Chapter 7: Kids Clothes

"Well if it ain't my girl, Judy!" Judy immediately heard as she stepped through the door. She sighed and smiled, enjoying the voice of her best friend in person.

Miranda's general store was small and confined, yet had a lot to offer. She sold a lot of items, ranging from clothes, food, furniture, and old video games that were still considered new in their small town. She was very dedicated to her store. She was always on top of things when it came to adding new items to the store. Every time a customer came into her store, they'd be surprised at how many different things she had to offer. Everyone in town appreciated her for helping out the town in that way. Fredericksburg was a remote town, so it wasn't like she had trucks sending her these items. She was the truck driver that brought life into this town.

Her husband, Jerry, was the mechanic of the town. Everyone came to him if they ever had car issues, and when he wasn't fixing up cars, he ran his bar that was in the back of the general store. All the guys in town came to his bar for one reason, and one reason only; his flat screen TV. No one in town had a TV like his, and the fact that he allowed people to come over to watch sports on it, attracted mostly everyone. That's all they needed; some booze and a high quality picture.

It was hard for Judy to categorize their store. She didn't know anyone who worked so hard on their own store like Miranda and Jerry.

"Hey gurl!" Miranda jumped out from one of the few aisles with her arms wide open and a bright smile, which startled Judy, but made her smile grow.

Miranda had short brown hair that was tied in the back into a bun. She had tan skin with sparkling blue eyes. She wore a casual blue and white dress that radiated her happiness, and a pair of Jerry's cowboy boots.

"It's been so long, has it not?" Miranda asked, overjoyed by Judy's presence.

"It sure has..." Judy agreed with a nod, and looked past Miranda towards the story, trying to find the small clothes section in her store.

"Sit down with me, will ya? So much has happened since we last talked, we have to catch up!" Miranda told her excitedly as she rushed behind the counter, grabbing a fresh pot of coffee.

"Miranda, I wish I could, but I'm kind of in a hurry..." She told her, her focus moving away from her friend and to the store.

Judy found herself slowly stepping away from Miranda. Had it been any other day, she would have loved to sit down and have a coffee with her best friend. She was more focused on the boy though. It didn't seem like the kid knew anyone in town. For all Judy knows, she's the only person that knows about the boy.

Although she didn't know much about him, she felt the need to help him, even if he never asked for it.

Miranda was about to fill a cup for Judy, but she saw her friend going to the back of the store, so she stopped and placed it back down.

"Oh? What did you need?" Miranda asked as she walked around the corner and followed Judy.

"I'm looking for some clothes. Do you still have that clothing section?" Judy asked as she looked in each aisle, but never found any.

Miranda shook her head.

"Nope. No one bought from it. My store ain't no American Eagle," Miranda joked.

"Do you still have the clothes?" Judy turned to Miranda and asked.

Miranda lifted her finger and nodded.

"You're lucky. I was just about to donate all of them, but you can take some if you'd like." She told Judy.

Judy sighed with relief, and placed her hand on Miranda's shoulder. "Oh thank you, Miranda. I dunno what I'd do without ya, really."

Miranda smiled, and waved Judy away. "Oh you better hold that until you see the clothes I have. They're no Chanel."

"I'll take what I can get," Judy told her.

"Right this way, then," Miranda said and went back to the counter.

Judy followed her over, and when she got there, her friend already had the box out.

Miranda opened the box, and started placing the clothing on the counter for Judy to see.

"There are some cute flannels I know you can rock," she said as she placed the shirts one by one.

Judy was about to stop her and tell her what she was looking for, but she saw her friend's eyes light up.

She pulled out a dark red & blue flannel that was worn out, and smiled as she held it.

"I kid you not; When I got this shirt, I immediately thought of you. This shirt is so Junior year you." Miranda laughed.

Judy wanted to avoid talking about her awkward phase in high school, so she faked a laugh and tried to change the subject.

"Uh, Miranda, this is nice and all, but do you by any chance have any kids clothes?" Judy asked her.

Miranda stopped, and her smile slowly faded away. She tilted her head a bit and looked at Judy strangely.

"Um, w-w-why do you need kids clothes, Judith?" Miranda asked her suspiciously.

Even though Miranda was her best friend, she couldn't quite tell her. The more she thought about it, the more strange her situation appeared to her. She barely knew what was going on herself.

"It's just for something..." Judy told her, hoping that she wouldn't be the good friend that she was and question her more.

Miranda looked at her oddly before she reached under the counter and lifted up another box.

"Here's what I got..." Miranda gave her the box, taking a step back as she watched Judy go through the box.

Judy smiled as she found some boy clothes that seemed to be Evo's size. A pair of brown cargo shorts and red shirt with the number "01" on the back.

"Judith..." Miranda said in a sad tone.

Judy looked up, and saw a worried look on her friend's face.

"What's wrong?" She asked curiously.

"I should be asking you that..." Miranda said, eyeing the clothes she had in her hands.

Judy was about to respond, but when she looked down at the clothes and the box in front of her, she knew what Miranda was referring to.

"Nothing's wrong..." She wanted her to believe.

"You never talked about it with me, Judith. You've had me worried sick." Miranda told her, and reached for her hand.

Judy saw Miranda's hand close in on hers, and she retracted, distancing herself from her friend.

"There's nothing to talk about." Judy gravely said, sniffing as she held the small clothes to her chest.

Miranda sighed, and leaned in further, trying to reach for her again, "Judith-"

"I have to go, Miranda," Judy said as she was walking towards the door, "thank you again for the clothes, I appreciate it."

Before Miranda could stop her, Judy had left the store, sounding the bell that echoed throughout the building.

Miranda pulled back her hand, and looked down at the box of kids clothes. She then frowned.

"No problem..." She whispered as she pulled out a baby sock, and tried to look at it. She shook her head and sniffed as she threw it back in. She fell onto her old chair and looked at the ceiling.

All she could think about was what happened to her best friend, and how it drastically it changed her.
