First Dragon
Mitch caved seeing as I wouldn't back down. He made sure I remembered all of my training and that I knew how to kill it swiftly. Once I reassured him I knew what to do, he helped me gear up to join the other 3 on the dragon.
I hooked myself onto the metal wire to the harpoon stuck in the dragon's side and slid across. Confused the other three hurried over to help me get on its back.
"So it's you Zion? I don't understand why you're here. We can handle this one easily enough. It's not really an easy dragon for an amateur, no offense," Jordan said.
"I know you can and I know I can't do it alone, but I have to do this. I'll explain it to you later, right now we need to end this, before it takes out the ship with its thrashing," I said as we had to keep our footing and hold on. We should put the thing out of its misery at least. It's in pain and trying to get free and yet there was still hatred and defiance in its eyes as it turned its head towards us.
"Okay, did you come with a plan or do you just have a death wish? I mean it's moving around so much we haven't been able to hit any of its weak spots. our arrows and spears just bounce off it's scales," Jordan said.
"Mitch didn't give me a plan and I was hoping you guys had one," I replied and looked between the three of them.
"Show us what supplies you have with you maybe we can figure something out once we have stock of our weapons," Valis said, basically telling me they didn't have a plan yet.
"We really don't have the time for that, Valis, the wind is picking up and the dragon isn't going to just sit still while we do all of that," Jordan said and I had to agree. With me on it's back it's only a matter of time before it trys something else. It wants me dead and isn't afraid to kill any of the others in doing so. There's no time to plan or argue right now.
"Listen take the arrows I brought, try to aim for it's eyes, maybe we can lower it's accuracy on it's attacks. Then they should have an opening to fire the second Harpoon to lock it in place better. Once it's anchored down better we'll have a better chance to deliver a final blow," I said cutting to the chase.
"Or blinding it could make it thrash around more. That could have the opposite effect," Jordan argued.
"I think it might work. We should at least try, none of us have any better ideas," Mira said giving my plan the benefit of the doubt. Valis agreed too, so on majority rule we decided to go with my plan. My main reason for blinding it though isn't just to slow it down, but if it can't see me it might calm down a little. Not knowing if it's attacking me or someone else might make it slow down and think a little more before attacking. Though knowing it's going to die anyway it might not even care who it's attacking, not to mention it'll still have it's hearing and sense of smell.
"If we do this we'd better end it quickly. It attacked us, but I don't want to make it suffer anymore than it has too," Mira said. At least we all agreed on that.
"Okay, I'll head back to the ship and let them know the plan. You three had better make this work," Jordan said and took off before we could even respond. Once he was gone I turned to Valis and Mira and sighed.
"I'll draw it's attention and create an opening for you both to line up shots. Make them count because once it realizes what we are doing it definitely won't make it easy for us," I said. When they tried to argue with me about why it had to be me - when they were both more experienced - I had to tell them the truth. The dragon is after me so I had the best chance of getting it's attention.
Both of them looked at each other and nodded at me once they decided to help me do this. They took up positions on either side of the dragon in order to take their shots whenever they get an opening. I made my way towards the dragon's shoulders to get his attention.
"Okay, Sky Dragon, you wanted me to get involved so here I am," I said loud over the wind. The dragon turned its head towards me and let out a growl.
"How dare you ride on my back without my permission. I won't ever accept you as our Prince. You don't even know how to properly use that power, it should have never been left with a child like you," it said. What he said made it sound like I was given these powers by someone else, that I wasn't born with them. Was it my mom or perhaps the dragon I saw die as a kid? Unfortunately I don't think he's willing to answer my questions and I can't afford to get distracted now either.
Mira took her shot in that moment and actually managed to hit her target. Valis just has to find his opening now. The dragon roared in pain and did the only maneuver it could with the Harpoon limiting his options. He flew up, upside down, and around in a loop.
All three of us fell off while he was upside down, but as he looped back around I managed to deploy my survival rope and climb back on. Mira managed to climb back on as well, but Valis wasn't so lucky. He did manage to activate his flight suit and made it back to the ship.
"Since I was able to blind it on the ship side, maybe they can launch the second Harpoon now before it tries to throw us off again," Mira suggested. I nodded and as she was relaying the message to the ship I took the opportunity to at least try to talk to the dragon.
I explained to him again that I never asked for this power and I've had no one who could explain it to me. I even told him that whenever I ask any of the other dragons about it the dismiss me with "You have to figure it out on your own" or an "I can't tell you". With that information I then told him I was sorry if I didn't exactly meet all of his expectations because I'm doing this all on my own with no idea what it even is that I am doing.
"All I'm hearing is excuses. Oh poor little human can't do anything on his own. You've had this power all your life, you should know what to do by now, so don't give me that "I'm all alone" speach," He replied.
"I didn't even know that I had this power until about a year and a half ago. I had never been around any dragons until then, so no I haven't exactly had as much time as you think to figure any of this out. Which is why I'm asking so many questions. I literally have no idea why you are so mad at me or why I can't get anyone to tell me anything. I'm sorry if that sounds like whining or excuses, but it is the truth," I said.
While it was distracted and looking at me the ship launched both the Harpoon and arrows at the dragon. Both were direct hits and the dragon roared in anger and pain.
"If that is all true, Kid, then it means your Guardian Dragon is either dead or being held captive somehow. The reason none of the other Dragons would tell you anything is because in our culture only a Whisperer's Guardian Dragon can offer said person direction and answers, it's something you humans call a Law. Now I've said all I can. I know you can't let me go after all I did to your friends, so please end this," he said almost sounding calmer.
I took no real joy in doing this, not after finally getting him to calm down and listen. I knew I shouldn't let him suffer, though, so I grabbed one of the spears and rope. I repelled down to where his weak spot was. I gently ran my hand over his scales and apologized before stabbing the spear down into his heart.
