Chapter 30
( Leaf's POV )
I opened my eyes. The room I was in had only a bed. The floor was grey and there was only white light. I had the feeling I was in prison. But what did I do to get here? What was my crime? I had done enough illegal things to get me into prison. I realized I was guilty. The only thing I still wondered was why there was no one here. No one except for me. Was I dead? Was this hell? The new definition of hell was a simple room with only a bed.
I stood up. My head hurt, so I sat down again. I wanted to scream, but there didn't come any sound out of my mouth. It was like I was locked up in a mute movie. I would swear I had seen this place before, been here before, but I had never felt this locked up and alone. But then, as if nothing happened, every sound came back. The door opened with a creaking sound. Our history teacher came inside, still wearing his ridiculous suit. But his smile had faded away.
"Are you okay Leaf?"he asked. I nodded. Was I okay? I guess I was fine. Lie. My head hurt and I had no idea where I was. The history teacher came closer to me. "Leaf, you're bleeding."he said. I put my hand on the back of my head and felt a liquid spreading itself over it. I looked at my hand, painted red with my own blood. The history teacher sat next to me and put a bandage around my head. I looked at his face. No emotion. Nothing.
"I can't tell you that." (Just to make sure you get it, the cursive letters are in Leaf's mind, like a flashback)
I pushed him away and made the first sound since I got here. "Don't touch me!" The guy looked at me, curiously. I stood against the wall, making sure he wasn't going to hurt me. "Who are you?!"I yelled.
"I want to know." My own voice echoed through my mind. I saw him. The guy, my history teacher, whoever he was. I remembered the grey floor reflecting the bright white light. I remembered how his voice sounded. "I demand..."
"I can't tell you that." The guy took a step towards me. I searched for something, anything, to hit him with. But the only thing I could find was a pillow.
"What's wrong Leaf?"the man said. I wished I could do something, but there was nothing I could do...
"I can't run away or tell anyone! What is it that I can't know?" I remembered every last word I said. Nothing was left out. It was like the whack on my head had given me back my memory.
"I can't tell you that."
"Do you know any other words?!"
"Keep it down."
My heart beated faster than ever before. This was the guy that kidnapped me, this was the person that made Gary get shot because I knew his face. This was the guy that had drugged me. And the worst part was that I fell for his role play as my history teacher. Nice, but incredibly boring. I had believed it, I had believed it all.
"Leaf I should fix your head."the guy said, getting me back into reality. But I refused to let him come closer to me.
"Stay away!"I shouted. He must've figured it out by now. I had my memory back, and I wasn't feeling like losing it again. I ran to the other side of the room. The guy slowly came after me.
"You can run, but you can't hide."the guy said. "Let me help you Leaf."
"No!"
( flashback )
"Do you want to get back to your friends?" The man looked at me, the lies were written in his eyes. I looked at the ground. Of course I wanted to, but what was the catch?
"Yes, I do."I said softly. This man wasn't that bad, even if he was a kidnapper. I looked at him, showing all kinds of emotions. My friends... I had heard the cry of a Charizard last night. And I bet the Charizard was Red's. I knew May and Dawn were searching, maybe Misty too. And I didn't know why I thought about it, but I wondered if Gary was looking for me.
"You can go back,"the guy said. Lies. I knew they were lies. There was always a catch. "If you answer some questions." And there it was, the catch. I nodded. I should go with it and get away. If I was lucky I could be out before 8pm. "Good." I clenched my fists at those words, but I listened to the following question, "What do you know about Misty Waterflower?"
What did I know about her? I knew her for just a few days, I didn't know her that long. "Little."I said, trying my best to show no emotion. "She's a water type trainer, gym leader of the Cerulean City Gym, and my roommate."
"Has she ever murdered someone?" Murder? Misty couldn't murder anyone. She should be in prison if she did. I shook my head.
"Not that I know." The guy nodded intrigued.
"Say a name, any name." I wondered why. What could they do with a random name? What could it mean? And what name should I say? I remembered May talking about her summer with Dawn and two others. I sighed.
"Barry."I said. I didn't know what they wanted with it, but I thought Barry was a nice name. I had heard the name only once, and Dawn never said it. I knew Kenny, of course, but Barry was a complete stranger to me. The man nodded and wrote it down. What was he going to do with that name? I sure hoped he wasn't gonna make a murder list.
"And the last question,"the guy said. Already? What was he gonna do with this information? "Do you swear not to say anything to officer Jenny?" The first thing I would do after I got free was go to officer Jenny.
"I swear I won't go to officer Jenny." The man was smart enough to recognize my bad lying skills and he didn't look very happy about it. What did he expect? He gave me some sort of injection. It hurted like hell and I soon didn't see anything anymore.
