Hiii bestiesss!
I hope you're well! This chapter was supposed to be up this weekend, but I got busy and it took longer than expected to finish/edit. 11K words.
Anyway, grab some snacks because the longest chapter and it ain't one to take a quick read through. It's also another dual POV chapter. I'm excited for this update. *smirks*
Without further ado, I hope you enjoy this one, my darling rosy tulips 🌷

Serenity.
The past three weeks have been absolute bliss.
Everything was the most ideal form of perfection.
After we left my parents' place, it all felt like it just fell into place.
Like my dad promised Harry, he did give him a batch of those blueberry muffins he loves so much. He also wrote down the recipe, Harry being the first person other than our immediate family. I laughed when my Englishman told him that he'd probably end up burning down my kitchen if he tried baking them. My amused father just grinned and replied saying that he'd give him a personal one-on-one teaching lesson one day.
As for that 'one day,' Harry took it quickly as in ASAP when he booked off some free time, all so he could pop over to see him and have that lesson.
When I got home from the studio, Harry was waiting for me with a basket of perfect blueberry muffins — baked only by him.
He called himself 'Baker Harry' for the rest of the day. My pretty man was so proud of himself and excited to share his success with me — by eating them.
I've seen the look of pride on his face countless times, but this almost matched when he took me to see his flower garden.
It was such a beautiful sight, and nothing could stop me from kissing him because of it.
He looked so much better with his appearance and back to wearing brighter colours — even if it was practically winter.
Harry said, "Just because it's gloomy outside, doesn't mean we have to look the same."
There was no lies in his words.
I also did love seeing him in red or deeper burgundies. The rainbow, and the colours in between, were in his closet. It was amazing to see that he was comfortable enough to wear every hue inside without feeling his confidence diminish; because, in all honesty, it only made him better.
It was an obvious thing that he'd still be an eye-catcher whenever he walked into any room. His employees would have their jaws dropped, potential clients and investors thought he might've been down with something. As for me, I loved his flamboyant self.
Things tremendously changed regarding Harry's work because he was doing unbelievable. The ideas he was coming up with for future projects were mind-blowing. Decisions were made quickly and in complete accuracy. He always double-checked things himself, just in case it would lead to a downfall; he wanted to make sure not to invest in the rotten apples from the business tree.
The BOD was thrilled and surprised with how he had such a quick switch within him. He went from almost being removed from his position and then possibly fired to increasing the company's net worth to over a solid million within such a short amount of time.
It was remarkable.
We've spent time together between my apartment and his condo. As much as he loved staying with me, he told me that he wanted me to be at his a few times.
"Just whenever I have to be alone here for whatever reason, I love having your scent around. Makes me feel better."
Harry's honesty was positively adorable, his cheeks always blushed in crimson when he told me his thoughts.
Of course, I obliged and made sure to bring a bit more of my things to settle amongst his.
There was something, though, that wasn't brought up since we got back together.
Harry's birthday.
It was never celebrated, nor was it something that he talked about.
But I remembered it all the time since his gifts were still hiding in my closets, and wrapped. I didn't want to wait until Christmas to give them to him — that wouldn't be fair. He deserved more than two for another very special day.
He'd never celebrated Christmas, or according to the first time we texted each other, he'd said: I don't do Christmas.
I was appalled and simply shocked that day. Never had I met anyone in my life that didn't have that day as the most exciting day in the whole year for them.
However, after getting to know Harry and finding out more about his past, it only made sense why he avoided it — it's all he could do.
When he was home for the holiday break, his family held a grand Christmas ball, but he spent a short time there before sneaking back to his room.
Decorations filled every part of his house, but none of it meant anything to him. Even the tree wasn't hand-selected, it was fake. I mean, who in their right mind gets an artificial Christmas tree? Everything was different for me — especially since I lived in BC. There were dozens of farms that everyone could go to and pick out the perfect fir tree.
But there was still a month away for that, and I didn't want to bring it up until later. I wanted to give Harry so much, and not necessarily in gifts, but in experiences. Only time could bring us that.
It was time that I surprised him with the gifts, though. I couldn't keep them hidden forever.
And I was dying to see his reaction towards them. Of course, that's if he liked them to begin with.
I stopped by my parent's place while Harry was at work so I can grab the item I had stashed there.
The second I stepped back into my apartment, I took a look around and saw how things had changed since Harry semi-moved in. The little wardrobe that he had was filled up with his clothes and personal items, that I wished I could get another one, but I didn't have the space.
There wasn't much décor other than some plants from his place — so he brought one. The rest of what he loved were the things I had in mine.
And after a week after our reconciliation, I gave Harry a key to my apartment so he didn't have to knock every time to get in. In the past, we came home together or he'd just come by when I was home; but now, he could come here without ever having to ask to do so.
I could see the look in his eyes when I gave it to him. It was the first step for me to show him that I was on the road to trusting him again. I already knew the code to his condo from before, but a physical key was different and incomparable to him.
He was so happy, though.
One night, I regretted giving him the key; it was when he told me he would be out of town for four days but ended up coming home a day earlier. He scared the bejeezus out of me when I was in bed and suddenly felt a large body land atop mine.
Because of his stunt, he didn't get any kissy that night.
Harry just wanted to surprise me, but that wasn't the word I'd use for what he did. Not when it was past midnight, and I was in a deep sleep.
His way of apologising was trapping me in the bathroom with him, not letting me leave until I forgave him. After some resistance and a lovestruck heart, I quickly gave in.
But then I called him princess, and he chased after me into the bedroom while I laughed loudly.
I loved to see Harry so playful and carefree. He deserved the world and happiness, and I was just thankful I could be a part of that for him.
As busy as he's been the past week, though, he's still managed to come home in a decent mood. He tried as best not to bring his work with him, but there wasn't anything he could do about it. Harry wasn't just an employee, he was the CEO of one of the biggest companies in Canada. So it wasn't really a walk in the park for him.
I understood that.
So when he arrived a little later past seven, I had dinner prepared and my surprises ready for him. He gave me a kiss hello, the exhaustion clear as day on his face, mentioning that he just wanted to take a little longer of a hot shower to soothe his muscles.
With a grab for a few things necessary, he entered the bathroom, shutting the door behind him.
