Bill dodged the ectoplasm with a quick laugh, looking a little surprised at Danny's sudden outburst. The blast blew a tree behind them off the ground, leaning haphazardly onto the surrounding foliage for support. Black smoke billowed momentarily in the air.
The group surrounding Danny shared a glance, Jazz biting her lower lip. Bill had entered into touchy territory for her little brother and she was more than a little nervous. He was a teen, after all; teens could be severe hotheads.
She wrinkled her nose at the idea of head and threw her Jack o' Nine Tails to the ground, pulling out a small pocket knife with practiced care. Ever since Danny told her about the Dan incident she'd been more than a little paranoid of possible ghostly enemies out to get her and found herself carrying small weapons of choice. The blade, well, it was coated in hardened ectoplasm and sharpened with precision, but Jazz thought she could never be too careful when it came to sociopathic humans that might be compelled to pull her into an alley one day. It was a safety precaution, and a pretty good one at that.
Stan was pulling out a blade of his own, though it looked a little more deadly than her simple pocket knife.
"You want to fight?" Bill laughed easily and fully; a deadly mix of sarcasm and cockiness. His voice, however, was no longer at the cheerful higher-pitched volume that they had grown accustomed to. Rather, it was dark and menacing, red swirling in the monstrosity's eye. "I'll tear you to shreds."
Vlad threw another ectoblast and it hit Bill square in the chest with a deadly crack; or, maybe that was just the ground. Spidering out like webs from Bill's feet, the dried dirt fractured into pieces. His perfect attire was shredded where the blast hit him. Despite, this, he was smiling. It was the same creepily large smile that Vlad's features had endured, and Danny shivered.
Bill's hand lit up in blue flame and he threw it at Vlad with ease. The older man rushed to place a shield over himself and the fireball smacked against the ectoplasm with deadly force before dissipating into thin air.
The world around them exploded into fireballs and smoke. Innocent trees took the brunt of the damage, the sound of cracking wood and the smell of fire numbing their senses. Danny found himself rushing about with his ice powers rather than fighting in an attempt to stop the flames from reaching further into the forest. Oh, how he wished nothing interesting had happened during this trip. If Cujo had been the only problematic moment, this vacation would prove to be a lot more relaxing.
Wait a minute.
Danny reached for his belt and pulled out the Fenton Thermos with ease. Thank God he'd developed the habit of never leaving without it. Twisting off the cap, he pressed the release button and let Cujo out of the metal prison (and the two ghosts that ran the Dusk 2 Dawn, but he sucked those back in before they even knew what had happened). The puppy shook his head confusedly before Danny floated down amidst the smoke and shouted, "Go get it, boy! Go get Bill!"
A yap of excitement rang through the air before Cujo grew ten times his size, his bark becoming low and dangerous. The dog bounded into the smoke with Danny following quickly behind, putting the thermos away and lighting his fists in green ectoplasm.
He punched that smug triangle in the jaw so hard Bill flew into the tree behind himself.
Cujo busied himself with attacking.
Danny smirked; maybe this wouldn't be too hard of a fight, after all. And as a bonus, Serafina was already taken care of (though that had been a gruesome death. Danny preferred not to think about it).
He totally jinxed it.
Bill shoved the snarling dog off with one swift motion, throwing it to the other side of the meadow and pushing himself off the damaged tree. His fists were alit in blue flames and his hair and clothes were askew, but his eyes were more deadly than ever. That dumb smirk no longer adorned his face, and Danny quickly came to the realization that that was very, very bad.
"You know what, change of plans. How about I just slowly and painfully kill all of you?"
Just like that, the tables turned.
The ground rumbled underneath their feet and they all stumbled, struggling to stay upright against the deadly force of a powerful earthquake. Jazz rolled out of the way of a falling tree and just barely evaded the trunk, though she did manage to get some scrapes on her face and branches in her hair. Mabel, however, wasn't so lucky. A loose and damaged tree hit her leg as she tried to jump out of the way, pinning her foot underneath the trunk. She screamed out in pain, her right light-up sneaker flashing wildly.
Stan lunged for Bill, the dagger in his hand glinting in the summer sun as he brought it down onto his enemy. Bill dodged, though Stan did manage to nick his cheek and cause blood to run into the corner of his mouth. The triangle took his fist and slammed it into Stan's solar plexus, making him drop to the floor. He gasped for air like a fish whilst Bill stepped over his body, not even the hint of a victory smile on his face. He was glaring at Danny.
Vlad came from behind Bill, shooting down like a rocket and throwing a single ectoblast in Bill's direction. At the same time, Bill swiftly turned and threw his own fireball at Vlad. The ectoblast hit Bill in the side and the fireball slammed into Vlad's chest. He fell from the sky and made a crater in the cracked and shaking ground.
Pacifica, Jazz, and Wendy were struggling with the large tree that crushed Mabel's foot. They finally eased it off of her and she screeched again when Jazz gingerly touched it, examining the damage. Dipper had rushed over to Stan, standing hesitantly over his body with tears in his eyes.
Danny was stopping forest fires from getting too far. No doubt someone was already wondering what was going on. He turned when the forest was successfully saved from blue flames and started towards Bill, but what he saw stopped him in his tracks.
