Chapter 14
Avalynn Johnson

We immediately dashed out of the conference room and saw black, murky smoke coming from the hallway.  What the hell happened here?

I followed them to see red, scorching fire spread over to the kitchen.

"We need to get these people out of here and put the fire out as well." I shouted, looking frantic. Who wouldn't be at a time like this, right?

All I thought about is how the pack should not be hurt! Anything but our people! We must find a tactic to solve everything right now.

"On it. I'll go help the people out of here while you help put out the fire. Okay?" My brother told me. That was fine by me. My brother was a fast sprinter. No doubt I can count on him to get the folks out of the house in a jiffy.

I know that fire may sound like a minor thing to some and that it isn't taken seriously in contrast with other problems but like the effect it does to humans, it is also very damaging to us werewolves. Fire releases gases that are truly harmful from the body that I know can kill sometimes.

What's worse is that our noses are sensitive and can probably pick up scents from a mile away!

Think fast, Avalynn!

"Alright. Now go!" I yelled as I ran out of the household with werewolf speed, to grab the hose from the backyard. The hose was long enough to travel the whole pack house. Indeed, I am not even joking here.

I went back inside again, seeing as the black smoke was spreading like wild fire in the kitchen. My snout feels like it is burning. I coughed and promptly covered my nose. It was sensitive due to the diffusion of black smoke.

Yes, it was very difficult to breathe in here but I had to be tough for the safety of my pack and its members.

I neared the flames, and sprayed everything in kitchen with the powerful water hose.

As the water spreads out and is distributed to the burning galley, the sweltering fire seems to weaken rapidly. I was glad that there was a lot of liquid from the tube and the foggy smoke seemed to disperse; however, what Aiden said made my heart stop.

Calling out, he cried, "Avalynn! Avalynn! The forest is on fire!"

As soon as he said those words, my head whipped to his side. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was hard enough to stop a house fire, much less a forest fire!

"What?" I exclaimed. It can't be!

"Where are the kids?" I asked him hysterically.

"They're out already and they are protected but they don't have much security now for the fire is scattering rapidly."

There's no escape. Even if the people are out, the forest was on fire! I fear that the kids might not make it. Some has not shifted yet, so how are they going to protect themselves if they don't have a wolf? They are practically humans at the moment! I immediately went outdoors holding the hose. I noticed that the fire was surrounding our pack house like a hell and its flame.

Everyone was witnessing the huge circle of burning inferno that we can't get out nor get rid of.

Then I've noticed something. It was strange how the trees were on fire yet they weren't falling or breaking down from the flames. Shouldn't fire be destroying them by now? How come the trees are still intact? In fact, the trees look healthy despite the fire surrounding them.

I knew a lot about these fires because it always happens to some parts in San Diego every time I visit my aunt and uncle from a different pack.

I observed as the pack warriors had tried to put out the flames with the use of the other garden hose or water tubes. I also joined in as well and had scattered water to the fire using the powerful water conveying tube. But in reality, nothing was working as I perceived. There must be something inside the furious flames than a few chemicals to cause this ignition of heat.

"The fire isn't burning out!" I called out to the men.

The pack fighters nodded looking more confused than ever. They tried focusing again and used more water and power to stop this catastrophe.

If I am right with my suspicions, then nobody, not even the most powerful Alpha, can stop the fire with water. Nobody no matter how hard they tried. Who can I go to?

Nolan!

I need to see Nolan now for he is the only one that can help me confirm my suspicions!

"Take care of the people and our parents, Aiden." I gave him the hose. He nodded and grabbed the hose from my hands.

"Stay safe." I said before looking for Nolan. He's the only one who can help me right now.

"Nolan? Nolan! Where are you?" I exclaimed. He was nowhere to be found and it was problematic to find him since everyone was running around, shouting, and screaming. Everything was in chaos and the people were distraught, hysterical, and upset!

I am desperate right now. Nolan is the only one that can help me confirm my fears and doubts.

I closed my eyes and let my wolf take control of my body. She knew his scent perfectly and I knew she could feel him. Plus, letting her take control heightens my sense of smell, but dreadfully it was terrible since I was breathing carbon dioxide and ammonia too much.