It was then that I had minimal time to get things ready. I called up Amara to get Luna to stay with her for the night. I poured the soup and moved the courses into fancier bowls and dishes. I lit some candles for ambiance and turned on my essential oil diffuser to a scent that Harry liked.
The only thing that didn't change was the lounge clothes I was wearing. I didn't want to make Harry uncomfortable by making it too elaborate. In the end, it was just us.
Harry emerged from the bathroom, changed and clean as he ruffled his pretty hair in a towel then tossed it in the basket.
His focus then caught on as he looked around the space, observing everything that I'd put together.
"Candles? Dimmed light?"
I just hoped that the romance that lingered in the air wouldn't go into a downward spiral. Harry's never had it fancy like this before.
"What is this, baby?" With a raised brow, he questioned in a curious tone.
"Well, I figured it's about time we celebrate your birthday," I spoke softly, a blush on my cheeks.
"My birthday? That was weeks ago, Essie. We don't have to do that," Harry replied, walking closer to me, and wrapped his arms around my waist. He placed his forehead against mine, gently brushing our noses together. "Plus, the best gift I've ever had — well, only gift really — is your love. I got you back, petal. It's all I ever wanted."
Rolling my lips together, I smiled up at him. "I know. But I want to do more. I mean, I was going to take you out and —"
"Es, I don't want that. If you want to celebrate, what you have right here is perfect. Just want to be with you."
"I figured you'd say that, so this is why this is a compromise. It's just us alone here," I said, grabbing hold of his hands from around me, and tugged on them to the small dinner table. "Come on. First, I made your favourites."
And his eyes lit up like a five-year-old on his birthday when he saw cake — well, in a way, it was similar.
Chicken noodle soup, chicken fettuccine, chardonnay, and blueberry muffins.
Once his gaze settled on the pot, I could see his mouth watering at the sight. Go figure, it was the other thing he found himself hungry for.
But that was still too soon.
I gained more trust from Harry over these weeks, but I still wasn't ready. I wanted to be, and one might say that I was exaggerating or letting it continue for too long without being intimate, but it was just hard for me.
I trusted Harry with my life, but it was just difficult for the rest of my body. Maybe it was the vulnerability? I'm not sure.
"This smells so fucking good. You outdid yourself, my love."
"I mean, it's not much. Just some pasta, soup, and muffins."
"Still so much better than I could ever do," he said with a laugh. "I'm starving."
"Let's eat then." I smiled.
During our meal, we chatted about our days. There wasn't much to mine, but Harry went on about an excellent investment he made and how he shut down rumours of how he was cheating through his work. When it came to whoever that was, he kicked them out of his office — kindly, of course.
I still didn't know Harry's definition of 'kindly,' and I wasn't sure if I wanted to know. But then again, I learned how he was in angry mode, so this had to be better — at least, I hoped so.
We drank some wine, but only a glass with the food wasn't too fond of it. I just thought it would be nice in regards to 'setting the mood' for this evening. Harry's whiskey neat was his preferred drink, only when he was at work or stressed.
He hasn't made a glass of that in my apartment yet.
I was thankful to know he never felt anxious or in any lousy state around me.
"Thank you, baby," he said, wiping his mouth with the napkin. "Dishes are on me."
"Not a chance, Tiger. It's on both of us." I grinned. "You wash, I'll dry."
"Deal."
"Now, those are the deals I love making together." Biting my lip, I let out a small laugh, and he chuckled.
"Noted," he smiled, placing a quick peck on my lips.
Clearing the table, we stood side-by-side washing the plates, him nudging me every once in a while. He dabbed some soap on my nose with a grin, and I narrowed my eyes at him. So I dipped my finger on the sponge and did the same to him. Thankfully, it didn't lead to a soapy water fight because we didn't want to clean up something else.
I still had gifts to give, and I didn't want it to be in the middle of the night.
As much as I loved Harry, I still needed my beauty sleep.
When I gave him a muffin, I tucked a lit birthday candle in the centre, telling him to make a wish. The way his eyes sparkled once more, it warmed my heart. It truly was the first time he was experiencing something like this. He closed his eyes with a smile, then blew out the flame.
I asked what he wished for, but he just grinned, remaining silent. I huffed, but let it go.
We munched on our desserts when we made it to the sofa, enjoying the rich and fluffy flavour.
And Harry, well, he moaned — at every, single, bite.
That man was obsessed with those muffins. His eyes would roll back, shutting as he indulged in the delicious treat.
He was incredibly theatrical with his actions, and there was no doubt that it affected me.
Harry was also the biggest tease, so it was a double purpose for him.
We cuddled a little bit more on the couch, popped some corn, and decided on watching a movie. However, the entire time I was antsy and so anxious about giving Harry gifts. He didn't know that I'd gotten him anything, so he thought it was just a dinner and loads of affection while spending time together.
I mean, technically, that was part of it.
Harry kept his view on the television while I had mine on him. We'd meet eyes every once in a while, and I'd blush as he smiled. He'd throw some popcorn at me and whisper, "Watch the movie, E."
"I am."
"Liar."
It was up until halfway where he took the remote from my hand, paused the film, and pinned my wrists together. A sly grin was on his lips as his eyes roamed around my face, studying it.
"Alright, spit it out."
"Spit what out?"
"Whatever it is that you're hiding. I know that look in your eyes, Essie. You're keeping something from me. So come on."
And when I shook my head, he raised his brow with a smirk. "Is that so, darling? You're not keeping anything from me."
"Nope."
"Alright." He shrugged, letting go of my wrists.
I thought I was free, up until he pushed me back against the couch and tickled me.
But it wasn't just a normal, light, fun bit of tickling — he was relentless. Laughs were choked up as I struggled for air. Harry let out boisterous amounts of chuckles of amusement as his hands attacked my body.
The bastard was enjoying it.
"Stop! Stop!" I pleaded within choked breaths, and he finally gave in. As I calmed down, I side-eyed him only to see that innocent grin tugging at his lips. "This your only way to get me to talk, isn't it? Force its way through attacking me to death?"
"Don't exaggerate, sweetheart. It was just some harmless fun."
"Yeah, for you, it is," I huffed.
"So, what is it?" Harry asked again, softly, yet disregarding my statement.
