Harry.
It was a long fucking day and it only five past twelve.
I slammed the report I'd gone through shut, the moment the COO left my office. He informed me that the head accountant was one number was off, and it did not make me happy. I went over the reports with him and we realised that the best decision was to lay him off. It wasn't the first time it happened, and if it occurred once more, it could lead to a great downfall for the business. If that panned out, we'd have to lay off well over a hundred people.
It was my company and I planned to run it as best as I could — and wasn't going to fail.
Frustrated, I tapped my fingers on the desk surface, before storming out of the room straight to where my personal assistant was sitting. She immediately stood up at the sight of me, quickly ending the conversation with whoever she was speaking with on the phone.
"Iris. Have you heard from Seren—Miss Hayes, yet? She was supposed to email me about the contracting companies that I sent her to choose from," I questioned her.
And for some strange reason, that was the only main thing that crossed my mind for the past few hours.
"If I may, why don't you contact her yourself, Mr Styles?" she asked, trying to hold in a smile that was attempting to form.
My PA rarely smiled, and that was mainly because there was no sense of decent emotion on this entire floor of this building.
"I, um, it's better for you to do it." I furrowed my brows at her statement.
"Well, I was going to meet her after work today, but I had to cancel because something came up. She invited me out to a cafe up near she lives that she really likes."
"Oh? What — um — which is it?"
"It's called the Quaint Corner Café. It's up in North Vancouver. I mean, you might know where it's at."
"I think I passed it before."
"Right." She bit the corner of her lips, still attempting to hide that grin. "Should I message her and ask about them?"
"Ask about what? Oh, no. I'll contact her instead. That's fine. I was actually heading up there for a meeting later today."
Shit.
Why am I lying? She's my PA, and I have no fucking meeting.
I'm a fucking mess.
"I'm aware, Mr Styles. Would you like a coffee? You seem like you need one."
"Yes, please. Two extra espresso shots, thank you," I replied and headed back to my office.
Why did she act like I did have actually did have a meeting? She knew I didn't.
I had a shit ton of things to do, though, and I knew it would carry until well through the night. Ordering takeout had been my go-to since I rarely went home to have a proper cooked meal. Linda, my house caretaker, used to do it, but I ended up just telling her to stay to make sure the house was clean. She did prepare for me a breakfast-to-go sometimes — well, on the days she knew I actually went back to the apartment.
There was a suite two floors up in this building that I always kept a wardrobe filled with clothes that I could wear. Again, Linda came by to tidy up and send the laundry to the dry cleaners.
As for the only decent meals that I had, were when I went to dinner meetings; and even then, I wouldn't finish my plate since the sole purpose was to talk business.
Hours went by, papers and reports were gone through, video conferences were done, and another two strong coffees later, was when I leaned back in my chair, completely exhausted.
Checking the time on my watch and found that it was just past six-thirty. I still had several files to go through on my computer, but I weighed my options for what I could do next.
Do work or go to the café.
That's if she was still there.
Work hours were over almost two hours ago, so the chance she was still there, was less likely — or she'd be close to leaving soon. With traffic at this hour, it would take another forty, or so, minutes to get there.
It was a long shot, but before I bothered to think twice about it again, I'd slipped my jacket back on, grabbed my phone, and left my office. When I entered the lobby, security wished me goodbye, and I just nodded in response.
As usual, I found Archie waiting by the car, but I decided on doing something else this time around. I let him go home early and headed to the parking garage to grab one of the company cars; and the last time I'd done that, I was first starting out.
It had been a few months since I last physically drove a car, and it actually made me relax. I missed the feeling of how driving helped release the stress and tension throughout my body. The traffic in Vancouver was a bitch, but somehow, it still helped me.
What I mentioned to Iris that I passed by the café before, I had indeed — the two times I came to Serenity's studio. It was only a few minutes away from it, but I definitely noticed it.
In the past, I used to love going to new cafés and checking them out. I did have a favourite place in the city that I went to when I was studying in university. It was the perfect atmosphere for studying and to just relax, and they had the best fucking coffee — and tea. However, it'd been years since I set foot there and I never planned on doing so again.