( end of flashback )
I now stood in the corner of the room, panting by the memory. The drug. That was the drug that made me forget everything. Apparently it hadn't been enough. Apparently I was stronger. But I had never thought I was responsible for Barry's dead. I hadn't killed him, but he was target because of me. But one question remained: Who was the killer? Dawn had said it was a girl, so it couldn't be this man.
"I'm helping you, Leaf."the man said. "I'm not going to hurt you. You'll be here for less than a week. After, you'll be free. The town you once knew will be gone, it will be a better place."
"A place where you and your girlfriend can rule this town?!"
"I find that rather insulting."
"Then what are you gonna do, kill Misty and leave?!"
"No, no that wasn't insulting. The part where you called her my girlfriend." I wanted to hurt him, but he was stronger and I couldn't do anything. "Do you even know what your friend Misty did?" Of course I knew that, she was my best friend!
"I do."I said indignant. The man did another step towards me, which made me push harder against the wall like it would suddenly break or something. The blueish eyes of the man were emotionless, cold. Everything in me told me to run, but I had no idea where. I didn't even know where I was. I ran to the door, trying to open it. I accidentally broke the doorknob, but now the door could open. And when it did I saw someone that made me walk back again.
"Brendan?"was all there could come out of my mouth. The fear stayed, but there also came a feeling of betrayal. Brendan looked different, scarier. His eyes made me think of a burning city. Until there was nothing left, but the ashes from what once was a beautiful town. Brendan didn't have to say anything. I sat back on the bed, letting the man take care of my head. But I couldn't get my eyes off of Brendan.
( May's POV )
I turned to the other side of the bed. It was almost impossible to sleep! I turned around one more time, but was too late with noticing I was falling off of my bed. "Ouch!"I cried. I stood up with a sharp pain in my back. Why was everyone still gone? Leaf wasn't back yet, Misty and Dawn were still away. Nobody had stopped by! Well, nobody but Brendan.
His words were still in my mind. Hearing his voice over and over again. I broke at the sound of his voice. The guy that stood there before me, was that the same guy that gave me my sketchbook? That had a pillow fight with me? That was my friend for as long as I can remember? His voice was just one of the effects my deeds had done to him. His eyes gave me a feeling of hell. Because that was what I had done to him. I had brought him to hell.
And where was I? I was in my room, unable to sleep, because I was afraid I would meet the person I created in my nightmares.
I walked backwards until I hit my bureau and slid down to sit on the ground, not bothering I had a chair. I buried my face in my knees for the tenth time today. The only thing I now heard was my own heartbeat and sobs. I tried to cheer myself up with the thought Brendan hadn't killed yet. But I couldn't even convince myself that this made anything better. I didn't know how long I sat there, but it was a long time.
I stood up, wiping the tears away, while making new ones. I opened the door. I only wanted some water. In the room was a phone, apparently they realized some needed it. I walked to the kitchen, getting myself some water. But before I even came to the cups, I already fell down. I was probably sicker than I thought I was. I became very dizzy, and it was like the whole world was revolving. I tried to hold onto the counter, but I couldn't hold it and I fell at the ground, closing my eyes to get some rest.
( time skip )
I slowly opened my eyes. It was dark, and as far as I remembered I hadn't turned off the lights. Or closed the curtains for that matter. I could spot one window, but there was something before it to block the light. I felt anxious. No sound to be heard, no light to be seen.
Once I got used to the darkness I could guess some things that were in the room. There was an old phone, a bureau with a chair, a couch, a tv, a table and a closet. I tried to stand up from the cold ground, but my legs were somehow very tired and I stayed. I didn't know where I was, but it seemed like an old place. Was this where they had brought Leaf when she was kidnapped?
The first thing I heard since I got here, was the ringing of the phone. I walked to it, finally being able to walk. Ring, ring, ring, ring! Phone call! Phone call! Ring, ring, ring, ring! Phone call! Phone call! I took the phone in my hand and answered.
"Hello."I said. My own voice surprised me. It sounded... hollow. As if I wasn't in here, only my body saying these words. I didn't get an answer, I only heard someone breathing. Good to know the person wasn't dead. "Who's there?"I asked with the same hollow voice.
"It's me, Drew." What? How did Drew know where I was? Oh, what did it matter! His voice made me confident enough to talk normally again. It was a shame the screen was broken, so I couldn't see his face. But I could picture the grasshead as if he was here beside me. The next thing I heard was a loud thud on the door. And another.
"Drew?"I asked, still in disbelief. But when I heard another sound I quickly added, "Drew I need your help. I've got no idea where I am."
"May, are you okay?"Drew asked worriedly. It was cute how I could tell what emotions he had without actually seeing him. Another loud thud. I became scared.
"Yes, I'm fine, but I don't know where I am, and there is someone hammering on the door."I said as quickly as I could. Trying to get as much information in one sentence. If Drew knew the number, he could also track me down. "Where did you call to?"
