After the Convergence, most of humanity's greatest cities were wiped out. Flora covered every area of the world like a plague, coating it in thick fungi and trees. The creatures that came from the other worlds all spread out, hiding within ruins of old cities, deep and ancient forests, oceans and rivers, and highland fields. Those humans who survived hid in the remains of their largest cities, barricading themselves in and setting up monarchies and dictatorial governments to rule themselves. They still hunt and enslave supernaturals, hoping to find a way to eradicate the beings that now inhabit their world.

Meet Jamison Granger. Born just 7 years before the Convergence, he was one of the few humans who were unafraid of the new supernatural beings, awestruck by their unimaginable abilities, much to his parents' dismay. Two years later, after his parents died from a bridge collapse, Jami was rescued from drowning by a werebear supernatural named Mattheus, who took him in and raised him as his own in a small village shared by other supernaturals.

Things were peaceful and pleasant for Jamie and his new family for many years, until one day a party of humans came along and intervened. Jami was forced to stay behind but snuck along while Mattheus and several other leaders went to parlay with the humans. But it was a trap. Jami had to watch as the humans slew every last village leader, including the supernatural he had come to call "dad". In tears, he returned to the others to warn them, but it was too late to build enough cover. The rest of the village was slaughtered and a distraught Jamison was taken into custody for conspiring with the supernaturals. Little did he know, the supernatural prison he was taken to was actually a laboratory, where scientists engaged in the darkest sorts of genetic modification. Fated to be experimented on endlessly in the most twisted ways, Jami now quietly suffers and waits for the day he can break free.

Ellie was destined for darkness. Born in another world as the twin of shadow, she and her sister Lily were separated at birth and didn't meet until many years later while attending Aqua's Academy for the Unusually Gifted. Though at first, the twins were as disparate as night and day, they eventually came together and formed a strong bond over the years. The Convergence didn't come to their world for a while, but when it happened, the resulting tremors separated the sisters once more. It was also around this event that an entity Ellie dubbed The Shadow began manifesting itself within her, influencing her to give in to her darkest impulses and do ill.

It has been three years since she has seen her sister, Lily, mostly searching solo. To ease her mind between searching, Ellie often heads to Grant's Last Resort Bar, a safe common space where she can calm her nerves. But she didn't always realize was that this bar also houses members of The Rebellion. She never considered joining the ragtag group of resisters... until now. With the Hunters' patrols getting worse and worse above ground, the 18-year-old girl can no longer risk going it alone. This time when she comes to the bar, it's to meet with someone from this resistance while she considers joining—on a few conditionals.
