Chapter 1- Wildfire

"Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid, it is man-made and can be removed by the actions of human beings." ~Nelson Mandela.

Time never stops, and life doesn't wait. If you feel that something is wrong, change it. The ticking of the clock was vanquishing my ears, I could hear the seconds as I connected my lashes together. I had a rough day, and all I wanted was to sleep peacefully and not think. In what felt like hours I surrendered to my body in peace, voices were playing in my head, a smell burnt my nose. Am I dreaming? What is going on?

Forcefully, I woke myself up and what I saw agitated me. Smoke encircled me, and fire was widely distributed through the small poor apartment that my family and I owned. My light grey eyes reflected the fire as I tried to find a way out. I tread on my old white wooden bed as I located a safe haven. All the memories that I had were turning to ashes right in front of me.

I jumped off the bed as I ran from the fire that was chasing me. It wasn't the fear of death that made me run faster, it was rather the fear of losing the people that made hell, heaven. I ran as quick as I could towards the door. I pushed the door with my full potential as it hit the ground. I made my way to my dearest living place in this apartment which is the living room. It was a small old classical living room filled with pictures and sweet memories of my family and I.

"Anna? Mom? Dad?" I shouted as I looked for my younger sister. The howling wind was the only thing in the apartment that responded. I ran to my sister's room, I pushed the door as I called her. The door kissed the ashes on the floor as I made my way through the smoke. My eyes were moving back and forth as if it's a clock's pendulum.

"Anna?" I shouted yet again as I walked past the door. The room was deserted, the grey walls stared at me as I walked out of the room sorely. The fire was swelling as it encircled me, I ran quickly out of the room as I detected a door that can liberate me from this wildfire. I hastened to the door, but the fire contacted it before me. I had no chance of escaping, I looked around me, and the moonlight that visited the room through the window guided me to my escape. It was the window. I have to jump off the window, that's the only chance for me to live, but I can't leave without my family.

I sprinted back to the living room looking for them. "Mom? Dad? Are you there?" I shouted yet again as I ran back and forth in the dead heart of the apartment. No one was there, it was just me and the fire. The smoke was getting to my lungs, I need to get out of here before I lose my conscious. I ran towards the window, kicked it, and jumped. My body hit the ground and destroyed my senses. I tried to stand up, but it was hard. My eyes were hazy, I was seeing blurry illusions. My head was running around, I heard unclear voices. It took seconds for me to lose all my senses and consciousness. I fell on the cold hydrated green grass that was right behind our apartment, and that was the last thing that my memory said to me.

All I know is that my body was in a state of comfort, the pain in my back vanished, the thoughts that followed me were leaving. Where did Anna go? Did they all make it out of the fire? What happened to them? Are they okay? I opened my eyes gradually, the alluring view that was on top caught my eye first. The transparent circled glass ceiling welcomed me. The sun peaked through verdure that was enclosing it. The greenery was conquering the transparent ceiling. The relaxing whistling of the birds conciliated me. I was astonished by what I saw that I completely forgot to ask where I was. I lifted myself up the soft bed and looked around me.

The room surprised me even more, it was filled with mirrors. My tanned skin was welcoming me to the room, my light grey eyes were gazing kindly, my long straight roman nose was inhaling the freshest air it could ever get, my bright pink lips were connected with a smile, I survived. I could've died, but what about Anna? Mom? Dad? What happened to them? It was a huge luxurious white room and my thoughts were all over it. The room looks like one of those rooms that we always used to see on television, and dream about one day getting the money to afford them.

The luxurious room distracted my thoughts. I need to focus, where am I? My foot touched the ice-cold ground, as I walked towards the metallic door that was in the centre of the room. Before I touched the golden door knob, it opened. As it opened many thoughts came to my mind. Who might be the person behind that metallic door? Why am I here in the first place? Who saved my life? It is only seconds and an answer to all my questions will be revealed.