Harry pulled me back to sit up, one hand caressing my back as I caught my breath. His touch was smooth on mine, and it made me look up to meet his eyes. They were eager, caring, honest, and loving.
"You know you can tell me anything, love," he spoke quietly.
"I just — I feel bad."
"What? For not celebrating my birthday? I don't care if it's not on the same day, my love. I already told you how I feel about it. Besides, to me, it's just a regular day. It always was, so there wasn't really anything different. The dinner was perfect for me and more than enough."
"I know that. It's also why I wished I could properly give you something worth remembering. Good memories on that specific day."
"Okay, fine," he paused. Reaching for his phone, I watched as he went through it doing who knows what. Once he finished, he held the device up so I could see the screen. A picture of me was his lock screen, and it put a smile on my face. But there was something different. Everything was the same except for one thing.
The date changed.
Monday, November 2
"Y-you —"
"It's my birthday, Essie. Gonna give me a kissy? Think I deserve one, don't you think?" He flashed a cheeky smile.
Letting out a soft laugh, I grinned. "Harry Styles, you are one very smooth man."
"It's part of my charm, sweetheart."
"I love that charm of yours," I grinned, before I lifted my leg over to straddle him. "Gonna give you a little kissy."
"Based on how you're sitting, doesn't seem like a little."
"Believe whatever you want, Styles."
"Gimme."
"Gimme gimme, never gets, don't you know your manners yet?"
"Shut up, Serenity," he said right before pulling my body flush against him, kissing me passionately.
His lips folded against mine in harmony. Perfectly addicting, captivating, enamouring. All I wanted to do was stay here forever with Harry, having him hold me pressed together, a sliver of a gap between us.
Hands all over each other, desperate to keep our touch connected in every possible way. My fingers tightly curled in his hair, down his neck, and back up. His placed on my waist, my hips, and back up underneath my sweater to feel my bare skin.
Deprived and longing for the rawest connection we shared together, peaking the ultimate form of pleasure we loved so much.
Swaying and rocking together with desperate urgency with our actions, never parting from one another — nor trying to. It was the closest thing we could gift a mutual gift without exposing ourselves in our needy state.
Our clothes remained a barrier, each caught up in our shared moment, appreciating every part about us. Whispering sweet and filthy nothings in my ears and mouth, letting each word affect both of us greatly. The contrast of them was with praise. and ultimate belittling towards me was a secret that became evident only to Harry.
The soft whimpers, whines, and sobs escaped both of us, becoming an award-winning musical soundtrack that only we could hear. Erotic sublimity. The title so exclusive and personal, remaining forever in the privacy of the four walls surrounding us.
Harry took advantage of that by using them to bring me to the highest point of ecstasy. He loved doing it every intimate time between us — once, twice, and sometimes countless. Pleasing me was mutual for him and he couldn't get enough of it.
He thrived on it, and the control he had over me. It only pushed him past the tipping point of sensual pleasure keeping him going longer than he's ever done. His hands forced me down, achingly close to him, using the pressure of my body to carry on further with his blissful sensation.
Our focus strained, struggling to maintain eye contact being so caught up in pleasure. Flush cheeks, swollen lips parted, and glistening skin from the devoted effort. Each so entranced by the look of how we were able to peak the limit of lust at its utmost finest state.
We were mesmerised by the adoration and love we shared, feeling way past content knowing what we could do.
Sparkly green eyes returned to me as he fluttered them open, contrasting to the darkest black abyss they were just prior. Both of our glasses were foggy and smudged from our passionate deed.
Slowly, I pulled his off his face, mine following, and placed them on the seat cushion beside us. My lips went to put them upon his once more, feeling the warmth and love from such a delicate kiss. His eyes flickered between mine, then all over my face before softly rubbing his nose against mine.
"When you'll let me. When we're ready," Harry whispered, almost inaudibly as we caught our breaths.
I loved that he knew our limits.
That release was long overdue, and we cherished this one immensely.
"Essie power," I whispered.
Realising what he'd just done, he chuckled against my lips, pressing them once more to mine.
"That's a fucking fact. My Essie owns me."
The movie at this point was long forgotten, and another had started. We were both so caught up with each other, time became nonexistent since our sole focus was on the person we each loved.
I was so thankful that I told Amara to watch Luna for the night. Poor girl didn't deserve to be scarred.
We were both a filthy mess, and it took us a little while to settle comfortably back on the couch.
I cleaned up quickly, and he went to freshen up in the bathroom; and when he emerged again, I could feel my heart pound.
His hair was wet, droplets dripping down his freshly worn sweater, a pair of sweatpants, and socks. Or we could simply say that I, too, was in a similar state. I smiled at the sight of him, told him to sit back on the couch, then surprised him by telling him to close his eyes.
Ones that were beautifully shown behind his glasses.
I loved them.
I loved him.
Going into my bedroom, I pulled out one of the gifts to bring outside, leaving the other wait just a short bit longer.
Sitting back next to him, present in hand, I spoke softly, "Okay, you can open your eyes."
When I could see my favourite Antares star again, his emerald gems looked down to see the box in my hand. A brow raised as he glanced at it, then back up to my eyes.
"What is this?" he asked.
"I — um, I got you a gift for your birthday. I was going to give it to you, but that didn't work out. So, yeah..." I trailed off quietly. "...here."
Harry slowly took it from my hand with a deep breath, observing the tulip-covered wrapping paper. A small laugh escaped his lips at that. "Love the paper."
"The second I saw it, I just had to buy it," I said bashfully, "Actually got it back sometime in summer. It was on clearance from spring. I figured it might come in handy eventually."
"Softie," he mumbled with a grin, but then it faded.
My brows furrowed at his action.
"You okay, handsome?"
"It's just, no one's ever got me a gift before."
And that's when my heart broke.
But before I could say anything else, he spoke again; rather, he let out a short, sad laugh.
"Tommy did, though. He got lots of them." His voice cracked. "Was I not good enough?"
"Harry, you are more than good enough." I firmly said, grasping hold of his hands. His gaze kept on his lap, refusing to look at me.
So I gently curled a finger under his chin so he could.
"Baby, look at me," I spoke softly, and when he did, I felt like crying.
His beautiful, vibrant green eyes were dull, filled with rejection and sorrow. Glossy with tears, just begging to fall. My tiger couldn't jump the fire of desolation within him towards his family and the way he was treated by them.
