Chapter Thirty-Two
"Dana, what's with you?" Joanna asked as Dana looked out the living room window for the hundredth time.
She spun around. "Did Colt call you? Tell you he'd be late?" Dana asked anxiously.
"No, but I'm sure he'll be here when he can," Joanna told her, looking over to Jesse.
Jesse shrugged. "I haven't heard from him either."
J.R put a hand on Dana's shoulder. "Maybe, we should just go ahead and eat. Colt probably just got caught up with a client."
"Yeah, I guess," Dana answered, pulling back the curtain again, peering one last time out the window before Summer grabbed her arm and steered her towards the dinner table.
They sat down in the dining room and began to eat. The phone rang a few minutes later and J.R went to the kitchen and picked it up. "Yes, this is he," he said solemnly. "Oh, my god! Is he okay?" J. R asked frantically. They all turned to look at him. "I understand. We'll....we'll be right there." J.R hung up the phone and then rubbed his hand over his face.
Joanna stood up. "What is it?"
J.R looked away with tears in his eyes. "It's Colt."
"What about Colt?" Dana demanded, throwing her chair back in alarm.
J.R took a deep breath before turning back around to face them. "He...uh...collapsed. He's in surgery now. His lungs," J.R got out.
"No," Dana said crying. "He was fine! He was with me at lunch and he was fine! He wasn't having any attacks."
"It comes and goes, Dane," Jesse said, rubbing her shoulder.
"I need to...I need to get the... papers," J.R said and left the room.
"What papers?" Dana asked Jesse, wiping tears from her eyes.
"Power of attorney." Jesse wiped his own eyes. "Dad has Power of Attorney for Colt's medical stuff. If something has to be decided, Dad has to do it."
"But he's going to be okay. Colt's going to be okay, right, J.R?" Dana demanded when he came back in the room, tucking papers into the breast pocket of his suit.
"I hope so, honey," he said and looked around the table. "Who's coming?" They all scraped their chairs back and got up.
******************************
Dana was in the back of Jesse's truck, praying for Jesse to drive faster. She drummed her hands on the back of Summer's seat anxiously. "Colt said he had something to talk to me about after the party. Do you think he knew something was wrong?"
"I don't know," Summer answered, taking Dana's hand and squeezing it.
"He kept telling me he loved me. Do you think he's going to die?" Dana's voice cracked as she asked the question, tears falling down her cheeks.
"He said what?!" Jesse demanded, spinning his head around.
"Grow up, Jesse. You know what it's like to be in love," Dana bit out.
Jesse faced the front. "I didn't mean it like that. I just didn't think he'd tell you."
"What?! Are you telling me you knew?" Dana demanded.
"Yeah," Jesse said quietly.
"When? When did he tell you?" She grabbed the back of Jesse's seat.
Jesse looked over his shoulder as he changed lanes. "It doesn't matter when he told me."
Dana growled. "When did he tell you, Jesse James?" She demanded.
"While you were in Italy," he answered, getting onto an exit ramp.
"When I was....that was months ago!"
"Yup, it was," Jesse agreed.
"Can't you drive any faster?" She demanded, smacking her hand against his seat.
