chapter eight

Oscar recovered after two very uncertain days and the group had moved on, but Jet had barely kept his eyes off the boy.

Oscar walked in front with Saturn, the two laughing and joking with one another, Jet walked with Layla, who was glowering the same as he was.

"My mum told me to kill him." She mused catching Jet off guard. He stared at her. "When this all started, when she was still alive, she told me to kill him, so he wouldn't grow up in this world. I couldn't."

"And your mother never tried?" Jet asked. Layla shook her head.

"She couldn't do it, couldn't kill her baby. Wanted me to do it. I should have, and I've thought about it every day. This is the first time I've heard him laugh." The girl sighed. "He thinks I hate him, i just don't want him to get bit and then I will have to kill him."

"Layla, why do you hurt him?" Jet asked, she sighed.

"Because he's stupid. Because he wants to help people, and he's willing to risk his life for others. Because I don't want to see him end up like mum." She replied, tears in her eyes. "Because he's my little brother."

"Layla he's terrified of you." Jet told her, she sighed.

"I know, but at least he's safe, at least he's alive." She responded, Jet was surprised at this side of her. Surprised that she had a heart. That she was so emotional.

"That's true." He agreed, he had to agree, but he couldn't help but wonder what would have happened if she had killed the boy.

Up ahead, Saturn and Oscar had met a dead one, they where backing one another up, Saturn distracting it, giving Oscar a chance to stab it in the head from behind. Jet had never seen Saturn work so well with someone before, and looking back at Layla, she too had a look of slight jealousy same as he, which told him Oscar had never worked as well with anyone before either.

"Are you hurt?" Saturn asked the boy, he shook his head.

"Are you?"

"I'm fine." She passed him a cloth so he could clean his knife and then she unexpectedly hugged him. "Good job."

"I'm fifteen not five." He pointed out, she pulled a face at him.

"You still did a good job." She poked her tongue out at him, he returned the gesture and then they glanced at Layla and Jet, who had reached them.

"You should have waited for us." Layla scolded at once, Oscar hung his head as though waiting for her to hit him.

"Hey, if we'd waited for you one of us could have been bit." Saturn pointed out, slipping her hand into Oscars. "Come on, we still need to find some sort of shelter."

She dragged Oscar ahead, Jet giving Layla a disapproving look, she glared at him. "I can't help it!"

He rolled his eyes and the continued on, following the red-haired vampire and the dark-haired boy down the street.

Jet remembered when he had first seen one, one of the weird things that had once been human and now had them running scared. It had been late at night, he had been walking home from a clan meeting and seen one stumbling along, walking into lampposts and growling when it saw him, but one swift movement from Jet and he had pulled it's head from it's shoulders and thrown both into the shadows of whatever building he was passing and carried on. It had repulsed him, repulsed him so much he had disposed of it without a second thought. He hadn't thought that he would see another and now the world was full of them.

It was a pitiful way to live. He thought about what Layla had said, about their mother wanting Oscar dead so he wouldn't grow up in this world.

Jet was beginning to wonder if she was right. Was it fair for the boy to spend his young life running, being scared?

Oscar and Saturn had disappeared into what was left of an American style diner. It was deserted, but the doors could be locked and they could be safe. Oscar was sat on the counter, his knife still in his hand, he was laughing at Saturn, presumably something she had said.

"This is cosy." He commented, she punched his arm lightly with a laugh and pulled herself up beside him.

"It'll do." She replied. "Although o haven't checked down stairs."

"If there's a lot down there and we disturb them, we're done for." He warned, "but then again if we leave it and they hear a noise in the middle of the night and they come up here. We're done for."

"Your optimism astounds me." She said, jumping down and taking a knife from the kitchen. "Come on you lot, let's go see if there's a threat."

"Are you sure?" Layla asked, "I mean maybe we should go somewhere we know is safe."

"This is secure, and it might be nothing." Jet said, he was tired of walking aimlessly around, he wanted them to settle down for the night so he could get them to figure out somewhere to go. He didn't care where.

"Ready?" Saturn asked them, the three nodded and she banged on the wall, shouting loudly. "Oy!"

Three growls sounded, coming closer and closer, a fourth one sounded, it was fainter, possibly stuck. "Everyone take a step back, they're moving fast." Layla warned, and then the three came flying up the stairs, lunging for Saturn, Oscar pulled two a way from her, kicking one down the stairs, the other one almost pushing him over, he pushed it away trying to get into a good position to push his knife into it's skull.

Jet pushed his knife into the undead that was attacking Saturn and turned his attention to Oscar, but he had already disposed of it. The third was already coming back up the stairs, but Layla was prepared, she met it with her knife, spearing it's eye on her knife.

"Let's go and get number four." Saturn said, hopping down the stairs, Oscar followed her at once. Layla watched them with a frown, before exchanging a sigh with Jet and following them.

Number four, as it appeared, was suck under an upturned table what looked like a good number of trays. Saturn put it down at once.

"I think  they've been there since the beginning. Or at least this one has." Layla said, she looked sick.

"Come on, I'm hungry." Oscar suggested, giving them the nudge they needed to go upstairs.

"Yeah, yeah let's go." Jet nodded as they reached the upstairs.

It was as Layla warmed a can of beans for them that Jet brought up his thoughts.

"We need somewhere to go to." He told them. "We can't just keep going nowhere."

"You're right, but where exactly can we go?" Oscar asked, rubbing his eyes. He was tired, but was forcing himself to stay awake.

"Maybe we find somewhere, get out of the city. Find some walls, make a home. It could work." Jet said enthusiastically.

"Okay, tomorrow we'll find somewhere, tomorrow we'll start our search for somewhere." Layla decided for the group, and they were all okay with that.
