Future 67
Future 67
"Dad...." I started backing away from the table. "Your acting really weird..."
"You must be contained. Go to government facility." My father stood up, his words slurred and his tone emotionless.
"Dad...."
My mother stood up, with the same expressionless face as dad. "You are fourteen years of age. You must be contained."
"What's wrong with you?!" I demanded.
It had been just like that. One moment we where sitting and eating dinner like always, the next my family's body's went rigid and their souls seemed to be sucked right out of them. All except for me. I kept moving away from them, my back suddenly hitting the wall.
"Finnick Powers, you must be contained." a small voice pipped from the door way near me.
My tiny six year old sister stood in the door to the living room, her blond hair messy around her head and the same dead expression on her face as my parents.
"Sona..." I breathed, backing against the wall more. "Not you too..."
"You must be contained." She repeated, her eyes unblinking.
"No...Whats going on? This better not be some prank! It's not funny!"
"This is reality Finnick." Mom tilted her head and smiled. Her voice seemed almost far off, the same sounding at first but when I heard it I just knew it wasn't my mother's. "And you have to be contained. Let's go to the government holding facility."
My family started walking towards me, shuffling their feet and putting their arms out, as if they where in a zombie movie.
"Stop it!" my heart started pounding.
My brain felt like stirred up pudding, my whole body was shaking in fear; I didn't understand what was happening around me. Just think about it. What if your family suddenly turned into zombies that wanted to haul you away somewhere right after a fast power outage. One second your life is normal. Literally seconds after, everything is upside down.
Dad put an outstretched arm on my shoulder clenching it tightly. "Let go!" I pushed him away out of utter fear.
Lucky for me, the 'transformation' as I was calling it left my family slow and uncoordinated. As if they were still learning how to use their limbs. I scrambled away, ducking under them and clawing at the ground to move across the room. I knocked over a chair behind me and dashed through the house. I slipped on the slick floors, crashing into the walls and slick furniture in the halls. I reached the front door and put my hand on the pad beside the door.
"Open door?" A female voice asked politely from the computer.
"Yes!"
"One moment."
"Come on!" I practically jumped pressing my fingers harder against the glass.
"Finnick, is currently grounded. He cannot leave the premises." The computer informed.
"What?! This is an emergency!"
"What kind of emergency? Should I call 911?"
"No! Just open the door!"
"Please state your emergency."
"Finnick!" My mom's voice echoed through the house behind me.
I yelped, and stumbled back knocking over a pot with umbrellas sticking from it.
"Please state your emergency."
Thinking fast I grabbed one of the umbrellas. I stuck the metal end into a crack in the circular door, jamming it in as far as I could push it. I dug my feet down and started prying the door open, slightly bending the umbrella in the process.
"Finnick!" Dad called.
They where closer now.
"Pleas state your emergency." The computer urged.
I groaned, my arms crying out in effort. The door was only inches apart, the evening light seeping into the hallway. A ringing alarm started sounding though in the walls of the house.
"Break in! There is a break in at the front door!" The computer started shouting through the ringing alarms.
"Shut up!" I yelled over the noise, still struggling with the umbrella. "You stupid, stupid computer..."
"Finnick Powers, you must be contained." I looked over to see my mom leading the rest of my family down the hallway towards me.
I pushed harder on the umbrella, my hands shaking violently. I feared the umbrella would snap if I pushed any harder, but just as I thought it would break in my hands the door flew open. Dropping the umbrella I clambered to my feet, rushing down the path to the drive way.
Everything was chaos. Outside, adults and children where lumbering around the road and sidewalks, slumping after teenagers who seemed to be the only ones who hadn't been effected by the 'transformation'. Teens huddle together in fast conversation, or got in their cars to drive away only to find their hovering vehicle not able to work. Some started running down the street screaming their lungs out like a crazed person.
"Finnick! Whats going on?!" A skinny redheaded kid my age dashed over to me, tottering a little and accidentally shoving me a little.
Freckles where splattered across his pale skin, and his large green eyes darted around wildly. He panted fro breath, his hand shaking violently.