He didn't deserve that pain.
And when one, single droplet cascaded down his cheek, I brushed it away with a gentle swipe of my thumb.
"They don't deserve you. None of them do. I know you and Tommy were born on the same day, but that doesn't mean a thing."
"Es—"
"No, Harry. I know what you're going to say. You're going to tell me that you should be cared about too, which I'm not telling you that those feelings aren't valid because they are. It's okay to be upset with them for treating you the way they did, but those days are over. They're all idiots. They don't know how smart, kind, unique, caring, and loving you are. They don't know the beautiful soul you have, and they don't deserve the pleasure of knowing you.
"I can't say I understand how you feel because I never lived your life. But what I can tell you is that it happened, and so much has changed," I spoke, "Baby, you are loved by so many people. You're loved by my friends and my family, and most importantly, by me. I love you, and I'm lucky to have gotten to know you."
"I'm the one that's lucky, Essie."
"Not true." I shook my head. "Definitely not true."
Pushing back some hair from his forehead, I softly trailed my fingertips along his face and down to grasp his hand again.
"If they don't want you in their life, nor do they care, they can just go drive themselves into a bus with one of them fancy cars they own. You, Harry Styles, are everything to me. Utterly, wholly, and absolutely everything. I'm your family."
"I can't express how much you mean to me, Serenity. You are more than enough for me. Like you, you're everything to me. I love you, Essie. My sweet, sweet girl."
"I love you, Tiger. My pretty, pretty, man."
He sniffled slightly, rubbing his hands against his eyes, and let out a deep sigh.
And he looked at me with a smile, then down at the gift.
"So, can I open it?"
"I mean, you don't have to. You can just use it as decoration without ever finding out what's hidden beneath it," I suggested with sarcasm.
Harry shook his head at my comment and carefully unwrapped the present. I'd never seen anyone do that before; usually, they'd just rip it open, eager to know what it was. The paper was the least of their concern.
"Gonna keep that, too," he said, answering my thoughts.
Once his fingers tugged at the tape, delicate to make sure it wouldn't tear, he gasped as he saw the item.
"Th-this is a—"
A musical ballerina jewelry box.
"I know it's small and a little girly, but I thought you might like it. And work for you."
The delicate designs on it were of both our favourite colours in floral patterns. The wood was white, and it reminded me a bit of his garden.
"I saw it at Mars' shop. She sometimes gets a few knickknacks and things like that from vintage shops. Some she sells, others she keeps. She had this one for sale, so I bought it from her. She said that I didn't have to pay her, but I wanted to buy something for you, not just take it," I rambled. "Anyway, I hope you like it."
His fingers gently grazed over the designs and simply comprehending everything — and what was in his hands.
Slowly, he lifted the lid, a tiny ballerina springing up as soft piano music played simultaneously. The little figurine, dress painted red, spun around on the spring, moving with the solo instrumental. The reflection of the dancer's body was seen against the mirror above her.
The interior, smooth black velvet, ready to keep safe any personal belongings placed inside.
I could tell that the music caught his attention quickly, but he didn't comment on it. Instead, he pointed at the ballerina with a small smile and said, "It's you. My little sugarplum fairy."
"I guess. Maybe, sorta," I let out a slight laugh. Pushing some stray hair back behind my ear, I took my bottom lip between my teeth as I glanced back up at Harry.
"This song," he paused, "You had this song playing the morning after you took care of me. I know it."
My brows furrowed as I recalled the memory. "You do?"
"Yeah. I played it when I was younger. Was one of my favourites actually. One of the pieces I enjoyed playing on piano. I had fun playing around with it in different keys, adding my own touch to it," he spoke with a soft smile, looking down at the gift. "Was one of my best memories."
I could hear the reminiscent tone in his voice, the joy seeping through his words.
Glancing back at me, his cheeks were rosy, and lips were curled upwards in delight. "It's not girly, baby."
"I mean, would anyone think Mr CEO would carry something like this around in their suitcase?"
"No," he said, shaking his head. "But would anyone even think Mr CEO would also have a secret love for flowers and a garden on their roof?"
"Touché."
"But I don't like it, darling," he spoke, "I love it."
"I figured that you can put your cufflinks, rings, and watch. You know, when you're travelling. I know you sometimes can misplace them," I said in a soft tone. "Just thought it would be nice so you can remember me, too."
"It's exactly what I was going to use it for. Thank you, Essie. And you know that I can never forget you. Love you too much to do that."
That smile on Harry's face was absolutely priceless. Dimples dug deep in his cheeks, showing utter honesty. Everything about it was shine-worthy, a runway model, and deserved to be hung up in a famous museum. The value of his happiness could never have a price on it — it was far too valuable.
"I feel bad that I didn't get you anything," he spoke, and I burst out into laughter.
And he just looked at me in utter confusion.
"Harry, it's your birthday, not mine! You can get me one when it is mine," I explained, and he finally came to that realisation with a soft "oh." Reaching up, I cupped his cheek and said, "Yeah, you know mine, right? March 1st? Back in the year ol' 95, when I flushed out of my mother's womb.
That's when he let out a belly aching laugh, ending it with a shit-eating grin.
"It's not a date I can forget, sweetheart. Most important day of my life."
"Please don't say something cheesy like 'it's because it was the day I was born, so you can love me, and all that,'" I whined.
"Nope."
"Thank God."
"I didn't have to say it. You did." He smirked.
Oh, he was good.
"You're smooth, Styles. I'll tell you that." I laughed.
"Thank you again, my love," he said, placing the gift upon my coffee table, the tulip wrapping paper folded neatly underneath. "Want to finish the mov— wait. Oh, shit. It finished. Okay then, maybe we can find another one?"
"I wasn't done."
"With what?" His confused brows were absolutely adorable tonight.
"I have another gift. Had to keep this one stashed at my parents' place. Close your eyes," I firmly stated.
"Love, you didn't have —"
"Close them," I interrupted, and with a deep sigh, he did as told.
Quickly, I got up from my spot and headed back into my bedroom to grab the second item from the closet. Struggling slightly, I tried as best I could to not bump into any furniture; I didn't want to spoil the surprise. This gift was a hard one to wrap, but in all honesty, it didn't even need it — I just wanted to use more of the pretty paper.
