Chapter One
Nicole walks into the small school, or well to her it's a small school. Everything up there is small to her. It's her second day and she already has her schedule memorized. As she heads to her first class she sees a friend she met yesterday. "Andra." She calls out. Andra's head turns in her direction and smiles when she realizes it's Nicole.
"Hey, Nicole." She says once Nicole has caught up with her. "Ready for another day of hell?" She asks and Nicole laughs.
"Trust me, this ain't hell." She says and Andra smiles at her shaking her head. The two then walk into the room. "Jus' love science." She mumbles under her breath while taking her seat.
"Hey, I like jus' science," Andra says mimicking her accent. Nicole shakes her head at her failed attempt and watches as more people find their seats. Many smile at her and or wave in her direction. "What? Did you become friends with everyone here?" She asks and Nicole shrugs.
"Rather everyone like me and not 'ate me." She whispers and Andra nods her head. Before the two can talk any longer there teacher walks in talking about the reading that Nicole hadn't read.
"Nicole, can you tell us the summary of the chapter?" Her teacher asks. Nicole's eyes widen as she looks down at her book. Andra looks at her with a smile knowing she hadn't read it.
"Sorry, with all thuh movin' I 'adn't gotten ta much homework." She says and the teacher nods her head.
"Of course, just try to get the reading in tonight if you can." She says and then picks on another person. Andra looks over at her with a shake of her head. 'What?' She mouths.
'You are such a liar.' She mouths back and Nicole shrugs. The rest of the lesson Nicole tries to pay attention so she doesn't end up failing the class. When the bell rings she's quick to pack her things and ends up having to wait for Andra to catch up with her.
"So, what are you doing tonight?" Andra asks walking alongside her.
"Well, I have work until nine. Why?" She asks and Andra smiles.
"There's going to be a small party with some of my friends. You are welcome to stop by after work. It's right on redwood lane, 1248. Come and meet some more people." She says and Nicole thinks about it.
"I'll see if I can. I really do need to get some things done at home." She says thinking about having to make dinner when she gets out of school, then to work, and then back home to get some homework in.
"Just stop by and say hi, please." She begs and Nicole looks at her.
"Ok, fine, but just hi." She replies with a smile. Andra smiles and nods her head. As the two go to walk into their geography class they run into someone. Andra looks up and then tilts her head down.
"Sorry, Andrew." She says slowing bringing her head up.
"Hi, Andra. Just open your eyes when you walk. As for you, pay attention, that's twice now." He says his voice turning harsh as he directs the last half of his sentence at Nicole.
"So, is 'e yo-wr alpha or beta?" Nicole asks. Andra stops walking and looks at her surprised. "What? Ya didn't thihnk I'd notice?" She asks with a smile.
"I didn't know you knew about our kind and he's our beta." She says and Nicole laughs.
"I know a lot mo-wr than ya think, but that's for another day. Let's jus' git this over with." She says walking into the classroom. They take their seats in the back and two boys that she'd hung out with join her.
"Did you think she knew about us?" Andra asks and the two look at her confused. Nicole laughs as Andra minds links the two, just in case any nosy ears are listening. They both look up at her confused.
"What? But you aren't...you don't smell like...What?" The blonde one asks. His hair is on the long side, he's got the pretty light blue eyes, and a face that makes all the girl's drool. His body is toned just like the rest of the guys in his pack.
"Have you never met a human who knew about your kind?" She asks lying easily. She's covered up her scent so everyone thinks she's a human, but she wanted them to be open with her and her not always left out. She knows that sounds bad because she's lying, but they'd never understand her or hang out with her because they would think she's a rogue.
"Yeah, but only one and that's because she is our Luna." The other says. This one has short light brown hair, but the same light blue eyes, and same face structure as his brother. He's, got more muscle on him than Mason does.
"Yo-wr alpha 'as a human mate?" She asks having heard of it, but never really believing it.
"Yeah, she's scary though. You human females are just as scary as werewolf females." Mason says. Andra slaps his arm shaking her head at him. As Mathew is about to say something the teacher walks in. His boring voice already putting the class to sleep.
"How can anyone pay attention to the old man. He can't even stay awake in his lectures." Mathew says walking out of the room in front of Mason and the two girls.
"I don't know, the only reason I stayed awake was because of Nicole and your beautiful accent. You should always talk to Andra in that class." He says and sends her a wink. She rolls her eyes at him and lightly shoves him.
"Y'all ahr thuh ones that tawk funny." She says and the three of them give her a look.
"Ok, keep telling yourself that honey," Andra says patting her back. Nicole nods her head and they all walk her down to her next class. "See you at lunch," Andra says before walking off with the boys. Nicole walks into the room trying to remember if there was anyone she liked in here yesterday. She sees a familiar face in the back of the room.
"Rose." She says walking over to her. Rose looks up with a smile. She moves her backpack off of a seat and Nicole sits down.
"What took you so long to get here? I looked like I was saving a seat for my books." She says her bouncy red curls flying in every direction as she uses her hands and head when she talks.
"I come from thuh other win' awf thuh school." She says and Rose nods her head.
"Today we get a partner's. We have to write a four-page essay about the person we get assigned with." She says with a groan. Nicole grumbles under her breath.
"Wach me git stuck with thuh one person that seems ta dislike me." Nicole says and Rose looks at her confused. "Ya know, yo-wr beta." She whispers knowing there are more humans in this class. Rose looks over at her confused.
"He likes almost everyone. I don't understand why he wouldn't like you. Andra told me you knew along with like every person in the pack." She says also in a whisper.
"Good ta know." She replies before the teacher starts calling out names. Nicole sighs as Rose and another girl named Megan get paired together. Rose offers her a smile before moving next to her partner. Nicole looks up at the teacher as she hears her name.
