In Between

I wasn't sure what to say to the guy. Revealing I was part of a Dragonier group, can talk to dragons, and that I was looking for my father who disappeared years ago didn't seem like a good idea. I'll just stick to the basics and not reveal too much. They could try to sell me if they found out I had a rare talent like that and if they find out I was a Dragonier - even partially - they might not want me with them.

"I'm looking for my Father who went missing over three years ago. The Inn Keeper said he saw him and that the group he was with headed for Darensville, it's the only lead I've had since I started my search," I said.

"So your throwing yourself into the lions den and going to stir up the pack. That's pretty wreckless of you, most ordinary kids would be scared shitless by even thinking about going to Darensville," Tyson said. He was prying and I knew it.

"I would be lying if I said I didn't want to have to go near Darensville, but after months of traveling and searching this is my only lead," I said.

"I hate to be the one to point this out kid, but if he went to Darensville it's possible that he is dead, enslaved, or a crook himself. People just don't "pass through" Darensville without consequence. You should be prepared for the worst," Wallace said actually chipping into the conversation.

"Dead or alive I need to know what happened to him. When someone disappears without warning you're left with a lot of unanswered questions and want answers. Did he just abandon me to live a new life, is he dead, or perhaps something happened to him that is preventing his return? I can't move on without knowing the answer anymore," I said.

"I see, we'll have you meet with a friend of ours when we get there. He's a skilled information broker, but it won't be cheap. Still he might know where to start," Tyson said and Wallace looked surprised at what he said. Well I don't have much on me but it's still a place to start.

"That would be great help, thanks," I said and he waved me off. Tyson told me not to thank him yet and that the man was a bit eccentric. He might not even agree to do it. That's understandable, but still he's willing to help me out and that deserves my thanks.

"Well it's still nice of you to try, so I still say thank you anyway," I said, but he still waved it off and we continued walking in silence.

It took three days to get to Darensville, but we finally made the long trip. Once in town I stuck close to Tyson and Wallace. There were men arm wrestling and drinking at a tavern near the entrance. A little further away two people were sword fighting in the street. This definitely lives up to it's reputation for being a lawless, sketchy town. Every one of them stopped to look at us as we passed and I could feel their eyes on me the most. I'm an outsider and I probably look pretty weak compared to anyone who steps foot in this place, making me a great target for whatever devilish plans they're thinking up.

To my surprise Wallace shot them all a glare and they all instantly went back to what they were doing. It was like the air around him changed for a moment. Impressive, I don't think I could have made them back down like that if I tried.

"You're too soft, Kid. You should show your strength to men like that. The more they fear your strength the more they'll back off. Still, You don't have much strength in fighting, but I'm sure you're strength lies somewhere else. The sooner you figure that out the better. Or you won't survive long in this town," Wallace said quietly as we walked. The problem is my strength will also make me more of a target. Not that I could tell them that.

"So what brought you guys to this town? I mean you don't seem like the type to visit a place like this often," I asked them as we continued walking.

"We come here every 6 months to watch the underground fights. It lasts for five days and the winner gets the chance to go tow to tow with a Dragon. Dragon Hunters catch the dragons for these events, but no one has been able to bring this dragon down in about 2 years. If you're interested you could come along with us tomorrow," Tyson said.

"I don't think watching people kill each other is really my thing," I said. That's true, but I also don't want to watch them torment a dragon in front of me. Plus if I get near it they might find out about me, as would everyone else here. Safer to stay away.

"Well, it's already the end of day 2, so we can't miss the next 3 days. I'll introduce you to our friend in the morning and then I guess we'll go our separate ways. Just don't get yourself killed, Kid," Wallace said. I sighed and closed my eyes. I can't tell if he was messing with me or not. It's almost like he didn't want me to leave and is actually worried about me. But, the way he said it was so matter of fact it was hard to tell.

"Fine, I guess I'll stick with you guys while I'm here. Besides, I'm betting at a competition like that they probably send slaves in to entertain themselves and it's possible someone there might know something about my Father," I said.

They didn't argue with me or say anything else on the matter. It was killing me, not knowing what they were thinking. Was I right about the slaves and it upset them? Do they not really want me to go with them? Or do they just not have anything else to say about it? Three days with them and I still can't get a read on these guys.
