Chapter two

-Z A C K-

As the hours went by during the bright and busy day, it was already dark outside and night consumed the sky with darkness.

"Still around?" I heard a voice say and instinctively, I raise my head up to the source.

"Yeah, I'll be heading out in a few." I reply, smiling up at Claire.

"Mmmmh, okay. Don't forget to lock up." She answers, tossing me my keys and walking out the front door.

Half an hour later, I locked up and left the station. Being mentally and physically exhausted, all I wanted to do was take a nice long nap. Arriving at my house not long after twenty minutes before, I pulled out my keys and opened the door.

I felt a light buzzing in the back pocket of my jeans and took out phone, answering it immediately.

--Hey man, you home yet?--

--Yeah, what is it?--

--So you got the job and never bothered to let me know bout' it yeah?--

--Look, I would've told you sooner, but right now I feel like shit--

--Bull! Meet me and the guys by the bar, we need to celebrate with alcohol and get laid! Since when did you last shag a chick man?--

--Alright Greg, whatever you insist, I'll be there in a few--

Without giving him a chance to respond, I hang up, letting out a frustrated groan but headed out to dress. No matter how many times I tell Greg I wasn't keen on getting with any girl, it never seemed to sink in, or at least that what I believed. Sharing feelings with someone isn't something I wanted or desired, rather falling in love itself.

Greggory is a close friend of mine, we met in uni, and he was my roommate.

"So, did you go on any duties today?" Luca, my other close friend asked.

"Yeah, but only one. It was that youth gang again, they were taking part in extortion." I answered simply.

"The Devils Toxics?!" Matt yells, causing the few people near us to glance our way.

"For people between the ages' of 20-26 those guys are really dangerous, no one knows how they look because they always wear those really cool face masks!" Greg says, causing me to roll my eyes. He was already stating the obvious, though my mind drifted off to his words a little.

No one knows how they look.

I had seen one, a girl for that sort. What surprised me was my inability to speak, why didn't I just sale her out and get my job done, they have been wanted for a long time. She did look oddly familiar though, I could say she had one if those faces that everyone reckons but I'm sure I know her from somewhere. The only question is, where?

The familiar scent of lavender and honey suckle caressed my nose freely as I made my way through the large wooden doors of my parents house. Taking my large coat off my body, leaving me in only my cop attire, I hang it up and walk into the kitchen where I find my parents in a pretty heated moment.

My mother has been sandwiched between the counter top with my Dad's tongue down her throat. "Jerome, we need to stop this" she whispers almost with a slight giggle, completely oblivious to her surroundings or aware that her eggs are starting to burn.

I lightly smile at their exchange and decide to interfere before I cross my boundaries of respect towards them. "The eggs are on fire!" I nearly shout causing the two to quickly separate from each other, finally administering my presence.

"See, I told you we needed to stop. God knows how far we would have gone, I could have lost my bloody sanity and the poor boy would have witnessed such foul things!!!" She whisper yelled to my dad, lightly smacking him on the shoulder.

"You know I can't help myself around you my love" he innocently replied, causing a chuckle to escape my lips.

After giving them both quick hugs, I help prepare breakfast and set the table. "So son, how is work?" My mother asked as we all ate our breakfast. I looked up at her, she was a splitting image of me in rarest parts of my physical appearance. She had long wavy brunette hair, dark brown eyes, almost to a point where they were completely black if not paid attention to and stood at about 5'6 feet tall, whereas my dad is 6'2 feet tall, with dark grey eyes and light brown hair.

"It's all perfect, thank you for asking. I've been assigned to the youth team that deals with the minor cases until we are fully equipped to qualify to the senior team." I answer back seriously.

"Do you like your work? Would you assume the six months spent at the police training academy finally paid off?" She questions, eyeing my dad and I whilst taking a sip out of her mug.

"I wouldn't be to sure ma, I've only been two weeks in work so I'm still trying to fit in it all. Though I can say, I enjoy it so far, helping bring justice to the country and it's people" I replied, using my words wisely. My mother simply smiled with a small hum.

"My son is finally following in our footsteps-" my dad starts but I interrupt knowing how far this conversation is going to go and where it will end.

"Look, dad" I start, making sure to pick my words correctly, "don't think because you wanted me to become a police officer for those reasons, that I'll suddenly be all in and keen on it." I say sternly. My father used to work as the head deputy of the country, and so did his father and on for the past generation. Ofcourse they all started off as simple cops but eventually got promoted to deputy heads, he obviously wants the same thing for me which I do appreciate as a form of his support but that's not what I want, it's never been and never will. No matter how many times we argue about this it just doesn't seen to sink in for fucks sake!

Looking straight into his deep grey eyes with a poker face on I adjust my tie whilst standing to my feet, suddenly loosing my appetite. I needed to get to work as soon as possible as I was running late.

"I'm off to work now, I'll call you later" I say quickly walking out the kitchen and grabbing my coat.

As I nervously sat on the chair opposite from Officer Roger's he went on and read my findings on the where about of the elites association, a dangerous group of men that partakes human trafficking.

"I'm impressed." He smiles widely, causing the never ending patches of skin to fold at his cheeks. I let out a sigh of relief and return the gesture, satisfied before leaving his office.

I take a quick stop at the usual bar I go near my house, parking my car just outside and walk in. I order two shots of vodka and pomegranate whilst observing the nearly empty bar as I take my sips.

When my gaze is averted to the smoking area outside I notice a familiar face staring up at the sky as she inhaled deep drags from her fag. The smoke seemed to relax her muscles as she exhaled it out forming perfect hoop clouds in the air. Her long eyelashes battling through the wind ever so slightly as she shut them occasionally. She almost looked angelic but was far from being an angel. It was with time that I noticed I was staring so with a quick debating in my mind I decided to walk over instead.

Taking my stance next to her as the cold wind harshly swept through our bodies, I decided to speak. "Pretty chill night isn't it?" I started to converse still keeping my gaze straight ahead.

Abruptly she turned to face me and so did I until our eyes met, I hadn't seen her up close, and she did look different. Her eyes were bright hazel which intrigued me.

Quickly, almost immediately she snapped her eyes away from our intense stare. "So, do you often come here?" I asked, but she didn't bother utter a single word. Initially one thing ran through mind. - find a way to make her give out information about the devils' toxics and their whereabouts.

Her eyes lazily drinking up her pupils as she rolled her eyes to the back of her head. Then, she gets up and throws her fag on the ground and begins to walk out the smoking area not before I grab her right arm.

"Let me go if you don't wanna see me lose my shit." She stated in a stern voice. I look over at her in amazement, two weeks ago she looked so vulnerable and helpless but I see some balls have been grown.

"What's your name?" I decided to ask, I might as well know her name right?

Her lips tug up lightly, and she says, "you can call me sky." Before winking my way and leaving the area. I shake my head with a smile before going over to my car and heading home.
