Chapter 12

It had taken a whole of five minutes since Katie had entered the prison, for the others to get worried.

"Maybe I should have gone in with her," Jess wondered aloud, nervously.

"She'll be fine. Katie's probably more fearless than any of us," Kyle assured her. The two of them, along with Matt had decided to stay in the car, mostly so that Kyle could keep an eye on it and the wardens that were going around. Apparently you had to pay to use the car park and no one had brought any spare change.

"Hey dude, I was wondering," Matt spoke up from behind Kyle's driver's seat. "Where the hell did you get this piece of crap?" He asked, looking at the horrible interior of the car.

"Would you shut up?" Kyle snorted. "It was a gift. And at least I can drive!"

"I can too, remember," Jess pointed out. "I just can't get the car when my mom is at work."

"Well until someone else can taxi us around, everyone stays quiet, ok?" Kyle's complaint seemed to work as they both quickly agreed. "How are you doing anyway? Being here, I mean," Kyle asked Matt.

Aside from giving them directions and complaining about his lack of room in the back (which hadn't been a problem for Katie), Matt had been quiet for the whole journey.

"I'm ok," He replied. "I mean, it's a little weird but it's not like I've been here before. Or at least not inside. I'm just nervous about Katie."

"You like her, don't you?" Kyle teased, knowing full well what kind of reaction he was going to get.

"I do not!" Matt predictably cried out. "I just don't like my friends being in jail!"

"It's not like she's been arrested," Jess giggled. "At least not yet anyway."

"This might surprise you but that is not helping!" Matt's voice grew louder as he responded, annoyed that he was giving Kyle and Jess the exact answers they were fishing for. He hoped that Katie was having a better time than he was. Or if that was even possible.

Katie Collins wouldn't ever admit it to anyone, but in this moment, she was absolutely terrified.

When she'd suggested she pay convicted murderer Cameron Maguire a visit, she hadn't believed for a second that he'd allow her access. She assumed that any women that he wanted to see would have had to contact him first so that he at least had an idea what to expect.

The group had actually gotten lucky when being allowed to see him too.

First of all, if you were under the age of sixteen then you needed to be accompanied by an adult. Thankfully, Katie's seventeenth birthday had just passed a month ago.

Also in their favour was Cameron's contact list. Apparently, on being entered into the prison system, he had to write a list of names and addresses of those he'd be willing to see (His immediate family would still be granted access in an emergency, even though they weren't on his list). If anyone else had applied to visit him, the prisoner would be notified and the guards and prison staff would vet the person applying. Once Katie had called them and named herself as Cameron's girlfriend, they did a background check on her and asked Cameron his opinion. Katie came back from their search in the clear and incredibly Cameron had agreed to see her.

She reminded herself to tell Matt's family to pretend they were an infatuated lover so that they'd be able to finally see him.

Until then though, here she was giving up her possessions to the guard on duty so that she couldn't somehow smuggle anything sinister into the heart of the prison. It reminded her of going through airport security on family vacations before her father became seriously unwell. She didn't remember it being this nerve-wracking though.

Perhaps it was because whenever she saw someone going into a prison on television, there was always some sort of background music playing, whereas here, it was completely silent bar the guards requesting to search her. Or maybe it was just that she knew it was just a movie or a TV show. This was real life, where she was only a few hundred feet from some of the most dangerous people in the state.

The drive had taken the gang around forty minutes and in all that time, Katie had been going over her lines in her head, trying to get as much information out of Cameron with as little conversation as possible. However, now that she was here and the sweat was trickling down her back, she struggled to even remember what her opening line was.

At least she could rule out stage performing as a future career.

Finally, she was led by the uniformed guard to a room she felt like she'd seen a thousand times.

Along one large wall were four windows, each with a chair in front of them and a telephone to the right. There were a couple of other officers sat at the opposite side of the room who Katie assumed were there to make sure things didn't get heated between inmates and visitors. She didn't want to think of how often that happened.

"Sit down there on the far right and he'll be with you in a minute," Smiled the guard, pointing to her booth. It had been the first time any of the guards had shown any sort of emotion and although it was probably designed to comfort her, it only made Katie more nervous.

"It's totally safe here, right?" She asked, stopping her guide before he headed back into the security area.

"Believe me, he's gonna need a gun to break through that glass. You'll be fine," He assured her with a completely un-assuring smile again.

Out of politeness, Katie smiled back before taking a deep breath and marching to her station.

On the bright side, once she was through with this, it would surely be someone else's turn to do something stupid for the cause.

Katie had been watching the clock above her head and although it said that only five minutes had passed, she was certain that it was five hours. But just as she was about to get really concerned about her lost time, a door opened on the opposite side of the window and Cameron Maguire walked in and sat down in front of her.

It took her breath away.

Although she'd never met Cameron before, or at least she hadn't remembered it, everyone in town knew who he was and what he looked like. The news had been plastering his face on screen for months now but it was only now when he was sitting before her, did she see that he did look similar to Matt.

The differences were his thick, stubbly beard and his hair which now reached his shoulders, and whereas Matt had dark brown eyes, she could have sworn that Cameron's were pure black. The bright orange jumpsuit was also a pretty telling sign.

"Well who have we got here?" He asked through the phone, speaking with an air of confidence, reminiscent of someone who'd gotten into a fight in their local bar with a drifter. Like they owned the place.

"Umm . . . my . . . my name is Katie," She gulped, thankful that the others were waiting in the car and not here to witness this.

"Are you nervous?" He asked in amusement.

"Umm n . . . no."

Cameron laughed. "You know, I've seen a hundred girls like you."

"Trust me, you haven't seen anyone like me," Katie surprised even herself with her response. Although she'd still sounded nervous, she'd definitely got Cameron off his game already. He must have hit her trigger word.