Mabel was still crying by the fallen log, reaching out for Jazz's now-limp body. There was blood leaking from her temple. Wendy was standing, frozen, in front of Bill. Pacifica was in the triangle's arms, his hand wrapped around her throat and his other arm pressing her against his body.
His fingertips lit in blue flames and he dug them into her skin, causing Pacifica to scream out. The flames extinguished.
"Move any closer and I'll rip her throat out."
Danny froze, lifting his hands in surrender. "No! No. Don't hurt her," he quickly pleaded, dropping to the ground. It had finally stopped quivering, leaving only silence in the forest that was once filled with noise and life. The lack of sound was eerie.
Bill, his blonde hair covered in dirt and clumped with blood, his eyepatch fallen off his face and revealing a gaping hole where his other eye should have been, his spectacular suit nothing but burn marks, bloodstains, and torn pieces of fabric, hinted at a smile but the action quickly disappeared, leaving nothing but raging hate. "Now do your little thingamajig and go human."
"Don't do it, Danny!" It was Wendy, finally taken out of her stupor. Bill frowned and lifted up the hand that wasn't hovering over Pacifica's throat, firing a blast at Wendy with little care. Danny put a shield over his friend at the last moment and saved Wendy from the effects of the crippling fireball.
"Okay!" Danny shouted, closing his eyes. He put his hands back up in surrender, the white rings forming around his middle and shifting him into the usual black-haired teen. Danny Fenton looked like a mess, his hair askew, his skin charred and bloody. Wendy thought he might fall over on the spot, a look of complete hopelessness crossing his face. Danny's shoulders drooped. He looked at Stan, who was still lying on the ground; and Dipper, that stupid scratch on his cheek from the Dusk 2 Dawn incident, his eyes wide, dirt caking his fingers and forehead. He saw Mabel and her crushed foot, biting her lip to keep from screaming out in pain; and Jazz, lying unconscious on the ground, and the crater that Vlad had left in the dry dirt from falling out of the sky.
Danny took a deep breath. "I'll come with you willingly. All you have to do is let my friends and family go."
"No!" It was from Wendy again, but Bill seemed to have blocked her out. His grip loosened on Pacifica.
Danny saw Vlad in the corner of his eye coming out of the crater and silently sneaking closer to Bill. He pretended to not notice it.
"You sure you wanna make that deal, Phantom?" queried Bill, that trademark smirk finally playing across his features once more. He had won.
"Yeah, pretty sure." Danny nodded, glancing back at Vlad. The man's gaze was fixed on Pacifica. He was going to try and save her.
Something must have happened, but Danny had a hard time recalling what triggered it. Maybe he had stared at Vlad too long, or a stick had cracked, but something caused Bill to turn around.
And the sight of Vlad so close set Bill off like a firecracker.
It was a series of pictures in Danny's mind. The flames licking across Bill's fingertips, igniting quicker than he could blink. The echoing scream of Pacifica.
It was the last sound her throat made.
The body, falling to the grass below, glazed eyes staring up at the smokey air. Sightless. Lifeless.
And the blood, oh, the blood, staining the dirt and the grass and coating Pacifica's mauled neck.
Vlad lashed out in defense, turning intangible and dodging Bill's crazed movements. His fist reached out and wrapped around Bill's human heart, which he promptly tore out of the triangle's chest.
Bill's mouth opened in surprise and Vlad grabbed onto his collar as the life drained from the monster's eye.
"Now you're really a heartless bastard."
Vlad dropped Bill and his still-beating heart onto the ground, the adrenaline fading from his body. He looked down at his blood-soaked hands and then up at the group of wide-eyed kids before taking off into the sky.
Dipper was the first to react.
"Pacifica!" He rushed towards her still body, his knees collapsing underneath him as he studied her wounds. The blood was starting to slow but it didn't fail to stain his white socks and dark shorts.
Stan finally got his feet underneath him and his breathing steadied. He headed towards Mabel and carefully picked her up, wincing as she screamed out before falling unconscious due to the unbearable pain.
Danny sucked Cujo back into the thermos and rushed towards his sister, carefully lifting her off the ground. She mumbled incomprehensibly and Danny figured that she had gotten hit in the head. Probably a concussion.
"We have to get them to the hospital," Stan mumbled, trying to take Dipper away from Pacifica's body. This was not something a thirteen-year old should experience.
"I'm not leaving without Pacifica," Dipper said, a tear sliding down his cheek and landing on Pacifica's tattered purple dress.
"Dipper ... " Wendy squirmed uncomfortably, averting her eyes and twisting her fingers nervously.
"No! She's not dead," Dipper urged, putting his hand over Pacifica's throat. "She has to go to the hospital, too. She's not dead. She can't be--"
"Dipper," Danny's voice cracked as the adrenaline faded from his body. This was his fault. He was sure of it. "I'm so sorry."
"She's okay," Dipper was losing the determination in his voice. His blood-soaked hands lost their hold on Pacifica's mangled throat. "She has to be okay. She can't really be ... How is this ... ?"
Wendy helped Dipper up carefully. "Dipper, we need to go," she urged, taking him by the shoulder and leading him towards the shack. Danny and Stan followed them out of the meadow, leaving behind the wreckage. Leaving Pacifica's and Bill's bodies on the cracked earth, and the charred marks on the trees, and the blood and tragedies and ruined foliage behind them.
Nobody said a word the entire walk back to the Mystery Shack.