Somehow, it only took a mere half-hour to get to my destination, and I parked on the curb. Killing the engine, I looked through the window to see if I could spot her — but I couldn't. She wasn't there, and I was too late.
But just as I was about to start the car up again, I saw her long brunette hair flow as she leaned back in her chair laughing. She wasn't in direct view from where I had stopped, as she was sitting behind a pony wall. It was clear that she was with someone, but I didn't know who.
It took several minutes of debating whether or not I should bother to go inside — literally having a fucking pep talk with myself. Anyone who walked by the car would either think I was mental or having a phone conversation with someone via Bluetooth.
Stop it, Styles. You're acting like a fucking teenager. Why are you doing this? She's just a girl, and you feel nothing for her. There are no such things as fucking feelings anymore. They don't exist — especially for you.
After a short while, I finally decided what I was going to do. I got out of the car, and walked to the entrance of the café — before changing my mind, again.
Like the name of the place, it was exactly what it was — very quaint and cosy. Based on the décor, it wasn't necessarily a place that I would've ever considered entering again, as me in the past, but I also needed to try whatever it is they had. From a distance, I saw blank paper cups stacked on a far shelf, and I assumed this was the place she got me that tea in the near past.
Slowly, I entered the space, a chime ringing as I opened and closed the door. Only a few people were inside. Some looked like they were there on a date, another typing away on their computer — it reminded me of myself. And then, there was Serenity, her glasses perched upon her nose, as she giggled while telling a story of some sort.
An older lady stood at the cash register, an inviting and warm smile on her face. An apron covered her floral outfit. As I neared her, she spoke up, "What can I get you, son?"
"Um, I'd don't —"
"Harry?" Her familiar voice caught my attention, ringing in my ears, so melodically. I turned around to see her standing a couple of meters away from me. Adorning her body was a puffed short-sleeved lilac dress, pinched at the waist with a bow, flowing down reaching just above her knees with nude sandals on her feet. I was told that ballerinas never had the prettiest feet and tended to hide them, but she clearly didn't care. Her self-confidence was incredible.
The way she appeared in front of me made it seem like she came out of the sixties — and she looked absolutely beautiful. Her head was tilted slightly to the side as she looked at me, puzzled by my appearance.
"Serenity," I only replied with her name, unsure whatever else the fuck I should say.
"What are you doing here?"
"I heard, um, it was a good café. I thought I'd check it out."
"You're out of the office, on a Thursday, at seven in the evening. It's still light outside, you know that right."
"So?"
"So? Harry, you're like a bear coming out of hibernation," she said with a laugh, bringing her hair over to one side. "How did you even hear about this place? Not many people really come here, unless they live in the area, that is."
"Iris mentioned it."
"Really?" Her brow quirked upwards, seeming amused by my reveal.
"Um, yeah. She mentioned that she was supposed to see you today, and something came up. Also said I should check out the place since it's really good."
"Well, she'd never been here before. I told her it was amazing here, hence why I invited her..." she spoke with a grin. "...also to meet my friends. I mentioned them and said they're great if she wants to meet them."
"So you're not here alone?" Which I already knew that.
Her head shook as she bit the cover of her lips. "Do you have anything to do?"
"N-not right now, I guess."
"Do you want to meet them? Sit with us, maybe? I can get you a coffee. You know, they have insanely good muffins here — especially the blueberry. But there's also ban—"
"Blueberry," I interjected quickly. "And I can get it."
"No it's —"
"It's on the house, Rennie, dearie," the older woman spoke behind us.
"Thank you, Cora."
"It's not every day you have a male friend here," she said, and I could see the blush flare-up on Serenity's cheeks.
"It's not — He's not — We're not —"
"Cora, was it?" I asked the lady, saving her from whatever it was that she was trying to say, and the lady nodded. "Thank you, but I could have paid for it."
"Nonsense, child. Don't you worry about a thing." She smiled. "What would you like to drink?"
"A coffee please, black."
"Coming right up. You two go sit, I'll get you your order," her friendly tone was soothing, as she practically ushered us away. I noticed Serenity give her a look, just as warm with a smile — probably just thanking her.
I walked towards her, who started to make her way back to her table. I caught up a couple strides quicker when I lightly grabbed her forearm.