My thoughts were gone when she lead me to the front of the pack house. His scent leads me somewhere inside. How odd. Where is he and why is he inside the damned pack house? I just closed my eyes and let my wolf concentrate and lead me to him.

When I opened my eyes, he was in front of me.

"Nolan!" I clutched his arms. I knew I could trust my inner wolf to lead me to him.

"What? Can't you see that I am busy right now?" He shouted trying to help a pack member stand.

"You have to call Rohan, Nolan. You have to! He might be the only one to stop the forest fire."

Like I said I was frantic today. We needed Rohan right of now, at this very moment!

"What? Why? Just put it out with water!" He bellowed at me.

I sighed for he just does not get it. Not even water can put out that large amount of flames.

"Can't you see? I have tried! Our packs have tried! But nothing is working out so far!"

"Give me a reason why I should call him. We can't just bother him from a simple wildfire spreading around our packs."

"Yeah, a simple wildfire that can kill both of our packs." I sneered. But lowering my pride, I spoke with emotion, "I think it's made from black magic!" I cried.

He must understand that I am doing this for both our packs; the Black Stealth and the Silver Hill pack.

"Go fucking call him." I demanded. "Please."

I don't care anymore who he is right now, I don't care if I'm being rude, demanding, or if I am begging. I just needed to contact that one person who might have the answers to our problems.

H sighs despondently and that scared me.

"I cannot do so. I do not have my phone with me today." He sighed, frustrated.

Damn it, I feel so fucking lucky right now. Note the sarcasm.

Where is an enchanter or a sorcerer when you need one? I just hope that I don't hop on my deathbed today.

Suddenly, something behind me caught Nolan's attention, judging by the way his eyes enlarged.

"Did somebody ask for my help?"

I turned around to see a smirking Rohan.

"Rohan! Where did you come from?" I was stunned. Seriously, where did he? Does he live near us or something? He opened his mouth to speak but I cut him off.

"Never mind, you owe me that explanation, but the real question is, how do you know that we needed you over here? You can't just pop over here out of the blue..." I trailed off curiously. It's impossible for him to unexpectedly show up in here in time of need.

"I didn't know you needed me over here. I just hinted a few specks of black magic –you know we are against them– so I followed it all the way here." He replied to me.

"Besides, with dark, mystic charms, I can sense danger from a mile away- unconsciously leading me to your packs."

"Oh my gracious goddess! It's a good thing you're here. You're the only one I can think of to help us put out the forest fire. Please aid us! I think the fire was indeed created with the assistance of dark enchantments or black magic." I informed him.

He knew what I was talking about and nodded.

With that said, both of us ran to the backyard, observing and watching the forest in the burning flames of dark magic. Then, as his reaction, his eyes seem to widen as he witnessed what he saw.

Yet, the combatants were still trying to put out the giant fire. Why is it taking so long to put out a fire? Well, actually forest fire but oh well.

All I can say neither was neither water nor shouting was working effectively. Some people looked forlorn and disheartened. My heart ached for the people so did my wolf. They shouldn't give up! Not just yet!

I observed as Rohan starts to close his eyes and starts to chant a few words that I have never heard of before. His hands started to glow a mighty, bright blue hue and he released his arms, flinging it off to the side, letting go not only of the spell but his magic energy as well. So what's supposed to happen now? Did it work?

Hell yes, it did!

Suddenly, rain poured from the cold blue sky and the fire causing trepidation had weakened in stability until it was completely gone.

"Rohan!" I shouted and sprinted to embrace him. He hugged me back as well. I realized that I was being cheesy nut but I did not matter for I was indebted to him. I am forever grateful for the fact that he saved both packs. He saved our lives and for that, we are incredibly thankful.

I acknowledged him so much because if he wasn't here, I would never know what to do. We all could have perished from the never ending flames of evil.

Behind Rohan, I saw Nolan come out of the pack house with the rest of the people. He was glaring at Rohan and I. What did I do wrong now? Shouldn't he be happy that the fire wasfinally put out? How come he still looks like he's in a bad mood? Like he wnted to strangle me or Rohan.

Whatever. I didn't care at all. I just wanted to be in Rohan's friendly arms at the moment. I needed comfort and assurance of a friend since I won't get it from my ex-mate. I took a deep breath first before I let go of him.

Then we went back inside the pack house. I gasped.