Just as I stood in the right spot, I spoke up, "Open."
And the second he did, the expression was priceless.
Harry's jaw dropped, a choked breath escaped his lips, and those beautiful green eyes I loved so much filled with tears. He immediately knew what it was without even unwrapping it.
The gift was another vintage item, but I made sure to take it to a place to double-check it was in good condition. Thankfully, the man who helped me was kind enough to polish it up, change the strings, and tune it.
A hand-made cello.
"W-what is — baby, I — th-this — I can't —"
Not waiting for him to unwrap it, I did the honour for him because of his stunned state. Slowly, I ripped the paper and revealed the instrument in its ultimate glory.
Walking towards him, I sat down and carefully placed it upon our laps.
His fingers were shaky as they gently skimmed over the pristine spruce wood. The lower and upper bout, the strings along the fingerboard, up the neck, the pegs, and the scroll. Stunning, pretty hair shook in disbelief at the sight — at the feeling of what he touched.
He couldn't believe his eyes, closing and flickering them back to see that this was reality and not a dream.
"I — I can't believe this," he whispered, "Haven't even touched one in years."
"Was walking by another antique shop and saw it through the window. It was near the back. The woman wanted to rip me off, and I got it —"
"Baby, this is a fucking expensive cello. It's straight-grained spruce, the best wood to make it. I mean, how did — shit, um —"
"How'd I afford it?" I asked, and he looked at me, nodding shyly.
He thought I'd get offended by the question, but it was true. There was no way I could afford it as a brand new decent cello at the original price — I checked.
"Yeah."
"I never planned on getting it actually. I didn't just want to get you the jewelry box and I wanted something more, but I couldn't think of anything else. I just happened to walk by the store and found it. It was more than I could afford, even for a place like that. I asked my landlord if I could get an extension on my rent until next month so I could get it. Didn't want to use the money that you paid me from the whole deal and whatnot. Anyway, I waited until after I got the money from my actual clients and not from you," I explained softly, "I was lucky it was still there after I saved up."
"It still doesn't add up, baby." He shook his head. "Even with your rent month doubled, this is worth close to eight or nine thousand dollars. That math doesn't work. What would you be left to buy it? You'd have nothing left for your expenses. What did you buy this for?"
Wait a second.
He's right.
What the fuck?
"The lady had it priced for $3K, but I got it down to two. My idiot self actually believed it was worth the $3K she had it for."
"Nope."
"I even took it to some guy who put it in a little better shape. He didn't tell me anything."
Raising a brow, running his tongue across the inside of his cheek, a smirk on his face. "Did you ask him?"
"I mean, no," I said, biting my bottom lip. "I didn't."
"Then why would he say anything?" he asked with a chuckle.
"Touché." Narrowing my eyes, I shoved him lightly. "Shut up, Harry."
His eyes scanned over the cello again, smiling as he took in the instrument he loved so much.
And then he flipped it over, seeing something painted on the base of the fingerboard. His fingers swept over it over again — and again.
"You did this?" he question in a hushed tone.
"Had to make it a little more personal." My lips curled upwards.
In a deep crimson, I'd painted a couple of — badly drawn — tulips and his name with ebony ink. And just below, I wrote him a note.
Happy 29th, Tiger
I love you, Essie
A soft gasp escaped his mouth, reading it multiple times.
Everything about it made him mentally scream in disbelief.
When his eyes met mine, they were glossy. "I can't believe you got this for me."
"I know you told me it's been ages since you played. I don't know what happened to your last o—"
"She broke it."
"Wh—"
No. It couldn't be.
No. She fucking did not.
My brows furrowed as my heart ached. I truly hope that it wasn't who I thought it was.
"Madison?"
"Yeah." Harry hesitantly nodded. That ashamed expression overtook his face — again.
Oh, I was going to cut a bitch.
"Came home early one day, wanted to surprise her because she loved my playing. Or at least, she did at the beginning of our relationship." He cleared his throat and looked down at the instrument. "When she came home, I thought she was so happy, but she wasn't from something her dad said. Apparently, it was about her wasting so much of his money."
"Probably true," I mumbled, and he let out the softest chuckle assuring my comment.
"Anyway, she didn't like how I was wasting my time playing an instrument when I could've taken on an extra shift to make sure we had more money to have a 'better future.' And well, you can just guess the rest."
His head hung low, holding that same guilty look that shouldn't be there, to begin with.
Before I said anything, he continued, "I know now that it wasn't my fault. I thought it was mine at first. I believed everything she said. I was so fucking gullible and stupid."
"You weren't gullible nor stupid, Harry. I could write a PhD thesis on how much I think she's a manipulative and toxic bitch. It's all her fault."
"Just wish I knew that then."
"Well, you found out eventually. Imagine if you didn't find out how bad she was and lived the rest of your life miserable."
"That's not great for my mental state, sweetheart, but thanks for that picture." He chuckled, and I shoved his shoulder.
"It's not what I meant. The point is, you got out of that, and you made yourself the best you can be."
"Not exactly. I was alone. I never wanted that, but I just lost trust with everyone. You helped me with that. Took a while for that to fix and all, but it I —"
"Became a tiger and conquered the world."
"Damn fucking right I did."
"Don't be afraid to fail if it leads you to success," I quoted.
"I said that in —"
"Your Forbes interview, yeah. I think I memorised the whole thing from how many times I read it." A small laugh left my chest as Harry smiled. "Will you play me something?"
"I will. Just, later if that's okay. Keep it safe for me until then. Wanna cuddle with my girl now," he spoke softly. "In bed this time, though?"
"Whatever the birthday boy wants. Whenever you're ready, pretty." I smiled.
Harry took hold of the cello, running his fingers over the fingerboard one last time, before placing it in the case I gave him. He tapped it twice, looking at me with another precious look before leaning the case against his closet.
Taking hold of my hand, he took us both to the bathroom to brush our teeth and entered my bedroom.
Settling in place, we fit tight on my small bed. Harry's back laid flat whilst my head rested on his chest.
All I could think in the moment as his fingers caressed through my hair was that there was no place I would rather be.
Harry was my home.

Harry.
Disbelief.
That's what I felt when it came to Serenity. I still couldn't believe that she was a part of my life, and not just that, but that she loved someone like me.
