CHAPTER SEVEN
A/N- New Update.
Enjoy.🥂
I groaned as the rays of sunlight hit my eyes. I think someone left my drapes open yesterday, and I'm certain that person is Mason.
"Mason! Whenever you come over, ensure you close the drapes." I yelled without bothering to open my eyes. I knew Mason would be able to hear me from his bedroom.
"Ermmm... I'm confused as to why you are yelling at someone who is right beside you. You're hurting my ears." I heard Mason voice beside me.
I guess we fell asleep after watching the animation 'Ne Zha.' Ne Zha is a kick ass animation by the way, just saying though. But it's quite surprising that Mason is sleeping this morning, he has insomnia so he rarely sleeps.
"Ohh... You're here, even better. Don't leave the drapes open again. Thank you." I still mumbled sleepily as I opened my eyes to see Mason lying next to me.
Mason just grunted in reply.
The sleep slowly clearing away from my eyes, I rose up from my lying position and rested my back on the wall.
"What's the time?" I yawned.
"Probably eleven or something." Mason mumbled.
My eyes opened as wide as saucers, "What? We missed school!" I yelled.
Mason grunted and sat up like I did. He looked really drowsy and groggy.
"Since you obviously can't remember, today is teacher's summit." He weakly explained, but my brows scrunched in confusion.
"Since when does our school have teacher's summit? What do they even do at teacher's summit? How come I haven't heard of it before?" I voiced out my confusion.
Mason looked at me shocked, his sleepy eyes clearing a bit.
"You're joking right? If you are trying to be funny this morning, trust me it's not working. They always have teachers summit every session, and it's a two-day event. Are you telling me you don't what that is? After witnessing it for four years, this being the fifth year. Don't joke with me Hailey." He muttered the last part. Sleep evident in his voice again.
I chuckled nervously, "I was totally kidding. You should have seen your face. I got you good, I know I did." I said faking a laughter.
Mason heaved in relief, "For a moment you had me. I thought something was wrong with your brain or something. Okay, since that is established, I'll be going back to sleep." Mason said, lying back on the side of his bed.
"You took your sleep drops right?" I asked, although it was pretty obvious. Mason is only groggy and sleepy when he uses his sleep drops.
He nodded lightly without opening his eyes, "When it was seven a.m and I still couldn't sleep. I remembered that we didn't have school for two days, so I don't have to wait till weekend to get a sound sleep. So I went to get my drops from my room, since the extra I always keep on your vanity table is finished."
"And you couldn't sleep in your room after using your drops. What if you fell while climbing over? You take too much risks Mason and honestly..." I was saying but Mason stopped me by placing his finger weakly on my lips.
"Shhh... You worry too much Hails. I'm fine, aren't I?" He smiled, his smile a bit wobbly 'cause of how sleepy he was feeling.
I removed his finger gently so I can speak, but rather than dropping it on the bed, I held his left hand in mine, "You take too much risks Mason. You should have just slept in your room. If you didn't want to be lonely, you should have woken me up when you were going. You know I would've followed you. What if something happened..."
"Hails, take a chill pill. Okay? Nothing happened to me. Besides, you know how hard waking you is. You always sleep like you are dead to this world and you couldn't care less what's happening around you. Also, I didn't want to disturb you."
"But..." I tried again but I was interrupted by Mason again.
Key note- Drowsy Mason hates people finishing their statements.
"I'm fine Hailey. Besides, I sleep better on your bed and with you by my side." Mason admitted, not caring how he sounded.
I could barely hiding my smile. I thank God Mason eyes were closed and he was really too drowsy to open them.
I scoffed like his comment didn't make my insides warm, "You're being incredibly weird and corny right now."
"You're the one who asked why I didn't sleep on my bed. I'm just being sincere." He muttered.
I smiled and shook my head, sleepy Mason was definitely cute. I've seen this side of him so many times, but trust me when I say it never gets old.
It wasn't until I started feeling soft light snores from Mason, that I knew he was deep asleep.
"Mason... Mason." I called him to ensure that he was really deep in sleep. When he didn't reply or move a muscle, I was finally convinced the drops knocked him out cold.
Okay... time for a full-blown panic, I thought to myself and rushed quickly to my bathroom.