"Nicole and Andrew." She looks towards Rose and mouths 'Told ya so.' Rose laughs and shakes her head. Nicole grabs her bag and sits down next to him.
"Ok, I git that ya don't like me, but let's jus' git this thang done with as soon as we can so we don't 'ave t' interact." She says and he looks up at her surprised. He nods his head grabbing his notebook.
"Full name?"
"Nicole Laura Arky. Yourn?" She questions after taking out her own notebook.
"Andrew Jackson Hackthorn." He says. She nods her head writing his name down. She turns the paper towards him.
"Did I spell it raahyt?" She asks. After looking it over he nods. He turns his paper towards her. She corrects her last name and then nods. They both sit there in silence trying to figure out questions to ask.
"Where are you from?"
"Texas. You?"
"Here, in Iowa." He says with a short nod. She writes it down wishing she could come up with something, anything to ask. As they sit there in awkward silence she realizes how hard this four paged essay is going to be.
"How old are ya?" She asks noting looking up towards him.
"18, what about you?"
"16." She says and he feels her gaze on him.
"But you're a junior." He says and she nods with a smile.
"I usta be homeschooled, so whe-yn I came thay put me 11th grade." She says feeling proud that she's so young.
"Birthday?"
"August 18. Ya?"
"Lucky, January 4." He says and she looks over at him confused.
"Lucky?" She questions.
"You have a summer birthday, I hate having mine in winter." He says grumbling.
"Yeah, and having your birthday in the hottest month is so much better. Wanna which?" She asks with a smile. He looks over at her and feels himself almost smile.
"If only it worked that way." He says before they return to an awkward silence. Nicole fiddles with pencil waiting for her to come up with something. She's relieved when the bell rings. She throws her notebook into her binder, shoves it into her backpack, and then just lets her pencil fall into her bag somewhere. She's ready to sprint out the door when she sees Andrew walk up to the teacher's desk.
She swings herself behind the door listening to what he says. "I can't work with her, just put me with someone else. Please, Uncle Jem." She looks in confused and then can see the small resemblance.
"So, she's new. Just learn to get along with her, I'm not changing your group, then I have to change another, and then everyone comes up and asks to change who they are with. It's not going to kill you to work with her and she already knows about us, so you really don't have to hide anything." Nicole feels anger start to boil inside her.
"You don't understand, I can not work with her. It's....just please." He says again.
"No, Andrew. Now get to your next class." He says. Andrew slams his fists down and walks out of the room. Nicole grabs his arm pulling him to the side away from the kids that are going into the room.
"I git it, ya don't like me. I'm tryin' with ya, ya thihnk I wanted t' be partnered with ya. Yeah, right, but that doesn't mean ya can jus' give up. Ya're a beta, ya ahr goin' ta 'ave ta learn ta deal with people ya don't like. So git over yourself." She ends feeling some of her anger released. Her wolf even seems to be upset with him, which she finds strange because her wolf seems to like Andrew. She likes to pick and chose who she likes, it can be annoying.
"Don't you dare tell me to get over myself. I'm not-"
"Don't ya dare try an take that tone with me. It's not gonna work an I won't coward down t' ya." She says shaking her head at him and walking away. "Try an tawk ta me with yowr beta voice." She mumbles under her breath as she walks down to her next class.
She's late into her math class, but she pulls the I was lost card and the teacher doesn't mark her tardy. "Hey, you seem a bit testy," Mason says leaning over towards her. She looks over at him confused. She smiles at him and shrugs. She needs to get over the Andrew thing, not worth her being in a bad mood.
"Nope, jus' don't wanna be here." She whispers so the teacher doesn't hear.
"I am truly offended." He says putting his hand over his heart. She rolls her eyes at him before listening to the teacher.
"Thank the moon goddess that class is done." He groans as they walk out of the class together. Nicole laughs and rolls her eyes at him. "I can't believe I have to wait for one more class before lunch, and you get to go eat now." He says with a pout.
"I eat lunch at ten, it's still mornin'." She says but doesn't really care how early it is.
"Yeah, but it's too long to wait." He complains. Nicole laughs again and then Mason's moved away from her and Andra takes his place.
"Go to class Mason." She says smiling up at him.
"Fine, steal my southern friend." He says sticking his tongue out. She rolls her eyes at his childishness.
"How's today gone for you?"
"Good, what about ya?" She asks back walking into the filled cafeteria.
"Well, I got this human that I have to work with in writing, and he seems really boring. Like how am I going to write four pages about him? The worst part about it is I have to put up with him for like five months." She says and Nicole looks at her confused.
"But summer starts in two months I thaught." She asks confused. She'd done research on going to a normal school. They always get a three-month break after about nine-months.
"This school isn't like most, we go all year round, but that's why we only have four classes a day and then lunch, or similar to that." Andra says with a smile. Nicole nods her head and then panic sets in.
"Is thuh elementary schools like that too?" She asks not knowing what to do if they aren't.
"All of the schools in this town are, why do you ask?" She asks grabbing a tray as they've made it up in the line.
"Jus' wonderin'." She says and puts a smile on her face. Andra keeps talking about her day and Nicole pretends to be really interested. When they sit down, Nicole waves at the people she remembers and the ones she has classes with. She feels someone of power walk up by her. The wolves at the table slightly bow their heads. Nicole turns and sees an older looking man. He's got dark hair with some of it gray, he doesn't look to be old, but the gaze he holds makes him seem like he could be a 100 years old.
"Hello, everyone. I'm looking for Miss.Arky." He asks and Nicole's stomach drops. What could they want from her? What had she done? Was it one of the kids or George? She looks up at the man and stands. He nods his head and motions for him to follow her.