After Madison, I never thought I'd want to love again. Hell, I never thought someone would love me as just Harry.
Maybe it was another reason why I fucked up with her studio. Maybe I was also protecting my heart at the same time, and I just never knew that at the time — and well, for several months.
It turned out that I was just numb and delusional.
Essie lit up my body, heart, mind, and soul. Bringing it aflame and never letting the softest wind break through.
The gifts that she gave me were the most touching and heartfelt presents I've ever got. But I lied to her; the first one I got was also from her — the tulips. It was all from her.
She was so thoughtful with everything she said and did. Never would I have thought things like those would ever cross her mind.
I knew my birthday was coming up while we were apart, and I knew that we weren't going to spend it together. And even when I figured my shit out, I still wasn't sure if I was going to get her back.
From how bad I fucked up, I deserved being alone.
I really was looking forward to seeing how a birthday would go with someone I adored so much at the time. I didn't expect anything, except for happiness. I forgot that gifts were even part of them. In all honesty, I just wanted a hug, kissy, and cuddles. It was cheesy and cringy as fuck, but it was the truth.
After I got my Essie back, I completely forgot about my birthday in its entirety. There was only one time I remembered it, and I only came across the date when I was checking my calendar for a meeting and just thought to myself: next year.
And I smiled.
Because I knew that she would still be mine then. I wasn't going to let her go or even give her the thought of considering leaving me.
But if she wanted to, for some unknown reason, I'd let her go if that meant her happiness.
I wasn't selfish, even though I knew that she was my happiness.
Seeing what she gave me, though, I couldn't believe my eyes. I had to do a double-take over because it seemed so surreal.
That ballerina jewelry box, I'd use that every fucking day — travelling or not.
That cello, I'd play it one day with all my heart.
"I love you," I whispered, running my fingers through her hair.
"I love you more."
"No, I meant, Happy 29th. I love you, Essie," I repeated, "You wrote that on the cello."
"Yeah, I did," she said.
"We hadn't said it to each other. You know, at that time."
"I know. I was getting antsy. I told you when I fell in love with you, but I couldn't keep it to myself any longer. I was going to wait until you were sure of your feelings, but I just couldn't. And then when everything happened, it all just went downhill after that. I guess that's why it hurt even more." Her voice was quiet as she spoke, and I squeezed my hand that held hers.
"I don't know. I just — yeah, things were taking too long, maybe. Actually, definitely long. For me, it was just it was all over the place. My toxic ex and being mad at myself. I guess the infuriation I had for you in the very beginning somehow just turned to adoring you. As for adoring you, well, that was a secret word for I love you," I paused, "I just didn't know it yet."
"It's okay, you know," Essie said softly, lifting up to look at me.
"What is?"
"That it took you some time to figure your feelings out. When mine just came, I knew I'd have to wait for you. I actually didn't even know if I would ever tell you. We weren't even dating when I started loving you."
"The carnival."
"Yeah, that's when I knew," she whispered, and I felt a pang in my heart.
I wish I had known earlier, too.
"You know, even though I chose to wait for so long, I was going to snap so many times."
"What do you mean?"
A light chuckle escaped her lips. "I mean, I was going to tell you I loved you, and I almost didn't care about your feelings. I caught myself each time. It wasn't that I planned to be selfish. It was just my feelings and mouth having a mind of their own. Well, heart in this case."
"How many?"
"You really want to know?" Serenity asked hesitantly, and I nodded in response. Serenity side-eyed me, flickering all over my face to study me. "You're not just saying this because you want to know how much I struggled telling you, and you want to know to bring yourself to guilt?"
She fucking caught me.
"No."
"You're a shit liar, Harry."
"So, are you going to tell me?" I questioned once more, nervous that she'd say yes, and of finding out the actual answer to it.
When she nodded, that's when my heart started pounding. Did I really want to know?
"It's was a few times, H. It's just better that I don't say anything," she spoke softly with a smile. "What I can tell you is that it almost slipped each of those times."
"Saying it?"
"Oh, yes." A small laugh left her lips. "But I did say it more times than we can both count in my mind. It was hard to hold it back. It's not easy to keep your feelings to yourself."
"So that's been months for you."
"Tell me about it," she laughed lightly.
Biting my bottom lip, I felt debated on what to say next.
"I, um —"
Noticing my hesitation, Serenity asked, "What is it, Tiger?"
"My feelings — um, I told you as soon as I figured it out."
With a small smile, she answered, "Figured as much."
"How'd you know?"
"Because when you came to the cabin, you kept telling me that you adored me. It wasn't anything more than that. But when you rushed into my studio, it seemed that things might've been different — but I didn't know what it was. Don't get me wrong, I was taken so off guard that I didn't even expect to hear those words from you then."
"So I surprised you?"
"Best kind of surprise." She grinned.
"Good," I said in ultimate content.
Sitting up, I pulled her to straddle my lap, my hands rested on her hips as I leaned in slightly. "Kissy."
"What? Just because you love me now gives you all authority to kiss me?"
I smirked.
"Yes, darling. It does."
"Alright, so let's make a de—"
"No fucking deals or negotiations. That wasn't a question for you,. It was a demand."
"Oh?"
"Yes, oh."
And then she chuckled — menacingly.
"Someone seems to think he can always get what he wants."
"I can, and you know it."
She smirked. "I can easily deprive you of everything you want."
"I know that, sweetheart. I would never force you." I smiled, then mimicked her expression. "But I do have other ways to get what I want. Ways to make you fall under my spell — like you always do."
"Oh yeah? Show me those ways because I clearly forgot."
"Like this," I muttered, placing my lips on her temple, then another on her cheek. "And this."
Then her nose and down to her jaw. Behind her ear and below it. And trailing with the smallest pecks up to where we both desperately wanted to touch another.
Gently, I grazed my hands up and down her arms and thighs, all whilst whispering "And this" in my most profound tone.
And with every kiss, I felt her melt under my touch, soft gasps and whimpers leaving her.
"Under my spell yet, starlight?"
As soon as I asked her that, I heard that magic word I first told her.
"Kissy."
"There's my good girl."
And our lips folded perfectly together — nothing else could stop us.
Nothing except for the woman who had the key to our relationship — Serenity.