"Officer Jenny."Drew said. I became dizzy from having too much on my mind. I already was sick, this might even make it worse.
"This isn't the police office."I said, still trying to think faster than the thuds on the door. "Which year is the number from?"
"I'll look it up."Drew said quickly. It was sweet of him to help me. Then the door gave up and fell on the ground with a loud bang. It was already dark outside and I realized I didn't even know how long I had been unconscious. Maybe it was already in the middle of the night. Maybe even almost morning. In the doorway was a person I could only see the contour of. The person came closer to me as I heard Drew in the phone saying, "The phone book was from ten years ago. The location and number changed. Apparently the phone still works."
I wanted to say thanks, but the person grabbed me by the neck. I had to let go of the phone and leave Drew hanging. The person pushed me against the wall, still holding my neck. Just when breathing became difficult the person started talking.
"Where is she?"a girl's voice said. I could hear another person coming in. "Speak up!" I became red from the lack of oxygen and made a scraping sound. Then the girl finally let go of me. I heard some sounds out of the phone, but it was out of my reach and I couldn't hear what Drew said.
"Who are you talking about?"I asked breathing heavily.
"Don't play dumb with me!"the woman snapped. "Where is she?!"
"I've got no idea who you're talking about!"I screamed, loud enough for Drew to hear. The girl slapped me in response. The place her hand had touched my skin felt inflated. But I kept standing and just rubbed my cheek. "I'm telling the truth."
"You already know where she is."the other person said. "This is useless." I felt a small knife piercing itself into my skin, liquid slowly flowing over my shoulders to my hands. I was unable to see the red color as it fell on the floor. But the knife stayed in my skin.
"Where is she?"the girl said again. I had a feeling I knew who she was talking about. Drew didn't seem to be at school, so maybe Misty wasn't either.
"I don't know!"I shouted as loud as I could. I knew Drew had given up, considering there didn't come any sound out of the phone anymore, but maybe there was someone outside. Or Arceus decided I was worth saving after all. But no one came, and the only sounds were my pain screams. The knife finally got out of my skin.
"We asked you one simple question."the woman said. She made another cut in my skin, but a short one, and less painful. "We're giving you one last chance. Where is she?" I didn't say anything. What could I say? I could say a random place and hope they would take it, but I didn't know if that would get me into more trouble or not.
"Let's go."the man said. "She won't tell you anything." The woman turned around, dangerously fast. Right now I concentrated on my heartbeat and breathing. But I did look at the two. In the hope to find anything recognizable. But it was too dark. I could only see the features of them.
"If you tell me who you're talking about, I might even tell you where you can find that person." The woman turned back to me.
"Fine."she said annoyed. "Misty Waterflower." No surprise, but now I at least knew who I was dealing with. And why.
I heard the sound of a motorcycle. I silently thanked Arceus for having mercy on me. The motor stopped before the broken door. In front sat officer Jenny, and behind her was Drew. Officer Jenny stepped off of the motor. "In the name of justice, you two are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent. Everything you say can and will be used against you."
The girl swiftly jumped over some stuff, breaking the wood that blocked the moonlight. She ran away as fast as she could. Officer Jenny immediately pursued. Her motor was faster than the girl, but the girl was obviously smarter. I didn't know how, but she got away. And the man had disappeared too.
"May!"Drew yelled worriedly as he ran to me. I smiled to him as he hugged me.
"May Maple was it, right?"officer Jenny asked. I nodded, not understanding why she needed to know. "Can you tell me one more time what you know about the murder investigation?"
"Are you ready to listen?"I asked, trying not to sound too happy about it. Officer Jenny nodded. "In that case, with pleasure Officer." We both gave a short nod to each other, before going to the pokémon center. We first needed to sleep, then we could tell officer Jenny what we knew. And tomorrow I would have to see Brendan again. I would have to look him in the eyes, and I would have to accept this was still my friend. No matter how different he was. But now I just fell on the bed, glad I was still wearing my pajamas.

And the crappiest chapter, yet! Sorry! I'm having a writers block. And I'm kinda binge watching pokémon. But that's okay!
Firstly, sorry. I tried to update Wednesday, but I couldn't make it. Then I wanted to try Thursday, but I wasn't home all day, so yeah... But I updated now!! And now my winter break started! So I can (hopefully) update more often.
And secondly, I want to show you something! I've made a cover for My Opinion On Pokémon Ships. And I was just kinda proud of it. Even though there weren't enough people that liked the idea of publishing it, I still made a cover. (4 of the 5, like, why?!) I'm not publishing the story though... But here it is!

Too bad I'm not gonna publish it. It was easier to write... XD But unless there's one other person with the idea, I'm not publishing it.