"How am I supposed to know, Kai!" I snapped. "Did the same thing happen to your fokes?!"
"And my younger siblings! And Aunt Rena!" Kai's lip quivered a little. "What do you think happened? It happened right after that power outage. Dude, power outages are impossible, remember! The Unit made power shortages impossible like ten years ago!"
"I know!" I threw my hands up a little. "I know...."
"What are we gonna do...?"
I opened my mouth to respond but, never got the chance. An ear piercing screech sliced through the air, all eyes staring over to a huge black van like bus that plowed through the street, coming to a quick halt.
"Everyone, remain calm! We are here to explain everything!" A man clad in a black bullet proof suit jumped out of the car holding a small voice megaphone in his hand. "Please line up, and everything will shortly be explained!"
The loud shouting and chattering came to a stop and everyone froze.
"You'll be safe, just please come with us! It's okay, everything will be back to normal shortly!"
Slowly, teens started scuffling towards the man and the giant bus.
"That's right, everything will be under control! We're taking you all to a save facility while we work everything out! Everyone will be back to normal soon!"
Two doors opened up in the back of the bus and two more bullet proof clad people climbed out and started guiding shaking teens into the bus. Only a couple of kids stood on the side walk, watching the other youths go into the back of the bus.
Kai looked at me questionably.
"I dunno..." I didn't take my eyes off the vehicle.
"Come on!" The man with the megaphone urged. "Everything will be fine if you just come with us!"
"Why should we?! A girl shouted. She threw her sun tanned arms up angrily, her bright blue hair shinning in the fading sun. "How do we know you aren't the ones who caused all this?!"
I glanced around; all the adults and children had stopped, standing motionless in the street and on the side walk of the neighborhood.
"I can assure you that we are only trying to help the situation mam! Our job is to get everything normal again and we need you all to come with us so we can do that!"
A couple more kids stumbled to the back of the bus.
"Now please, everyone to the bus!"
I still didn't move, Kai intern, standing beside me. The man with the megaphone sighed a little like he had expected this.
"Kids, this is your last chance before we make you come with us!" He warned.
"That's agaist the law! I told you guys, this is all their fault! Somehow they took our families souls! They couldn't get ours so now their gonna kill us!" the wild haired girl shouted.
The man rolled his eyes and turned to the bus door, saying something inaudible to the passenger. He reached inside and pulled out something black that he could fit in his hand. A gun. He raised the gun at the girl and the group with her, sending panicked screams from the crowd. I caught my breath and I felt Kai scoot behind me a little.
"Get in the bus or suffer the consciences!" The man commanded.
The kids whimpered loudly but no one moved. The man shot two bullets in the air, the shots echoing through the street, and sending the teens into frightened scurries and shrieks. Kids shoved and pushed into the bus.
"Finnick, we gotta go!" Kai shoved me towards the road.
I didn't respond, only swaying a little and staring at the gun in the man's hand.
"Fine," Kai bumped past me, "If you won't save yourself at least I will."
I still didn't move. I noticed the blue haired girl hadn't gone to the bus either, she just glared harshly at the man with the gun. The two people at the back of the bus quickly advanced towards the girl, and grabbed her arms. She screeched and struggled kicking and punching but the men in black clearly where used to the rebellion and it was only minutes later that the girl was pushed into the bus.
"You!" The man with the gun turned to me. "Come on! Don't make us come over there!"
My feet were planted to the ground. Kai glanced back at me, about to climb into the bus. He shot me a look that pleaded me to just come along.
"Three! Seven! We got one more over here!" The man spouted to the other two people.
Suddenly, the men in black were sprinting at me, their faces fierce. I caught my breath and backed up but I didn't think fast enough to even turn around and run in time. The guards barreled into me, and I flew backwards, slamming into the ground like a sack of rocks. An acute pain sprung up on the back of my head, and pain burned on my skin. Red and black danced in my vision, and I felt my arms lifted up by the uncaring guards. I tried to move and shout in protest but my body didn't seem to work. My head rolled back and I felt my consciousness slipping. I got one last glance at my circular styled home. Then, just like that, everything went black.