"How are your feet?" I asked, remembering the previous week when she unexpectedly took me dancing.
I didn't lie to her when I said I had two left feet. I couldn't fucking dance to save my life, but she was patient with me, even though I kept pestering her the entire time.
When she stepped close to me that day and unbuttoned my jacket, I was entirely taken off guard. It was the last thing I expected her to ever do. I could tell that she knew it was the only way to force me to actually do what she told me, but her boldness astounded me.
I saw the way she gazed into my eyes as I studied her — as she did to me. The deep sapphire blue of her eyes was striking and completely mesmerising. They were ones that I could get lost in for hours and never getting tired of them. Seeing Serenity from a distance was one thing, but up close, was a whole other story.
Every time I saw her, she had a bold merlot colour on her lips, showing her confidence to anyone who saw her; but now, they were a light pink, just as rosy as her cheeks were. Defined, natural brows helped frame her face.
The word beautiful couldn't even compare to how stunning she was. Pretty, alluring, charming, lovely, ravishing, were only a few words that started to describe her appearance — she was simply heavenly.
When I dipped her, I couldn't even remember how I did it. What possessed me to do it? I easily could have dropped her, injured her majorly knowing my complete lack of common sense when it came to Serenity. If anyone had walked in on us, they would think that I was about to kiss her — but I wasn't. I only wanted to gaze in her eyes, seeing her again up close, without any distractions or words spoken between us. I didn't know when I would have the chance to do so again, so I took advantage of the moment and risked it.
With her, I took way too many risks — and many of them were definitely unplanned.
There was one thing that I noticed, though, was that she saw one of the things I've kept hidden for years — one of my insecurities. The strange part about it was that she never even commented about it. She respected my privacy, and that only made me appreciate her more.
With everything, though, I still could not trust her fully.
I couldn't trust anyone.
Everyone betrays me — and one way is that they use my weaknesses against me.
"What's wrong with her feet?" A woman who was sitting nearby asked me. She had short brunette hair, dark caramel skin, big brown eyes, and was very beautiful.
"Harry ran over them with his car the other day. Just a minor bruise, though. It's a miracle, I'll tell ya," Serenity said with a grin, looking at who appeared to be her friend, then back at me.
To me, it was clear that she didn't want to tell her that I stepped on her toes countless of times, by teaching me how to dance. Something inside me said that she already knew anyway.
What caught my eye was something else, though — someone else. A man who looked about my age, sitting across from her friend. Chestnut hair and chocolate eyes, and a slight beard — similar to my own on some days.
"So Harry, this is my best friend, Amara, but everyone calls her Mars," Serenity said she sat down.
The strange man then wrapped his arm around Serenity.
This fucker.
"Ah, so you're the infamous Harry." A smirk formed on Amara's lips.
"Excuse me?" My brows furrowed at her words.
"Oh, I just know how much Ren here, talks about y—" she was interrupted by Serenity.
And there she goes again with that infuriating habit of interrupting.
"Anyway, this is —"
"Rennie, my girl, sorry I'm late." A very familiar English voice spoke behind me.
Are you fucking kidding me?
"Riv. You're late," she replied sternly.
"Shut up, Ren. It's not like you're ever early," Amara snorted.
"Dude, point taken," she replied with a laugh, then looked at me. "But hey, Harry here knows that I'm never late."
"I beg to differ." I bit the corner of my lips, holding in a laugh.
"Is no one on my side?"
"No," they all answered at the same time, which only made her scoff loudly. She rested her cheek in her right palm, in clear defeat. The sight of that caused me to snicker silently.
"It's nice to see you again, mate," River said, grabbing another chair from a nearby table, taking a seat, then turned to Serenity to speak again, "You ordered my drink, 'ow sweet of you."
I'm not your mate, mate.
"Um, you too." I don't think I've ever sounded more pathetic in my life. I didn't want all of them thinking I was a complete prick — even though I was.
And then there were times when I wasn't.
"Why are you standing, H? Sit down," Serenity spoke, gesturing to the chair in front of me. I realised I was the only one left standing and took a seat.
Cora came by to give me the coffee and muffin that I ordered just moments earlier. For some strange reason, my drink was in a paper cup, rather than a porcelain mug like the others.