No matter what, if she said that word, I didn't care what state I'd be in, I would stop.
We settled back in bed, the comforter covering us entirely. Our legs were locked together, and fingers tangled within one another. I could feel her soft breath on mine, slowly getting heavier as our eyes were closed.
"Can I tell you something?"
"Anything, baby," she whispered.
"Wanna tell you when I fell in love with you," I spoke, drawing my thumb over her smooth skin. My eyes opened to meet hers, already looking back at me. "It took some time to pinpoint when it happened, but whenever I think back at it, I just know it was then."
"When?"
"My flower greenhouse. The way you kissed me after I saw it for the first time in ages. You said to me, the passion you have for this place is like no other. You told me it was an unforgettable sight."
A smile settled on my Essie's stunning lips. "It's true. Seeing you happy is always an unforgettable sight for me."
"No, but just that day. There was something different about it. I shared the most important thing I had to me — one that I kept a secret for years. You didn't even judge me about it. And I know you knew about it from when I told you in our call, but it still wasn't the same."
"What was different then?"
"Your expression and reaction was everything to me. Everything."I smiled. "Then you called me pretty."
"That's because you are." She let out a small laugh.
"I loved it."
"I know you do. Your lies fall through real easy."
"Except for one," I mumbled with a small sigh.
"Hey, now. What's done is done. It's over and in the past. Things have changed, you've made up for it, and we're good now. We're not just good, but great. That will be a moment which shall never be named nor brought up." A smile graced her face as her hand came up to gently cup my cheek. "Okay?"
"Yes, ma'am."
She smirked. "Yeah, I really love that one."
"Good to know for the future, sweetheart."
"Let's sleep?"
"Yeah."
"Turn around. My turn to spoon you," she mumbled, and I obliged. Her arm wrapped around my waist, and I felt her breath against my neck.
"Sweet dreams, my love."
"Ditto." Her single word was soft and muffled, but I couldn't help but fall asleep with a smile on my face.

Today was hectic.
I had back-to-back meetings, and I couldn't get out of a single one.
Essie came by, hoping we could have lunch together since she was off, but I couldn't even do that. There were five minutes between each conference call and in-persons that I had to get a bite out of something to eat or even kiss my girl.
I was starving, and all I had was half of the blueberry muffin, a quarter of a veggie wrap, and at least five cups of coffee.
The amount of caffeine in my system actually begged me to calm down and drink some tea.
It was the first time I felt that way.
So, it was almost as if Serenity knew because she actually made me a decaffeinated London Fog in my company.
Everything in me was driving me crazy, and I just wanted to relax for twenty minutes. Was that too much to ask for?
Iris couldn't keep Essie company since she had her own work to do. They did sit together for a little while, though, then she returned to my office and remained there ever since. Usually, when I met with a person or two, they'd just sit on my guest chairs inside, but I took everything in the conference room today. It was my home for the day.
I didn't want her to leave, even though she could.
Serenity saw how busy I was, and I told her if she had other things to do, she could go — but she didn't.
Just that small fact warmed my heart immensely.
At the same time, it wasn't helpful because I was constantly thinking about her during my meetings. She was so close, yet so far.
Her scent lingered everywhere I went, filling the air on my floor and my suit jacket — from when she kissed me passionately this morning. There were slight creases in the lapels from where she held on tightly before I left.
When I checked in on her once, I found her boots off and dancing in the free space. Slender legs fitted under her tights, torso hidden beneath a navy sweater of mine. She didn't know I was watching her as she was so entranced by the music.
Watching Serenity was hypnotic. There wasn't a time where I couldn't get lost with the way her body moved to the tune, mirroring the lyrics bringing out the meaning of the words through her actions. The soft curls of her rich brunette hair twirled into a delicate halo with each step. Long arms stretched out, fingertips reaching for every ounce of perfection. An angel with wings, lavish and flawless, whisking anyone behind them, and protecting the souls of their loved ones.
Grasping hold of victory, she spun her graceful feet towards me.
Well, not so gracefully since she tripped — but missed the floor as she landed gently in my arms.
Easy to say she was scared shitless because she didn't know I was even in the room.
"I would never drop you, petal," I whispered, her lips barely away from mine.
She simply smiled at me, leaned forward to kiss me.
"Hi," Essie spoke after pulling back.
"Hi, baby love," I said with a grin, and getting her back up vertically. "Or my clumsy sugarplum fairy today."
With a blush, she just responded to me with a gentle kiss.
After getting a call from one of my clients, they said they needed more time to finalise their details. The old Harry would've been frustrated, but the improved Harry was so fucking thankful.
The extra hour gave me some time to spend with Serenity and properly eat. I asked her to show me the whole routine she choreographed, and usually, she'd be a little shy and say that it wasn't ready yet, but she was excited about this one. I only saw less than a minute's worth of her spectacular performance, but the entire set was better than perfection. It wasn't for anything, but she just got some inspiration from looking down at the streets and listening to some music.
The way her mind worked never failed to astound me.
I thought it was just easy for me to find creativity and get imagination, but for Essie, it was effortless.
A magician of her own self.
We were similar but in entirely different ways. I had the business side down to a T; she had a gift for originality.
It was how she found the ballerina jewelry box such a perfect gift for me.
I saw the nerves in her eyes when I first held the present in my hand — she thought I wouldn't like it. Serenity was so fucking wrong there. I absolutely loved it. It really was perfect for me. I knew that she'd set up my things on the dresser how I liked them in the morning, and just thinking about how it wouldn't be the same when I travel was endearing and loving.
I adore her.
I love her.
It felt so good to finally say that without having doubts or hesitation running through my veins. I was finally so open and honest with my heart that it was liberating.
During the last bit of free time we had together, she gave me a neck massage while sitting on my lap.
However, that ended quickly since Iris briefly knocked on my door and saw something in pure assumption. Of course, it was all innocent, but the tension I felt after that massage was so incredibly relieving.
My poor PA ran out of the office faster than lighting, apologising profusely, bumping into my filing cabinet because her eyes were closed.
That was the first time that ever happened with me here, and even in my most professional state, I found it to be positively entertaining.
Serenity, of course, thought otherwise.
She immediately jumped off my lap and chased after her to prove it wasn't anything.
