Chapter Two: So Close
Blusie's P.O.V
Once Pearl and I made it to the town, occasionally tripping over a loose root or rock, we found a Motel.
Pearl decided that we would leave in the morning.
The owner of the Motal smiled at us when we walked in the door.
Pearl had also helped me hid my wings beneath my shirt, obscuring them from view.
The woman behind the desks forehead creased, when she saw our reaped and dirty clothes.
Swallowing, I looked down at my bare feet, sore from trudging across the rough terrain.
I noticed, at closer observation, that the badge penned to her shirt read, Donna Smith.
She smiled and said, "You two look very tired, would you like to sleep here tonight?"
I nodded eagerly and followed her as she lead us back outside.
Pearl put her hand on my shoulder and pulled me back.
"Be careful, I-I don't know if we can trust her," she whispered, a calculating look replaced her worried one.
The woman, Ms. Smith, stoped at a wooden door, painted a shade of green darker than the grass I saw previously. She took a key out of her pocket and unlocked the door. After pushing it open, she turned toward us.
"I'll bring you both some clean clothes. My daughter has some old clothes you can have," she said, as Pearl walked into the room with me trailing behind her.
Pearl muttered a thank you as Ms. Smith closed the door and left.
Finally, I got a good look at the room.
It had creamy colored walls and two small beds. On one side of the room was a slightly ajar door, which lead to a bathroom.
A few minutes later, Ms. Smith returned with a older girl with her.
The other girls hair was a pretty brown color and was pulled back in a weird style I'd seen the female scientists at "The School."
The girl looked confused as she stepped into the room, carrying a small bag.
Ms. Smith also entered, carried a colorful book in her hand and a small yellow box.
The girl with pretty brown hair introduced herself as Raely Smith.
After shutting the door, Raely walked over to me and bent down to my height.
"Hello," she said, "What's your name?"
I looked at the ground again and mumbled, "Blusie."
When I looked back up, Raely smiled and asked, "Are you and the other girl sisters?"
I shook my head and looked at Pearl, who was sitting on a bed cross-legged and was watching a strange box.
Raely got to her feet and asked, "Do you need help to shower?"
I shook my head again and she walked with me to the bathroom.
After I'd asked what everything was, Raely left and I began washing years of dirt off my body.
I've never had a shower before...
I thought, as I reached for the shampoo.
About ten minutes later, I heard a knock on the door.
I nearly jumped out of my skin and quickly pulled my wings tightly against my back.
Then I heard a female voice say, "Are you almost done, Blusie?"
After identifying the voice as Raely's, I climbed out of the shower and wrapped a fluffy white towel around myself.
"I'm fine," I responded in a shaky voice, then began carefully drying my feathers.
When I finished drying my hair, I slipped into the clothes Raely left on the sink.
The pink pajama shirt was loose enough to hid my wings and had a butterfly design on the side.
It also had green and white plaid pajama shorts to match.
Slowly, I walked out of the bathroom and saw that Raely was still here, trying to get Pearl to talk to her.
Pearl has always been really shy around people, probably because the dumb scientist at the School.
When Raely saw I was out, she walked toward me and lead me to the bed.
On the bed was the colorful book, the yellow box, and a old looking stuffed bunny.
Raely lifted me onto the bed and told me what the stuff was, "This is a coloring book, crayons and my old stuffed animal I thought you'd like."
I smiled and wrapped my tiny arms around Raely.
Looking up at her, I say, "Thank you so much."
Raely smiles and shows me how to open the crayon box.
After a few minutes, Pearl goes to get a shower and Raely says goodnight, then leaves.
In the coloring book, I'm coloring a picture of what Raely called a angel.
Using the yellow crayon, I color her hair and then use my peach crayon to color her face.
Pearl then peeks out of the bathroom door and sighs.
"I thought she'd never leave," she says, walking out of the bathroom.
She was wrapped in a towel and carried a grey sweatshirt in her hand.
After searching through the drawers, she found a pair of scissors.
She cut two slits in the sweatshirt and walked back into the bathroom.
I went back to coloring the angels wings the same colors as mine.
"Whatcha doing?"
I nearly fell off the bed, then looked up to see Pearl sitting in front of me.
"How'd you do that?" I asked.
Pearl shrugged and used the towel to dry her bleach blonde hair.
Finally, I finished coloring the picture and walked to the desk to sit the coloring book and crayons there.
"Pearl, can we stay here? I really think we can trust them."
Pearl sighed and stood up.
I laid my head against the pillow and looked at Pearl.
"No, we're way to close to the school. We will leave in the morning," she said, as she pulled the covers up to my chin.
I grabbed the stuffed bunny from Raely and hugged it.
"Okay, but not to early," I mumbled, my eyelids already closing.
'Wake up, Blusie," a woman says, shaking me awake.
I groan and turn the other way, 'Five more minutes...'
The woman, my mother, shakes her head and exits the room.
A few minutes later, someone else shakes me.
I open my eyes and see the face of a little boy, 'Mom says breakfast is ready.'
I'm awoken from my dream by a loud bang.
Before I sit up, someone lifts me up out of the blankets.
"Get up, freak," I hear a voice snarl, as the person holding me, drops me.
I hit the floor, hard, before someone else grabs me from behind.
"Miss me," I hear another voice ask, Ari.
Something presses against my face and I try not to breath.
Unfortunately, the chemical smell reaches my nose and I start blacking out.
My eyes start closing and Ari stuffs me in a burlap bag.
We were so close...