I grasped ahold of it and took a sip, only to quickly realise it wasn't the coffee I ordered — it was a London Fog. My gaze swiftly went to Serenity, who was already watching me, a sly grin on her face. That's what the look she gave Cora for was.
How did she even know I liked it? Fuck. I couldn't ask for another drink now. She cornered me.
She keeps fucking doing that.
"Sorry, I didn't catch your name," I spoke out randomly, wanting to know who the other man was.
"Milo," he replied, then rubbed his chin. "Hey, you're Harry Styles, yeah? CEO of Urban Corp.?"
"That'd be me."
"I worked for Pemberton a couple years back. It was a work-study program."
"Intern?"
"Basically. They offered me a full-time position, but it's my home here, couldn't stay away from the people I love," he said, looking at Serenity and it only made my jaw clench.
"You're such a sap, I swear." She laughed.
"Who'd you work with?"
"I shadowed Lionel Kingsley."
This fucker didn't work in the mailroom. He was close to working with Oliver.
"So you've invested Ren's studio. I give you props for being able to handle her." He chuckled and I was able to hold in my amused expression at his words.
"Thanks. She's a handful, that's for sure."
"Sounds like everyone's against me today." A pout formed on her lips.
And something about that was tempting.
Tempting for what, though? I honestly didn't know.
"You're all cruel. All of you."
"Rennie, don't be upset, we all love you." The Nile reached over to place his arm on her shoulder. "That's why we do it."
Don't. Touch. Her.
When she pushed his hand away, absentmindedly, a smirk formed on my lips.
Why?
"So why are you here? Ren told us Iris couldn't make it."
"We pushed back our meeting so that we could all get together."
"Hey, Milo, how's Charlie? I haven't spoken to him in a while. I miss that punk."
Would she ever miss me?
What the fuck? Stop.
"Talked to him yesterday. He's between practice and training. Complaining a lot, so basically, nothing's new."
"Training for what?" I surprised myself by asking the curiosity in my head. I didn't plan on actually having a conversation with them but more or less to observe.
"He's a professional hockey player. Full of himself, but has a great heart," Serenity answered.
"It'll be great to tell him that you think he's full of himself," her friend said.
"We all know he is."
"I wouldn't know, never met him," River commented.
"Ah well, it's true. Dramatic little shit," Amara said with a laugh.
"Hey, now, that's my brother you're talking about."
Brother? Thank God.
"So?"
"Okay, never mind. It is true." She groaned with a laugh.
The chat between them continued, talking about random things, and I found out more things about them.
Apparently, Charlie played for Team Canada in the Olympics, which was honestly fucking impressive. The thing was, I didn't understand the sport of hockey for shit. That resulted in Serenity and Milo inviting me with them to watch him play when his next game was back here in Vancouver. I didn't want to third-wheel, but I couldn't decline — at least, not now.
Amara owned a fashion boutique not far from here, which was interesting. I knew fashion and clothing very well. I'd always been in the world since I was young, knowing everything and anything about it; but I was never bold with it — and didn't plan to be. Colours were meaningless, and I was a minimalist. The primary designer I went to, knew exactly what I liked and wanted. That was it.
And only it.
"So, Harry, what do you do for fun?"
What is this? 20 Questions?
"Business dinners," Serenity answered instead of me.
"Those are a thing?" Amara questioned, her lips quirked upwards.
"Yeah, they are," Milo replied to her.
I can answer for myself, you fucker.
"Sounds fun."
"About a good ninety-nine per cent of them, aren't," I said, my brows furrowed slightly, and I pursed my lips. Bringing the cup up to my mouth, I took another sip, focusing on the flavour. It was hard to really look anyone in the eye at this moment.
If only I could go out to dinner for other reasons.
Those don't exist.
And I began to feel vulnerable.
Surrounded by three individuals who knew nothing about me — and one, who I was involuntarily letting walls down. Some, however, they were hidden away in a cage, down to the deepest part of my heart. It was a place that I promised myself no one would ever get to.
And I planned to keep that promise.
Everyone else breaks them.
It was the only promise that I would never break — because it was to me.
