Chapter Three - Devil's Den
The trio hiked up the hill, towards an outcropping of rocks. It was while away from the town, which left them with time to talk.
"So; how'd your eyes turn out like that?" Faith asked, unconcerned about whether it was a sensitive subject or not. Hope went red in the face, embarrassed that her sister, usually sensible, would ask such a question. But Joseph didn't seem to mind.
"It was an accident I was in with a few other kids, when I was younger," he said. For once, his voice was calm. "And this wasn't even the worst of it. You should see what happens to some of the others. Aha! Here we are!" And just like that, the conversation was over. Faith looked unimpressed.
"A bunch of rocks? Really?" she asked. Joseph smiled. "Really! They say that there's a ghost up there, that helps the living get out of the maze-like structure." He said in his signature spooky voice. Hope clapped her hands together.
"Let's go get lost!" she squealed, while Faith ran after the two. Joseph and Hope ran like there was no tomorrow, climbing all over the rocky summit. Faith was beginning to think this was a bad idea. Then again, that was her mindset when this all started. So, instead of reprimanding the two, she watched like a young mother, as the pair scrambled over the rocks.
"Hey, what's your name anyway?" Joseph asked. It was then that Hope realized she hadn't given that information before.
"I'm Hope, and my salty twin over there is Faith!" Joseph lanced between the two.
"Twins, huh? She looks so much older, though. I would never have guessed." Hope smiled. "Yeah, it's the hair," she said, pulling on a lock of her tangly, long hair to prove her point. "Ever since Faith got it cut-"
She was interrupted as she discovered that they had become lost. At first, she was scared, but then a small smile spread on her face. She turned to Joseph and clasped his hands in hers. "Ghost!!" was all she could mutter.
Right on cue, a voice sounded from above them.
"What you're after is that-a-way." it called, and the pair looked up. Just as expected, he was in ragged clothes and had long hair. A slight smile hid behind the grimy face. Mesmerized, they looked in the direction he had pointed. Sure enough, there was a path that no doubt led out of the maze.
"Thank you-!" said Joseph and Hope in sync, not expecting to see the ghost still there. But strangely enough, he was still sitting. And yet his outfit had changed. Instead of torn, old styled clothing, he was wearing a patched up hoodie with the hood down, and ripped jeans. He also had glasses, which it was apparent he refused to wear because they were on his head. His hair, though still long, was in a ponytail, and looked well-groomed.
"Um... mister?" asked Hope, appalled. The ghost blinked in surprise, looking at Hope.
"The fuck? You can see me still?" he responded, his accent gone. He was a completely different person now. Faith then entered the scene, panting heavily after the chase. She looked up at the ghost with an annoyed expression.
"Mister, if you could please not talk to my sister, that would be great. And I don't think you're supposed to be up there. Hope winced slightly. "U-um, Faith, that person is..."
She didn't get to finish her sentence as he hopped down from the rocks, landing with his feet slightly hovering off the ground. He floated towards Faith slowly and silently, and she began to be a bit frightened, taking a few steps back. he suddenly lunged, his face contorting to be monstrous.
"Boo."
Faith screamed, falling to the ground, scrambling backward. The ghost(he was definitely a ghost with that stunt) laughed heartily. He did a somersault in the air, holding his stomach as he laughed at his own joke.
"Livings are so hilarious!" he giggled, planting his feet on the ground. His smile suddenly turned into a serious glare. "But back to the matter at hand."
No longer floating, he approached Hope and Joseph. Faith was cowering behind the two, still shocked and sort of scared. The ghost tilted his head to an almost unnatural angle. "How can you, just a few Livings, still see me? Hm?" he asked, expression creepily blank. Hope felt an involuntary shiver go up against her spine, and her blood went cold. It's fun to talk about ghosts and hear about the hauntings, but it's something else altogether to experience them yourself.
"W-well, I uh, don't know." she mumbled. The ghost narrowed his pale green eyes, before leaning back with a wide toothy grin.
"Oh, whatever! Guess it's just another phenomenon. Say, you don't know my name, do you? Henry Nersser, 26th Regiment, at your service." he gave a slight salute as he floated into the air, leaning back as if he was laying down on a couch. His eyes flicked among the group.
"Now... tell me, Livings. What do you want with the dead?"