In all honesty, it was probably better. I didn't want to deal with a possibly scarred PA that I see several times, five days a week.
Thankfully, it worked out in the end as Essie came back with a happy grin, assuring me that she solved the misunderstanding. However, I did hear her and Iris giggle in the hallway just before she entered my office again.
But then I had another meeting — the last one.
Unfortunately, Iris had to stick around until after hours today to ensure things were done and files were sent to the right place and company. She only smiled, already expecting that request from me to her.
I could never find a better PA than her.
With a quick peck to Essie's lips, I forced myself to leave my office and head back into the conference room.
I swore that I had every detail of it memorised from how much I'd been in here. Not just had I forced myself to part from my love, but I had to actually pay attention to what was happening.
CEO. CEO. The CEO and President of Urban Corp.
It's who I was, and I couldn't slack on my position.
Even though I was so exhausted.
I pushed past my tiredness and still talked about possible new buildings to construct in Vancouver and other countries. One of the execs in the meeting seemed pleased with the suggestions and ideas. If things went through, which were yet to undergo many more conversations, it could end up being a win-win situation.
Some companies and firms had the chance to work successfully together, and others didn't. And earlier didn't particularly end well for one, because they were asking for too much — so Urban Corp. pulled out.
It was ludicrous that some people really couldn't take rejection well.
Business had etiquette, and that included professionalism. The outburst was loud enough to create many head turns, and to the point where I saw my girl poke her head to see through the glass. It was heartwarming to see her concerned when she mouthed, "Is everything okay?"
No one ever asked that to me before — not as a general question, but to me.
The second I came back to my office, I loosened my tie and nuzzled my face in Serenity's neck as I hugged her tightly. Her fingers raked through my hair in an attempt to calm my body.
I moved to kiss her lips and pulled back to see her give me a tired smile.
"Love, let's go home. I'm so fucking done with today."
But just as I spoke, the buzzer went off, causing me to groan. My hands rubbed over my face, and I pressed the button only to hear Iris' voice echo out.
"Mr. Styles, I'm sorry to bother you before you leave, but someone is asking to see you."
"Who? It's after hours now anyway. How did she get in?"
"It's a woman, but won't tell me who she is. She's persistent and won't leave. I tried to tell her that she needs an appointment."
"Sounds like someone I know," I snorted, looking at Serenity, who glared playfully at me.
"Why don't you see what she wants?" Essie suggested.
"Fine. Let her in the conference room down the hall," I said, letting out a deep sigh. My PA nodded and left the office.
"Fuck, I swear, that room will be the death of me tonight," I grumbled, and gently cupped her cheeks. "Baby, I'll be right back. I hope this won't take long with whoever she is."
"That's okay." She smiled. "I'll keep myself busy."
I shook my head, giving her a light peck on the lips, knowing that she was probably going to get comfy on my chair this time. I couldn't count the times she took over, and I had to sit where my guests did because she refused to get up.
My stubborn girl.
As I walked away from her, she smacked my ass with a cheeky grin. I narrowed my eyes at her. Oh, was she going to get it later on.
Making my way over to the conference room, I told Iris that she could go home once she finished up the last few things for the day. She bid me goodbye, and I entered the space where this mystery woman was.
My nerves were high because all I was hoping that it wasn't going to be my ex. That was the last thing I needed, and it would be incredibly stupid of Madison to even see me again after what I said to her.
But, thankfully, it wasn't her.
A woman sat on one of the chairs near the front of the room. I couldn't see her face, but her dark brown hair was up in a clip. Her clothes didn't appear fashionable or even among the middle-class level. I hated to judge, but if she just wanted to come here for money, I wasn't going to have that. Her nails were nervously tapping against the table — or more specifically, the Forbes magazine I was on the cover of.
When she heard me walk into the room, she slowly stood up and turned to face me. I could see her brown eyes watch my every movement as I neared her. It was evident that she was trying to say something, but nothing was coming out of her red-tinted lips. She wasn't from Canada or the US, as her facial features were prominent from somewhere in Europe or South America.
I stood in front of her, waiting for her to say something, but again, nothing.
"You asked to see me."
"Oh, um, yes," she replied nervously, an accent clear in her tone.
"First of all, may I ask who you are? My assistant said you wouldn't leave until you see me."
"M-my name is Valentina. Valentina Hernandez."
"It's nice to meet you," I said, but I was starting to lose my patience. All I wanted to do was go home, cuddle the girl I love, and sleep. However, no, I was waiting for a strange woman to tell me what she fucking wanted. "What is it that I can help you with?"
"I-I came here from Spain to tell you something," she anxiously answered.
"That's a long distance for you to just say something. You could've made a call or asked for an appointment to see me at an earlier hour. However, I am a busy man. You could've talked to someone else. I don't mean to be rude, but it is getting late, and I'd like to go home."
"You have a girlfriend, yes? A Serenity?" And as soon as those words came out of her mouth. I snapped.
"Excuse me?"
Never once had Serenity been publicly mentioned that we were in a relationship. I made sure the interview wasn't published at her studio re-opening, and there was nothing else. Gossip columnists were the only possible resources, but no one believed them when it came to the business world. I wasn't a celebrity, which kept my anxiety at bay, knowing that my work would be a buffer to separate the two. My employees all knew I was in a relationship, and with who, but they all knew better than to get my private life out in the open.
"I did some research on y-you."
"Until now, you have not mentioned what you're here for, and frankly, I don't have the patience for this right now. So tell me who you are and what do you want from me. Don't beat around the bush. I want an answer."
"I don't want anything from you."
"Alright, then why the fuck are you here?" I snapped, seeing the woman flinch at my tone.
I've never been this unprofessional in my life, cursing towards a complete stranger. My exhaustion was just the cherry on top of my actions. Nonetheless, I knew I was loud enough and that my girl would be making her way here — I just knew her.
"I just —"
"Is everything alright in here?" Essie's tone was soft as she spoke, easing the tension in the room.
"I wouldn't know. She won't fucking tell me."
"Harry, calm down," she said softly, walking towards us.
"Oh, are you S-Serenity? You're so beautiful."
"Um, thank you. But ma'am, who are you? It is late, and we'd like to go home."
Her mouth opened and closed with hesitation, and then she finally spoke.
"I'm — I'm Harry's mother."
And my heart dropped.
