Armen's point of view-
I walked up the doors of my school, a small school house near the middle of our town called Ruby shire. It was a small town, but good. You know, if you ignore the fact that everyone tries to ignore my family. Truthfully, we barely even live within the town boundaries. Our home is in a more desolate area and I'm sure that the town prefers it that way.
They hate my father and his experiments. He's tried to change so much but not even I know if it's for the better or not. He's obsessed with changing what is thought to be natural. He wants to change human capabilities and make the human race stronger. It's an ambition that has drove him half insane.
The village shunned him for his ideas and as a result they shun me as well. The kids who are around me at school only bully me for the fun of it... because of my dad, because I'm weak. I'm tired of being the outcast, but there is no one I can trust. No one that is willing to get to know me and accept me for who I am.
I sighed before entering through the two front doors, walking into the slim hallway. Kids with backpacks on their backs or slung over their shoulders wandered the halls, scattering about before the first bell finally rung throughout the school. I pushed my way through the crowd, keeping my head low as I made my way to my locker.
I approached the wall covered with dark blue lockers, a few others retrieving their things but fleeing when I approached. I had a top locker. The one below mine had a lock on it, but I never saw anyone ever really use it. I lifted my arm up to the lock and entered in the combination, quietly mumbling it to myself to ensure that I got it right.
"32 right, 15 left, 6 right."
I pulled on the lock and watched it pop open with a click. My hand reached in and grabbed my science workbook. It was thick with many pages, with it's cover baring a picture of a silverfish. They were common down in caves, which was just a coincidence that this town was once rich with mines.
I struggled with holding it up, my weak arms trembling from it's heavy weight. I held it firmly against my chest so that I did not drop it. I kept on my backpack, preferring to carry around what I needed instead of going back and forth from my locker to different classes. Although doing that did put some strain on my shoulders. I slammed the locker shut then turned to begin heading to my first hour class.
I reached my class just a few minutes before the bell finally rung. As we waited for the first bell to ring, I sat at my desk that was near the front of the class. Even the teachers did not trust me with being out of their sight. I don't know if it was because they thought I would cheat or because of some completely stupid reason. The desks next to me were empty but something tugged at me that people used to sit there a long time ago.
I wish that we could just move out of this stupid town and go somewhere where no one knows what my father does for a living or at least accepts what he does. My dad told me that years ago he presented a project to the townies but they despised it. He never elaborated what exactly he presented but it didn't bother me too much unless I thought about it for too long.
"Gah!!" I let out a strange sound as something hit me roughly on the back of the neck.
My hand rose up and felt something moist stuck on my skin and strands of my hair. I gaged in disgust as I pried the gross spitball off of my neck, and turned my head to look over my shoulder. Anger rose up in my body with my chest feeling heavy. My eyes scanned the room and ears perked up as I heard exasperating laughter coming from the back of the room. It did not take long for my eyes to rest of the three who sniggered, one holding a red striped straw that he used to blow the spitball my way.
"Quit it Ray!" I snap out through my gritting teeth. They only continued to snicker.
I let out a huff through my nostrils and turned my head back to face forward. I closed my eyes and began to breath to calm myself down. To pass the time, I pulled a book out of my backpack and flipped open in hard cover. It was the original novel version of Frankenstein, which I had gotten from the library. I was about a quarter through the first half of the book.
I looked up, instinctively bookmarking my page then closed the cover shut on top of the pages. I growled as Ray spoke to me, his voice getting closer. I gazed out of the corner of my eye and saw him approaching. Why does he have to keep bugging me?!
"What's that you're reading?"
I huffed again and growled. "Why do you care? Obviously you're too stupid to give a crap."
He growled and tilted his head with a snarl and his brows lowering in fury. "Run that by me again, squirt?"
"You heard me. You look up to ignorance and hate that I'm smarter than you, you imbecile! You can't stand that I'm smarter than you. Maybe if you actually started paying attention in class then perhaps you'd learn to brush your teeth because your breath smells like an overflowing garbage can!" Really his breath didn't smell that bad but I was feeling the adrenaline rushing through me and a need to finally stand up for myself after awhile of taking the abuse.
The whole class let out long sounds that showed that they were intrigued. All of the students had their attention locked onto us, each facing the front of the class with wide glimmering orbs. He snickered and snarled through his crooked yellowing teeth. I could see the fury blazing behind his green eyes that his dark brown hair, that was noticeably greasy, hung over.
A grin crept onto his cheeks. "At least I have friends..! At least I have a father that pays attention to me and doesn't constantly put the whole town in danger!"
The class let out another round of sounds of interest and cracking up. Some shouting out "burn" to show that I was losing this argument. Well it was not really an argument nor a verbal fight I cared about winning. It would not change my reputation for the better. Either way everyone would continue to hate me. Yet I found pleasure in down grading the poor excuse of a student that towered before me.
"My father is only trying to protect me! Obviously yours doesn't care about you enough, other wise you would have better hygiene and more respect for others."
I saw his fists ball up and his teeth grit together in rage. The class cheered in my favor. Ray opened his mouth to say a comeback, but his lips quickly closed together again. I flinched as I waited for him to swing his fist, knowing that this was not the first time similar circumstances have played out. He has hit me before for talking back to him.
My back straightened with my eyes growing as a loud female voice called out. "Take your seat, Ray!" I turned my head to gaze at the teacher as she entered the room.
Ray huffed out in frustration then turned around to head back to his desk. "Yes, miss."
He took his seat, with the teacher walking up to the blackboard. She took a piece of white chalk and began to write the lesson plan for the day. I put away my book into my backpack that I put next to my desk. I let out a deep breath and tried to slow the pace of my heart that pumped hastily with nerves. Thank God that things did not go too far...not yet today at least.
...
The entire day I knew that Ray and his buddies were eyeing me down, glaring daggers into the back of my head. The bell for lunch finally rung and the school corridors were beginning to clear out as everyone vanished outside to eat with their friends. Of course I was left alone inside of the building to eat by myself. I closed my locker and walked in the opposite direction of the other students. I held my lunchbox close to my chest. I didn't really care for the food served at school so this morning I whipped myself up my own lunch with the spare time I had.
As I walked down the hallway, my mind was wandering. I was thinking of the awful things that the kids have put me through theses past years and problems with my father. They don't know me. They don't understand. If they were actually willing to get to know me then they would finally get that I am not like my father. Why is everyone too scared or ignorant to even try?
The next thing I knew as my mind was snapped back into reality, I was falling to the hard tiled floor. My things fell from my arms and landed next to me as I twisted my body to fell on my left side. I cried out in pain as my body collided with floor, sore and aching feeling rushing through my body. I laid there, hissing as I waited for the pain and ringing in my ears to fade. As my hearing began to return to normal, I heard condescending laughter breaking out from above me.
My eyes opened as I attempted pushed myself up. I hissed in pain, nearly collapsing again as pain shot up in my arm and left shoulder. Once I pushed myself to my knees, I looked over my shoulders and watched as Ray and his two close friends walked away from me, laughing at their cruel act.
"Nerd!" Their voices called out, echoing throughout the hallway.
I sighed and looked down, sitting there for a few minutes as I tried holding back tears. All of the time... Every week. I'm so sick of this. Please have something change! Anything...anything better than this...
