacterial spray and a band-aid." I smiled and gave him my hand, watching him apply the spray and put on a band-aid. "Thank you."
"You have been a good girl. Have a lollipop." I grinned, taking the lollipop. "Thank you so much."
"I cannot deactivate until you say you are satisfied with your care." I giggled. "Well, I'm satisfied with my care." I grinned at Tadashi as soon as Baymax had waddled back to his charging station. "You built this?"
He nodded. "Yep. He's programmed with over ten thousand medical procedures."
"Wow," I breathed. "You're so amazing, Tadashi." He laughed. "I'm not anymore amazing than a normal person. I mean, I guess I'm a little amazing, but you're already that way without doing anything."
I blushed as he chuckled, coming over to wrap his arms around me. "So, maybe we could go out to dinner. I know that really nice-"
He was cut off as my phone started ringing. My ringtone was kind of embarrassing, but I didn't care. It was what Jack had programmed into it. I fumbled, trying to find where in the room I'd put it as it went off. "Hey, hey, hey, it's Jack. Answer. Answer me! Answer. Answer me!"
Oh, gosh. This is the part where he starts rapping.
"Pick it up, pick it up, and answer this! It's best friend, so answer this! DJ Frost, out." I blushed as I heard his cute voice go back to normal and say, "Okay, love you."
I finally grabbed my phone off of the table. It had gotten buried under a stack of papers somehow. "Hello?" I finally answered, biting my lip as I saw Tadashi looked the slightest bit upset standing off in the corner, so I went over and leaned back against his chest, smiling when he put his arms around my waist.
"Elsa, where are you?" I smiled as I heard Jack's voice. I made a mental note to spend some quality time with him later. "In Tadashi's lab. We were just about to go see a movie. Why? Is something wrong?"
"Yeah, I have her here with me, but-"
I frowned. "Who's there with you?"
"Anna. She's in my dorm. You have to come over so I can explain everything to you. I don't want to explain over the phone. You're going to want to talk to her about it. Just please, come over."
I bit my lip as I listened to his pleading tone. "Okay," I nodded. "I'll be right there."
I hung up and sighed, leaning my head back against Tadashi's chest. "What's wrong?" I shook my head, closing my eyes. "It's Anna. Something must've happened. I have to go. I wish I didn't have to cut this short, but I have to go. I'm sorry."
"Hey," he turned me around, smiling warmly. "It's your little sister. I understand. I'd do the same thing for Hiro. I'll walk you there. How does that sound?"
I nodded, sighing in relief. "Thanks, Tadashi. That sounds great." We grabbed our bags and laced our fingers together, exiting the lab. Tadashi had shown me pictures of the college he wanted to go to. It was called SFIT, which was short for San Fransokyo Institute of Technology. It seemed very high tech, especially since it was a robotics school, and it was really nice. He's told me it was really hard to get in, but I knew he would get in anyways.
"Hey, Tadashi," I giggled, biting my lip. "Yes?" He raised an eyebrow at me and I giggled again, then pretended to be Baymax. "On a scale of one to ten, how much do you love me?"
"Ten," he laughed. "Definitely a ten."
I smiled as we walked up to the school. I was surprised when I found out Tadashi's lab wasn't too far away, but I was thankful for it now that we had to walk back to campus.
I sighed as we walked inside, heading up to the boys dorms. I hoped Anna was alright. Jack's call hadn't sounded like she was in danger. It just seemed like we needed to talk. I knocked on his door, waving at him when he opened it. "Hey, Elsa." He nodded. "Hamada."
"Hiro?" Tadashi frowned as he stepped in the room, crossing his arms and tapping his foot. "What are you doing here? I thought I told you to stay in our room."
"I'm sorry, Tadashi, I just-"
"It's okay, Hiro," Jack spoke up. "If Hiro hadn't left your room, he wouldn't have been able to tell me what happened to Anna." I frowned, looking at my little sister then back up to Jack. "What happened?"
"Anna?" He looked at her, motioning her to tell me. I guess he wanted me to hear it straight from her.
"I-I was on a date with Hans, and-" I stopped her. "Hans? Why were you on a date with him? I already told you I didn't like him. He's the reason you were almost killed by that car!"
She frowned. "He was?" I nodded. "Yes, and Kristoff saw everything, and he brought you to the hospital after Hans ran away and left you. He left you there after you got hit by a car, and he ran away." My words were laced with so much venom, I was surprised they came from my own mouth. "What did he do?" I demanded.
"I was on a date with Hans, and then he offered to walk me home. So we were in the boys dorms and he pressed me against the wall-" she gulped. "A-and then he started k-kissing me, and then m-my neck. And he started sliding his hand under my shirt." I could see the tears forming in her eyes as she told me the story, and it tore me apart, but I wanted to hear her finish. "And he told me to be quiet so we didn't get caught, and t-then Hiro and Jack came and saved me."
"You did?" Tadashi raised an eyebrow at his brother, along with a proud grin.
"Yeah," Hiro said. "I went to get some gummy bears, and I heard the noises and saw what was going on, so I called Jack. I knew Hans would be able to get away if it was just me, so I knew I needed help." I turned to Jack with a smile. "You saved my sister?"
He waved it off. "It's not a big deal, Elsa. It was nothing, really." Hiro gawked at him. "Nothing? Elsa, you should've seen how angry he was." His grin lit up as he told the story and all about how Jack almost beat up Hans. "He was scary. He grabbed him and pushed him against the wall, and he got all in his face. It was awesome!"
Jack laughed, rolling his eyes and ruffling Hiro's hair. "You make it sound like I'm some big super hero." I smiled. "You're my super hero." I gave him a hug, wanting to cry in his comforting arms. I couldn't believe my sister, only at thirteen, had to go through that. And it was all thanks to that jerk Hans. The more I thought about it, I started to realize that if Hiro and Jack hadn't been there, something really bad could've happened. "Thank you," I whispered.
When I finally pulled away, I pulled Anna up for a hug. She buried her face into my neck and I could hear the little hiccuping sounds of crying coming from her. I gently patted her back, biting my lip to keep in my own tears. I had to be strong for Anna. No matter what the circumstance. She'd gone through way too much for a girl just barely a teenager.
I'll protect you Anna, I thought. And I will always love you.