When I finally managed to look back up, three of them were conversing in a conversation, but sapphire gems, her sole focus was on me — studying me. I'd done the same thing multiple times before, but we were always alone, never in the middle of a group of people.
Why was I so interesting to her? Sure I was cocky and arrogant, a couple of qualities certain women liked — and I stayed away from those. But Serenity, she seemed to see through that, still acknowledging it, though.
I have pissed her off on several accounts, but she's never once stayed quiet. Since day one, she's been talking back to me and giving me reasons to continue being an asshole to her. Maybe, one day, hoping she'd take it as a hint and leave me alone.
I understood that we just had business arrangement and deal, but she seemed to want more. It's like she wanted to open me up — get me to crack open.
I wasn't a shell that was keeping a treasured pearl safe.
Hell, I was the single shell already broken, that was left alone mixed with muted relatives, and rusted bottle caps never found at the bottom of the ocean floor.
The way she looked at me, though, made it seem like I was special — and that there was so much more to me that I even knew.
Which was bullshit.
There wasn't anything more to me other than a rough exterior and a cold heart.
Harry many years ago, though, there might have been more.
"Who do you think is going to win this staring contest?"
"My money's on Rennie."
"Mine's on Styles. Do you see the way he's looking at her?"
With those words, I blinked, breaking myself out of whatever trance I was in. Serenity did the same thing but showed a small smile, not embarrassed that we were just caught openly staring at each other among her friends — and boyfriend.
Swiftly, I pulled out my phone from my inside jacket pocket and pretended that I had to leave for work. I needed to get out of here.
"I have to go. Work," I spoke suddenly, standing up from my chair. The group seemed taken back by my swift movement.
"Alright. No worries. It was nice meeting you, even though we didn't have too much of a chance to talk," Milo said, gazing at me intently.
"Right, then."
"Hope to see you around more, Harry," Amara's voice was soft, honest, and sincere.
"Good night," I bid them farewell, turned around, and headed straight out of the café.
Reaching my car, I could feel my chest heave, unsure what was happening — or the cause of it. My hands balled in fists, turning white from the tension, feeling my fingernails dig deep into my skin. I leaned forward, pressing them against the car, trying to catch my breath, and wrap my head around everything.
It was too much. Unguarded. Meeting people. Danger. Opening up. River. Milo. Amara. Serenity. River. Amara. Milo. Serenity.
Serenity.
I heard footsteps hastening towards me, but her familiar voice echoed in my ears first, "Harry!"
Slowly, I felt the tightness in my muscles begin to loosen. My breaths were still loud, however softening as I noticed that she stood right behind me.
"Are you okay?" There was worry evident in her tone.
I felt the softest touch of her hand press between my shoulder blades. They relaxed because of the feeling of her against my covered skin.
"It's okay, you're alright. You're safe."
Her words were familiar — my own. The same I told her when she was about to have a panic attack in the lift.
A minute passed and neither one of us not moved from our same position; that was until her hand slid down my back and parted from my body. It was the first time she initiated any physical contact between us, and for some strange reason, I already missed her touch.
Slowly, I turned around to see the smallest smile on her face, and it was enough to make my entire body relax and let my heartbeat back to normal.
"Why are you out here?" I asked, slightly harsher than I intended on. She didn't flinch or react like how I imagined she would.
"You forgot your tea and muffin," she said softly, holding up the two items in her left hand, then passed them to me.
"Oh, right."
"And because I wanted to ask if we bored you that much," she hesitantly added.
"What are you talking about?"
"Sudden, urgent phone emergency translates to, 'I need to leave because your presence is boring me to death.'" Her simple interpretation was purely truthful, as she let out a sad chuckle. "I've experienced a lot of those. So it's not exactly new to me."
After knowing Serenity, how could anyone want to leave her presence? She was addicting and simply a breath of fresh air.
"I'm sorry to hear that. They're idiots," I honestly spoke my feelings.
"Like you?" I could hear the teasing tone in her voice.
No doubt this woman was clever and so incredibly witty.
"Touché," I said, letting out the smallest chuckle. "But it was a bit too much for me. I've never really sat with a lot of people before."
"You probably sit in conferences filled with like thirty people and go to events with over a hundred. You call sitting with me, Riv, Milo, and Mars a lot?"