I totally faked it when I told Mason that I remember what a teacher's summit is. I don't even remember when we've ever had one before. I didn't want to seem weird to him and all that.
The major reason I'm fretting out is that what I feared is finally coming into play. You see, about three weeks ago I went to see Dr. Norman to learn more about my sickness when I discovered I was getting really drowsy sometimes, like really weird drowsiness. Dr Norman told me that some of the signs I'll be seeing to show that my disease is progressing and my health is retrogressing are: Migraines, dizziness, fatigue, difficulty in walking, nausea, blurred vision, excess sleepiness, personality or behavior changes, and the thing I feared most, memory loss.
I've been having some symptoms like migraine which I've been taking care of with some really strong painkillers Dr. Norman gave to me, then the fatigue I experience; what I try to do is just to do less stressful stuff. I withdrew from P.E in school. My friends were shocked that the school actually allowed me to be excluded but I just gave them a lame excuse which they believed. As for the Sunday morning exercise I usually have with Mason, I've cut it down to being his coach. Giving him strict timing and discipline which involves me sitting on my house porch dressed in sporting gear with a stopwatch and whistle. Mason also belongs to the school running team, I know what you're thinking, How can someone be that talented in so many things? Don't worry you're not the only one wondering, I also wonder everyday.
Mason never questioned why I changed overnight from a running buddy to his coach, and honestly I'm glad he never brought it up 'cause Mason would have known I was lying if I gave him any lame excuse. Plus not to brag or anything but I was killing it at this coach thing. Mason's endurance for long distance race has improved drastically, so allow me to toot my horn a bit.
After calming myself down in the bathroom that it was fine, even though I knew it wasn't. I tried telling myself that it was just teacher's summit I forgot, it's not like I forgot my name or something.
When I got back to the room, I picked up my laptop and discovered my brother tried to Skype me. So I called him back and he picked up almost immediately like he had been waiting for my call.
"How is my favorite sister in the world doing?" My brother, Carson said immediately his face came on the screen.
I rolled my eyes like 'are you serious right now?'
"Only sister Carson. I have to be your favorite 'cause you have no one to compare me to. Besides flattery won't get you anywhere." I said dryly.
Totally ignoring my talk about flattery my brother continued talking, "I miss you so much Hails." He said forming a pout. Can someone tell this guy that he's twenty-one and not five. Pouting? For goodness sake, give me a break.
"If you listened to me, you'll know I already stated that flattery won't get you anywhere. You and Mason are the same anyway, selective hearing is you guys problem. Take whatever you want to take, and throw the rest away."
"Psychiatrists have proven that's the best type of hearing 'cause no one can make you feel bad about yourself when you absolutely don't give a f*ck."
"Language Carson." I said mimicking mom.
Carson burst into uncontrollable laughter. I've been told I do the best mom voice by Dad and Carson. Mom isn't too happy when I mimick her, so I haven't gotten her vote of confidence yet.
"You really do it well," Carson said as he wiped the few tears that strayed from his eyes while laughing excessively before he continued, "Where is Mason anyway?" He asked.
I tilted my laptop to Mason's direction to show Mason's sleeping figure to Carson.
"He took his sleeping drops again right?" He asked.
He and Mason are close, so he knows that Mason has a bad case of insomnia.
I nodded in reply.
"You guys are always together. You're lucky everyone knows that you guys aren't dating and you guys don't believe in having sex with someone you aren't married to. But if I may ask, why are you guys not dating again?"
"Ermmm... Maybe 'cause we don't see each other that way and drum roll for the best part of them all, I'm a time bomb waiting to explode. I mean he can just wake up one day and discover his girlfriend isn't alive anymore. Wouldn't that just be a shocker to the poor guy?" I said sarcastically as I faked a gasp after I said my last sentence.
Carson looked so shocked and hurt. I then realized that what I said was really mean. I mean he was my brother, plus he's done his best to make sure I feel totally normal and not like I'm dying. He doesn't treat me differently.
"I'm sorry, that was a mean thing to say. I should have just ended at 'we don't see each other that way' The remaining part was really stupid of me to say." I said sadly.
Carson responded with a meek voice, all his previous excitement gone. "It's fine. I was totally not offended. Plus I totally understand."