"Well I sure am glad to hear that. Although, I still don't know why you would want to see me. You know what I'm in here for, right?"

"Of course. Everybody does."

"So why would a sweet . . . young . . . innocent girl like you want with a bad, bad man like me?" Cameron grinned as if he'd lured Katie there himself.

For a moment, she wondered if he had.

"I just . . ." She hesitated. "I just wanted to see for myself. I don't believe the awful things that they're saying about you," She lied.

"Well I hate to disappoint you Katie, but they're all true," He shrugged. "I took that kid out to the woods and I smashed his head in," The horrifying words didn't even make Cameron flinch.

Katie silently gasped as the colour drained from her face.

"Scary huh?" He laughed.

"I'm sure it was an accident," She said, not knowing if anything she said would save this mission now. "I heard the Gorgoya –"

"The Gorgoya?" Cameron asked with a sudden seriousness. "You know that's just a ghost story that they tell stupid kids right?"

"I've seen it." She argued.

"Well you're even crazier than I thought, little lady." His wicked grin was back.

"I know it made you do it."

"I didn't make me do anything, I –"

"And it's making more people do things." Katie wasn't going to let up now.

"What are you talking about?" Cameron suddenly seemed uncomfortable, even if he was fighting it. He squirmed in his seat, waiting for her to respond.

"Your friends. It's made them kill again."

"And how would you know that? What do you think this is, some sort of mind controlling monster? You should be locked up too!" Cameron was becoming hysterical.

"What I don't understand is why they were desperate to get rid of the body over the waterfall when they were more than happy for you to take the fall the last time. And so were you."

"Shut up!" Cameron yelled, scaring any of Katie's regained confidence out of her. "I don't know what you're trying to do here but you're messing with things that you'll never understand. I'm in here because I did the worst thing imaginable, and if any of my friends did the same then they'd be here too."

"I guess we'll see soon enough," Katie shrugged.

"Not if you keep poking around with the wrong people you stupid slut," Cameron smiled.

"Is that a threat?" She cried. "You gonna get your friends to throw me over the waterfall too?" She couldn't believe that the guards behind her hadn't intervened yet.

Cameron began laughing again, but this time it was a different. The sound came from deep down and eventually came out as some sort of guttural cackle before the sound levelled out and he spoke slowly and precisely.

"If you keep trying to get involved with the people in the woods, then going over the waterfall is the least of your worries" He warned before slamming the receiver back onto its holder and getting up from his chair and turning his back on his visitor.

"What the hell does that mean?" Katie asked, trying to recover from the fright she'd gotten when he'd put the phone down.

Despite her yelling the question a few more times, Cameron didn't answer or come back. finally she headed back to the door she'd came in, knocking twice to let the guard on the other side know that she was ready to leave.

After he let her free, he searched her once more before giving her back her keys, cell phone and purse.

"You ready to go?" He asked, preparing to escort her back to the front door.

As much as Katie wanted to leave, there was still one more thing she had to do before returning to the others.

"Actually, could I go to the bathroom first?" She asked.

The guard obliged and led her to the visitors' bathroom, even holding the door open for her.

Once inside, she rushed to the nearest sink and splashed cold water onto her face. Although, it was supposed to wake her up a bit, it was also to make the tears that were streaming down her face less visible. It worked for a few seconds but finally she began to sob uncontrollably.

*

Katie opened the back door of the car and dropped in beside Matt without any warning.

"Jesus Christ, Katie!" Jess cried. "I thought we were being car jacked!"

"At a prison?" Katie huffed condescendingly.

"Did you get anything out of him?" Kyle asked, hopeful.

"Not a lot. He's full of shit." She replied, glad that she'd been able to get over her crying fit and get back to looking like her normal self. "We don't have anything to worry about."

"Are you sure?" Jess asked nervously.

"Yes! Now can we please get out of here? I've got no cigarettes left and I want to go home." Katie snapped.

"You don't have to tell me twice," Kyle smiled, happily turning the key in the ignition and speeding out of the car park.

"Was it scary?" Jess asked after a few minutes driving. "Seeing him, I mean?"

"No. Of course not. I'm not scared of anything," She lied.

"How did he seem?" Matt asked, almost whispering to her in the back of the car. It was clear to see that he was still concerned about Cameron, despite everything.

Katie sighed. She was about to answer but when she saw Matt's face, she fell silent and her mind went blank. All she saw when she looked at Matt was his older brother.

"Well?" Matt pressed.

"He seemed evil, Matt." She stated, not seeing any need to sugar-coat anything.

Matt nodded his understanding. He'd expected as much.

"Trust me; the only monster in this town is him." Katie seethed before falling silent for the rest of the drive home.

Phew! Everyone got their breath back? Good!

I have to admit that when writing the scene in the prison, I was transported to another world and couldn't stop myself writing. Do you guys ever get those scenes in your stories where you just get a huge dump of inspiration? Let me know which scenes have done that to you! I love hearing stories like this!

And speaking of stories, should Katie have told the others that she was scared? And should she tell them what Cameron said to her, or are they better off not knowing?

I'm also curious to hear what you guts think of Matt's brother. Is he just trying to scare Katie or is something out there?

Also, in case you care, the song playing at the prison scene is "If I Was Your Vampire" by Marilyn Manson. I get that a lot of people aren't too into his music, but this song has one of my all time favourite guitar riffs and is so perfect for the atmosphere of meeting a brutal murderer. Honestly, listen to it in the pitch black, in the dead of night and see if you're scared! Also if there was a movie trailer for Falls Peak then this would most likely be the background music!

In the next chapter, the kids are finally going on their camping trip. What could possibly go wrong in chapter 13? ;)