"That's different. I felt... I spoke firmly, then trailed off. Judged. "...I just wasn't comfortable."
"I understand."
"Have you and your boyfriend been together long?" I asked and wanted to physically slam my head against a brick wall.
Why the fuck would you randomly ask that?
"Boyfriend? I told you Riv and I aren't — Wait, you think that —" she stopped and looked at me with wide eyes, then burst out in the loudest laughter I've ever heard from her. Her hand came up to her chest, and her eyes filled with joyful tears. "You mean Milo?" Once I nodded hesitantly, she continued her letting out more delightful sounds. "That's my brother!"
Brother?
Well shit.
"I told you I had two! You really need to listen more, Mr Styles. Might need to get those ears checked out," she said, wiping her tears.
"How was I supposed to know? No one mentioned it," I tried to defend myself.
"We look incredibly like. We're practically twins, only he's two years older," she explained, a grin was wide on her face.
"I see."
"I thought you had a sly eye, apparently not." Her words entertained herself, starting to laugh once more.
"You're irritating me."
No, you're not.
"Alright, fine. I'll stop. Just to confirm again, I have two brothers. Charlie, the hockey player, and Milo, who's in business. Got it?"
"Noted."
"You know, if you Googled me, you probably would have known that. You should Google more often."
"I'm not you."
"Oh right, you're not as thorough as I am," she continued to tease me.
"I'm a —"
"Multimillionaire and CEO of Urban Corp., a very successful company known worldwide. Yes, I know, Harry. You'd be a good actor, you memorised a great script. You seem pretty ready for immediate screen production."
"Bloody fucking hell," I muttered, letting out a deep breath, as I looked down at the ground.
"You feeling better?" she asked, after a moment of silence. I met her gaze, with a small smile tugging at her lips.
She distracted me.
No one has ever done that before.
I always got lost in my thoughts, but she, she knew another technique.
Fuck, Serenity was incredible.
"Yeah, thank you."
"I'm glad I could help," she replied softly.
"I should get going."
"Yeah, you should probably get back to work." Her words had a light vibe to them, still in a teasing tone.
"Probably."
"Or you could take a break and do something else, like maybe eat ice cream."
"It's been years since I've had any," I spoke, and she looked at me like I was mental.
Maybe I was.
"You've seriously got to get out more." A deep sigh escaped her chest, shaking her head. "What was your favourite flavour?"
I bit the corner of my bottom lip, thinking back to a specific part of my past — though, only targeting the part she asked about. "Vanilla or chocolate."
"Noted. Well, get going, H. Enjoy that blueberry muffin, eh? You'll never want anything else again. Except for maybe my dad's. He makes some killer muffins."
"I'll let you know what I think of it."
"You better." She pointed her finger at me, narrowing her blue eyes at me. "I should get back inside. Possibly before they think I got abducted by an alien or something. Get back to work or home or wherever safe. Okay."
And a single nod of my head, I watched as she walked back in the café, leaving me with my thoughts. Getting back in my car, I placed the tea in the cup holder and the muffin on the passenger's seat.
I took off back to the big city, driving alone in silence, the only sound coming from the lives of the strangers surrounding me. I bet some were having fun, some wanted to desperately get out of the insane traffic, and some just wanted to be within the hustle and bustle and enjoy life wherever they were.
Parking into the third empty spot I had, I realised that I didn't go back to the office. I went home on a Thursday evening, it only being nine-thirty. It was something entirely unlike me.
Slowly, I turned towards the dessert placed in the seat next to me. I grabbed ahold of the paper bag, removing the muffin from its confinement. Taking my time, I let my teeth sink into the baked good, chewing it slow as I savoured the rich flavour it held. Once it reached down to the pit of my stomach, I knew that her words weren't a lie.
I couldn't stop myself when I pulled out my phone, opened my messages app, selecting a particular woman's name. I began to type.
Serenity Marie Hayes
I made it home.
And you were right. It was delicious. Tell Cora thank you again.
Goodnight, Serenity.
And just as I was going to place my mobile back where it was, it vibrated in my hand.
Will do.
I'm glad you got home okay.
And if you ever need to feel safe, I'm only a message away.
Goodnight, Harry.