"Thank you. I'm sorry for acting like a spoilt brat. It's not like I'm the first person to die of cancer, neither would I be the last. So it's time I stopped making it a big deal and stopped being mean to people. Or even angry at people 'cause they're not the one that made me have cancer." I muttered sadly. I've actually come to the terms that I'm dying but I'm human too. Sometimes there's a part of me who still wishes I can be a normal teenager with dreams and aspirations. Dreams of college, finding my Mr. Right, getting married, having kids to call me mom. I wish I could have those dreams but I can't. It hurts me that I'll never have those cute awww moments with my future kids but sometimes you've got to accept whatever life throws at you with no question 'cause honestly life didn't really give a chance to accept or to ask a question.
"Don't say that Hailey. You don't deserve this and neither does anyone. So it's fine if you get angry or frustrated sometimes 'cause you are human. It's okay to be weak sometimes sometimes you need someone to lean on. You don't have to be put together little-miss-perfect." He teased me as he smiled sadly.
A tear dropped down my left cheek but I hurriedly wiped it off. I refuse to be weak and let cancer get to me.
"Okay... Okay. Enough of the sappy stuff. What's your real reason you decided to call me when you're supposed to be enjoying your vacation with your girlfriend. Where's Serenity by the way? I haven't spoken to her in forever." Unlike Carson's previous girlfriends, I actually like Serenity and if they actually decide to get married, they definitely have my blessings.
"She went to surf at the beach." He shrugged.
"Which is where you should also be except you opt out to be a mother hen to a chick that totally doesn't need it and to being a couch potato. Tell her I said hi anyway. So spill Mr Carson, why did you call? Hope mom didn't put you to asking me about the surgery?" I asked hitting the nail right on the head.
"Well, Hails you can never know if you'll survive unless you actually do the surgery, plus..." I cut him off mid-sentence.
"My reply still hasn't changed. I'm not doing the surgery and I hope you can relay that to mom too since she's made you her official mouthpiece." I said angrily.
Carson continued not deterred by the time of my voice, "You have a chance Hails, you..." I interrupt him with a yell. I'm sure you'll think I'll wake Mason up, but I can't. His drops are always so strong, that he can sleep through a storm.
"I'm not doing it, okay? I have come to the terms of it and I think you'll should too! I'm going to die soon, so you all should get it into your damn skull." I yelled breathing heavily.
Honestly, this brain tumor is actually making me have behavior changes. I'm extremely harsh sometimes, but there's nothing I can do.
"I'm not forcing you to do something you don't want to do. I'm only saying you should think about it."
"There's nothing to think about Carson. I've made my decision."
"So there's no one that you just want to stay for? Someone that you wish you could spend even if it's just a little more time with?" Carson asked.
"There is no one Carson. I love you, mom and dad but I've spent most of my life with you guys so I have no regrets. And like they say, family is the most important knit of social life. Besides, Dr. Norman said even if I do the surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy and still survive with no form of reaction, by science he can only guarantee me three years, the rest is up to my body to decide how long it's willing to fight."
"You may never know, you may be a survivor."
"Yeah, it's that or join the millions of people who has died from it. My chances of survival is zero to none, so I don't see the point in doing the surgery. I'll really appreciate it if we can talk about something else." I said tiredly.
"Okay... Fine. I respect your wishes."
"Thank you."
Carson and I talked for another fifteen minutes before saying goodbye to each other and ending the call.
After I dropped my laptop on my night stand, my eyes strayed to where Mason was sleeping with no care in the world and Carson's question flashed in my mind.
"So there's no one that you just want to stay for? Someone that you wish you could spend even if it's just a little more time with?"
You know that moment when you've accepted your fate but someone whirls into your life, and is making you doubt all the reassurance you have given yourself about being okay with dying. Suddenly, you feel like you want to actually fight for your life just for the sake of the person. For the sake of that person, you wish to remain longer on earth.
Sometimes I feel like Mason and I have not spent enough time together and wish I had more time on earth.
Am I really sure that there's no one that makes me wish I had some time on earth? I know I told Carson that there was no one, but am I really certain of my statement?
A/N- If you're going through anything, My wish for you is that it'll be better one day.
