Chapter 1 - Pilot
(Hayden POV)
I shiver as I hug my arms, my teeth rattling loudly as I try to clench my jaw shut.. scared to make any noise that would draw them to my hiding spot.
I watch as my arms are suddenly covered in goosebumps as a cold breeze rushes past me. "Where'd she go?" I hear a deep aggravated voice say from behind the desk I'm currently crouched under.
I hold my breath and cover my mouth with my hand, trying to muffle any sound that is trying to escape me.
I'm worried that if my heart starts beating any louder, it'll give me away. I swear it's pounding so hard I can feel it vibrating in my head.
"Who was the one that let her escape?" another retorts back in a sarcastic voice, "Shut up. it wasn't my fault" he snaps back. "The sister jumped me" he adds quietly.
Suddenly there was a loud gun shot.
I jumped out of my skin as I hear both men turn abruptly on the spot, "they must have found her! go!" one says before I hear footsteps take off in the opposite direction to me.
I hear their footsteps echo out of the room and down the hallway, indicating that I was now alone.
This is my chance.
I throw myself out from under the table before sprinting to the window in front of me, my hands reaching for the latch.
I pull with all my might, but it doesn't budge."Come on" I curse quietly through clenched teeth, but it still wouldn't budge.
I turn around and scan my surroundings for another escape route.... my only option being to follow the direction of where the two men ran.
Three more gunshots sounded in the distance, I jump again as I feel tears threaten to spill over.
I suck a big breath in.
"Come on Hayden" I say blinking back my tears as my eyes land on a smaller, edgy rock that lays by my foot. I stare at it for all of five seconds before I make my mind up..
"Screw it" I mumble as I lean down and grab the rock, taking two steps back before hurling it at the window.
The sound of glass shattering echo's through the room and no doubt the building.
I hear the distant sound of a runners screams echoing, knowing that not only may I have alerted the humans who are trying to kill me.... but the infected as well...
I grab the edge of the window frame, wincing as I feel small shards of glass prick the palms of my hands while I lift myself out the window and landing on the grass outside.
"It came from in there!" I waste no time in looking to see where the voice came from. My feet take off into a hurried sprint as I rave towards the forest tree line.
If I get in there, I have a chance of finding somewhere to hide and stay low until they pass through.
"She has a gun! don't approach head on!" I hear another shout from behind me as I feel myself get confused slightly, though I don't slow down.
I let a breath out once I see tree's pass by me, knowing I was a little safer now I was in the forest.
I didn't stop running though, my feet wouldn't let me stop. The adrenaline taking over my body as I try to listen for footsteps behind me but yet I hear nothing.
Keep going. Keep going.
I can feel my lungs starting to object, pushing harder to keep me running as my throat feels like it's getting smaller by each second.
I see a large tree trunk coming up, so I slow my pace a little to prepare for a quick stop so I could catch my breath.
I turn my head quickly, scanning the scene behind me. I feel relief flood me as I see nothing but trees and grass, no one following.
I take this chance to hide myself behind the large tree, my back leaning against the hard bark of the trunk.
My chest rises and falls quickly as I try to slow my breathing, knowing I have to be prepared for another sprint in case someone sees me here.
I can still feel the glass in my hands as I look down to see blood dripping over my fingers.
I sigh in frustration as I let my head drop back against the tree, looking up at the blue sky above.
Where am I going to go? Why did I make it out and not my sister? I hope she's okay....
Knowing I can't go back to the horrid place I try to think about my next moves. What am I going to do?
I let my head hang down as I try not to let my emotions get the best of me... there will be time for that later when people are hunting me down.
I take another breath as I close my eyes, hearing my heart finally begin to slow its pace... keep going Hayden...
Then I hear it.
My breath hitches as my heart almost stops..
There is the unmistakable sound of a gun clicking a bullet into the chamber.... right next to my temple.
Slowly I let my eyes shift, then my head... still holding my breath as I finally look beside me....... I'm staring down the barrel of a gun.
I look past the gun to see a woman.... the first thing I notice is her eyes.... her green eyes. Then her freckles and the slit in her right eyebrow from what looks to be a scar.
Then I notice the expression on her face.... Confusion and shock.
I feel my hands tremble as I stare at her, waiting for her to pull the trigger and take my life away from me....
I don't move a muscle... what do I do?
I say the first thing that comes to mind..
"Please just make it quick" I whisper in a small voice, hearing it quiver and crack in fear, watching as her eyebrows crease slightly.
I close my eyes and hold my breath, waiting for the impact...
And then she pulls the trigger.
