Chapter 16: Magic
"Magic?" Conan dropped his smirk. "No such thing."
Kaito smiled as his un-cuffed hand fiddled with the cuffed, trying to find some sort of loophole in the cuff's design. "Well, then what do I do at every heist?"
"You trick people into thinking something fantastical could really exist."
Kaito nervously smiled. "Well, I wouldn't call it that..." He scooted away from the small detective as far as the cuffs would allow. "A-anyways, have you ever wondered what I was after?"
Conan pondered on this for a moment. "Well, you're a thief. You're probably after amusement." He crossed his arms, pulling Kid closer to him with a clink of the handcuffs.
Grumbling, Kaito regained a comfortable position after being yanked by the stupid, stupid cuffs. "That's just what I lead everyone to think. Tell me, Mr. Great Detective, why are almost all of the heists I declare on the full moon?"
"That's easy. You're an eccentric egomaniac who wants to look cool with his cape flapping against a big bright moon."
Kaito's face fell. "Is that really how lowly you think of me? Really, and here I was, about to tell you the secret behind my heists. You shouldn't insult people who you want information from, tantei."
"I have all night. You- on the other hand, have abooout.... fifteen minutes." Conan pretended to check his watch, and added a shortened time to increase Kid's anxiousness.
"F-fiftee-?!" Kaito caught himself before he could slip his poker face, and sighed. "Geez, you really drive a hard bargain here. Alright, I guess it's story time."
Conan raised an eyebrow, but did not interrupt.
Kaito stretched, yawning, and settled into a sitting position, facing the small detective.
"Have you ever heard of the 'Pandora'? Hopefully, you haven't." He waited for Conan to quizzically shake his head, then continued. "Good. It's a gem that is said to grant eternal life."
"Why is the 'Great Kaito Kid' searching for immortality?" Conan sneered at the impossibility of that statement.
"Shut up and maybe I'll tell you." Kaito took a deep breath. "The original Kaito Kid died because of it. I want to find it and destroy it."
Conan scoffed. "It wouldn't even exist. What's you relationship with Kid, anyways?"
"Well, I'm Kid. I thought you were a detective."
The cuff's chain clinked again as Kaito was forced out of his sitting position and onto his face, rather roughly.
"Owwww! Jerk!"
"I ment your relationship with the original, nincompoop!" Conan had had it up to the overhead moon with the "gentleman" thief before him (gentleman?! More like petty child!).
Pushing himself off the ground with one hand and checking for injuries with the other, Kaito grunted. "Well, I admired him very much. That's all I can tell you." Kaito smiled fondly, re-living a memory of his dad.
Conan scowled. "That's... unsatisfactory. There has to be more. And! Why are there assassins on your back?!" The small detective poked Kid in the side, rather roughly. Kid, in turn, winced, and smacked the finger away with his un-cuffed hand.
"Nunya." Kaito hissed.
"What the hell does 'nunya' mean?!" Conan contemplated going ahead and calling the police.
"Nunya business." Kaito poked the small detective in the side as payback.
Conan deadpanned him as he brought out his phone and dialed Heiji's number. The call rang on for some time, but was picked up after a minute or two. Kaito reeled back in a sort of shock.
"Oi! Kudo! Where'ya been?!" Heiji yelled very loudly, making Conan flinch half because the Osakan was loud and half because he had used his actual name. Kaito also flinched, nearly falling on his abused glider again. He contemplated folding it up, but he kept it out for convenience's sake for when, not "if", he made his escape.
"I have company, loud nincompoop." Conan seethed into his phone.
"oops"
"Yeah, oops. Anyways, pick up my glasses. They have a tracker to my location."
Kaito gasped. "That's how you planned on getting the police here! Sneaky little shi-uh, detective."
Some unidentifiable noises were heard on the other line as Heiji assumedly grabbed the glasses.
"Alright, alright! I'll tell you my identity!" Kaito leaned close to the cone, who had told Heiji to stop.
"The truth is.... I'm Bruce Wayne." Kaito smiled wide.
Conan processed this information, and, after a while, made a sour face. "Do.. do you think you're funny?" He spat, pushing away the thief.
Kaito basically cackled. "Hilarious, actually."
"Call them, Hattori." Conan hung up on the Osakan, angrily slapping his phone closed.
A loud click was heard, alongside Kaito continuing his chuckling. He held up his hand, which was free, and made a waving movement. "Well, I'd love to see ol' Naka-screechy-mori, but I have certain things to attend to." A siren could be heard in the background, as Kid got up and went to the edge. "Ciao."
Conan was frozen in shock as he watched Kid dive off the building, his already open glider catching a freak draft and lifting him above the cone's head.
Nakamori kicked down the roof door and screamed into the air at Kid, almost falling off the building when taskforce members held him back.
Dazed, Conan looked at the cuffs, gasping when the cuff was still locked.
Kaito was currently laughing into the night about his blatant misuse of his fourth wall powers, a misuse he's gonna pay for.