The fire was out yet the kitchen looked totally wrecked.

I'm thankful that it didn't spread that much since it didn't make it to the second floor or the third. I remember that a few minutes ago, I was here and I had one mission to do; and that was to immediately put out the fire in the kitchen, while my brother and the other pack warriors get the folks to safety.

Right now, I was just here looking at the burnt counters and cabinets. I observed as the black smoke slowly evaporates to thin air.

"Avalynn! Avalynn!"

I spun around and suddenly tackled by my parents. I couldn't control my happiness too as I knew they were safe.

"Mother! Father! Thank the moon goddess that both of you are safe!" I said hugging them tightly.

"Oh my gosh, honey! We were so worried about you!" My mother gushed, inspecting any wounds on my face.

I grasped her hands, saying, "Mother, stop it! I am fine! You are treating me like a baby in front of our packs!" I half whispered, half yelled to her.

"But honey, I have the right to be worried! You are my only daughter! You shouldn't face circumstances like that!"

"I know, mother, but I am fine. I swear to the moon goddess I am!" I reassured her.

"You were brave putting out that fire, my dear, and so did your brother." My father smiled at me. It felt good that my parents were proud of me. I shouldn't get all the praise and credit because it wasn't only me who fought and helped people! It was my and Nolan's pack warriors, some of the members of our pack, and our warlock friend, Rohan.

"Yes, thank you, father. But I couldn't have done it without the help of my friend, Rohan, here. He is the one that basically saved us all!" I introduced Rohan to my father and he smiled whilst shaking his hand in a firm grip.

"Thank you Rohan for saving us. It means a lot of both of our packs!"

"No problem, Alpha Johnson. I'm only glad to help." He spoke in a friendly way, smiling at my direction.

My father must have mistaken his action as something because he asked, "Are you perhaps my daughter's mate?"

And hell, I didn't expect that.

Rohan and I never did anything remotely romantic nor intimate because I barely know that man. But right now, I am considering him as friend and not something more than that.

Rohan looked at me unusually, whilst I shrugged as if I don't care. I knew he knew that Alpha Nolan was my mate. After all, he was the one Nolan asked to break our bond.

"I'm sorry to disappoint, Alpha. But I'm not her mate."

My father then looked disappointed but nodded. Does he want me to find my mate and leave the pack early? I will not allow that until I find my second chance mate or something.

"Oh, I apologize for making assumptions. I just saw you together in an embrace a while ago." He smiled sheepishly, pointing at my direction, whilst I blushed.

I don't like Rohan! I was just happy and relieved that we managed to make the fire stop, that's why I hugged him.

Rohan then turned to Nolan who was approaching this way. As usual, he gave me a glare, looking really mad about something, and his lips were set in a grim line. I don't even know what I did to make him look infuriated. It did not affect me like it once did before. I was getting used to his prissy attitude.

"Nolan! There you are! Avalynn was utterly right. The fire was coated with black magic!" Rohan called out to Nolan.

I turned to Gamma Pearson, who stood near me. "I told you so."

He didn't say anything and just rolled his eyes at my words, while I, doing a little victory dance, smirked. It feels good to be right and instruct the ignorant.

"Thank you, my friend." Nolan said as he put a hand on Rohan's shoulder. Wow, Nolan acted nice for a second. I feel like he was only angry at me and no one else.

"Yeah it's totally fine, man." Rohan patted Nolan's back.

Rohan approached and looked at me in the eye. "One of the factors that lead me here was your fear."

My fear? Oh, I kept on forgetting that he can smell fear from a mile away.

"Just summon me in case you need any help okay?" I was about to agree and speak until Nolan cut in and never let me spoke my words.

"No worries. I'll do it, brother." Nolan said.

Rohan nodded his head and gave my shoulder a squeeze.

"I have to go but I'll first cast some incantations to protect your territory. It might not mean much but It does have its benefits." He informed.

"Thank you again. I really can't you thank enough." I grinned at him kindly.

Rohan just nodded and walked away to perform incantations.

Like in a slow motion, I gazed at my pack as they were healing themselves. We were all afraid, distraught, and confused like pandemonium meets hell.

But we still continue to exist because the fire within us burned much brighter than the blazing fire that bounded us.

We are born survivors.
